Iair Said’s “Most People Die On Sundays” and Michael Fetter Nathansky’s “Mannequins” took two prizes each as Daniela Abad Lombana’s “These Were All Fields,” also triumphed Wednesday at San Sebastian Festival’s prize ceremony for winners at its main industry competitions: the Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum and Wip Latin America and Wip Europa pix-in-post showcases.
Also among winners at the Forum were two high-profile Argentine projects, Bárbara Sarasola-Day’s “Little War” and Lucila Mariani’s “The Days Off.”
Meanwhile, Naomi Pacifique’s “After the Night, the Night” headed home home with the trophy at San Sebastián’s development program Ikusmira Berriak, seen as a pivotal young talent residency in Spain.
Said’s second film uses a sweet and sour comedy tone to follow the vicissitudes of a young homosexual Jew when he has to go home to face his father’s last days. Prizes galore go to the winning film,...

Mexico’s Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival, one of the country’s very top pre-pandemic movie events, has cancelled its 2023 12th edition, citing “the lack of the economic support which was vital in prior editions to carry out this important film event.”
In a written statement, the festival organisers thanked “those people, companies and institutions who had confirmed their support and participation in the 2023. We are committed to strengthen our collaboration in the future.”
Based out of Cabo San Lucas, and launched in 2012 as an three-way North American industry bridge between U.S., Canada and Mexico, Los Cabos proved one of the fastest-growing festivals in Latin America, playing off the huge hike in Mexican production levels, Mexico’s first big U.S./Mexico box office hits such as “Instructions Not Included,” which grossed $90.6 million between the two markets; and the enthusiastic support of Canada’s Telefilm and influential industry players...

The Los Cabos International Film Festival kicked off its 2020 edition last Wednesday, November 11th. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the prestigious Mexican festival decided to bet on an entirely virtual format, with no cost. As genre cinema aficionados, we have always paid special attention to the festival's After Dark section. "In After Dark, we congregate extreme narratives and fantasy elements that amaze us", said Los Cabos' artistic director Maru Garzón in an interview with ScreenAnarchy. "We aren't interested in traditional horror, rather in fresh, dynamic and risky efforts, usually made by new auteurs. It's a really successful and popular section", she added. Relic, Get the Hell Out and She Dies Tomorrow are the films from this year's After Dark section. In the galley below...

We are getting close to the much-anticipated eight edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival, to be held from November 13 to 17. Right now, the Mexican festival – which last year screened such great films as Mandy, Lords of Chaos, BlacKkKlansman and Border – is calling for entries for both its Official Selection and its Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund (for projects in development). I spoke recently with Maru Garzón, the festival’s artistic director, who assured Los Cabos is “looking to maintain its profile, regarding the duration [five days] and the curatorial proposal, which has worked quite well.” In that sense, the 2019 Official Selection is divided again in two categories: Competencia Los Cabos and Mexico Primero. The first one is for feature-length productions or...

Mexico City — Launched in 2012, now in its seventh year, and under new directors Alejandra Paulín and Maru Garzón, Los Cabos caters to one of the world’s most exciting two-way streets: the Mexico-u.S. film-tv axis. Add Canada, the third country to supply films, projects, talent and delegates to Los Cabos and the mix is even richer. 10 takes on this year’s edition, which bows Wednesday Nov. 7, running through Nov. 11:
1.Mexico
Five years ago, as Eugenio Derbez’s “Instructions Not Included” finally cracked the U.S. Latino market, grossing $44.5 million plus another $46.1 million in Mexico, companies hauled into Los Cabos to look for new Derbezs. Now there’s another reason: TV. Barring the one-off “Lilyhammer,” Netflix first foreign-language series release anywhere in the world was Mexico’s “Club of Crows,” in August 2015. Amazon is making its first four Latin American series out of Mexico. Multiple other companies – Turner, Mediapro,...

Two of Mexico’s most respected women film executives Alejandra Paulín and Maru Garzón, have been named joint heads of the country’s Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival, one of Latin America’s fastest-growing film events. Paulín will serve as executive director and Garzón as artistic director.
The appointments were announced Thursday by Los Cabos president Eduardo Sánchez Navarro and Alfonso Pasquel, president of Los Cabos Arte y Cultura A.C.
Paulín and Garzón replace Hugo Villa, Los Cabos Festival director at last year’s edition but named in February as director of Mexico’s Unam Filmoteca, a key national cinematheque.
Garzón and Paulín’s new joint leadership recognizes their role in the build of Los Cabos, launched as recently as 2012, as a key – as well as highly enjoyable – event working an ever more dynamic U.S.-Mexico-Canada movie axis. Both already held top jobs at Los Cabos, Garzón as programming director,...
