There are few cinematic genres that can deliver as much minute-for-minute audience joy as a well-executed dance film. Summit Entertainment’s Step Up franchise has consistently delivered productions that are, at the very least, wildly entertaining. Though 2010′s Step Up 3D struck me as a misfire (let’s be honest here – Rick Malambri may be easy on the eyes, but the boy can’t dance off-camera fast enough), its predecessors were fun, frisky endeavors that sold the dancing, even when their stories were a little weak. I might not be phrasing this correctly. I love Step Up. Unabashedly. It’s my exact brand of popcorn movie; some people like Transformers, I like Step Up. I’m smiling from ear to ear just thinking about this first trailer for the franchise’s fourth film, Step Up Revolution. Plainly – if you like Step Up, you’re going to like this. I will likely love it. Though...

Full disclosure before I begin this review. I'm a fan of dance. Pretty much any type of dance. Line dancing, ball room dancing, salsa, hip-hop, you name the body gyration and I probably like it. So You Think You Can Dance is a staple in my household and Dance Central is the reason I bought a Microsoft Kinect. I Tivo'd the new Paula Abdul dance show, Live To Dance, the other night. I've also enjoyed the previous Step Up films for the very reason they should be enjoyed, The Dancing.
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk Step Up 3, shall we? Obviously, being titled, Step Up 3, it’s the third installment in the Step Up trilogy (and the...

Step Up 3
Let me start off this review by saying fairly that the film “Step Up 3″ is definitely not my cup of tea. But I don’t really think the movie is aimed towards myself, but rather people that are interested and participate in the human ritual of rhythmic motion known as dancing.
Here’s the story: Moose (Adam G. Sevani) & his lifelong best friend Camille (Alyson Stoner) have just started school at Nyu. Moose’s parents are saying goodbye & couldn’t be happier that their son has set aside his foolish desire to dance to instead focus on earning his Engineering degree. No sooner do his parents leave him be does Moose stumble onto an impromptu dance-off. Moose injects himself into the contest & his moves catch the eye of Luke (Rick Malambri), an amateur filmmaker & dancer who heads up The House of Pirates, a local dance squad...

Chicago – “Step Up 3” is not a film so much as a slickly photographed collage of superbly performed dance sequences. Its structure harkens back to the golden age of screen musicals where the plot merely functioned as an intermission between numbers. There’s no need to visit the previous “Step Up” installments before stepping into this one, since their plots are more or less identical.
“SU3” merely aspires to entertain by utilizing the human body as its central special effect. The result is an irresistible burst of spirit-lifting escapism that sends the audience out on a wave of good feeling. Though the film’s acclaimed 3D visuals are available on a separate Blu-Ray edition, the stellar HD picture quality on the 2D version is second to none, while Ken Seng’s cinematography places the performers front and center, providing viewers with what feels like the best seat in the house.

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Gulliver’s Travels – Jack Black, Emily Blunt, Jason Segel
Little Fockers – Ben Stiller, Teri Polo, Robert De Niro
True Grit – Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld
Movie of the Week
True Grit
The Stars: Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Hailee Steinfeld
The Plot: A tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father’s murderer.
The Buzz: This one’s an easy pick for “Movie of the Week,” as for me, Jack Black has worn out his welcome, and any film I’ve ever seen with the word “Focker” in the title was absolutely horrid. Though the Coen Brothers have been hit-and-miss in the last decade, with amazing highs (No Country For Old Men, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) and abysmal lows (Burn After Reading, Intolerable Cruelty), this film, a modern day rehash of the old John Wayne vehicle, looks quite good.

“Maybe we’re all plugged into the same song.” And so starts the deep discussion on dance and life that runs through Step Up 3. I’ll be honest, I’ve never seen the first two Step Up movies. But Step Up 3 was the perfect mindless movie to watch after a long week of work. I snuggled up under the covers, grabbed some snacks, and completely tuned out as I started the movie. While the movie wasn’t actually good, it did make me laugh, probably much more than it was supposed to.
The basic “plot” of the movie is this: On Moose’s first day as an Nyu freshman, he meets Luke, a good-looking orphan boy indie filmmaker on the verge of losing his (not-so-ordinary) home. After a spontaneous dance battle in Washington Square Park, Luke brings Moose to his secret hideout, better known as The Vault. The...

Movie Review: Step Up 3-D; Starring: Rick Malambri, Alyson Stoner, Sharni Vinson and Joe Slaughter; Director: John Chu; Rating: ** – Great moves but poor plot.
September 4, 2010: Pretty-boy Luke (Rick Malambri) leads a dance crew and, as an amateur filmmaker, is quietly working on a documentary about dancers and their craft. He also has a problem: Unless he can raise the cash to make the mortgage payments, his dancers’ commune/rehearsal space will be gone. Enter scrawny yet lovable Moose (Adam G. Sevani, reprising his role from the second “Step Up” movie),.

