Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
The world of “Bridgerton” is no stranger to competition. Among London’s elite, wealthy debutantes and ambitious suitors vie for attention and supremacy on every level, from status and title to the very notion of a “diamond” — the best the season has to offer. What better way to celebrate the eagerly awaited Season 3 (Part 1 now streaming and Part 2 due June 13) than by revisiting past and previous diamonds?
Now that there are fully 20 of them out in the world, we decided to rank the best “Bridgerton” episodes, and to not overly favor any one season over another. A show doesn’t become an overnight popular horny period sensation without some certified bangers (pun intended), so we revisited Seasons 1 and 2 along with Season 3 – Part 1 to pull the greatest hits.

Dearest readers: It’s Bridgerton Week at IndieWire. We’re celebrating the new season by diving deep on one of the best romance shows on TV.
When “Bridgerton” first premiered on Netflix at the end of 2020, one could argue it was received with fascination above all. Though executive producer Shonda Rhimes had already built up a brand with elements that viewers would expect from every TV show that bears her name, this collaboration with creator Chris Van Dusen was taking a lot of big swings in its attempt to adapt Julia Quinn’s beloved romance series.
There was the diverse casting, the idea that it was taking the romance TV genre to the most mainstream platform it has ever had, and that it was a costume drama with a noticeable budget at that, but one innovative piece of its success that goes underwritten is the inclusion of an anachronistic score.

Falling for a TV show is not exactly like falling for a romantic relationship. But it’s not unlike it, either. There’s the initial flirtation, when you sample an episode or two to see how it strikes you. If all goes well, there’s the moment of commitment, when you decide to stick around to see the story play out. Then there’s the long haul: With each successive season, the series has the opportunity to deepen and mature — or to stagnate.
With its third outing (fourth if you count the spinoff Queen Charlotte), Netflix’s Bridgerton is no longer in the early days of its courtship with us, and unfortunately, it’s starting to show. While the latest chapter faithfully delivers on everything we’ve come to expect from this world — virginal heroine, rakish hero, high-society scandal, instrumental pop covers — it’s also the first in which the...

“When Harry Met Sally,” “13 Going on 30,” “Past Lives” and even “Spider-Man” have all included the complicated friends-to-lovers trope. Now, “Bridgerton” could be added to list as the latest season sees romance blossom between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) as they finally make it out of the friend zone.
“The more I speak to people, the more I’m starting to realize how a lot of people have experienced it in one way or another, even my loved ones. From one Mr. Bridgerton to another: Luke Newton opened up about how he took inspiration from former Bridgerton leading man, Jonathan Bailey, before taking on one of the main roles in the hit Netflix series’ third season.

Bridgerton takes a subgenre called Regency Romance and turns it into a powerful statement. At the same time, it violates all the canons of the genre, and it is the greatest advantage of the modern golden age of serial production: viewers want to see old stories told in new ways, and platforms are willing to pay their best writers any amount of money to realize their wildest ideas.
The showrunner and screenwriter of the series, Chris Van Dusen, made a very important decision: he mixed the two-hundred-year-old costume story with relevant modern issues.
Almost Every Aspect of Bridgerton is Modernized, Except One
The screen world of Bridgerton is not good old England at all, but the modern world, simply transferred to the 19th century. Ladies and gentlemen dance to orchestral versions of Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Maroon 5 songs. The characters communicate with each other in a made-up version of...

Bridgerton Season 3 is bringing Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin’s (Luke Newton) love story to life from Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton. However, a key character from Polin’s book is not featured in the Netflix show at all: Felicity Featherington. Another Featherington sister?! Yes, there’s another one in the book series! Felicity is closest to Penelope within the Featherington family and the youngest sibling. She’s also a dear friend to Hyacinth Bridgerton. In the Netflix series, Penelope only has two siblings, Prudence (Bessie Carter) and Philippa (Harriet Cains). Showrunner Jess Brownell explains Felicity’s absence in the show to TV Insider. “I think [that] was a smart decision. I think that was a decision made by Chris Van Dusen and Shonda [Rhimes] early on in the pilot,” Brownell says. “It just gets hard to characterize three siblings, especially when the Featheringtons are in a secondary position. And off-limits, with a rule against fraternizing between housemates after unwanted drama with the previous girl. Abbey has never considered herself a rulebreaker. Bridgerton became a significant hit almost immediately when it debuted on Netflix in late 2020.
The series, created by Chris Van Dusen under the banner of Shonda Rhimes' Shondaland, dealt with the dating machinations of the upper classes in Regency-era England.
The second season arrived on Netflix in 2022, with a spinoff, Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, debuting on the service in the spring of 2023.
Now, the main Bridgerton series is set to return to Netflix with a two-part third season after the show was renewed for third and fourth seasons back in 2021.
The new season will consist of two halves, each lasting four episodes, with the first four arriving on May 16 and the second four on June 13.
Initially set for release in 2023, the third season was delayed to 2024.
While production was complete before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Netflix reportedly did not want to release the show at a time when the actors were not available to promote it.

