Lisa Joyce has been acting for more than 15 years. However, she was introduced to a new audience when she was cast as Issa’s semi awkward co-worker, Freida, in the HBO show, Insecure. If you’ve ever seen an episode of Insecure that features Lisa Joyce’s character, Freida, you probably couldn’t help but to roll your eyes and laugh. Despite being well-meaning, Freida’s comments are often distasteful and awkward. Although Joyce does a fantastic job portraying the role, her real life self is much more aware. She may not be back for the 4th season of Insecure, but she’s got some

In the first official teaser for the HBO comedy Insecure, we are treated to one of Issa’s (Issa Rae) mirror rap sessions — and it is an utter delight.
Donning a Nina Simone T-shirt, Issa spits some rhymes off the top of her head to her mirror image…or as she likes to call it, her “Mirror Bitch.” It’s a combination of funny and awkward as she tries to build up her confidence, a welcomed staple to the comedy based on her web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.
Her rap session is interrupted by a knock on the bathroom door by Daniel (Y’lan Noel), who she moved in with at the end of season 2. If you remember, the season ended with Issa and Lawrence (Jay Ellis) confronting their breakup which was partly caused by her cheating on him with Daniel. Besides showing us that Issa still hasn’t lost her flow,...

“Westworld,” “Insecure” and “Divorce” will all be back for a sophomore season on HBO.
HBO announced on Monday that all three shows had been renewed. HBO programming president Casey Bloys told IndieWire that all three shows will be back with 10 episodes each, but it’s unclear whether Season 2 of “Westworld” will be ready to return by next fall.
“‘Westworld’ is such a big and ambitious show I’m not sure it will be fall 2017, it could go into 2018,” Bloys said. “We’ll have to see when we get it up and running.”
The pickup comes after creatively solid freshman frames for all three Sunday night series, which received generally strong reviews. “Westworld” is also a solid ratings performer, as its most recent episode attracted 2.7 million viewers in the Live+3 (which includes three days of DVR and VOD usage) ratings.

“How different would my life be if I actually went after what I wanted?” And how many dramedies nowadays are held up by a central character questioning their place in the world when faced with a big life-changing event, or the return of an old flame, or the catapulting success of old friends? I can name three on HBO alone. For the insecure spark of energy holding up HBO’s new comedy Insecure, it’s a little bit of everything, particularly her 29th birthday, which leaves her realizing she has one year to accomplish things that she could have sworn she just had a decade to achieve.
Despite a worn set-up, it’s weirdly effective. Perhaps that’s because of the restrained direction that manages to capture life on the outskirts of Los Angeles – in and out of Inglewood and the surrounding areas – with everyday normalcy,...

Though it hasn't been cancelled, it seems that viewers have seen the last of the Billy & Billie TV show on DirecTV. The satellite television provider recently aired a unique series finale.
Created by Neil Labute, Billy & Billie is a dramedy that revolves around a pair of step-siblings -- Billy (Adam Brody) and Billie (Lisa Joyce) -- as they deal with the consequences of their scandalous romance. The series also stars Jake Lacy, Gia Crovatin, and Phil Burke.
The series premiered in March 2015 and ran for 10 episodes. In December, Labute said that he was hopeful that a second and third season could be made but "it’ll depend on a lot of factors like actors’ availabilities and things like that."

Zoe Kazan has reportedly been drafted in to replace Lisa Joyce in the lead role for Lena Dunham’s new series, Max. The show has secured a pilot for HBO, and the What If actress landed the role after Joyce departed following what Deadline are reporting to be “creative differences” over the future of the protagonist in the series.
Max is being billed as a “raucous” comedy, following enthusiastic magazine writer Maxine Woodruff as she inadvertently finds herself at the centre of an ambitious civil rights movement in the early 1960s. Whether she – or the world around the movement – are quite ready for what follows will form the basis of the early exposure in the pilot, and this certainly sounds like the kind of amusing yet significant shows that a network like HBO will be very keen to get to a full series.

