The Canadian Intl. Documentary Festival, better known as Hot Docs, has revealed its first slate of Special Presentation films for this year’s festival, running April 28 to May 8 in Toronto and streaming online.
World premieres include “The Talented Mr. Rosenberg,” a lurid look into the story of infamous Toronto con man Albert Rosenberg, a.k.a. the Yorkville Swindler; “Million Dollar Pigeons,” a charming introduction to the competitive world of pigeon racing; and “The Quiet Epidemic,” an investigation into Lyme disease dating back to 1975 that reveals why ticks, and the diseases they carry, have been allowed to spread globally.
The Special Presentations will also include the international premieres of “Aftershock,” the story of two bereaved Black fathers seeking justice, legislation and medical accountability in an unspoken U.S. crisis: maternal health care; “The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales,” an exploration by Abigail Disney, Walt Disney’s great-niece, of the...

Phoenix Rising, a new documentary from Oscar nominee Amy Berg centered on actress, activist and domestic abuse survivor Evan Rachel Wood, has been added to the Special Screenings section of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, taking place virtually from January 20-30, along with directors Abigail E. Disney and Kathleen Hughes’ new doc The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales. The news from the Sundance Institute was accompanied by an announcement that single film ticket sales will open on January 13 at 10 a.m. Mt.
Both Phoenix Rising and The American Dream are making their world premieres at Sundance.
The former two-parter produced by Kirsten Sheridan, Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller watches as Wood uses her experience as a survivor of domestic violence to pursue justice, heal generational trauma, and reclaim her story in a culture that instinctively blames women, intimately charting her journey as she moves toward naming her infamous abuser for the first time.

Passion, resolve and canny campaigning are on full show in this energising doc about the landmark 2018 abortion vote
Two years after the UK’s remainer liberals lost the EU referendum, Irish campaigners fighting to repeal the constitution’s eighth amendment forbidding abortion showed them how you win this kind of vote: with real passion, real vision and real determination not to take anything for granted. In 2018, Ireland’s pro-choice voters won the referendum handsomely – 66% on a 64% turnout – an inspiring story told in this spirited documentary by Aideen Kane, Lucy Kennedy and Maeve O’Boyle.

The prestigious Irish film event is poised to launch its 32nd edition (7-12 July), which will be held fully online and will host ten world premieres. Last week, the Galway Film Fleadh (7-12 July) announced the programme for its 2020 edition through a 20-minute live broadcast on its official YouTube channel. For the first time, the historic Irish gathering will take place entirely online, in response to the coronavirus crisis and the unpredictable times we live in. The Fleadh will kick off on 7 July with a digital screening of Aideen Kane, Lucy Kennedy and Maeve Boyle’s much-anticipated documentary The 8th, which focuses on the 2018 referendum on abortion and follows some key pro-choice campaigners and how they enabled the emergence of a more liberal society in Ireland. The New Irish Cinema section includes several first features, such as Philip Doherty’s black comedy Redemption of a Rogue, Phil Sheerin’s horror.
Programme director Will Fitzgerald reveals programme highlights.
Ireland’s Galway Film Fleadh is embracing the disruption of 2020 by aiming to reach as wide an audience as possible with a digital edition taking place online from July 7th – July 12th.
“Going digital was the best option for us,” explains programme director William Fitzgerald. “We didn’t feel doing a socially distant Fleadh would be in fitting with who we are as a festival. When people think of Galway and the Fleadh, they think of the social elements and the meetings.
“Postponement also didn’t seem like an option. Preserving the continuity...

Variety has the exclusive trailer for a new film on Ireland’s abortion rights struggle, executive produced by Abigail Disney.
Set to premiere at the Hot Docs Film Festival this week, “The 8th” tells the story of Ireland’s campaign to remove its constitutional ban on abortion, known as the 8th Amendment, against the backdrop of the conservative country’s transformation into a more liberal, secular society.
Both sides of the abortion debate are represented in “The 8th,” though its primary focus is the female leaders of the pro-choice campaign. In particular, the film follows veteran campaigner Ailbhe Smyth and self-described glitter-activist Andrea Horan as they chart a strategy of grassroots activism.
Directors Lucy Kennedy, Maeve O’Boyle and Aideen Kane said in a statement: “When the government called a referendum to repeal the 8th Amendment, we knew this was one of the most important stories of our generation. Our goal...
