GameSquare has instituted a major shakeup in the gaming world. The esports firm has acquired FaZe Clan and plans to reinstall the beleaguered entertainment company’s original leadership team.
A press release from GameSquare describes the acquisition as an “arm’s length all-stock transaction” that will allow FaZe to continue operating as an independent entity. The two companies generated a combined revenue of $138 million in 2022, according to GameSquare. Post-acquisition, the gaming-oriented holding company plans to save over $18 million by eliminating redundant costs.
“The gaming community represents one of the largest and most engaged segments of the attention economy,” said GameSquare CEO Justin Kenna in a statement. “The acquisition of one of the biggest names in gaming serves as a perfect illustration of how we have built a powerful infrastructure with expansive scale that we can use to leverage the full spectrum of resources within the GameSquare ecosystem.”

More layoffs have come to FaZe Clan. The organization known for blending esports and entertainment will cut about 40% of its workforce as it looks to overcome the financial difficulties that have plagued it since its July 2022 debut as a publicly-traded company.
FaZe CEO Lee Trink announced the layoffs in an email to employees that went out on May 19. The former recording industry exec cited adverse economic conditions as a cause of the cuts. As FaZe fights for survival during a challenging year, the company is prioritizing short-term operations over long-term plans. “This does not mean that we are abandoning the aspirations we have for FaZe — we are simply setting some of our larger goals aside so we can put our heads down and focus on what’s directly in front of us,” reads a portion of Trink’s email shared by Digiday.

Entertainment and esports organization FaZe Clan has gone public and won major trophies. Most consumers are already experiencing the metaverse. So it was only a matter of time before those two worlds collided.
FaZe Clan’s path to the metaverse will lead it to FaZe World. That space — described as “part virtual real estate, part amusement park” — will be built inside of The Sandbox, where virtual “land” is available in exchange for Eth. FaZe Clan announced that the land sale for its Web3 World will “be announced later this year.”
The Sandbox, a subsidiary of Animoca Brands, will work with FaZe Clan to produce events, develop games, and coordinate product releases inside of FaZe World. The brand’s most devoted fans will get the opportunity to become the “neighbors” of their favorite creators. FaZe Clan, the esports and creator organization that went public this summer, has selected the gaming platform The Sandbox to develop and host a virtual world that will be the gaming company’s home in the metaverse.
Known as “FaZe World,” the virtual world is expected to launch next year and will feature a variety of digital goods and experiences to connect FaZe Clan creators and fans together. As part of the partnership with The Sandbox, FaZe is also planning on selling the digital real estate surrounding FaZe World — a 12×12 plot of digital land in The Sandbox — to allow fans to become virtual neighbors to one of the largest and well-known esports brands.

As the so-called creator economy continues to be dominated by tech platforms like TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat, the creators themselves are increasingly looking for ways to get their own piece of the pie.
On Wednesday, one of the most notable shifts in that direction happened, as FaZe Clan, the gaming and content creator collective, went public in a 725 million Spac merger. FaZe is one of the first real Gen Z-facing companies (it counts Bronny James — yes, LeBron’s son — as a member), and now, flush with cash from the Spac deal, it plans to go on offense.
FaZe Clan CEO Lee Trink tells The Hollywood Reporter that the company is already looking to expand into a handful of new areas, including gambling, ghost kitchens (MrBeast’s Beast Burger is a template), fan clubs and subscriptions, and web3 and the metaverse.

The creator economy is going public.
FaZe Clan, the group of esports competitors and social media creators, will go public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (Spac) called B. Riley Principal 150 Merger Corp.
The merger will provide an influx of cash to FaZe, which is led by CEO Lee Trink. The group will receive an estimated $291 million from the merger, which it will use “to fund organic and inorganic growth as the company expands its digitally native global multi-platform presence across content, gaming, entertainment, consumer products and the metaverse,” it says.

FaZe Clan has made history, it says, as the first gaming org to appear on the cover of legacy publication Sports Illustrated.
That said, it’s not the first time that a prominent sports magazine has featured an esports figure on its cover; ESPN nabbed Ninja as its cover star back in 2018.
The Si cover features six of FaZe's members with their faces illuminated by a video game screen: FaZe Nickmercs, FaZe Swagg, FaZe Rug, FaZe Temperrr, FaZe Bronny, and FaZe K1. A profile inside features interviews with co-founder FaZe Banks, CEO Lee Trink, investor Jimmy Iovine, NBA star Ben Simmons (aka FaZe Simmo), and Atlanta FaZe co-owner Paul Hamilton.

The artists, entrepreneurs and pioneers on TheWrap’s 2020 Innovators List brought about meaningful change in a time when the coronavirus pandemic altered the world drastically. They adjusted to the worst case scenario and responded to the moment when America erupted in protest over racial injustices.
This year, actor-writer-director-producer Tyler Perry gave back to those in need while helping the industry get back to work, Rashad Robinson elevated his years-long fight for civil rights by putting pressure on Facebook and the major fall film festivals came together to collaborate on a shared platform of virtual cinema.
The individuals on this year’s list come from a variety of backgrounds and each have their own goals, but they all share an ambition to do something great and then surpass already lofty expectations. Congratulations to all of them.
Eight of the 2020 Innovators will participate in a panel discussion on Thursday at 5:30 p.