“Even a wallflower can bloom.”
That’s the cute tagline for “Bridgerton” Season 3, which premieres in two blocks on Netflix in May and June. On Thursday, Netflix released a trailer for the third installment of Shondaland’s hit historical romance that should set fans’ hearts a-flutter.
Season 3 follows the friends-to-lovers courtship of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton). Penelope, the pseudonymous author of the Lady Whistledown gossip column, has always been an observer of love, but never a participant. So when Colin, whom she’s had a crush on for ages, returns to London, he decides to help her find a husband, as a sort of penance for the cruel things she heard him say about her last season. But he starts to suspect that he knows the right man for her very well, know what I’m saying?

Dear reader, does star-crossed romance ever go out of style? Apparently not, based on the rabid response to Netflix's ever-popular "Bridgerton" series that's now set to debut its third torrid season. By now, even those who don't watch the streaming phenomenon can't help but feel intimately familiar with the politics of the Ton, their fondness for extravagant parties, and the heartrending tendency for even the most different of friends -- and oftentimes even enemies -- to fall hopelessly in lust love with each other.
That's the main theme of the season 3 trailer, newly released by Netflix this morning. It's actually been quite some time since season 2 came and went in March of 2022, which centered on the roguish Viscount Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and his fiery attraction to Kate Sheffield (Simone Ashley), and the familiar voiceover narration is keenly aware of that fact. As the voice of Lady Whistledown (Julie Andrews) declares at the top of the “Bridgerton” Season 3 trailer — it has been far too long.
After more than two years away, the steamy Netflix series based on Julia Quinn’s novels returns, this time to tell the story of Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Nicola Coughlan). Unlike previous seasons, both leads in this installment are already familiar to the hungry “Bridgerton” fanbase, as is the romantic trope of friends to lovers.
The trailer for Part 1 (four episodes) shows Penelope and Colin rekindling their friendship after Colin returns from Europe so strikingly handsome that even his siblings notice; he offers to coach Penelope in how to charm suitors so that she may find a suitable husband, but the teaching process has Colin wondering about his own feelings. That’s all complicated by the arrival of Lord Debling (Sam Phillips), who is actively seeking a wife.

Nicola Coughlan plays Penelope Featherington, the youngest daughter in the Featherington family, in Netflix’s historical romance-drama Bridgerton. Coughlan’s character was portrayed as a reluctant debutante in Regency-era London. The Big Mood actress had several steamy scenes throughout the two seasons of the show. Since Coughlan’s family is Irish Catholic and would not be happy about these scenes in the series, the actress had a special clause written into her contract.

Bridgerton was created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shondaland for Netflix. The show’s second season broke Netflix records, ultimately leading to its renewal for third and fourth seasons. The third season will drop on the streaming platform in two parts this year.

Nicola Coughlan is revealing one stipulation in her Bridgerton contract that is actually more for her parents.
The actress, who plays Penelope Featherington in the hit Netflix period drama, shared in a recent interview with SiriusXM Hits 1, via The Independent, that she demanded the show provide an alternate cut of season three with less nudity to show her family.
“It’s literally written into my contract,” Coughlan said. “People think I’m like saying it as a joke. I just don’t want to. I grew up Irish Catholic. That’s just not how we vibe.”
The Derry Girls actress, who appeared throughout Bridgerton‘s first two seasons, has previously talked about the “spicy” upcoming season, which centers on her character being courted by Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton. She told Entertainment Tonight last year that “a lot of the stuff from the books that the fans expect has made it into the show.

This marks a rare new addition to Zuiker’s close-knit representation team, nicknamed affectionately by the writer-producer “Team Zuiker,” who has been shaping his career and brand for more than two decades.

In a moving tribute for Deadline at the time, Zuiker recalled how Riley signed Zuiker on his 30th birthday, 8/17/1998, when he was still trying to break into Hollywood. Helping him land early writing gigs that led to CSI, Riley also took Zuiker to the talent agencies, with him landing at CAA with Joe Cohen, and introduced him to entertainment lawyer Kevin Yorn. Nicola Coughlin and Luke Newton teased their upcoming on-screen romance at a Valentine’s Day “Bridgerton” fan event in London.
Coughlin plays Lady Penelope in the show while Newton is her longtime crush Colin Bridgerton. After two seasons of meaningful looks and crossed wires, the duo may finally get together in Season 3, which drops on Netflix in two parts later this year (May 16 and June 13).
“It was scary that we were friends to begin with because if you thought about doing that stuff with your friend it’s quite like ‘Ooh,’” Coughlin said of some of their racier scenes. “But then we could talk about it and have a laugh about it and ended up quite fun.”
Newton pointed out that it’s not just Lady P and Colin who are getting hot and bothered in the ‘Ton, as the upscale society in the show is called. “It’s just steamy across the board,...

In the new clip, debuted at a “Bridgerton” fan event in London, U.K. attended by Quinn and executive producer Shonda Rhimes, Lady P. finally confronts Colin about his reluctance to court her. “Because I embarrass you, of course you would never court me,” she tells him, with tears in her eyes.

