Prime Video’s new horror/satire/workplace comedy-drama The Consultant is based on the novel of the same name by Bentley Little. It stars Oscar-winning actor Christoph Waltz in the role of Regus Patoff, a mysterious new boss of a video game development company called CompWare. It becomes clear quite quickly that something is very off about the way he runs the firm.
The show has many different mystery and thriller undertones that kept us interested in what was to come next, but the ending of the finale may be hard to understand if you weren’t paying full attention to specific plot points earlier in the season. That’s where we come in! What was the point of Regus’ takeover of CompWare? And what are the fates of the two employees we followed all season, Craig and Elaine (Nat Wolff and Brittany O’Grady)? Let’s find out!

If you currently work from home and have anxiety about going to the office to work, “The Consultant,” a new series on Prime Video, will make you rethink your life choices. Based on the best-selling horror novel by Bentley Little, the eight-episode series stars Christoph Waltz as Regus Patoff, a business consultant with a sadistic method of restructuring businesses.
Created by Tony Basgallop (“Servant”) and executive produced and directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”), the series is more of an interpretation of Little’s book rather than a direct adaptation. As a result, it leans more into sinister themes of the lengths people will go to for money in corporate America.
Waltz’s chilling performance highlights this series as he embodies Patoff, a mild-mannered boss who never raises his voice but can manipulate those around him to do unspeakable things.
On the outside, CompWare is a successful game company in Silicon Valley,...

His first series since Apple TV+’s Servant, Tony Basgallop’s Amazon show The Consultant confirms his place as a writer with no interest in choosing a lane.
Like Servant, The Consultant is a chamber piece of escalating creepiness — part horror, part satire — capable of occasionally getting under your skin and occasionally making you laugh, but never really committing to one tone or narrative hook for very long. And The Consultant is, like Servant, a format-defying half-hour dramedy that, ideally, could have been a feature or possibly even an episode of a suspense anthology; it’s perplexingly rushed at times and oppressively elongated at others.
The hook of The Consultant is sure to be Christoph Waltz, delivering a compulsively watchable performance that falls right into the Oscar winner’s comfort zone of seductive weirdness that is alternately reptilian and lupine. It’s to Waltz’s credit that the sort of...

The Consultant premieres on Prime Video on Friday, February 24.
Based on Bentley Little's book by the same name, The Consultant follows what happens when a consultant is hired to right the corporate ship of a well-respected tech startup.
Tony Basgallop, who is best known to readers as the creator and showrunner for the Apple TV+ series Servant, has worked magic to bring The Consultant to life.
Christoph Waltz stars as the titular character, a man who is what he seems, although seeing what he is takes everyone around him by surprise.
Those familiar with Little's work will recognize the uneasy feeling Regus Patoff brings to the workplace, which has a similar aura to Basgallop's work on Servant. You know something's not quite right, but you don't know what it is.
We had the chance to jump on the phone with Basgallop to talk about the series and his process...

Review: Fans of horror fiction are familiar with author Bentley Little, but mainstream audiences are not. The prolific author has published over twenty-five novels. Only one of his short stories have been adapted on screen (“The Washingtonians” was an episode of the anthology series Masters of Horror). Now, his 2016 novel The Consultant has become a Prime Video series from the creative team of Tony Basgallop (AppleTV+ series Servant) and director Matt Shakman (WandaVision). With Christoph Waltz in the title role, The Consultant is equal parts Severance and The Devil’s Advocate. Prime Video has become one of the more underrated streamers when compared to Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, and its other competitors. While Amazon’s streamer boasts big titles like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and The Boys, it does, however, lack the abundance of content that the other major players in the streaming game possess. Prime Video isn’t lacking in originality, though. When it does release a new series, you can expect it will typically be able to carve out a niche in its genre of choice.
Enter the much-anticipated Christoph Waltz vehicle, The Consultant. Based on the novel by acclaimed horror writer Bentley Little, this eight-episode first season created by Tony Basgallop (Servant) has largely been marketed as a black comedy by Amazon and various media outlets in the months before release. Few actors have become as synonymous with malicious businesspeople as Christoph Waltz. After his Oscar-winning turns in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, Waltz has played dastardly villains of all sorts in everything from James Bond films to the recent small-screen remake of The Most Dangerous Game. In a slightly different role, Waltz portrays a different sort of bad guy in the new Prime Video series The Consultant. Based on the novel by Bentley Little, The Consultant is a series ideally suited for Waltz’s signature style while also blending elements from the other creative members of the team on this project.

Exclusive: Aimee Carrero and Shane Paul McGhie, who had been cast as leads of Prime Video’s college-set spinoff of The Boys, have departed the YA series. Carrero has joined another upcoming Prime Video series, dark comedy The Consultant, as a series regular opposite Christoph Waltz and Nat Wolff. She also has a recurring role in the upcoming Paramount+ limited series The Offer, about the making of The Godfather.
The Boys spinoff, set at America’s only college exclusively for young-adult superheroes, has had a long development history. It’s been in the works at the streamer for about year and a half. The project, originally written by The Boys executive producer Craig Rosenberg, cast its young leads, including Carrero and McGhie, last spring. Several months later, in September 2021, the spinoff received a series greenlight, with Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters coming on board as showrunners.

