Well this one has been around the block a bit before being dusted down and dressed up with shiny new colouring by the ever inventive lot at Titan Comics (the original books were black and white). They do have an eye for a rough diamond, I’ll give them that!
Ring of Roses originally started life as a 4 part mini-series published by Dark Horse Comics in 1992, then was re-packaged as a trade paperback by Image Comics in 2004. So the question is, is a story already published twice and dating from over twenty years ago originally, worthy of your 2015 hard-earned currency? For me, yes. There are plenty of themes running through the story that not only are still as relevant now as they were back in the early 90′s, but perhaps even more so. Don’t take my word for it,...

Boxing Day sees the release of Guy Ritchie's new interpretation of Sherlock Holmes starring Robert Downey Jr as the detective and Jude Law as sidekick Dr Watson.
Downey Jr was previously seen in the adaptation of Marvel Comics' character Iron Man, and will reprise the role in the sequel out in May.
But, long before Tony Stark donned hi-tech armour to become Iron Man, Sherlock was a pioneer in the superhero genre, says the actor.
He said: "He was, and probably still is, one of the most recognisable icons on Earth, so much so that a lot of people actually thought that Sherlock Holmes was a real person. The more you look into Arthur Conan Doyle's books, the more you see what a rich character Sherlock Holmes is.
"He's very adept at so many things: he plays violin, he's a martial artist, a boxer, an expert single stick...

On a recent edition of TV review show Film 2009, presenter Jonathan Ross bizarrely (and erroneously) bemoaned the lack of superhero films this year.
Well, 2008 may have had two blockbusters in the form of Iron Man and the headline-dominating entity that was The Dark Knight but this year certainly hasn't been devoid of superheroes on the screen or, more broadly, comic book movie adaptations.
We've had Watchmen and Wolverine along with a few other titles derived from lesser-known comics, not to mention several big movies that have also crossed over into the comic book realm through printed prequels and tie-ins.
So, let's take a look at this year's comic book movies - and then you get a chance to vote for the one you thought was the worst of the bunch.

If you've watched the trailers, seen the posters or read the rapidly multiplying coverage, you'll already know that Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes are very different men indeed. There's definitely some core factors that tie them together, of course, such as their almost supernatural powers of observation and, to varying degrees, skill in a fist fight. The conception of this new Holmes started before Robert Downey Jr's casting, even before Ritchie's involvement. Indeed, they were picked to fit. After the break, see some of the concept art that producer-writer Lionel Wigram had comic strip illustrator John Watkiss draw up in order to convince the studio of his approach. Bleeding Cool have pointed out the common misconception that this new Sherlock Holmes was based upon a comic book, and traced the source of that botch up to the existence of this concept art combining with bad journalism.

The film rights for Das Petrou and John Watkiss’ original graphic novel “Ring of Roses” have been picked up by Spice Factory and Persistent Entertainment.
According to Variety, Jason Piette and Michael L. Cowan of Spice Factory and Matthew Rhodes and Aaron Cruze of Persistent are on board to produce the film.
Originally published in 2005 by Image Comics, “Ring of Roses” takes place in an alternate world in which England is ruled by the iron hand of the church. Following the horrific murders of six high-powered priests; an ambitious lawyer and a hardened criminal are tasked to uncover the conspiracy behind the events amidst a lethal outbreak of the bubonic plague.
While “Ring of Roses” is set in a divergent 21st century, it seems to share a few thematic elements with Arvid Nelson and Eric Johnson’s “Rex Mundi,” which also takes place in an alternate history in which the Roman Catholic Church is all-powerful.

One of the major benefits that's come with the huge box office success of movies based on comic books and graphic novels is that it appears that more non-superhero titles are getting developed into film and TV projects. Just such an example was announced today with the news that Das Petrou and John Watkiss's book Ring of Roses has been optioned by Spice Factory and Persistent Entertainment and is being developed into a movie.

Spice Factory and Persistent Entertainment have teamed to develop a big screen version of Image Comics’ graphic novel, Ring of Roses - a thriller set in an alternate London infested with the bubonic plague.
The original tomb was created by Das Petrou and drawn by John Watkiss, the film will be produced by Jason Piette and Michael L. Cowan of Spice Factory and Matthew Rhodes and Aaron Cruze of Persistent.
The 144 page graphic novel centered on a big-shot solicitor and his “criminal acquaintance” who, while investigating the murders of a group of high-powered members of a secretive society, stumble upon a vast criminal conspiracy involving the release of a deadly plague as a cover-up to political assassination and government takeover. Sound good? The comic’s own synopsis sounds even better:
Ring of Roses is set in London in the 21st century, but it’s a London we wouldn’t recognize.
