Our House, which is based on the 2010 film Ghost From the Machine, which also screened at Fantasia back in the day, tells the story of Ethan (Thomas Mann), who is left dealing with enormous guilt caring for his younger siblings after his parents are killed in a car accident. Quitting a promising future in technology; by day he juggles the responsibilities of raising two kids; by night, he tinkers in the garage on an invention he hopes will change the world: a machine that can generate wireless electricity. After several attempts with an electro-magnetic device, he finally breaches the wall between the living and the dead. But gets more than he bargained for, however, when the device awakens the dead souls that haunt the house. As Ethan and his...

While I adore escapism horror just as much as the next fan, there’s something to be said for this wave of introspective genre films we’ve been enjoying as of late, with Scott Anthony Burns’ Our House being another strong entry for what’s already been an incredible year of character-based storytelling. Fans may remember Burns’ “Father’s Day” segment from the horror anthology Holidays, and with Our House, his first full-blown feature film endeavor, the up-and-coming director demonstrates a great sense of filmic confidence, and even manages to conjure up a few surprises to boot.
Our House is centered on Ethan (Thomas Mann), a college student working on a breakthrough science project that turns electromagnetic energy into usable electricity—or so he thinks. Ethan’s passion project is put on hold after his parents die suddenly, forcing him to return home to care for his younger siblings, Matt...

Anthony Scott Burns’ Our House is a surprisingly conventional departure from his ultra-haunting Holidays segment “Father’s Day.” As a ghost story? It’s still plenty successful at weighing the heft of post-tragedy grief. But as Burns’ follow-up to a short that builds mystifying dread with a fraction of the production capabilities? This remake of Matt Osterman’s […]

An illustration of how bigger often isn’t better when it comes to remakes, “Our House” applies a coat a professional polish to Matt Osterman’s no-budget 2010 regional indie “Phasma Ex Machina” (aka “Ghost in the Machine”) that wipes the personality clean off this supernatural tale about messing with forces beyond one’s control. The story basics remain, involving a machine that summons spirits both wanted and unwanted to a grieving family. But what this still modest yet considerably slicker upgrade gains in surface gloss and FX, it loses in psychological intensity and suspension of disbelief — qualities the prior film’s hand-made auspices heightened.
In their place, we get what now feels like a very ordinary if competent haunted-horror story about a nuclear family that’s bound to look rather pedestrian in the immediate wake of “Hereditary.” However, there’s reason to suspect first-time feature helmer Anthony Scott Burns and...

Syfy Films will release the science fiction film Hover in Theaters on June 29, 2018 and VOD and Digital HD on July 3, 2018.
Review by Matthew Lowery
There comes a certain expectation when you see “SyFy Films” at the start of a movie. You expect to see a ridiculous movie with bad acting, an almost non-existent plot, and tons of lousy CGI. Essentially, when you think “SyFy”, you think of movies like Sharknado, Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, or any other silly-looking monster movie. But then comes along a movie like Hover, which is actually a bit of a step-up from what one would expect out of SyFy Films. While its story isn’t necessarily original and some of the CGI sticks out like a sore thumb, it is an admirable film full of good intentions and some interesting ideas.
Set in a near future world similar to our own, the movie follows a young woman named Claudia,...

Drones are already a part of every day life; from expensive toys to delivery services, they're cropping up everywhere, including the military but in Hover they are an essential tool for keeping humanity alive.
Written by Cleopatra Coleman (who also stars), this is the latest from Matt Osterman who previously directed Ghost from the Machine and Syfy's 400 Days. In this future, agricultural strain and crop shortages are commonplace and drones are used to maximize landuse and yield.
Coleman and Craig muMs Grant play compassionate care providers. They drive around and assist farmers in ending their lives when they get too sick to go on but at the sudden death of her partner, Coleman starts to think that the drones may be responsible for more suffering.

