IFC Films has picked up the North American rights to The Lost King ahead of its debut at the Toronto Film Festival.
The film reunites the team behind 2013’s Philomena — Stephen Frears, Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope — for a comedy-drama based on a true story about Philippa Langley, played by Sally Hawkins, and the historian who helped uncover the remains of King Richard III, lost for more than 500 years, beneath a carpark in the English city of Leicester.
The discovery, in 2012, was the culmination of years of obsessive research by Langley, who faced the incomprehension of friends and family and the derision of experts and academics, and whose role was largely overlooked. Coogan will play Langley’s husband and Frears will direct from a script co-written by Coogan and Pope.

IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to Stephen Frears’ drama The Lost King, starring Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) and Steve Coogan (The Trip), ahead of its world premiere at the 47th Toronto Film Festival.
The film reuniting Frears with writers Coogan and Jeff Pope—who adapted the script for his 2013 dramedy Philomena—tells the remarkable true story of amateur historian Philippa Langley (Hawkins), who was behind the real life discovery of King Richard III in 2012 after the remains had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching and searching for the remains, in spite of skepticism from friends, family and academics. Her story is one of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country’s most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England’s history. IFC Films nabbed North American rights to “The Lost King,” which will have its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival.
Directed by Stephen Frears, the feel-good true story stars Sally Hawkins as Philippa Langley, an amateur historian who uncovered the remains of King Richard the III after they had been lost for 500 years. Langley spent years researching — and searching — for the remnants, even when family, friends and academics openly doubted her.
Steve Coogan (who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pope) is playing Philippa’s husband, John Langley. “The Lost King” reunites Frears with Coogan and Pope, who previously teamed on the Oscar-nominated “Philomena.”
“I’m delighted that ‘The Lost King’ has found a home in North America with IFC Films,” Frears said. “It was hugely enjoyable to work again with Steve and Jeff and we were blessed with an incredible performance from Sally. Toronto is always...

The 65th BFI London Film Festival, which concluded Oct. 17, attracted crowds for in-person events and virtually. The festival unspooled over 12 days across London venues, 10 partner cinema venues around the U.K. and online. There were more than 139,000 physical attendances at screenings and events and over 152,000 virtual attendances.
The festival closed with the European premiere of “The Tragedy of Macbeth” at new festival venue, the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall with director Joel Coen and key cast, including Frances McDormand, in attendance.
There was a sting in the tail, however, as two people who attended the closing film and after party tested positive for Covid-19, compelling the BFI to send letters to attendees informing them about this. The positive tests came as no surprise as the U.K. is experiencing a dramatic surge in cases currently.

Keira Knightley is set to star in Miss World pageant comedy drama “Misbehaviour” for Pathé. Pathé will present the film, which is directed by BAFTA-winner Philippa Lowthorpe, to buyers at the upcoming American Film Market.
“Misbehaviour” is based on the true events of the 1970 Miss World pageant in London, when a global audience witnessed the patriarchy driven from the stage and the Western ideal of beauty turned on its head. The most-watched television show in the world at the time, with more than 100 million viewers, the 1970 Miss World pageant saw the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieve overnight fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast, hosted by Bob Hope, claiming that such beauty competitions demeaned women. When the show resumed, the result caused further uproar when Miss Grenada became the first black woman to be crowned Miss World, beating the favorite. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jessie Buckley co-star in the film.

Three of last year’s biggest global hits — “Wonder Woman,” “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Beauty and the Beast” — demonstrated the biz potential of tentpole movies with strong female leads. CineEurope, the upcoming gathering of the European movie theater sector, will debate ways to keep engaging the female audience at the box office this summer and beyond.
Women want female characters in films who are more than just “eye candy,” says Laura Houlgatte, CEO of Unic, a body that represents exhibition companies in Europe. The success of films like “Wonder Woman” sent a signal to the biz that films with strong female protagonists “can increase your returns,” she says, and that such movies are not just for women, but men, too.
Eric Meyniel concurs. “When you hook the female audience, you also hook the male audience, too, because they come with their [male] friends, husbands or boyfriends,” says Meyniel, international content director at exhibitor Kinepolis,...

The BBC is likely to announce its new head of film within the next two weeks, according to sources close to the process.

That timetable should come as a relief to those under consideration for the role and to wider industry who will want to begin building or growing their relationship with the new boss.
The job, which is considered one of the UK’s most prestigious posts, became vacant in autumn 2016 following the departure of long-time chief Christine Langan. BBC Films veteran Joe Oppenheimer has been serving as acting head of film since then.

“A comedy-drama about the colourful business and personal life of renowned club proprietor and porn publisher Paul Raymond.”
Starring alongside him in the lead will be an impressive cast, headed up by Anna Friel, Imogen Poots, Stephen Fry, Chris Addison, Tamsin Egerton, and Matt Lucas and David Walliams.
Winterbottom is directing from a script by two-time BAFTA-nominated Matt Greenhalgh (Control, Nowhere Boy), with the director partnering once more with frequent collaborator, Melissa Parmenter (9 Songs, The Trip...

When I got to see Attack the Block at SXSW, people went crazy for it! This isn’t surprising now when you start to look at all the hype for the movie but at the time, the fact people went nuts over it was a big deal. SXSW was the place where people in America were going to see the movie for the first time and I’m sure that there were many people in the audience who were there to gauge reaction.
I captured the moment on video (you can watch it here) when director, Joe Cornish stood on stage alongside Edgar Wright who servers as Executive Producer on Attack the Block as he asked the audience what they thought of it and whether they thought a Us audience would understand the rather English jokes, humour and accents. The entire audience at the Alamo Drafthouse went crazy for it...

Word of mouth at this year's SXSW was that Joe Cornish’s alien invasion movie "Attack the Block" was awesome and at the time it didn't have a distributor. There was some news that the reason for the film not having a distributor was cause of the thick South London accents and that the American audiences won't understand them. But now Screen Gems said the hell with it and is now doing the Us distribution. Pretty good news and happy that a studio has balls to pick it up and just go with it.Here is the full press release: Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (Spwa) announced today that it has acquired U.S. rights to Attack The Block written and directed by Joe Cornish. Screen Gems will distribute the highly regarded film which won the Midnight Feature Audience Award at this year’s South By Southwest Film Festival. The announcement...

News on the march…!
The headline says it all! However, no release date is specified in the press release. Also, no word on whether it will be subtitled… If that doesn’t mean anything to you, click Here to catch up
UK readers will get first dibs; it opens there May 11th; I’m sure stateside release dates will follow soon thereafter. Seems like it could be good for summer. It’s going to be interesting to see how this is handled by Sony, in terms of marketing, and how wide they will release it, at least initially, and what non-festival audience reactions will be.
Needless to say, I’ll be seeing it.
Read on below for all the details… I also embedded the trailer for those who haven’t seen it.
