Abel Ferrara‘s latest work Welcome to New York is a film so unflinching in its portrait of excess and moral-corruption that it makes The Wolf of Wall Street look like it was produced by Cbeebies.
Devereaux (Gerard Depardieu), one of the world’s most powerful businessmen is filled with a gratuitous sexual hunger – a man so entangled in his lifestyle of power, sex and money that he believes everything is his. This is until Deveraux sexually assaults a hotel maid in New York and finds himself arrested, on the verge of being stripped of this power. Ferrara uses the high-profile case of Dominique Strauss-Kahn as his factual basis for this slow-burning piece filled with excess and debauchery.

I’ve always have a tough relationship with the films of Abel Ferarra.
He’s always been one of the most unique and idiosyncratic New York indie directors over his 35 year career, but in the past decade and a half his work has completely degraded to the point where his films have become unwatchable. The director recently admitted he’s had some struggles with drug addiction, which makes sense: only someone who’s completely high would think it’s a good idea to cast Matthew Modine as your lead.
In Ferrara’s case, getting sober ahs yielded quite the dividend: 4:44 Last Day on Earth is not only one of Ferrara’s best films in years, but it’s one of the best films I’ve seen this year- like, Avengers good.

Chicago – Apocalyptic dramas are a dime a dozen these days, and it’s not difficult to determine why. While the Mayan calendar has singled out the specific day of our demise, record-breaking temperatures have caused some to worry that the planet has indeed reached its final act. Neither of these theories may be true, but that hasn’t stopped them from permeating our collective consciousness.
While many indie flicks have centered on characters living out the final days of life on Earth, no picture has matched the operatic intensity of Lars von Trier’s under-appreciated masterpiece, “Melancholia.” Yet Abel Ferrara’s “4:44 Last Day on Earth” has a power all its own, and like Von Trier’s film, it’s an immensely personal work. Ferrara cast his long-time girlfriend, Shanyn Leigh, opposite Willem Dafoe, and their dramatic age difference mirrors that of the director and his leading lady.

Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh cope with impending doom in 4:44 Last Day on Earth.
The 2011 film 4:44: Last Day On Earth is a science fiction-tinged drama-fantasy by the inimitably independent and ferocious Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant, King of New York).
The movie hinges on the idea that tomorrow at 4:44 a.m., the world is going to come to an end, brought about by the destruction of the ozone layer. As panic hits the Earth’s population, two lovers – actor and recovering drug addict Cisco (Willem Dafoe, Antichrist) and painter Skye (Shanyn Leigh, Public Enemies) – seclude themselves in their Manhattan apartment to spend their last hours of existence together. Accepting their doomed fate, Cisco and Skye take care of some personal business—they call their families to say goodbye, they make love, they order Chinese takeout—and...

The literal ending of the world seems like such an abstract concept that many people refuse to believe that such harmful events as global warming are contributing to mankind’s destruction. But the idea that humans are indeed heavily contributing to their inevitable deaths can be seen in the new sci-fi drama ’4:44 Last Day on Earth,’ which was directed and written by Abel Ferrara and is now playing in select theaters. ’4:44 Last Day on Earth’ chronicles the turbulent romantic relationship between successful actor Cisco (played by Willem Dafoe) and the younger, insecure painter Skye (portrayed by Shanyn Leigh). The insecurities people contend with about their self-worth are also driving factors in how people act. Figuring out how to spend the last hours on Earth before death, and coming to terms with the idea that mortality is something everyone must face in life, puts the value of life high on many people’s priority lists. While not technically a horror movie, 4:44 Last Day On Earth (2012) still manages to pack a terrifying, if quiet, punch. Written and directed by maverick filmmaker Abel Ferrara (Bad Leiutenant {1992}, The Funeral {1996}, Ms. 45 {1981}) 4:44 takes an intimate look at a Bohemian couple living out their final day on Earth.
Cisco (Willem Dafoe) is a successful actor living with his artist girlfriend Skye (Shanyn Leigh) on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. As the title suggests, life on Earth will cease to exist on this particular day at 4:44 Am due to humanity’s failure to do anything about climate change. Cisco and Skye say their goodbyes to loved ones via Skype, while in between they meditate, make love, and order Chinese food for dinner. Skye is also furiously trying to finish her painting while Cisco goes to visit friends in just one of a...