"Drones - those things are evil." Syfy Films has debuted a new official trailer for an interesting sci-fi film titled Hover, about a drone-filled future where A.I. drones operate as police to manage the few humans left after a deadly, catastrophic drought. Finally, we have the one of the first ever films about evil drones! Well, there's probably been a few others, but now they've made a cheesy Syfy one about bad police drones in a dystopian future. Hover stars Cleopatra Coleman, who also wrote the screenplay, and features Shane Coffey, Craig muMs Grant, Fabianne Therese, Rhoda Griffis, Leo Fitzpatrick, Beth Grant, and Rhonda Johnson Dents. This unfortunately doesn't look that good, surprise surprise from Syfy, but it is still an interesting concept for a film. And they're actually giving it a theatrical release anyway. Take a look. Tagline: "No Exit.' Sci-fi news and review site QuietEarth.us has posted a trailer for Nathaniel Atcheson's Domain. The film is a blend of sci-fi and horror as a virus forces survivors below ground. Except, in a series of bunkers, something even more sinister has been released amongst the inhabitants. Domain is set for a showing at Other Worlds Austin, in early December. As well, an official trailer for the film has been released and film fans can find it here. For more on the story, a virus has wiped out much of humanity. Survivors wait, alone, below ground, in a series of bunkers. The inhabitants communicate through a video intercom-like system. But soon, people begin to crack under the pressure of isolation. The film is slightly reminiscent of others. Though, the tone of Domain is darker than most. Matt Osterman's slightly average 400 Days (2015) dealt with a...

Matt Osterman’s sci-fi thriller starts off promisingly but soon runs out of steam
This low-budget sci-fi thriller starts out semi-promisingly and then runs out of steam, ideas and, seemingly, interest from the film-makers in getting the job done, given its fizzle of an ending.
Four would-be astronauts – Brandon Routh, Dane Cook, Caity Lotz and Ben Feldman – sign up for a private-sector-funded experiment, a sort of hi-tech dress rehearsal, in a fake space ship buried underground to simulate the conditions of deep-space travel. They are warned that there may be surprises in store to test how they handle emergencies. But when the air supply is damaged, is the quartet’s paranoia the result of oxygen deprivation or justified anxiety about who is controlling the experiment and what’s going on?

Being sealed off from society for hundreds of days can cause serious strains on the psyche, as evidenced in SyFy Films' 400 Days. With the new sci-fi thriller hitting theaters and VOD today, we caught up with writer/director Matt Osterman for our latest Q&A feature to discuss Dane Cook's improv on set, the influence of The Twilight Zone, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Matt. When did you first come up with the idea for 400 Days?
Matt Osterman: There was this amazing experiment in Russia a few years back called Mars500, where six astronauts went into a fake spaceship for 520 days (crazy, right?). They had a great online presence (posting videos, photos, etc.) and I was hooked. After the mission was over and they got out with their sanity supposedly still intact, I decided to take that idea and...

In terms of VOD offerings, 2016 is off to a quiet but stellar start as the genre titles arriving in January include a handful of noteworthy indie horror films that should help ease the post-holiday doldrums.
Two movies I enjoyed during the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival—The Abandoned and Intruders—are both making their VOD debuts this month and Synchronicity, the neo-noir sci-fi thriller from Magnet Releasing, also arrives on January 22nd. The animated horror comedy Hell and Back is also coming to VOD this month and the new distro shingle SyFy Films is releasing 400 Days this January as well.
Condemned (Rlj Entertainment) – January 5th

We’ve got a great trailer for an upcoming sci-fi film called 400 Days, which comes from SyFy Films. Even though the movie was made by SyFy, it is getting a theatrical release. I guess the movie turned out a lot better than expected if they are going to be releasing it in theaters.
400 Days comes from writer/director Matt Osterman and it stars Brandon Routh, Dane Cook, Caity Lotz, Ben Feldman, Tom Cavanagh, and Grant Bowler. This is the story description:
400 Days is a psychological sci-fi film centering on four astronauts who are sent on a simulated mission to a distant planet to test the psychological effects of deep space travel. Locked away for 400 days, the crew's mental state begins to deteriorate when they lose all communication with the outside world. "This is some simulation." There's a new trailer for a science fiction film called 400 Days, but it's actually a Syfy Film that is getting a full theatrical release in January. Turned out better than they were hoping, maybe? 400 Days is from writer/director Matt Osterman and is about a "social experiment" where a small crew of astronauts embarks on a deep space mission to another planet where the travel time is 400 days. Essentially, can they live together in isolation in deep space for that long? The feature film stars Brandon Routh and Caity Lotz, Ben Feldman, comedian Dane Cook, Tom Cavanaugh and Grant Bowler. This definitely looks Syfy cheesy at times, and overly horrific by the end, but I'm still curious to check it out. Looking for some less mainstream sci-fi films in the year ahead? Then here's our list of 10 genre movies to look out for in 2015...

