Exclusive: After setting up a couple of TV projects with other writers in the first development season of his recently launched Sony Pictures TV-based production company, Easy A and Friends with Benefits director Will Gluck has sold one that he will be writing. The untitled high-concept single-camera comedy landed at ABC with a sizable penalty. Its logline is being kept under wraps but word is that it is about an angel expelled from heaven who is sentenced to live in New York City. UTA-repped Gluck started off as a TV writer, working on such series as Working and Grosse Point and creating 2, Luis and The Loop, before he segued to features. His company is behind 2 other Sony TV-produced comedy projects that sparked heated bidding wars this season, ensemble comedy Walk Of Shame, penned by Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael, which went to ABC, and a mocumentary written by Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons,...

In yet another competitive situation surrounding a comedy pitch this season, ABC has landed a single-camera comedy to be written by Saturday Night Live alumna Casey Wilson and June Diane Raphael and produced by Sony Pictures TV and Will Gluck’s studio-based company. Titled Walk of Shame, the comedy revolves around a group of twentysomething friends in New York and features an opening scene about an embarrassing situation followed by flashbacks of the events that led to it. Wilson, Raphael and Gluck are executive producing. Walk of Shame expands Wilson’s relationship with ABC and Sony TV — she co-stars on the ABC/Sony sophomore comedy Happy Endings. Wilson and Raphael, who met in a clown class at Nyu, are long-time writing and stage partners and best friends. They have performed together at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre and co-wrote the feature Bride Wars. This is the second TV sale under...

Exclusive: After a fierce bidding war between NBC and ABC followed by a lengthy negotiation, NBC has nabbed a mocumentary-style comedy from Mastermind writers Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, Sony Pictures TV and Will Gluck’s Sony-based production company. The project, which received interest from all four major broadcast networks, has been given a pilot production commitment. The untitled project, previously known as The Yard, presents the life lessons of elementary school as seen through the lens of an Office-like documentary. The similarity in style between The Yard and NBC’s The Office made NBC a natural choice for the project from the get-go. This is the second mega deal for Sony TV this week. The studios also scored a script with penalty commitment from Fox for a highly sought-after 1980s comedy from Breaking In co-creator Adam F. Goldberg while also securing the 13-episode second-season pickup of the previously canceled Breaking In.

A new comedy from writers Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons has reportedly sparked a bidding war between the major television networks. Mockumentary series The Yard will focus on the students and teachers at an elementary school, according to Deadline. The project is expected to be bought up by either ABC or NBC, with Fox and CBS having both dropped out after showing some initial interest. Schoolcraft and Simons previously co-wrote superhero comedy film Megamind, which debuted at number one at the Us (more)...

Exclusive: Comedies continue to be white-hot this pitch season. The latest to spark major bidding wars are an 1980s half-hour from Breaking In co-creator Adam F. Goldberg and a mocumentary-style comedy from Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, co-writers of DreamWorks Animation's Megamind. Both projects hail from Sony TV, which has been very aggressive at the onset of this development season, as well as two of the studio's highest-profile pods: Happy Madison (the Goldberg project) and Will Gluck's company (the Schoolcraft/Simons project), which in May signed a two-year development and production deal with Sony for film and TV. Both comedies have received interest from all four major broadcast networks and will likely command series/production commitments. For the Gluck-produced comedy, I hear the field has been narrowed to ABC and NBC, while for the Goldberg project it is still wide open. The Adam Goldberg project is described as an...

The reason: Summit is anxious to get the ball rolling on a new franchise now that 'Twilight' is fading out, and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin's timetable didn't sync up with Summit's desire to move sooner rather than later on the film, which already has a script ready to go. Briefly: The animated Madagascar spin-off movie [1] intended to showcase the four scene-stealing pengiuns from that series now has a director. Simon Smith, who co-directed Bee Movie for Dreamworks, is now set to hold the reins on the film, which was fast-tracked back in March. That was when Megamind writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons were hired to script. The penguins have proven to be one of the most popular aspects of the Mardagascar films and have already been given their own short, and an animated show on Nickelodeon. We still don't have any new info on the story or casting for this one, but with a director in place that should all be announced sooner rather than later. I'm going to lead things off with big news from the Bourne universe. We've reported on the supposed "shortlist" of actors being considered to replace Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy, and Latino Review exclusively revealed that the offer is about to go out to Jeremy Renner (who wasn't even on the the list). This would be just one more notch in the belt of Jeremy Renner, who has secured his current "that guy" status. Already with roles in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Avengers and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (set pics of that one here), we'll be seeing plenty of Renner over the next couple of years. I do think Renner is a good choice, but can he really be considered the "future" of two huge spy franchises at the same time?
It should be noted that shortlist contender Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Sucker Punch) was writer/director Tony Gilroy's first choice,...

