Monkey Man is one of the most imaginative action films to come out sometimes and it comes from a first-time director who also stars in the lead role Dev Patel. Described as “Indian John Wick,” the action-thriller film follows the story of a young underground fighter who goes on a rampage against the city’s elite to avenge the injustices done by them to his mother and village. Monkey Man also stars Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Makarand Deshpande, Sharlto Copley, Brahim Achabbakhe, Ashwini Kalshekar, Pitobash Tripathy, and Vipin Sharma. So, if you loved the action and heartfelt story told in Monkey Man by the first passionate first-time director Dev Patel, here are some similar movies you should check out next.

On the morning of December 27th, 2023, the world woke up to the shocking news that top star actor Lee Sun-kyun, known the world over for his performance in the Academy Award-winning “Parasite” among many other great films”, was found dead in his car, reportedly from carbon monoxide poisoning. The much-loved actor, who was the subject of a police investigation for drugs related allegations at the time, had decided to take his own life at a time when he was quite possibly at the height of success in his career.
While it is not our aim to discuss the details surrounding the case or the role that the media and the police had to play in pushing the actor to the brink, we would like a lot of his fans celebrate the fantastic legacy of work that the actor, known for his unconventional good looks, inherent charm and a unique voice,...

Following the massive global success of Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, as one might expect, Hollywood is now looking at South Korea for ideas when it comes to their upcoming slate. While Ari Aster is set to produce Save the Green Planet!, some long-in-development Hollywood remakes of South Korean hits are now getting revived.
Deadline reports that the 2010 Jeong-beom Lee revenge actioner The Man From Nowhere, which was actually already remade in Bollywood under the name Rocky Handsome, is now in the hands of the John Wick team after other iterations attempted to get off the ground this past decade. John Wick director Chad Stahelski will produce the project while writer Derek Kolstad will take scripting duties, and a search for the director will get underway soon.

Exclusive: The partnership between the team behind the John Wick franchise continues as we are hearing Chad Stahelski is coming on to produce New Line’s remake of the 2010 South Korean Pic The Man From Nowhere, with Derek Kolstad penning the script. Stathelski directed all three John Wick films with Kolstad serving as writer. That franchise continues to be a monster at the box-office with the most recent film grossing $326 million at the Worldwide box-office.
The Man From Nowhere was the highest grossing film in South Korea during its year of release making $42M. The pic, directed and written by Jeong-beom Lee opened to No. 1 and held that spot for five weeks. The original film centered around a quiet pawnshop keeper with a violent past who takes on a drug-and-organ trafficking ring in hope of saving the child who is his only friend.
Stahelski will produce with Jason Spitz through their 87Eleven Entertainment production banner.

Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage, directed by Lee Jeong-beom, stars Lee Sun-kyun as the titular character. A washed-up double-crossing crooked detective who on his latest illegal exploit is uncovered in a larger underground criminal conspiracy scheme that splits his personal life and career in half.
Think a Korean spin on Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver meets Abel Ferrera’s Bad Lieutenant. The story itself, written by Lee Jeong-beom and Im Beom, isn’t all that dissimilar from your usual anti-hero detective thriller born out of conventional genre tropes and flood the South Korean market. However, Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage offers a decent escapade for its audience, with a balance of tone that works perfectly in a less than the harsh approach to the material that could easily be overly muddled and dark.

Exclusive: John Wick creator Derek Kolstad is adapting the 2010 South Korean action film The Man From Nowhere for New Line Cinema.
This is the second South Korean hit of late which New Line is putting into development for U.S. audiences. Back in September New Line beat out four other studios for the remake rights to Sang-ho Yeon’s Train to Busan, which Gary Dauberman is writing and James Wan producing. Deadline had that exclusive.

If there’s one thing Hollywood loves doing, it’s adapting foreign material to Americanize it — because everyone hates subtitles, right? — and generally upping the action, streamlining the plot, and often completely missing or scrapping subtext that is crucial to the socio-political structure of where it originated. A new subtext rarely replaces it, leaving viewers with a less-than-satisfactory reboot of something less than a decade old.
So comes the announcement via Deadline that New Line has acquired the rights to a remake of the 2010 Jeong-beom Lee revenge actioner The Man From Nowhere, which was actually already remade in Bollywood under the name Rocky Handsome, released just a few months ago. A number of Sound On Sight editors and contributors are geographically fortunate enough to make the Fantasia Film Festival an annual must-attend event. I have never been to the festival, but have followed it from afar since it landed on my radar years ago when a well-received short film I had a major acting role in called My Sweet Satan, played there.
This year’s lineup of films strikes me as substantially more intriguing than the programs of the last couple of years. Given Fantasia’s staggering breadth of programming spread across multiple weeks, the challenge is in trying to narrow a ‘most anticipated’ list down to just five films. My picks, in alphabetical order, are as follows.

