An upcoming graphic novel from Oregon publisher Dark Horse Comics demonstrates that being a hero is as much about overcoming personal emotional battles as it is about saving the galaxy — although, sometimes, that last one is required, as well.
Earth Boy is the story of Benson, a young boy who’s dreamt for years of becoming a Galactic Ranger, and finally has the opportunity to make those dreams come true — if he can make it through the combination of an unfamiliar, scary new environment and bullies in order to get there.
The middle-grade book is the work of Paul Tobin ...

Cry Havoc #1 (Image): If you’ve ever read a comic by Simon Spurrier, you know basically what to expect: dissection of mythology and its meaning, sharp-tongued British colloqualisms, and a happy dash of absurdity. That said, Cry Havoc is different from his usual fare; it comes off as deadly serious, for one thing, and the jokes cracked are surrounded by intense monologues about the cannibalistic habits of hyenas and pre-emptive strike warfare. Heavy stuff for a werewolf book—except it’s not really a werewolf book in the traditional sense. There are no nighttime killing sprees, and Louise doesn’t wake up every morning with blood under her fingernails. This is partially because the story is told in three separate timelines and with three separate colorists for artist Ryan Kelly, whose attention to detail and paneling style makes Lou’s journey easy to follow despite its narrative complexity. Stick around...

Mystery Girl #1
Story by Paul Tobin
Artwork by Alberto Alburquerque
Colors by Marissa Louise
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Mystery Girl #1 opens with Trine, a young woman with an astounding ability; she readily knows the answers to any question or mystery. The only thing she cannot answer is how she developed her profound power of knowing. Trine uses her special ability to act as a sidewalk detective to her local community. The only real limitation of her all-knowing power is she must be able to speak to her questioner in the flesh. The artwork from Alurquerque does a very serviceable job of helping establish setting and mood. Although the facial expression on characters can come off as a bit stiff. Writer Tobin sets up the mystery at a fair pace, but something seems to be lacking in the aspect of the plot. However, Mystery Girl #1 does hold promise for future excitement.

Kurt Busiek is probably one of the biggest name in American comics. He started off doing freelance work for both DC and Marvel on titles like Iron Man, Avengers, and The Untold Tales of Spider-Man. In 1993, Busiek joined with superstar artist Alex Ross co-created the classic Marvels mini-series that showed the major events of the Marvel Universe from the perspective of photojournalist Phil Sheldon. From there, he created the long-running, award-winning Astro City series. Kurt Busiek is most notable for his humane approach to superheroes, making characters feel relatable despite their fantastical powers. In November 2014, Busiek teamed up rising art star Benjamin Dewey for The Autumnlands, a futuristic fantasy series about a world ruled by magic-using animal people that summon a human super soldier from the past to save the disappearing magic. However get more than they were bargaining for. The series is published by Image comics, and after a...

The first issue, scripted by Paul Tobin and illustrated by Pj Holden, hits comic shops in June with a main cover by Holden that will ship equally with Robertson’s cover. Both feature the series’ main character, Cassandra “Potts” Potter, and a glimpse of the tentacled enemies she faces. “Gunsuits allows me to draw characters and creatures that come very naturally to me, which is what makes monster stories so much fun to create in the first place,” Robertson says.
Darick Robertson is well known in the comic book world for over the top action and Sci-Fi, having co-created the enduring Transmetropolitan (with Warren Ellis), The Boys (with Garth Ennis), and Happy! (with Grant Morrison). Recently he teamed up with filmmaker Adam Egypt Mortimer for Black Mask Studios’ Ballistic.

Famous Monsters‘ new comic book imprint, American Gothic Press, is out the door and hitting the cement with the first issue of Gunsuits, a science fiction epic packed with robots, personality, and—appropriately—giant monsters.
From a script by Eisner winner Paul Tobin (Colder, Prometheus), Gunsuits is a whirlwind ride of mechs, monsters, and alternate universes, adapted from the short story “Wormholes”. The story follows Cassandra “Potts” Potter as she battles gigantic, scaly bio-weapons and simultaneously searches every available dimension for a way to win. “I always try to keep in mind that heroes [like Potts] are regular people,” says Tobin. “They’ve been forced into a situation, but ‘Serve justice!’ isn’t what’s paramount in a hero’s mind. It’s more ‘don’t get shot or eaten’ and ‘don’t let my friends get shot or eaten’.” Both are distinct possibilities in Gunsuits when Potts is introduced to a...

A press release went out this week announcing the new comic book publishing division of Famous Monsters! We are incredibly excited about this development and hope our readers will follow us to the paneled page.
March 3, 2015. Los Angeles, CA: Famous Monsters, the world’s longest-running entertainment fan magazine (est. 1958), announces that in 2015 it will expand its publishing division into original comic books.
Far from being a departure, comics have long been a part of FM’s history. In the 60s and 70s, the magazine shared the Warren imprint alongisde several monumentally influential black and white imprints: Creepy, Eerie, and founding FM Editor Forrest J Ackerman’s very own Vampirella. In recent years, FM has dedicated multiple pages of every issue to articles about current comic book creators and their projects. The comic medium is naturally conducive to Sci-Fi, fantasy, horror, and all the themes that Famous Monsters prides itself in covering.

It’s a bit of a puzzler why I find myself reviewing comics for kids on a website called Destroy The Brain. Not that I’m going to pretend that none of my readers have kids and would be interested in comics for kids. But the weird thing is that I don’t have kids or ever want to have kids. It’s nothing personal, kids. I’m just barely responsible enough to manage my own perpetual catastrophe (aka life) so there’s a snowball’s chance in Hell I’d be capable of doing so for another lifeform, much less want to. But! I do have two nieces and two nephews, the oldest of whom is just the right age to read comics! That said, I’m not actually sure the comics I’ve reviewing are up his alley honestly, as he’s more a superhero fan than anything.

