"We are of use! Yeah it's not perfect, but it works." Roadside Attr. has unveiled the first official trailer for the drama Call Jane, which originally premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. This film is a dramatized, fictional version of the story of "The Janes", the underground abortion network that ran in the late 60s / early 70s in Chicago. The real story is told in the documentary called The Janes, which was already released by HBO. In this film, the story follows a married woman with an unwanted pregnancy lives in a time in America where she can't get a legal abortion and works with a group of suburban women to find help. After her own procedure she begins to work with them to help other women get safe abortions. "Inspired by true events, director Phyllis Nagy's film captures the essence of late-60s social change...

In the first trailer for the drama, Call Jane, Elizabeth Banks plays a woman whose dangerous pregnancy leads her to seek an illegal abortion as she ultimately joins forces with the underground Jane collective in 1968 Chicago.
The film, which premiered at Sundance, has become even more timely since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating the constitutional right to abortion and allowing states to regulate the procedure.
Directed by Phyllis Nagy and inspired by true events, Call Jane stars Banks as suburban housewife Joy, whose pregnancy leads to a life-threatening heart condition. Told that the only treatment is “to not be pregnant” but facing barriers to that procedure, Joy stumbles across an ad for Jane, the clandestine Chicago group that helped women obtain safe, affordable abortions in the late ’60s and early ’70s when the procedure was a crime in Illinois and other states.

‘Call Jane’ Trailer: Elizabeth Banks Joins an Underground Abortion Ring in Pre-Roe Era Drama (Video)
In the first trailer for “Call Jane,” it’s 1968 in Chicago, and Elizabeth Banks has just learned that she has only a 50 chance to live if she were to give birth. While her doctor recommends an emergency termination to the pregnancy to save her life, a medical board of men all votes “no” in performing the procedure and lets her know to her face.
“I’m here, I’m right here,” Banks says feebly in front of this body of men that barely notices her.
That’s the set up for this pre-“Roe v. Wade” era drama called “Call Jane,” which tells the true story of a group of women who lead an underground movement designed to help women get abortions they desperately need. The film shows how Banks goes from a woman in need to a woman on the front lines of the abortion fight.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Call Jane is a competently made, well-acted historical drama that doesn’t give its charged subject matter the stakes or urgency it needs. Loosely based on The Jane Collective, an underground organization that provided illegal abortions for women in need of its services, Phyllis Nagy’s feature-length directorial debut offers a timely, nuanced, mostly sunny look at the five years preceding the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade ruling. That it chooses to hitch its perspective to a conservative blonde suburban housewife is both a helpful storytelling device and kind of a bummer.
The movie begins with a long tracking shot behind the bob of its protagonist, Joy (Elizabeth Banks), walking through a Chicago ballroom’s hallway. After rebuffing her husband Will’s (Chris Messina) motion to celebrate and mingle with his new law firm partners, she heads to the building’s police-lined front steps as protesters shout and scream in the distance.

There are a whole lot of cigarettes in “Call Jane,” a detail — along with flip bob hairstyles and polyester pantsuits — that demonstrates director Phyllis Nagy’s commitment to the late-’60s period, even as it shows that the movie isn’t trying to tell women what to do with their bodies. Inspired by true events, this Sundance-blessed abortion drama takes place more than 50 years ago, but it could hardly be more timely today, as the Supreme Court considers several cases with the potential to roll back the freedoms granted by Roe v. Wade. Set in 1968, half a decade before that decision, the movie tells the story of the Chicago-based network of activists who called themselves the Jane Collective — a clandestine group of women committed to helping other women find a safe way to get illegal abortions. As the tagline goes, “You’ve come a long way, baby.”

A suburban housewife falls in with a group of activists in Call Jane, a Sundance Film Festival premiere directed by Phyllis Nagy, the writer of Carol. Elizabeth Banks is a likeable lead in this story inspired by the network of women who arranged safer illegal abortions in 1960s and ’70s Chicago. Written by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi, it strikes an upbeat, non-judgmental note while exploring the gender and body politics of the time.
Banks plays Joy, a smart, pregnant mother who helps her lawyer husband Will (Chris Messina) with his work, while assuming the duties of a traditional homemaker. After Joy collapses, the doctor discovers a medical condition that could be life-threatening if her pregnancy continues — but their petition for a “therapeutic termination” is denied by the all-male board. Desperate, Joy sees a flyer saying, “Pregnant? Anxious?… Call Jane.” She’s gradually drawn into the underground “Jane” collective lead...