Film: ‘Step Up 3D’; Director: Jon Chu; Actors: Rick Malambri, Adam G. Sevani, Sharni Vinson, Alysori Stoner; Rating: **1/2
There are movies you watch for the plot. Some you watch for acting. Others you do for their great direction. Keep all those criteria aside. Watch ‘Step Up 3D’ for the only thing it really claims to be decent at – dance.
The setting is now New York where Moose (Adam G. Sevani) from part two goes to study. A dancer, however, cannot really stay away from moving his body at the drop of a beat, can he? Moose finds Luke (Rick Malambri), who runs a house for ‘orphaned’ dancers who call themselves.

Step Up 3DCast: Rick Malambri, Sharni VinsonDirection: Jon ChuRating: **1/2 The second sequel to the popular 2006 teen-oriented musical, Step Up 3D sticks close to the formula. There are no surprises in the story — that's not the point here — the film's whole raison d'etre lies in the pants-popping dance moves. This time around, the spotlight is on a down-on-his-luck hoofer (Malambri) who leads a group of poor New York street kids against international teams in a high-stakes step-dance competition. The foot-stomping guru also secretly yearns to be a documentary filmmaker. But every dream has its hurdles, ...

Who are we to not share a story about a hot young actor taking off his shirt? Unfortunately, the one we have for you today ended in trip to the hospital... Step Up 3D star Rick Malambri tells us he pulled a ligament in his shoulder during filming. How? Well, that's where the shirtless part comes in. "By pulling off a wet T-shirt during one of the routines," Malambri admitted. "I was soaked in sweat from dancing so long. I got one arm out but then I got stuck and there was a pop. I had to go to the emergency room." Has he thought of embellishing the story with some more tough guy-like details? Nah. "I'm not ashamed," Malambri said, laughing....

Step Up 3D is a dance movie with all the right moves. It knows what it is and it doesn't pretend to be anything else. Its plot is skimpy to say the least and its love story is just a contrivance but when you put these together with some hot, energetic dance numbers you have an audience pleaser. The basic plot concerns two dance groups who do battle on the dance floor at the "World Dance Competition." The prize money is over a hundred thousand and Luke (Rick Malambri) needs it to pay off the debt on the loft where his group lives and rehearses. The opposing team is led by Julien (Joe Slaughter) who is as ruthless as they come and he will do anything and everything to defeat Rick. One night a young woman named Natalie (Sharni Vinson) drops into...

I've seen all of the contemporaneity urban dances movies (in fact, I reviewed them all in one fell swoop), and anyone who has ever seen them must understand that it's easy to find a modicum of guilty pleasure in them. It's hard not to marvel at the talent on display in the electric, dazzling dance sequences. Fancy editing or no, it's impressive how these people move and contort and throw their bodies around, and it's difficult not to get swept up in the kinetic energy.
But there's also the flip side to this genre: Terrible, predictable, increasingly inane plots. They've mined all the Karate Kid underdog inspiration out of them, and they've more than thoroughly explored the fish out of the dance floor story lines: There's the poor white kid, the rich white ballet dancer, the black guy trying to make it out of the ghetto, etc. etc. ad infinitum,...

Rick Malambri, Sharni Vinson, Step Up 3-D Inception at No. 2: Box Office At no. 3, behind both the Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg action-comedy The Other Guys and the Christopher Nolan-Leonardo DiCaprio effort Inception, was new entry Step Up 3-D. The Disney / Summit Entertainment co-production directed by Jon Chu, and featuring Rick Malambri and Sharni Vinson grossed an estimated $15.5m at 2,435 sites for an acceptable $6,366 per theater, according to Box Office Mojo. Starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, the original Step Up (2006) pulled in $20.6m on its first weekend. Step Up 2 the Streets (2008) brought in $18.9m. Although Step Up 3-D debuted on Friday with a good $6.6m, it lost 22.7% of its business on Saturday. That’s never a very good sign. (The Other Guys was also off on Saturday, but only by 4.5%.) In other words, Step Up 3-D should be stepping off of the box-office chart’s [...]...

Step Up 3D Directed by: Jon Chu Written by: Amy Andelson & Emily Meyer (screenplay), Duane Adler (characters) Starring: Rick Malambri, Adam G. Sevani, Sharni Vinson I’m still not certain the Step Up films take place in the real world. Dance is so important to the characters that inhabit this plane of reality that I barely recognize it. Is every move a metaphor? “Battling” surely seems a surrogate for a fistfight, while love is manifested with more delicate gymnastics. Context regardless, the seriousness with which they approach their art is unshakable. Conversely, as someone who finds their rhythmic jiving inherently silly — yes, I saw Step Up 3D ironically. My recommendation, however, is anything but. I honestly can’t imagine it disappointing anyone. If you’re a fan (in any capacity) of the previous two films, well, you’re in for a treat. Part three was shot in 3D (as opposed...