How do you follow up one of the best horror stories of the decade? One might ask Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra, whose Eisner-nominated Colder has been haunting everyone’s dreams. And it looks like the answer would be along these lines: by doing something completely different.
That’s not to say that The Bad Seed is set in a different universe, or about a different set of characters American Horror Story-style—we’re still reading about the inherently likeable Reece and her freezing cold companion, Declan. But the nature of their predicament has fundamentally changed: instead of beating at the door of sanity, they’ve settled into a kind of pseudo-domestic happiness that is about to be threatened by a villain no less unique than the first volume’s Nimble Jack.

The playlist to tonight’s column? Revocation‘s new brutal thrash metal masterpiece “Deathless.” Landing right smack in the middle of October, I have to mention how much energy this record instills in me. The thing about “Deathless” is that it marks an absolute highwater mark for Revocation, nailing the insanely technical flair they were previously known for while stepping up the songwriting a full notch, producing some of their most intense, melodic and catchy work since their inception. This isn’t a review because I’m a casual metal fan and that’s why I mention this album; outside a Dethklok album (or maybe High On Fire), “Deathless” truly embodies the best that modern metal has to offer. Listening to it is akin to snorting a line of demon cocaine off the butt of Satan itself.
So if this week’s column seems a little more aggressive than usual,...

Does Colder really need any more squee from me? Probably not. If you have not yet read this horror masterpiece from Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra, head to your local comic shop right now, or if you must, go here or here, and purchase yourself a copy before indulging in the following preview of the upcoming sequel, The Bad Seed.
And now, without further ado:
And just because, here’s another preview page from later on in the issue. Not for the squeamish!
Aaand one more… because this same team is doing the Prometheus portion of the Prometheus/Aliens/Predator crossover at Dark Horse, and Paul Tobin tweeted this panel from the upcoming Issue #2 today, which is simply delicious.
Sleep? Who needs it? Not us.
Colder: The Bad Seed #1 will be on sale October 22 at your local comic shop. Prometheus #2 is scheduled for October 15. Mark your calendars.

Why, Dark Horse Comics? Why must you insist on being so stubbornly resistant to inevitable shifts in the comic book industry? Let’s talk about how difficult it is to buy a digital book from you. First, instead of opting to sell your books on your own website (like Image) or having them available on the Comixology app (like Idw, Boom! and Dynamite), you have to have your own app. Then you refuse to have in-app payments, shuffling customers to your website and away from the extra app you’ve just connived onto their devices. Finally, your website only accepts credit cards as payment, which in this day and age is absolutely unforgivable. And then you have the gall to make your comics just as expensive as the rest of the industry.
I really hope you’re paying your employees good money.

Juan Ferreyra is one of the best artists working in the comics industry, or anywhere for that matter. I always hesitate to say these things because it turns out there’s someone I’ve missed or forgotten to acknowledge, but the fact of the matter is that I will buy any issue of any comic drawn by Ferreyra, even if the story is tripe, because I just want to stare at the pages. His use of watercolor strokes, emotions in faces, and terrifying tentacle monsters are at equal levels of effectiveness. Now he’s on Prometheus with Paul Tobin (for an interview with both Tobin and Ferreyra, click here), wherein one who claims to be inspired by Giger finally gets to draw Xenomorphs, and the results are fantastic.

It seems highly unlikely that a lot of movie fans are clamoring for another Alien vs. Predator film, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t more stories to tell in what should be one of the coolest crossover universes in the entire world. The newest battle won’t take place on the silver screen, though – it will be waged in the pages of an original comic series from Dark Horse Comics. The company has revealed an official teaser trailer for the September 10 debut of Prometheus: Fire and Stone – an original story that will find Predators and Xenomorphs clashing in the world forged by Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. Colder was one of the best comics of 2013, as well as one of the best horror stories I’ve ever read or witnessed, thanks to its fantastic creative team of Paul Tobin and Juan Ferreyra. Their frequent publisher, Dark Horse Comics, just sent the first preview of its upcoming Prometheus series boasting the same Tobin-Ferreyra matchup, which gives me a fabulous excuse to post this interview I did with them a few weeks back about Prometheus, the Colder sequel, and working together in general. If you are at all invested in the Prometheus/Alien universe, I must insist that you investigate Dark Horse’s massive crossover, Fire And Stone—and the Prometheus title specifically, because well, after Colder, I will follow these two just about anywhere.
Famous Monsters. I don’t know if you guys know how obsessed I am with Colder. I’m pretty sure I stalk both of you on Twitter about it.

Dark Horse Comics has released a trailer for their upcoming graphic novel "Prometheus: Fire and Stone", created by Paul Tobin and artist Juan Ferreyra. The first issue will be released September 10, followed by "Aliens: Fire and Stone", "Avp: Fire and Stone" and "Predator: Fire and Stone" every two weeks. What's it aboutc Well: When the Prometheus never returned from her fateful journey to Lv-223, the questions surrounding the origins of man went unanswered. Now a new team of explorers seeks to uncover the dark mystery that holds not only the fate of the original mission, but possibly their own damnation. By connecting the Alien, Predator, Prometheus and Avp film franchises I'm sure this will give fans a lot to look for in terms of Easter Eggs, but while it ties into the movies, if we ever actually get a Prometheus 2 I don't think we should expect it to address anything that happens here.

That the fictional universes of 20th Century Fox's Aliens, Predator and Prometheus can cross over shouldn't come as a surprise — in addition to the two Avp: Aliens vs. Predator movies, Ridley Scott's Prometheus was explicitly created as a prequel to the original Alien.