According to Deadline, Zoe Kazan, who you might know from What If, Bored to Death, or Olive Kitteridge (for which she received an Emmy nomination), has taken a starring role in Max, an HBO pilot written by Murray Miller and directed by Lena Dunham, who you definitely know from Girls. Miller, a writer and producer on Girls, also wrote HBO's Andy Samberg-Kit Harington tennis farce 7 Days in Hell, which aired this summer. Max follows the story of a young magazine writer, Maxine Woodruff (Kazan), through her encounters with the rise of second-wave feminism. Think Mad Men, but with more profanity and, probably, less existential despair.Kazan replaced Lisa Joyce in the role after Joyce's other pilot, Insecure, starring Issa Ray and co-starring Joyce, got picked up to series. Kazan also has a co-starring role in David Simon's new HBO pilot about the porn industry in the 1970s,...

Lena Dunham’s “Girls” are taking on the women’s movement. The HBO darling is reteaming with the network for new comedy pilot “Max.” “Orange Is the New Black” CD extraordinaire Jennifer Euston will cast the story centered on a young woman who takes a low-level magazine job only to find herself inadvertently thrust into the heart of the women’s movement. The series has already picked up Lisa Joyce (“Ricki and the Flash”), newcomer Edgar Blackmon, Rebecca Drysdale (“Enough Said”), and a recurring spot for Peter Fonda (“3:10 to Yuma,” “Wild Hogs”). HBO has finally given the green light to Issa Rae (The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl) and her Insecure comedy, according to reports. The 30-minute idea, created by her and Larry Wilmore, received a series order after enjoying a couple years of development and a successful pilot helmed by Melina Matsoukas. The show now examines "the friendship of two modern-day African-American women and their uncomfortable experiences and racy tribulations," and will star Rae alongside Yvonne Orji. Jay Ellis and Lisa Joyce bolster the cast for the show, which looks like it will also tackle the workplace (and lack thereof). THR notes that Prentice Penny will serve as showrunner and will Ep with Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, Jonathan Berry, and Rae. (Wilmore will lend a hand as a consultant.) Maybe it took a bit, but we're glad to see the idea of an Issa Rae Era of TV Domination potentially gaining traction again.

If indeed Girls does end after six seasons, Lena Dunham already has her next move figured out: Variety reports that HBO has ordered a new half-hour pilot from Dunham about second-wave feminism in the 1960s. Max will be a comedy set in the Mad Men era (Mad Max?), except instead of the misogynistic advertising world, its undervalued Peggy-type will be a writer who hopes to rise in the ranks of the misogynistic magazine world while also "stumbling her way into the women’s movement," as one does. Lisa Joyce (Billy & Billie) will star and Dunham along with her Girls cohort — Murray Miller, Jenni Konner, and Ilene Landress —will executive-produce. Dunham, who recently launched the feminist newsletter Lenny with Konner, is also expected to direct the pilot. Your move, Matthew Weiner.

Lena Dunham has been involved in a big way with the f-word today: feminism. It was in her newsletter Lenny that Jennifer Lawrence shared her feelings on the gender wage gap in Hollywood, and now the multi-talented Dunham has a new project coming to HBO, that also has the f-word linked to it, and it arrives perhaps just in time since "Girls" might end after season six.... HBO has ordered up a pilot for the comedy "Max," which Dunham will direct and produce. "Girls" writer and executive producer Murray Miller has penned the debut episode, set in 1963, which will follow a magazine writer who finds herself drawn into the rise of second-wave feminism. That sounds like a pretty great concept, and certainly a different outlook an era than something like the "Mad Men." Lisa Joyce (“Billy & Billie”) will lead the show (if it goes to series), with "Girls" team Jenni Konner...

The Flash and How To Dull It: Demme and Streep Concoct Uneven Rock Cocktail
We’ve known the multifaceted Meryl Streep, amongst her many surprising and highly touted talents, has considerable range and presence as a vocalist. Director Mike Nichols was well aware of this, utilizing her untapped virtue in early titles like Silkwood (1983) and Postcards From the Edge (1990), back when everyone was mainly agog over her filmography of accents. Now, an auteur who has maintained an equally lucrative career of a wide ranging trajectory, returns for his first narrative venture since 2008’s Rachel Getting Married for another bit of familial dysfunction with Ricki and the Flash, a vehicle resting comfortably on the shoulders of Streep’s musical abilities. Considering the performer’s striking ease and expected plausibility as an aged musician still chasing the dream, it is unfortunate the cotton candy concoction surrounding her is so intensely belabored.