Exclusive: The White Lotus standout Brittany O’Grady and Nat Wolff (The Fault In Our Stars) are set to star opposite Christoph Waltz in Prime Video’s dark comedy workplace thriller series The Consultant, from Servant creator Tony Basgallop, WandaVision executive producer Matt Shakman, MGM Television and Amazon Studios.
The Consultant explores the sinister relationship between boss and employee, asking how far we will go to get ahead, and to survive. It is inspired by Bentley Little’s 2015 novel, a satire centered on Mr. Patoff, a bow-tie-wearing consultant who comes to the rescue of CompWare after a prominent merger falls through and soon seemingly starts running the company.
Wolff will play Craig, a disillusioned but talented mobile app developer, working for a games studio in Los Angeles. O’Grady plays Elaine, an ambitious assistant to the CEO, who, in the wake of a tragedy, sees an opportunity to accelerate her career.

The term "horror library" conjures certain expectations. If you go to a library, you can assume you'll find more than one specific kind of book. Likewise, a "horror library" is going to be home to more than one kind of horror - you'll have your "Quiet Horror" section, your "Splatterpunk" section, your "Haunted House" section, your "Demonic Possession" section, and so on and so forth. I believe that Cutting Block Press was very intentional in naming their anthology series Horror Library, and editors R.J. Cavender and Boyd E. Harris continue in this, the series' fifth edition, to take an all-inclusive approach in collecting its contents. While readers who are only attracted to certain kinds of horror may find such far-reaching collections a hit-and-miss affair, those who are open to varying approaches to the genre will find plenty worth reading here. Some of the terrible things you'll stumble across here:...

Bentley Little is an author who’s been on my radar for quite some time as someone I “should” be reading, but for whatever reason never got around to. It’s with no small amount of shame that I admit this, as it’s virtually impossible to be unaware of his success in the genre or the admiration he garners from readers and writers alike. I’ve read the occasional short story of his, but had never tackled a full-length novel until now. The Influence, recently released by Cemetery Dance, will always be my first Little novel – but it definitely won’t be my last.
The Influence concerns the small town of Magdalena, an unassuming mix of ranches and farms deep in Arizona. Ross Lowry is a city boy through and through, and as unlikely a prospect to live in a place like Magdalena as you’ll find. However, a...

In December of 1988, Richard Chizmar decided to publish a horror magazine called Cemetery Dance. A few months later, he did. In October of 2013, Chizmar decided to publish an anthology called Turn Down the Lights celebrating the 25th anniversary of the magazine. A couple of months later, he has. Chizmar, clearly, is not the kind of guy to back away from a challenge. It’s that kind of attitude that’s enabled him to build a veritable empire on the foundation of that first issue of Cemetery Dance, and to turn that unlikely name into a recognizable, trustworthy brand. That first issue of Cemetery Dance featured a lot of names new to the horror genre, some of whom would go on to carve out big careers, some of whom would fade into obscurity. There are no obscure names in Turn Down the Lights – this is the cream of the horror crop,...

The tight-knit horror fiction community was left reeling last week by the loss of three gentlemen over a ten-day period; three men who’d served as inspiration, as mentors, as legends, as examples of the best the genre has to offer. They were men who, in their own individual ways, pushed against the boundaries of horror to challenge what it could do and what could be said within its confines.

In his introduction to Psychos: Serial Killers, Depraved Madmen, and the Criminally Insane, the latest short story anthology from Black Dog & Leventhal - who have previously brought us collections entitled Zombies (2009), Werewolves and Shape Shifters (2010), and Demons (2011) - editor John Skipp hits us with the revelation that 'some people kill people', which is not only true, but in terms of this weighty new tome is also something of a gross understatement.
John Skipp, of course, needs no introduction to anybody familiar with horror literature. In collaboration with former partner in crime Craig Spector, Skipp penned half a dozen novels, reworked writer/director Tom Holland's script for the original (and superior in this writer's opinion) Fright Night (1985) movie into a novelization, and wrote the screenplay for A Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (1993). At first glance, I’m hard-pressed to pick a favorite when considering the list of amazing horror authors out there. There are plenty of writers in the fray whose work I’ll anxiously devour whenever a new book hits the shelves: Stephen King, Clive Barker, Bentley Little, Jack Ketchum, Skipp & Spector, Brian Keene, Edward Lee – the list is seriously endless.
Having recently acquired a Kindle, I spent the last seven months filling it with the works of my favorite novelists. In reviewing the virtual library I’ve accumulated, I was surprised to find the results so heavily weighted in one particular writer’s favor. From vampires, ancient evils, a recurring anti-hero and a sprawling menagerie of secret and supernatural histories, there is perhaps no writer as ambitious and fascinating as F. Paul Wilson.
Wilson’s first bestseller was 1981’s World War II horror story, The Keep, a page-turner about German...