Director Abel Ferrara is known for releasing films that are, if nothing else, extremely bold. His latest flick, 4:44 Last Day on Earth, showed recently in New York, and IFC sent over some cameras to grab the audience's reaction. Dig it!

There's something very wrong in Abel Ferrara's "4:44: Last Day On Earth." The world, as the title would suggest, is coming to an end, and Ferrara, the fuck-you auteur behind "King of New York" and the non-Nic Cage-adorned "Bad Lieutenant," is content with keeping things inside a spacious apartment on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. There aren't any fireballs ascending heavenward, or steely buildings splintering into a million computer-generated pieces. The anguish here isn't global, but personal, and instead of millions of people, Ferrara zeroes in on an arty couple, played by Willem Dafoe (channeling his "Antichrist" persona of earnest concern, except with more levity and less genital mutilation) and the young Shanyn Leigh.
What has happened, exactly, is sort of a mystery. (There's a lot that's undefined in '4:44.' Ferrara wasn't quite sure, for example, which one of the couple could afford the apartment...

(Abel Ferrara’s 4:44 Last Day on Earth premiered at the 68th Venice Film Festival. It’s being released theatrically by IFC Films on March 23, 2012.)
A number of recent films have collectively suggested that the more global, or even cosmic, the crisis, the more intimate the response. This was done most recently in Perfect Sense but also last summer’s Another Earth and, to a lesser extent, The Tree of Life, about which it might be more accurate to say that the cosmic is crafted from the intimate. (Melancholia breaks from this trend somewhat, and its cold remove is part of what makes it so disconcerting a film.) This art-house apocalypse continues in Abel Ferrara’s 4:44 Last Day on Earth, one of whose touchstones is a close-up on two lovers’ bodies as they sleep together: this, the longtime writer-director says repeatedly, is how we console ourselves in times of crisis.

Abel Ferrara is a handful. With wild gestures and expertly timed jokes, he piles the digressions high, but is much sharper and in control than his legendarily hard-living persona would suggest. The sixty-one-year-old has had one of American indie cinema’s most eclectic careers. A Bronx native, Ferrara has made his way from 42nd Street’s row of exploitation and porn theaters to the Croissette in Cannes. He mantains a manic, youthful energy that is both infectious and a bit terrifying, and although since he became sober over a year ago he has mellowed a bit, the toll that years of less-than-legal substances has taken has certainly not affected the filmmaker's wit or broad-hearted sensibility.
His new film, "4:44 Last Day On Earth," was shot early last spring and was initially slated to star Ethan Hawke. Some sources have claimed that Hawke dropped out after shooting had begun, rumors that Ferrara declined to address.

Shanyn Leigh's name won't ring any bells for most people right now, but that very well may change with the release of 4:44 Last Day On Earth. Directed by her boyfriend, Abel Ferrara, Leigh gives an intense performance as an artist living in conflict with her lover (an equally intense Willem Dafoe) as the end of the world approaches. To say that Leigh "puts it all out there" would be accurate, but it would also be understating the boldness she displays in the picture. Last week,...

I used to believe, like Wenders or Godard, in the death of cinema. I accepted it as fact but never believed in it. The movies, that’s what I believed in—a dark room, shadows on a surface, a bunch of lonely people sitting down, looking up.
Like Leos Carax to Serge Daney, Abel Ferrara showed me there’d be cinema ‘til the end of the world.
***
At first I thought Abel Ferrara’s films were badly acted; I soon realized Ferrara would take bad acting with truth in it over a masterpiece of falsehoods. (Later I found out that Ferrara would, in Dangerous Game and New Rose Hotel, use one to create the other.)
I thought his films were too commercial. “Already captivated by cinema, I didn’t need to be seduced as well,” as Serge Daney put it. Hollywood in the 21st century is a highly sophisticated marketing ploy.