The feature script will be written by Megamind writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons. No director is yet attached and the plot of the film is unknown.
The first Madagascar film grossed over $530 million worldwide. The sequel, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa made over $600 million worldwide.
A third Madagascar film is set to be released in June 2012.
The main Madagascar characters are voiced by Hollywood stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and Friends star David Schwimmer while the penguins are voiced by professional voice-over actors.

DreamWorks has two new projects entering its pipeline: a spin-off film based on the penguins from Madagascar, and project focusing on the last days of the last photolab to develop Kodachrome film. [THR]
The studio bought Jonathan Tropper‘s pitch for the Kodachrome project, to be scripted by Tropper based on an article by the New York Times writer A.G. Sulzberger. Kodachrome color reversal film was manufactured for 74 years in a variety of types including 8mm, Super 8, 16mm, 35mm, and large formats for still photography. It was widely admired for its archive quality and was immortalized by Paul Simon in his famous pop song of the same name. (And if you’re not up on your 70′s pop tunes, the song was featured in a montage sequence in The Coneheads movie.)
The Kodachrome project is being developed by 21 Laps Entertainment, whose co-partner Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy may helm the picture.

If you steal enough scenes, you’ll end up becoming the star. That’s the theory at least, and it seems to have worked beautifully for the tuxedo-esque Madagascar comic relief known as Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico – voiced by Tom McGrath, Chris Miller, Christopher Knights, and John Dimaggio respectively. The screenwriters behind Megamind, Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simons are currently working on a feature film to follow-up the success of the characters that’s already spilled over into their own special short and television show. This is actually pretty cool. You’ve got proven characters that are consistently funny, Megamind was on the higher end of children’s flick quality, and with Mr. Popper’s Penquins, it seems like there’s a new trend emerging. Pretty soon Young Adult novels will focus on teenage girls falling irrevocably in love with cold-hearted, way-too-casual penguins. Here’s another opportunity for DreamWorks to prove themselves in a Pixar-dominated world...

No matter how much you love to "move it, move it," you've got to admit: the best part of the Madagascar movies were The Penguins. The military unit has already been spun off into a successful short film, The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper, and a hit TV show on Nickelodeon, "The Penguins of Madagascar," so now it's time for the birds from Antarctica to get their own movie. DreamWorks Animation have hired the writers of Megamind, Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, to write the script.

The four roguish penguins that have been in both Magadascar movies (and will be in the third film, to be released next year) are one of the most popular aspects of that series. They starred in their own spin-off short when the first film hit DVD and have a TV show on Nickleodeon [1]. So, naturally, they're going to get their own movie. THR [2] announces that Megamind writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons are writing the film. We've got no answers to the other burning questions that come up: who'll direct? What's it about? When does it come out? All these things will be decided (or announced) in the future. As DreamWorks animated sequels go, I suppose this one has more appeal than most. Not having seen the animated show, I can't say if the characters will have enough appeal over 90 minutes. They might work better in small, strategically placed doses.

The title of the movie is yet to be revealed but the film will be written by Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons who also wrote Megamind.
The penguins had the best lines in Madagascar for sure, but there's concern that this type of humor would only work in small doses. To take these sideshow characters and make them into the film's main attraction will be a challenge. I'm guessing it could be a lot like the G-Force movie that Disney put out last july 2009 about a couple of militaristic hamsters. ...

