Michael Cimino, who won Oscars for director and best picture for the powerful 1978 Vietnam War drama The Deer Hunter, died Saturday. He was 77. Thierry Fremaux, director of the Cannes Film Festival, announced the news on Twitter. Los Angeles County acting coroner's Lt. B. Kim confirmed his death to the Associated Press. His nephew T. Rafael Cimino told the The Hollywood Reporter that his uncle passed away quietly at his home in Beverly Hills of natural causes.