After doing more than a quick tease by releasing the first twelve minutes of their cult drama Sound of My Voice, Fox Searchlight has now debuted the official poster for the film, starring Brit Marling (Another Earth, Arbitrage). We called Zal Batmanglij’s debut “completely realistic, completely plausible with “a looming sense of uneasiness buried beneath the surface that keeps you unnerved and engulfed. It’s movies like this that make film festivals worth going to.” The design, also highlighting the preview, is more of the same well-torn look, but works for a film like this, almost like a book cover.
We’ve also got the theatrical poster for Abel Ferrara’s 4:44 Last Day on Earth, which stars Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh as a couple in NYC who are preparing for the apocalypse. The design seems to be pulled straight from a still, with lots of Photoshop working touching up the rest.

As it turns out, 4:44 Last Day On Earth is his highest-profile release in some years. There's even a trailer!Taking place in New York, the film follows Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh (Mrs Ferrara) as Cisko and Skye, a couple greeting an incoming armageddon by arguing and having sex. Cisko then leaves their apartment for a heroin-fuelled nighttime odyssey, before the deadline of 4:44am, after which, it's all over. As a newscaster calmly states at the start of the clip, "It doesn't matter where you live or how much money you have; we're all about to face the same fate at the same moment."This being Ferrara, we're on an ultra-low budget, but it's amazing what you can do with stock footage. It's the year 2012, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised that we are suddenly getting a handful of movies about the end of the world. Still, how can you possibly top Roland Emmerich's 2012? (I'm only half-joking.) Director Abel Ferrara is taking an interesting approach with his new film, 4:44 Last Day on Earth, in that he seems to be playing it fairly straight. There are no sci-fi or action elements, it is simply a dramatic look at the lives of several people in New York City facing the end of the world. The movie stars Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh as a New York couple trying their best to deal with the impending apocalypse. He is an actor and she is a painter, but as the tension mounts, they "they sink into the havens of sex and art." Ferrara is the same guy who brought us such films as...

Indie director Abel Ferrara (Bad Lieutenant) is back behind the camera and this time he’s showing up one of the last days on Earth, is it just me or there a lot of that going on these days? 4:44 Last Day On Earth in particular looks pretty interesting with the realism factor working for it, one scene here with a jumper we will call him just looks terrifying.

It’s nice to see the world ending without alien intervention or consumed by a CG whirlwind, and 4:44 Last Day on Earth saddles up alongside recent cinematic apocalypses including Perfect Sense, Children of Men and Melancholia as another example of a visually understated but emotionally powerful end of days.
Abel Ferrara’s film made an impression on the festival circuit last year and is out on limited release in a month’s time in the States so there’s a new trailer to celebrate this fact, and it certainly worked its magic on me. Sadly there’s no UK release date anywhere so it may fly straight onto Blu-ray without a cinematic release which would be a shame.
Speaking in Venice last year Ferrara introduced the film as ‘about man’s destruction of the Earth’,

Here's the trailer to an interesting little indie film called 4:44 Last Day On Earth, and the story it tells leads up to the end of the world. The film stars Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh as a couple living in New York City. The movie basically follows the last few hours of their lives before the world ends at 4:44 Am the next day. The movie comes from the mind of Abel Ferrara, it looks like an interesting flick, and you can't go wrong with Dafoe.
Here's the synopsis for the film:
In a large apartment high above the city lives our couple. They're in love. She's a painter, he's a successful actor. Just a normal afternoon - except that this isn't a normal afternoon, for them or anyone else. Because tomorrow, at 4:44 am, give or take a few seconds, the world will come to an end far...

