Derek Thompson (Dwayne Johnson) is a maniacal hockey player that got his nickname "Toothfairy" by hitting opposing players so hard he seperates them from their teeth. The crowd is wild for the colder persona of the sports hero, cheering him on to be unmerciful with his hockey hits. Thompson is dating Carly (Ashley Judd), a mother of two kids. Her daughter is Tess (Destiny Whitlock), who looks up to Thompson. The teenage son, Randy (Chase Ellison) isn't quite as enchanted with the antics of his mother's new beau. While the two...

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson stars as Derek Thompson, a slightly past-it ice hockey player whose propensity for knocking out the molars of his opponents on the rink has earned him the nickname of ‘The Tooth Fairy’. He is dating single mum Carly (Ashley Judd), mother to two sprogs, Randy and Tess (Chase Ellison and Destiny Whitlock). When Derek inadvertently crushes the dreams of a young fan and nearly tells Tess that the tooth fairy doesn’t exist he is summoned to the world of fairies and sentenced to two weeks as tooth fairy duty by the fairy’s leader Lily (Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews); his punishment is overseen by his care-worker Tracey (Stephen Merchant).

After The Rundown, I generally tried to give Dwayne Johnson the benefit of the doubt when it came to his future film endeavors. It was clear he had a knack for comedic timing and I was eager to let him prove himself. He still obviously has the potential to be a great comic actor, but his choice of projects since The Rundown don’t exactly instill confidence. Be Cool, Southland Tales, Doom, The Scorpion King, and The Gridiron Gang amounted to little more than disappointments that made me think I’d overestimated Dwayne’s talent from his first major outing. My enthusiasm to see him succeed even led me to offer a soft appraisal of The Game Plan a few years back, but there’s just no excusing Tooth Fairy. It reeks of poorly though out feature with a cast that can’t land parts in films of a higher caliber.

Dwayne .The Rock. Johnson is putting on some tights and stepping once again into the .family entertainment. ring. The results are pretty long in the tooth and those choppers are full of cavities. Derek Thompson (Dwayne Johnson) is a hockey player dubbed the .Tooth Fairy.. His defensive hits usually end with the recipient being missing a few teeth. After one of the games he goes over to his girlfriend Carly.s (Ashley Judd) house to baby-sit her daughter Tess (Destiny Whitlock) and son Randy (Chase Ellison). Before leaving Carly instructs Derek that since Tess has lost a tooth that money should be put under her pillow after she does to bed. After the kids are put away, Derek.s...

It's rather uncanny how two particular scenes within Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's latest family-friendly vehicle, The Tooth Fairy, mirror the descent of its leading man's once-promising acting career. During the first-referenced scene, Johnson's character, Derek Thompson, flushes himself down the toilet so that his hockey teammates don't discover that he's a fairy. Note my use of italics, which is fully intentional and references the movie's unintentional connotation of fairies somehow being, well, kind of gay. Within the second-referenced scene, Derek, wearing a pink leotard and tutu, stalks through Tooth Fairyland with biceps bulging and glutei maximi flexing before angrily picking a fight with his wingless fairy case worker, Tracy (Stephen Merchant), who has "a real funny name" for a guy and a bad case of "wing envy." Before long, the Fairy Godmother (Julie Andrews) breaks up the kertuffle, and then it hits me -- holy crap -- how, exactly, did...

By Susan Granger - In this featherweight, family-oriented comedy, Derek Thompson (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) is an arrogant, aggressive former NFL hockey player who's now in the minor leagues and known as "The Tooth Fairy" for his brutal penchant for knocking out opponents' bicuspids and molars. Continuing his destructive cynicism off-the-ice, he blithely informs Tess (Destiny Whitlock), the young daughter of his girl-friend, Carly (Ashley Judd), that there's no real tooth fairy; it's just a fantasy.
"Tooth Fairy" (20th Century-Fox)
That infuriates Lily the Fairy-in-Chief (Julie Andrews), who magically punishes him for "first degree murder of fantasy" by turning his nickname into a real job for two weeks, or until he learns to believe in dreams. Presto! Hard-bodied Derek is prancing about in a pale pink tutu, ballerina slippers and tights with huge wings sprouting out of his back and a wand in his band. Granted, it's an amusing image.

Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews.
Ok, maybe not, but one of the few local critics who can still tolerate me told me if I said Julie Andrews name three times it would write this review. As easier as that would make life, it’s my duty to prepare the adults out there who will surely be dragged to the new Dwayne Johnson vehicle with their youngsters. Perhaps this will be looked at as a survival guide for said parents, babysitters, or older brothers and/or sisters who’ll be yanked in here on chains. Yet, there is good news on the horizon. Tooth Fairy isn’t the assault of terrible like the trailers want you to believe. Now, that’s not to say the film is anything near decent, but every now and then it allows entertainment to rear its head through, if only for a moment or two at a time.

The Tooth Fairy movie has one major theme. Allow young ones to follow their dreams. Which is just fine, if they didn't make this idea into a 101 minute uneventful movie. A simple commercial with Dwayne Johnson would have sufficed. There's no way one can justify putting their children through this misery. Allow them to follow their dreams, but do not allow them to see this movie. They may never believe in going to the movie theater again.
We start off with a popular minor-league hockey player named Derek (Dwayne Johnson). His fans call him the Tooth Fairy, for he's knocks out opposing players teeth while playing the physical sport. When he's not on the ice, Derek spends time with his girlfriend Carly (Ashley Judd), and her two kids Randy (Chase Ellison) and Tess (Destiny Whitlock). Derek is a straight-shooter and doesn't believe in "misleading" kids...

The concept behind ScreenStar and its mother ship, PopStar, is to celebrate all things celebrity, but sometimes things come along from Hollywood that put us to the challenge. One such thing is Tooth Fairy (2010). Look, the world could use a good family film, no question. In times like these, a laugh is a nice thing and a film the whole family can see, well, that's priceless. But, really, everything about Tooth Fairy -- which will open nationwide on January 22 -- sounds misconceived. Let's start at the top. Dwayne Johnson as the tooth fairy? This was the man who was supposed to be our next great action star. He's a charming guy, on screen and off, but Dwayne Johnson as the Tooth Fairy? Next, Dwayne Johnson in wings? Just the posters makes us twinge, while the trailer, eesh, that makes us squirm. Now, Johnson's career survived intact after he sported a...