Love is in the air once again, as Amazon Prime Video released the trailer Thursday for the second season of its romantic anthology series “Modern Love.” As you’d expect, the sneak peek features several meet-cutes, including an adorable, flirtatious exchange of glances between two strangers on a train, played by “Game of Thrones” alum Kit Harington and “The Politician” star Lucy Boynton.
In the trailer, which you can view via the video above, “Modern Love’s” Season 2 lineup of romantic pairings is teased, with Boynton and Harington being the first duo revealed. They walk away from the experience agreeing to meet on the train again in two weeks — but Harington’s friend says she’s “never going to show.” While we worry about the fate of that potential couple, the teaser moves on to introduce us to several more, whom you will meet properly when the season launches Aug.

Comedy Central has nabbed animated series Jodie, a spinoff of MTV’s iconic Daria, with Tracee Ellis Ross voicing the main character and executive producing. The series, from creator and head writer Grace Edwards and MTV Studios, will be paired with Comedy Central’s flagship series, South Park.
This is the first major move in a programming shift at Comedy Central focused on ramping up adult animated content and building an original animated slate around South Park. The major programming pivot already was in the planning stages when Comedy Central in late April laid off the majority of its senior programming team.
Jodie also marks the first MTV Studios series for Comedy Central as the brads are forging closer ties now that they are part of the same ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group overseen by Chris McCarthy. It was one of the projects on the inaugural slate of MTV Studios when...

Ross voices the title character and serves as an executive producer on the series, which is produced by MTV Studios.

Here’s Viacom’s description of the series:
What “Daria” did for showing how inane high school was for Gen X, “Jodie” will do for exploring the trials and tribulations of a first job for a new generation. The series will satirize workplace culture, Gen Z struggles, the artifice of social media and more.

At long last, MTV’s ’90s cult hit “Daria” is coming back to the small screen. The previously announced spinoff “Jodie,” with Emmy-winning actor and icon Tracee Ellis Ross voicing the title role of Daria’s Lawndale High classmate Jodie Landon, has landed at Comedy Central. The series comes from creator and head writer Grace Edwards, who’s served as writer/co-producer on HBO’s “Insecure,” with additional credits on multiple seasons on the Emmy-nominated comedy “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” and “Inside Amy Schumer.”
Ellis Ross will executive produce the series as well as voicing the main character, Jodie, the academic star of Lawndale High who often struggled to make her voice heard amid a very white suburban school — but always found in Daria Morgendorffer a wise confidante. “Jodie” will pick up with the title character graduating from college and entering a complicated world as an adult. Put down that pizza slice, Sick Sad World fans, because we have some news that just might put a smile on your face: Daria Morgendorffer is coming back to TV.
MTV's beloved cult classic Daria originally aired from 1997 to 2002, but it's lived on forever in the hearts of its fans. MTV is counting on that with its plans to develop a revival of the show, featuring our favorite sardonic teen and her sorely underused peer, Jodie Landon. MTV has launched a new production unit that's focused on reviving old favorites such as Aeon Flux, The Real World, Made, and of course, Daria.

Before you start protesting about too many revivals and reboots, hear us out. According to Vulture the new series will have Broad City and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt writer Grace Edwards at the helm, which, considering her credentials, gives us a lot of hope.

MTV just launched MTV Studios, which will focus on producing spinoffs of old MTV originals and putting them on streaming platforms.
MTV Studios is starting with reboots and spinoffs of series that ‘80s and ‘90s kids grew up with, like Daria, Aeon Flux, and The Real World. The studio is pitching all three of these shows to streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Apple, reported Deadline.
The Daria spinoff, Daria & Jodie, will remain in keeping with the original animated format, following main character Daria and her friend Jodie Landon. Grace Edwards, who has worked on series like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Inside Amy Schumer, is writing the series.
Aeon Flux, originally an animated series on MTV, will come back as a live action show set in a dystopian future. Jeff Davis (Teen Wolf) and Gale Ann Hurd (The Walking Dead) are executive producing the remake.

MTV has launched a new production unit, MTV Studios — and with it put in the works a batch of new shows and revivals of properties from the Viacom-owned cable channel’s extensive content library.
Among the initial MTV Studios slate is a new iteration of the animated series “Daria” from “Inside Amy Schumer” writer Grace Edwards; “Teen Wolf” creator Jeff Davis’s reimagining of sci-fi animated series “Aeon Flux” with fellow exec producer Gale Anne Hurd; a revival with Bunim/Murray Productions of reality series “The Real World”; and a new version of unscripted series “Made.”
Also in the works are two new reality shows — “The Valley,” a coming of age docuseries in the vein of “The Hills” and “Siesta Key,” which follows a group of young friends in Nogales, Arizona; and “MTV’s Straight Up Ghosted,” in which young people attempt to confront lost friends, romantic partners, and family members about being ghosted.