If it were our last day on Earth, we're not quite sure we'd wanna spend it with Willem Dafoe, but hey, I guess if the apocalypse were coming, you just have to make do with who you've got. As long as he doesn't pull any of that talking to himself Green Goblin crap, everything will be okay.
Below you'll find the first trailer and still for the next apocalyptic film headed our way, 4:44 Last Day on Earth. The flick, which is directed by the always odd Abel Ferrara, stars Dafoe along with Paz de la Huerta, Shanyn Leigh, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Hipp, and Dierdra McDowell. Look for it in theaters and On Demand on March 23rd.

Someone, somewhere deserves some credit when you watch a trailer for a film that you've already read negative reviews for, yet the trailer still makes you want to see it. That was the case for this writer when watching the trailer for Abel Ferrara's apocalyptic "4:44: Last Day On Earth." Our reviewer saw the film at Nyff last year and found that "for all its arty posturing, there's something anticlimactic and ultimately unfulfilling about the film." If that's the case then that's a real shame, because this is a fairly promising preview. "4:44 Last Day On Earth" stars Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh as an arty New York couple who have to decide how to spend their last day on Earth before it combusts at 4:44 the next morning (hence the title). The trailer itself looks suitably intimate and epic at the same time, but we can also...

Abel Ferrera has had an interesting career as a filmmaker, diving deep into the ugliness of the human condition with the majority of his films. He's never had a major commercial hit, but it likely doesn't matter to him. He's continued to churn out films since his 1979 debut Driller Killer up to his most talked about Bad Lieutenant and now with 4:44 Last Day On Earth, starring Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh (Public Enemies). The trailer is full of what you'd...

Aside from the original Bad Lieutenant and possibly the Christopher Walken-starring The Funeral, director Abel Ferrara has been able to make his independent dramas despite little recognition from audiences. His latest is another in a wave of films dealing with the end-of-the-world theme (see Melancholia and the upcoming Seeking a Friend, as well doom-filled dramas like Take Shelter).
Titled 4:44 Last Day on Earth, I’ve actually heard nothing but bad things about this one on the festival circuit for the film that stars Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh as a couple in NYC who are preparing for the apocalypse. Dafoe is at least always interesting to watch, but I’ve never liked Ferrara’s style so I’ll likely skip this one. Check out the trailer below via IMDb for the film also starring Paz de la Huerta.

The original King of Indie Abel Ferrara made a stop at Emir Kusturica’s Küstendorf Film and Music Festival this January to screen his latest film 4:44 Last Day on Earth. The Loisaida-set film paints a picture of addiction at the end of the world, starring Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh. Ferrara has always felt a connection to Kusturica, and felt very welcome at Küstendorf, the Serbian director’s wooden village high in the mountains of Mokra Gora. “We just kinda have a connection, other than I look like him,” Ferrera told me, minutes before entering a workshop to discuss the film with students who had descended upon the festival from all around the world to learn from the week’s line-up of cinema greats. Also at the fest were Kim Ki-Duk (Korea), Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Turkey), Marjane Satrapi (France), the Dardenne Brothers (Belgium), Andreas Dresen (Germany) and Frederikke Aspock (Denmark).

4:44 Last Day On Earth Click here to read the review! "The countdown to the apocalypse becomes a celebratory wake in Abel Ferrara’s transcendent 4:44: Last Day on Earth. Eschewing sci-fi escapism for a raw and intimate portrait of a New York artist couple (Willem Dafoe, and Ferrara’s real-life redhead girlfriend, Shanyn Leigh) riding out the end of times -- guaranteed to hit at 4:44Am-- in their Lower East Side apartment, Ferrara’s personal film is likely to flummox filmgoers and critics inured to the cheap thrills of CGI bombast and fashionably empty nihilism."...

Title: 4:44 Last Day On Earth Director: Abel Ferrara Cast: Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh The end of the world seems to be a theme from movies of 2011. Movies like “Melancholia” and “Take Shelter” seem to explore notions of how people act and react to the end of everything. Maybe it has to do with the superstition of the 2012 predictions of the end of the world, but regardless, this notion has seem to captivate filmmakers. In the new film from director, Abel Ferrara, “4:44 Last Day On Earth” seems to follow suit, but in this regard, this is a more horrible failure than the actual end of the...