"Who... are you?" Today's indie trailer is the first official teaser for a kinetic South Korean action film titled No Tears for the Dead, from Jeong-beom Lee of the 2010 revenge film The Man from Nowhere. In this new film, Jang Dong-gun stars along with Kim Min-hee in a "love story between a professional hitman and his next target". While that kind of story could go either way on screen, this one goes for a much more energetic, explosive feeling. I'm not sure what is with the English subtitles for English-spoken dialogue, but aside from that, this actually looks pretty cool with a few great shots (like the one seen above). Take a look. Watch the first teaser trailer for Jeong-beom Lee's No Tears for the Dead, direct from YouTube: From the Cj Entertainment description: A love story between a professional hitman and his next target. South Korean filmmaker Jeong-beom Lee is badass. I know I say that a lot about South Korean directors, but Lee is particularly awesome. “The Man from Nowhere” is a tidy thriller worthy of your attention. In fact, anyone who subscribes to Netflix streaming should take a moment to check it out. It will prove once again how Hollywood has seriously dropped the ball in the thriller department. Need proof? Watch Robert Luketic’s “Paranoia” and get back to me. Jeong-beom Lee is ready to bring his magic touch back to theaters across South Korea with the upcoming flick “Crying Man,” a film about a professional assassin and the person he’s tasked with killing. I’m sure there’s more going on than that, but this logline is essentially all we have to work with at the moment. “Crying Man,” which stars Dong-gun Jang, Min-hee Kim, and Han-na Kang, opens in South Korea this June.

Dimension is the latest to try their hand at the South Korean remake game, with TheWrap reporting that Bob Weinstein‘s tribe are transplanting The Man from Nowhere to American screens. Originally directed by Jeong-beom Lee, The Man from Nowhere (South Korea’s highest-grossing film of 2010) focuses on “a pawn shop owner who takes on a drug-and-organ trafficking ring to save his only friend, a child.” Abduction writer Shawn Christensen is on scripting duties; no director has been announced yet.
Weinstein spoke out about the undertaking, claiming that Nowhere will see Dimension “getting back into the [action] genre in a big way,” with the film offering “a slick, fast-paced action thriller anchored by a strong emotional relationship that audiences are going to love.” Encouraging comments are all well and good from a business perspective, yet I do raise an eyebrow at the original’s middling reviews — something the finer South Korean exports (Oldboy,...

Here’s the deal: I liked “The Man from Nowhere” starring Bin Won, and directed by Jeong-beom Lee. I liked it enough to recommend it in a couple of 2011 lists. But while recommending it, I also realize that it’s highly derivative of a couple of Hollywood movies, like “Taken” and in particular, the Denzel Washington film “Man on Fire”, and said so in my review. As such, I find it somewhat ironic (or is that amusing?) that Dimension Films has now snapped up remake rights to the film, and has already set “Abduction” writer Shawn Christensen to take a swing at it. The original “Man from Nowhere” starred Bin Won as a lonely pawn shop owner with one of those deadly pasts usually reserved for characters played by Steven Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme. You know, he’s the best at what he does, and what he does isn’t very pretty.

Director: Jeong-beom Lee. Review: Adam Wing. What do you get when you cross action-thriller Taken with The Bourne Identity? One of Korea’s biggest movies of 2010, that’s what. The Man From Nowhere was both a commercial and critical hit back home, picking up Blue Dragon, Daejong and Korean Film Awards along the way. Won Bin (Mother) won Best Actor at the Daejong and Korean Film Awards, and it’s not hard to see why - The Man from Nowhere brings with it one of the coolest action heroes of the last ten years. It’s a simple concept - a mysterious agent goes to desperate lengths in order to save a girl - which makes way for stylised action and emotional drive. So-mi is played by award-winning child actress Kim Se Ron, and writer-director Lee Jeong Beom takes to the action-thriller genre like a duck to water, adding a...

If you are in anyway cognisant of cultural trends in cinema, you would be aware that the far east, and especially South Korea, has had- in the last decade- a clear penchant for stylish, hyper-violent thrillers, preferably with heavy themes of vengeance and redemption. By all accounts The Man From Nowhere represents the zenith of this movement.
The film- a sophomore effort from Jeong-beom Lee (Cruel Winter Blues)- has been available in Korea since August last year and subsequent to meeting with across the board critical praise, went on to storm the box office before dominating that country’s film awards, including a best actor award for the brooding Won Bin (Mother) who plays a lonely and isolated pawn-shop broker with only a little girl for a friend. When a drugs cartel becomes intent upon using the girl for his evil ends, Bin sheds his hermitic lifestyle and combats the crime gang head on.

Hopefully by now Twitch readers will have noticed that we quite like Jeong-beom Lee's The Man From Nowhere round here. It's a top-notch blockbuster with action, humour and pathos to spare, all wrapped up in a relentless revenge narrative.Sure, there's little new in terms of plot but it's carried through with such conviction you'll struggle not to be won over. Plus, it ends in classic heroic bloodshed style with an epic final showdown. In honour of its UK DVD release we have a pretty damn awesome new trailer for you. Light on dialogue, it does however give you a minute and a half of superior carnage...The Man From Nowhere is out on UK DVD from 11th April through eOne....