Ridley Scott will leave Matt Damon stranded on the red planet in The Martian. Colin Trevorrow will unleash a new breed of dinosaurs in Jurassic World. George Miller will be bringing us his belated Mad Max sequel Fury Road, Neill Blomkamp will show off his robot sci-fi comedy Chappie, and then, of course, there's Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
But what about the smaller genre films, the ones that don't have the marketing budget of, say, Disney's Tomorrowland, or the brand recognition of Star Wars? Those are the kinds of films we're focusing on here: the lower budget,...

The mid-2000s were some pretty damn good years for Dane Cook. In '06, the Comedy Central alum's Retaliation became the bestselling comedy album in 28 years, going platinum; Rolling Stone named him Hot Comic of the Year. Cook was the comic messiah of frat boys. Then in late '07—the same year Cook became the second comedian ever to sell out at Madison Square Garden—the tides began to turn against him, as they often do. Of course, Cook always had detractors—but at some point, the loathing reached critical mass, tipping the scales of public consensus. Dane Cook-fatigue set in.

We’ve learned that production is just now getting underway on 400 Days, a psychological sci-fi thriller that’s being led by Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Dane Cook (Dan In Real Life). Matt Osterman (Ghost From The Machine) penned the script and will also direct. Though 400 Days is a small project, early plot details definitely makes it sound like one worth keeping an eye on.

When Matt Osterman attended the Ifp Narrative Lab a few years ago, his $25,000, science fiction/supernatural thriller, about a grief-stricken man who builds a machine to communicate with the dead, was titled Phasma ex Machina. But when the film was finished and released this summer on DVD and, later, iTunes and Netflix by Screen Media, it went under the less obscure title of Ghost from the Machine. Now, however, another name change is in the works. This August Universal Pictures acquired the remake rights, attaching Gary Shore and Nathan Parker to write and direct. The new film will be called Our House, and I interviewed Osterman about his inspiration for the film, his involvement in the new picture and what advice he would give to other filmmakers contemplating remake deals.

In July of 2010 the Fantasia Festival was proud to host the premiere of Matt Osterman's Phasma Ex Machina. A micro-budget science fiction / horror hybrid, Phasma revolves around a grief stricken engineering student who builds a strange machine in his garage - a machine that softens the barrier between our world and the afterlife. His goal was to bring back the ghosts of his parents and hopefully bring some closure but the result is far larger, the effects of the machine being felt throughout the entire neighborhood with spirits both welcome and not reappearing indiscriminately. It's a quality little film - and one now available on DVD as Ghost From The Machine - and Deadline have broken word that Universal is now backing a...

Deadline reported Universal Pictures acquired the remake rights of independent film “Phasma ex Machina” as a pitch for a horror movie called “Our House.” “Our House” has short film director Gary Shore attached to direct the remake and Nathan Parker (“Blitz,” “Moon”) to write the script. “Phasma ex Machina” was retitled as “Ghost From the Machine” last year when it was acquired by Screen Media and released on DVD and VOD. The Matt Osterman-directed film was about a young man raising his younger brother after a car crash took the lives of their parents. He designs a machine to create a bridge between life and death, but the results proved to be dangerous to himself and everyone else. Universal Pictures has bought the rights to remake Phasma ex Machina, the indie feature directing debut by Matt Osterman. Deadline reports that the studio acquired the project as a pitch for a horror movie called Our House, and that Gary Shore is directing based on a script to be written by Nathan Parker. The project is being produced by John Davis and Nick Spicer of Xyz Films.
Shore and Parkers have a relationship with Universal. They are working on a feature version of Cup of Tears, based on the stylized samurai short film from Shore. The plan is for Shore to hopefully direct Phasma ex Machina, and then follow with an adaptation of the James Patterson book series Maximum Ride, and then helm a feature version of Cup of Tears.
Phasma ex Machina, (retitled Ghost From the Machine) "ponders the grey area between life and death and how science can bridge the two.

Another day, another remake. Deadline is reporting that Universal Pictures has acquired remake rights to Matt Osterman's Phasma Ex Machina, originally titled Ghost from the Machine, a Us short film that was released on DVD just last year. Instead of bringing on Osterman to direct, Universal is putting Gary Shore, an up-and-coming director behind The Cup of Tears (trailer for that), in the director's seat for the remake, along with Nathan Parker to write. If all goes as planned, this will be next for Shore before he moves onto any other projects, including a feature version of Cup of Tears. I've never heard of any of this, what gives? I haven't seen Phasma Ex Machina (or heard of it before today) but here's how Deadline describes it. The film "ponders the grey area between life and death and how science can bridge the two.