4:44 Last Day on Earth
Directed by Abel Ferrara
Written by Abel Ferrara
2011, USA
Following the trend of doomsday as with Melancholia, Abel Ferrara brings his own take on the genre with 4:44 Last Day on Earth. Willem Dafoe stars as Cisco, a New York City actor who lives with his younger lover Skye (Shanyn Leigh) as they live out their last day on Earth. By 4:44am the next morning, Earth as anyone knows it will experience a total meltdown and survivors will be nonexistent. As they go through their day together, they find themselves partaking in their last intimate moments and simple pleasures along with resisting the temptations to slip into bad habits and figuring out what to make of everything. By no means a big film, 4:44 is a slice into the life of an everyday city couple struggling to figure out what to do with the time they have left.

4:44 Last Day on Earth Abel Ferrara’s small new film is filled with gestures of cinema. It takes place in the small hours before the end of the world in a artist’s loft in the Lower East Side of New York where a two lovers, played by Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh, spend their time making love, painting, and emotionally processing their remanning time in this world. Nearly the entire picture is set in this loft space, which gives room to Dafoe to rant and monologue, questioning himself and the world, while Leigh, in her corner, is more contained and expresses herself, mysteriously and silently, by painting.
The two come together to fuck and part to deal with things alone, and despite the attic-lovers push and pull and the end of the world setting, Ferrara is not making a Borzage romance; we do not feel the tactile, transcendent...

The last two days were bad days for me at the festival. Films I had high hopes for proved to be less that satisfying and smaller films that I hoped would surprise me didn't.
People Mountain, People Sea
This was the ‘surprise film’ of the Competition section of the festival announced just a few minutes before its first press screening. But this was not the only surprise for the press attending. Halfway through the film smoke started coming out of a headlight in the screening room and many journalists started running towards the exits panicked. The screening was interrupted, the firemen came and fixed the problem that could have resulted in a fire. After 25 minutes the screening resumed and the remaining critics watched the rest of the story. The movie is about a man Lao Tie in a small province of China who realizes that the local police force are...

Venice, Italy -- Abel Ferrara made his new film "4:44 Last Day on Earth" to serve as a wake-up call to humanity over impending ecological disasters.
The movie, by the director of 1992's "Bad Lieutenant," focuses largely on one couple – played by Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh – passing their final hours on Earth as they Skype their goodbyes to loved ones from a New York City high-rise.
"The bottom line is this film is about man's destruction of the Earth," Ferrara told reporters Wednesday in Venice, where the film is being shown in hopes of snaring the top Golden Lion prize later this week.
"This isn't about a meteorite, this isn't ... some horror show. This is about humanity not coming to terms with its carbon footprint," the director said. "It's on us. It's our responsibility."
The time in the title is the exact hour before dawn when humanity ceases to exist.

Venice, Italy (Reuters) - Director Abel Ferrara ponders how we would behave knowing death was coming to us all in an environmental disaster in "4:44 Last Day on Earth," his latest film starring Willem Dafoe.
The movie, one of 23 in the main competition at the Venice film festival, has its world premiere Wednesday as the annual cinema showcase enters the final stretch ahead of Saturday's awards.
In the film Dafoe plays Cisco, a successful actor, while Shanyn Leigh portrays his partner, an artist, in the actress's first lead role.

Today marks the first day of the 68thVenice Film Festival (La Biennale di Venezia 2011). The festival continues through September 10th and will include films from all over the world making their debut before curious eyes. This year’s line-up includes a wide range of films from talented directors that have worked in genre films before or are taking the first step into the world of horror, sci-fi, cult, or bizarre cinema. Some of these directors include David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome), William Friedkin (The Exorcist, Bug), Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In), Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven), Roman Polanski (Rosemary’s Baby, Repulsion), and Abel Ferrara (The Driller Killer, Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant). All of these directors have clearly made an impact on the genres that we know and love, and I look forward to seeing what they have to offer us this year. Keep reading to hear...