Adam McKay‘s action-comedy The Other Guys, starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, took the top spot with a solid $13.2m at 3,651 theaters ($3,615 per theater), according to Box Office Mojo. That means The Other Guys‘ weekend take should hover around $37m-$40m, thus marking a commercial turnaround for both Will Ferrell (following the disastrous Land of the Lost) and Mark Wahlberg (following a series of underperformers such as The Lovely Bones, Max Payne, We Own the Night, and Shooter). New Step Up 3D movie delivered lots of hot dances and ok storyline. Touchstone Pictures released their new dance flick "Step Up 3D" movie into theaters this weekend, and it was pretty fun to watch. It delivered very cool dance moves, along with an adorable duet with Alyson Stoner and Adam Sevani's characters. The movie stars: Adam Sevani, Alyson Stoner, Rick Malambri, Sharni Vinson, Keith "Remedy" Stallworth, Kendra Andrews, Stephen "tWitch" Boss, and Joe Slaughter. "Step Up 3D" revolved around character Luke (Rick Malambri) and his mission to make a bunch of dancer's dreams come true by winning a huge dance championship. However, he's in a bit of a bind as he's late on the payments for the warehouse that they use to practice in. The only way to get the money is to win the world dance championships where the grand prize is $100,000.

The players: Director: Jon Chu, Writers:Amy Andelson, Emily Meyer, Cast: Rick Malambri, Adam G. Sevani, Sharni Vinson, Alyson Stoner
Facts of interest: Chu also helmed "Step Up 2: The Streets."
The plot: A bunch of dancers gear up to beat their rivals at a huge dance competition.
Our thoughts: Let’s face it: nobody really needed another “Step Up” movie. The first one did its job and became popular, and the sequel sucked and quickly started to feel too monotonous. Then the whole 3D thing came along, and someone out there thought it would be awesome to have some talented dancers/bad actors spin some cool moves straight into our faces. Thus, Jon Chu’s “Step Up 3D” was born.

Knight And Day (12A)
(James Mangold, 2010, Us) Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, Peter Sarsgaard. 109 mins
Tropic Thunder proved that Cruise could laugh at himself, but despite a hint of self-parodying craziness here, we're not necessarily laughing with him this time. Never one to pass up an alpha-male role, Cruise plays an indestructible rogue superspy in this Grazia-friendly action comedy, co-opting civilian Diaz into a series of tense situations, most of which we never see them getting out of; he simply drugs her and she wakes up somewhere else when it's all over, in a different set of clothes. Who says romance is dead? He's supposed to be Bourne with a smile but he's more like the Milk Tray man as an international date rapist.
Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky (15)
(Jan Kounen, 2009, Fra) Anna Mouglalis, Mads Mikkelsen, Yelena Morozova. 119 mins
Almost a sequel to Audrey Tautou's Coco Before Chanel, this sketches out...

Especially on film, actions ought to speak louder than words, but time and time again, the dancers of Step Up, Step Up 2: The Streets and now Step Up 3D insist on assuring us that the act of dancing is in their bones, a pure expression of emotion and energy, etc. Unfortunately, that doesn't stop the words in between their actions -- that is to say, the exceedingly melodramatic plot developments that lurch forth in between the often striking dance sequences -- from nearly bringing this second sequel to a grinding halt.
This time around, all the self-serious talk is courtesy of Luke (Rick Malambri), a hard-core dancer and would-be filmmaker whose documentary camera allows everyone in his crew to espouse endlessly on their primal drive to pop and lock before a cheering crowd. He believes that every great dancer is "born from a boombox" (the acronym for this --...

If you've seen any of the Step Up movies, you might expect that Step Up 3D would showcase some great dancing (in 3D!) and also have some semblance of a plot. And it does! But it is carried out in a less than cohesive manner with some very lackluster acting.
The plot, as I understood it, is focused on two guys, "filmmaker" Luke (Rick Malambri) and Nyu freshman Moose (Adam G. Sevani), as well as their respective love interests, Natalie (Sharni Vinson) and Camille (Alyson Stoner, also in the original Step Up). Luke owns a building, left to him by his parents, called The Vault. Here he fosters a dance group and runs a club on the floor below. He is having financial problems (of course) and is in danger of losing his building. He sees Moose dance in the park and invites him to join his dance crew, the Pirates.

Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 6, 2010
Plot: Nyu freshman Moose (Sevani) falls in with Luke (Malambri) and his dance crew in a high stakes underground dance competition. Problems arise for both Moose and Luke as Moose struggles to balance his dancing with his schoolwork and Luke struggles to keep the bank from foreclosing on his studio.

Photo: Touchstone PIctures Step Up 2 the Streets was a dramatic improvement over the dull and lifeless 2006 original. Yet it still feels weird to fully realize how silly this whole franchise is and to still expect Step Up 3D to be better than it actually is. It's not as if Step Up 2 was changing the dramatic face of movies, but it was certainly fun. It had some good music and great dance sequences. Most of all, it had a story (albeit a thin one) that stayed together and didn't bounce around from character to character without any idea where to stop. The same can't be said for the follow-up.
Step Up 3D is a mess of a movie. It's one giant montage with a made up story simply to get you from set piece to set piece. Yet, I had a good time watching it,...
