The onus of increasing Asian American representation on the screen isn’t solely on actors. If the parts simply aren’t there, then no amount of preparation can help if an actor can’t even get an audition or see a casting director, which is an issue discussed in Part 1 of IndieWire’s series about Asian American representation on TV.
More roles for Asians can only happen from the ground up. As Hollywood is only beginning to truly understand, diversity happens in front of and behind the camera. Until Hollywood starts seeing Asian actors as actors first and Asians second, that means Asians must step in to call the shots. They must be the producers, the directors, and the writers to create a more inclusive and culturally accurate television landscape.

As their first first viral video attests, Wesley Chan and Philip Wang have made it their life’s mission as filmmakers to prove one thing: Asian men are sexy. With Harry Shum Jr. (“Glee”) as the leading man in their new mini-series, “Single By 30,” the point is moot. In the series, Shum plays Peter, a nice guy living in Los Angeles working for the family business. With his thirtieth birthday approaching, and his parents thirsting for grandkids, Peter decides he needs to step up his dating game. When his party-loving friend Mark (Eric Ochoa) makes a Facebook event for what was supposed to be a quiet celebration, Peter’s high school crush shows up.

The filmmaking team collectively known as Wong Fu Productions has made the romantic drama film Everything Before Us available on Vimeo On Demand.
Everything Before Us follows the stories of two couples who live in a world where all relationships are strictly monitored by a government agency. The strong cast includes Ki Hong Lee (Dong in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) and Randall Park (Kim Jong-un in The Interview).
In order to finance their film, Wong Fu headed to Indiegogo, where they raised more than $358,000 early in 2014. By securing so much money through their fans, they were able to retain complete creative...

Wong Fu Productions has secured a distribution partner for its first feature-length film. The YouTube group, founded in 2003 and comprised of Philip Chang, Wesley Chan, and Ted Fu, will release the movie Everything Before Us exclusively via Vimeo On Demand on June 3, 2015.
Originally premiering at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival on April 23, Everything Before Us is a science fiction romantic drama set in a modern day world not terribly unlike our own, except for the fact a person's romantic history is documented like a credit score. The flick focuses on a couple trying to overcome the inherent drawbacks of the system for individuals who haven't had a lot of luck in love.
Everything Before Us stars Aaron Yoo (The Tomorrow People), Ki Hong Lee (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), Randall Park (The Interview), Brittany Ishibashi (Political Animals), Victoria Park (Raven’s Touch), and Brandon Soo Hoo (Tropic Thunder).

With their powers combined, Wesley Chan, Ted Fu, and Philip Wang are Wong Fu Productions, an American digital filmmaking group that since 2003 has put out high-quality shorts, music videos, vlogs, and no feature films, all of which target a general and Asian American audience that enjoys entertainment and is currently more than 2.4 million YouTube subscribers strong.
Note that part about “no feature films” isn’t for lack of trying. In an effort to explore new mediums and wax creative Wong Fu navigated a moviemaking path back in 2008, but was stopped in its tracks by an entertainment environment that required permission and a target demographic that didn’t align with Chan, Fu, and Wang’s core audience. But in the past five years, that entertainment environment has evolved, permission is no longer necessary, and niche audiences can be good for business.

Wong Fu Productions is making a movie, and it has its supportive fans to thank for the opportunity. The YouTube channel run by Wesley Chan, Ted Fu, and Philip Wang has raised $358,278 on Indiegogo, topping out as one of the most successful film projects on the site. Wong Fu celebrated the completion of its campaign by sending out a grateful tweet to the film's backers: Wong Fu launched its Indiegogo campaign 40 days ago in search of the $200,000 its members needed to create a feature film. The film, which is still nameless, will be set in a dystopian future where each person's relationship history is carefully monitored by a government agency. With funds secured, Wong Fu has moved on to editing the script, casting actors, and scouting locations. By exceeding its goal by more than $150,000, the Wong Fu Indiegogo campaign unlocked three different stretch goals. An extra story set in the...

Project Name: Wong Fu Productions Feature Film Asking For: $200,000 on Indiegogo Amount Raised Thus Far (At Time Of Post): $944 Days Remaining In Campaign (At Time Of Post): 40 Description: For six years, Wesley Chan, Ted Fu, and Philip Wang have been making short films on YouTube under the name Wong Fu Productions. Now, they're trying to use their skills to create a full-length feature film. Wong Fu is behind a new Indiegogo project set in a mildly dystopian world, one in which each individual's relationship history is carefully registered and made available to the public by an agency called the Department of Emotional Integrity. The film explores how this setup influences two couples, one in their teens and another in their mid-twenties. The film doesn't even have a name yet, but it does have concept art, a budget breakdown, and a featurette in which some YouTubers predict what their 'relationship score' would be.