I wouldn't say I'm a knowledge in Asian cinema; I've seen some of the required viewing films like Oldboy and a few of Kurosawa's works, as well as ones like House of Flying Daggers and Hero, to name just a few. But despite my not having experienced many more of these movies, I'm always excited to see a new one. Running with this excitement, I was able to watch a movie recently that I had absolutely no prior knowledge of, knew nothing about the premise or story, and had not even seen a trailer for -- a movie called The Man From Nowhere.

I wouldn't say I'm a knowledge in Asian cinema; I've seen some of the required viewing films like Oldboy and a few of Kurosawa's works, as well as ones like House of Flying Daggers and Hero, to name just a few. There's slim pickin's on the DVD front this week ... unless you like to watch a group of crazy guys put themselves into dangerous situations just to get a laugh -- in which case 'Jackass 3D' is for you. 'Jackass' is bookended by a weak comedy ('Morning Glory') and a weak thriller ('The Next Three Days'). But there's a surprise waiting for you: 'The Man From Nowhere,' a fast-paced, hard-boiled actioner from South Korean director Jeong-beom Lee that reminds one of, well, 'Hard Boiled.' Read on.

Not a huge week for new Blu-Ray releases, but there are certainly a few of significant noteworthiness… and, Triple H is not one of them. Sorry, to all the wrestling fans out there. Resurrected from the 80′s are the slasher flick The Dorm That Dripped Blood and John Boorman’s Excalibur, an under-appreciated telling of the times of Kign Arthur.
*Perhaps the best documentary of 2010, Exit Through The Gift Shop is an intriguing film about art and artist, and the personality in between, but it’s also an adventure into a world with which few of us have any experience. Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job is a documentary about the recent financial meltdown.
*Indicated that I actually feel it Is the best, but am attempting to be impartial.

[Editor's note: I've asked our team of world film correspondents to dish out their top 5 films of the year from their respective countries. Here's Tony Kitchen's take on the Best in South Korean Cinema in 2010.] In 2010, the Korean film industry continued in its strong stride having several domestic hits such as spy flick Secret Reunion and Kim Jee-woon's controversial Venice and Tiff Film Festival selected I Saw the Devil, while the world film festival circuit, Korean film faired well with Lee Chang-dong grabbing center spot with Poetry in Cannes. Hong Sang-soo produced a pair of offerings including the Un Certain Regard winner Ha Ha Ha, Cheol So Jang's debut film Bedeviled made a splash on the far side of the Croisette, Im Sang-soo's remake of The Housemaid with Jeon Do-yeon left no one indifferent while the remake of the '66 classic Late Autumn via helmer Kim Tae-yong and thesp Tang Wei was shown at Tiff. Here are the top 5 Korean films of 2010.#5. Ha Ha Ha (Sang-soo Hong) The unconventionality of this film, and its direction style, made this movie one of Korea's best in 2010. Sang-soo uses still shots,...

At the time of showing, The Man From Nowhere was yet to find a UK distributor, with the very real prospect that it will never be screened again in the UK. That would be a great shame as it's just the sort of blockbuster-with-a-soul that we're sorely lacking. A crime thriller with more than a passing resemblance to its forebears, it also manages to find its own voice and overcome the genre clichés that threaten to hamper it.

"Inception" by a length!
In yet another down-to-the-wire weekend on the foreign theatrical circuit, Warner Bros.' "Inception" reclaimed the No. 1 overseas box office crown, nosing past the previous champ, independently distributed action title "The Expendables."
What sealed "Inception's" return to box office supremacy was its huge, No. 1 opening in China, which Warners declared was the fourth biggest logged in that market by any non-Chinese title. Five-day tally is estimated by Warners to be $13.6 million thanks to some from 2.6 million admissions clocked at about 3,300 screens.
Director Christopher Nolan's sci-fi thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio has breezed past the $400 million foreign gross mark in eight rounds of offshore release (cume $418.9 million), rolling up $24.4 million on the weekend overall from some 8,200 screens 60 markets.
"Inception" took first place offshore in the opening three weekends of last month while "Expendables" muscled its way to the top on Aug. 22 and Aug. 29.

Hoorah for South Korean cinema! Not a day goes by that I don’t read an article featuring a film from this insanely production region that I cannot wait to get my Purcell-coated hands on. Jeong-Beom Lee’s upcoming action/thriller “The Man From Nowhere” is yet another promising endeavor that has popped up on my radar recently, thanks in part to the hard-working individuals at the always-reliable Film Smash. The teaser trailer, as well as the film’s official poster, have been included for your infinite, endless entertainment. Before we get to the good stuff, a quick plot synopsis: An ex-special agent Cha Tae-sik’s only connection to the rest of the world is a little girl, So-mi, who lives nearby. So-mi’s mother, Hyo-jeong smuggles drugs from a drug trafficking organization and entrusts Tae-sik with the product, without letting him know. When the traffickers find out they kidnap both Hyo-jeong and So-mi.