In case you didn't get enough of the mischievous Antarctic birds in the Madagascar films, THR reports DreamWorks Animation is putting together a feature film just for the penguins. Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons, the writers who brought Megamind to life, will script the project following the schemes and exploits of Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico (yes, they have names). The characters have easily been the best parts of the Madagascar films and they've already been given a Christmas special in the form of "The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper" and a show on Nickelodeon aptly titled "The Penguins of Madagascar." At this point no director is attached, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone who's been working on the Madagascar films for years steps up to the plate. For now Schoolcraft and Simon are the only ones set to develop the story and write the script, but...

Consider yourself warned: "Justice" could be headed to theaters near you in 2013.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov dropped two major bombshells for DC Comics fans: a new reboot of Batman is in the works, and a "Justice League" movie should (finally) be hitting theaters in 2013. According to him, the new Batman flick would come after "The Dark Knight Rises" hits theaters, and the "Justice League" film is a way to fill the void left when "Harry Potter" ends this summer.
We've got plenty more news for you today, including who's going to play Robert Pattinson's wife in "Cosmopolis," what "I Am Number Four" star might join "Warm Bodies," and all the details about J.J. Abrams' new book project.

It looks like the penquins from the Madagascar franchise will be getting a spinoff from DreamWorks Animation. Madagascar 3 hits theaters this Summer and now the studio has brought Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons (Megamind) on board to provide the screenplay. In addition to their appearance in the three Madagascar films, the penguins have been the subject of both animated shorts and a Nickelodeon TV series.
DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg confirmed that a fourth Madagascar film is already in the planning stages to finish off the series. THR does not know whether this Penguins feature would take the place of that project or if both will be developed concurrently.

"Megamind" scribes Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons have been hired to pen an animated theatrical feature based on the penguins in the "Madagascar" film series says The Hollywood Reporter.
The story will follow the plucky paramilitary Antarctic avians Skipper, Kowalski, Private and Rico. No director or release date has yet been locked but Schoolcraft and Simons will develop the story and write the script.
The characters were spun off in a CGI-animated TV show that began on Nickelodeon last year and is now in its second season.

Chicago – DreamWorks’ “Megamind” features a fantastic voice cast (one of the best of 2010) and will play very well to legions of rugrats over the next few years, but it’s a film that might leave their parents shrugging their shoulders in disappointment. With three of the best animated films ever made hitting theaters last year (“Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “The Illusionist”) along with quality alternatives (“Despicable Me,” “Tangled”), it’s likely that “Megamind” will appropriately get lost in the mix of history when people talk about this era of the medium.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Like “Despicable Me,” the title character in “Megamind” (Will Ferrell) learns that being a bad guy isn’t as much fun as being a good one. It’s interesting that with so many real-life corporate villains, Hollywood is telling stories of powerful men learning lessons about evil. In the case of “Megamind,” as in so many super hero stories,...

The Annie Awards, Animation's Highest Honor, went all the way for DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon!" The fun, animated film, originally received 15 nominations and won 10 trophies including Best Animated Feature.
Given by the International Animated Film Society, the 38th annual Annie Awards was not without controversy. Apparently, Disney and Pixar announced they would no longer participate in the annual awards because of their concerns over how the event is judged.
The studios claimed the Annie Awards have always been slighted towards DreamWorks Animation. And this year, both DreamWorks film ("How to Train Your Dragon") and TV ("Kung Fu Panda Holiday") topped the Annie Awards.
"Dragon," featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, and Craig Ferguson, beat Annie contenders such as Universal's "Despicable Me," Disney's "Tangled," Sony Pictures Classics' "The Illusionist," and Pixar's "Toy Story 3" for best animated feature. With awards season is underway comes the 38th Annual Annie Award nominations, which recognize the year’s best work in animation. Since the creation of the animation-specific Oscar category in 2001, the Annies have predicted the Academy Award winner every year except 2006 and 2008.
Unfortunately, the award has been tainted by controversy after CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg reportedly bought each DreamWorks Animation employee a membership in the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, skewing the voting in the studio’s favor. This likely resulted in a surprise sweep by DreamWorks Animations’ Kung Fu Panda at the Annies in 2008-2009 over Pixar’s eventual Oscar winner, Wall-e.
Disney Studios has since pulled its official support of the event and submissions for the awards, though individual animators are able to submit their films themselves. As a result, the rules were changed for individual achievement categories, but Disney sought a neutral committee of animators from every studio to propose and approve guidelines.