Exclusive: Another high-profile post-strike TV package has found a buyer. In a competitive situation with multiple bidders, Netflix has nabbed Covers, a drama from Girls creator Lena Dunham, who is set to write, direct and executive produce under her Good Thing Going banner; Drew Comins’ Creative Engine Entertainment (Yellowjackets); and Fifth Season, sources tell Deadline.
No one is commenting but I hear the premium development commitment involves a 20-week writers room to pen an entire season worth of scripts. Staffing is currently underway with an eye toward opening the room in the spring, sources said.
Inspired by real events, Covers poses the question, what if university life – the hard-partying, test-cramming, hookup-regretting reality of a college student – was actually a ruse for a more complex identity, one that no one would suspect – as intelligence officers working covertly for MI6? Or, to put it bluntly, spies.

We know that the upcoming third season of Netflix’s Bridgerton will focus on the love story between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) which has prompted questions about why Benedict (focus of the third book in the series) was skipped.
Per the synopsis, Season 3 — which is based on Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the fourth book in Julia Quinn’s series — finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) as she’s finally given up her crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing him disparage her to his friends last season. Instead, she’s focusing on finding a husband who will respect her independence so she may continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, away from her mother and sisters. Due to her lack of confidence, however, her search doesn’t go so well.

Women in late-Victorian England are expected to wave gently, smile politely, and follow their husband’s orders. They’re not expected to splash around in neighboring lakes, shotgun glasses of champagne or uncross their legs in elaborate ballgowns, like the five American girls in Apple TV+’s The Buccaneers. Audiences will likely compare the 8-episode series to Netflix’s Bridgerton, as the women search for love and high-ranking titles. The trailer alone explodes with royal balls, suffocating corset gowns, and star-crossed romance.

Netflix’s Bridgerton has enjoyed above-average ratings since it premiered on December 25, 2020. With two successful seasons, a prequel spin-off (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story), and a greenlit third and fourth season, Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s most-watched original series. While several historians and scholars have noted numerous historical inadequacies, Bridgerton creator, Chris Van Dusen, has maintained the show’s screenplay is more for entertainment than a history lesson. Much of Bridgerton‘s success has been its ability to raise new and rising stars. For most of Bridgerton‘s top cast, their characters became their career breakthrough roles. Focusing on the cast of...

“Bridgerton” fans are getting a first look at Season 3, released on Saturday during Netflix’s Tudum event.
“Bridgerton” Season 3 picks up with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton’s (Luke Newton) love story. After finally giving up on her long-unrequited feelings for Colin once she heard his snide comments about her, Penelope has decided it’s time to take a husband — preferably one who will provide her with enough independence to continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, far away from her mother and sisters. But her attempts so far haven’t sprouted any fruitful potentials.
Colin, on the other hand, returns for Season 3 with a new swagger about him, but he’s disheartened to find that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him, is giving him the cold shoulder. Dearest Polin fans, you’ll be happy to learn that Netflix has revealed more images of Penelope and Colin’s love story in the upcoming third season of Bridgerton.
Season 3 — which is actually based on Romancing Mister Bridgerton, the fourth book in Julia Quinn’s series — finds Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) as she’s finally given up her crush on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) after hearing him disparage her to his friends last season. Instead, she’s focusing on finding a husband who will respect her independence so she may continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, away from her mother and sisters. Due to her lack of confidence, however, her search doesn’t go so well.
Meanwhile, Colin is back from his summer travels with a new look and major swagger. He is disheartened to learn that Penelope, the one person who always appreciated him as he was, is giving him the cold shoulder.

Netflix’s decision to create an entire prequel about “Bridgerton” breakout Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) may have initially surprised audiences — but the series’ smash-hit success might stir things up as much as its royal protagonist.
In the week since its May 4 premiere, “Queen Charlotte” was watched for 148.28 million hours, becoming the top English-language series on the platform in the U.S. (and entering the top 10 in 91 countries). It scored high with audiences and critics, and the six episodes (including a feature-length finale) were devoured by “Bridgerton” fans around the world, proving the steamy, semi-fictional Regency world to be even more fruitful than expected.
While the initial “Queen Charlotte” announcement surprised many, Netflix made clear from the jump that this was no ordinary spinoff but a top priority, written by “Bridgerton” executive producer Shonda Rhimes. Rhimes’ name is almost inextricable from the televised “Bridgerton” brand, where Chris Van Dusen served as...

“Bridgerton” author Julia Quinn encourages fans to look at the bright side of Benedict’s love story being pushed back for Colin and Penelope’s in the next season.
Season 3 of the Netflix drama series will adapt the fourth book in Quinn’s series, “Romancing Mister Bridgerton” which features Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlin) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) instead of the storyline from the third book, “An Offer from a Gentleman.”
“I think they had just felt they had laid down so much groundwork because we already know Penelope,” Quinn told Business Insider of the shift in narrative.
