Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity has received criticism after winning Best British Film at the 2014 British Academy Film Awards.
Numerous industry professionals took to Twitter during Sunday's (February 16) ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London to debate whether Gravity can be considered a 'British' film.
Trade publication Variety explained that Gravity does qualify as a British film, posting on its Twitter feed: "Gravity qualifies as a British film for 'significant British creative involvement,' though 12 Years a Slave didn't submit in [the] category."
However, Screen International chief reporter Andreas Wiseman expressed the view that Gravity does not pass BAFTA's 'cultural test'.
He tweeted: "A film needs 16 points in the BFI's 'cultural test' to qualify as #British | Does #Gravity pass? Not by my maths." He then included a link to British Film Institute's 'culture test for a film'.