Earlier this year, Disney and Pixar caused a bit of a stir when they decided to withdraw from the Annie Awards [1], in protest over the membership criteria. They had been consistently losing out to DreamWorks films over the past few years, and hinted that it might be related to the fact that DreamWorks gives every single one of their employees a membership card, allowing them to vote. Well, this year's Annie Awards nominees have just been announced, and although both Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get nominated for Best Animated Feature, they have been largely ignored in other categories. So what was the film with the most nominations? Why, How to Train Your Dragon, of course! I don't think many people would disagree that How to Train Your Dragon deserves plenty of recognition, but the fact that it picked up 15 nods while Toy Story 3 had just 3 seems pretty ludicrous.

The International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, announced nominations today for the 38th Annual Annie Awards™ recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation including best animated feature, television production, commercials, short subjects, video games and outstanding individual achievements.
Two years ago, Kung-Fu Panda swept the awards over Wall-e pushing Disney and Pixar to withdraw from the organization and making everyone else wonder if there is any point in caring anymore about the ceremony. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, but DreamWorks (who pretty much run the show) lead the nominees.
According to /film, Disney’s reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization’s very loose membership requirements and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio’s favour. Disney-Pixar president Ed Catmull said earlier this year,
“After more than a year of discussions with the Asifa board,...

The full list of nominations for the 38th Annie Awards were announced today with Dreamworks’s How to Train your Dragon gathering up the majority of nominations including Best Feature, Animation, Character Design and Voice Work for Gerard Butler and Jay Baruchel, as well as Directing nominations for Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois.
Pixar’s Up took home the Best Animated Feature earlier this year at the 2009 awards and when the awards are announced next February Lee Unkrich and his team are up from a number of awards, along with Disney’s Tangled, but the recent decision of Disney to withdraw support for the awards may go some way to explaining the relatively few number of nods.
It has been a great year for animation as the films on the list below attest, and it’s nice to see Sylvain Chomet’s enchanting film The Illusionist scoring a point against the domination of CG here.

Disney has tough competition in the form of itself this year, as “Tangled” and “Toy Story 3″ will compete against one another, along with a host of other fantastic animated films, at the 38th Annual Annie Awards.
The Annie Awards will be a battleground for the upcoming Oscar animation awards. This year, only three animated films will be nominated. Why? Because the rules that govern the Oscars are laughably outmoded. But that’s beside the point.
Fact is, the Annie Awards deserve attention amongst the many other awards shows because so many great animated films were released in 2010, arguably more than traditional films. “Tangled,” “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Despicable Me” and “The Illusionist” will jostle for the Best Animated Feature award.
Here’s a list of all the nominees.

The International Animated Film Society Asifa-Hollywood has announced the nominees for the 38th Annual Annie Awards, and the DreamWorks feature How to Train Your Dragon leads the pack with more than ten nods. But there's a caveat; that and the full list of nominations after the break. This will be the first Annie Awards after Disney and Pixar withdrew from the organization [1] that organizes the awards. Toy Story 3 and Tangled did get Best Picture nominations, and Lee Unkrich was nominated Best Director. But in the feature deaprtment this is DreamWorks' show, with a few nods toward the Warner Bros. film Legend of the Guardians and a scant few other features such as The Illusionist. Disney's reason for withdrawing was rooted in the organization's very loose membership requirements (read: almost non-existent requirements, until recently) and the fact that DreamWorks seemed actively working to stack the deck in the studio's favor.

Megamind
Stars (the voices of): Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill, David Cross | Written by Alan J. Schoolcraft, Brent Simons | Directed by Tom McGrath
Rocketed to earth as a baby, evil blue genius Megamind (Will Ferrell) plots the destruction of his rival, the superhero Metro Man (Brad Pitt) and plans to take over Metro City (mispronounced by our antihero in such a way that it rhymes with ‘monstrosity’). He is aided and abetted by Minion (David Cross), a fish in control of a robotic gorilla body. When Megamind accidently defeats Metro Man, he is free to take over the city, but he quickly becomes bored with success and goes about creating a new hero to fight.
