Even among discriminating Cr readers, there is No doubt that Alien, Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi masterpiece is truly terrifying. According to Variety, a well-received sci-fi short called Rise is now being developed into a feature film. The original was made by David Karlak and starred the late Anton Yelchin, and it centered on a very human-like robot being interrogated by a very jerk-like human being in a world where people are rounding up and executing sentient machines. The imagery is so on the nose that it’s less of an allegory about racism than it is literally about racism, racism allegories being on the nose is probably a good thing these days. Plus, one shot in particular looks like a direct nod to The Animatrix, making this one of the first times in a decade that someone has referenced that spin-off project.

Last year we saw an incredible sci-fi short film starring Anton Yelchin called "Rise." The short came from director David Karlak, and I've got the awesome news that it will be adapted into a feature-length film. "Rise" is definitely one of those rare short films that deserves it.
The story is set in a dystopian future “where man's attempt to create artificial intelligence has spun wildly out of control.” The sentient robots “are targeted for elimination after they develop emotional symmetry to humans and a revolutionary war for their survival begins.”
The script for the film will be co-written by Karlak who will also direct. He will write the film with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who previously worked on the Saw series.
The film will be produced by Johnny Lin, who is working on the upcoming Tom Cruise film American Made, and Brian Oliver, who has worked on films...

"You lost the war before it was even declared, Colonel." This is awesome. While this is a fantastic 5-minute sci-fi short film, it's also an impressive proof-of-concept created by filmmaker David Karlak called Rise made to get his project into development. David sent an email out informing me that he has been working on developing Rise at Warner Bros since 2012 and they just now allowed him to debut this short to the world. The story is about sentient robotic beings created that become more advanced than the human race and end up fighting against human beings. This has outstanding VFX and will definitely get your attention. "Star Trek" actor Anton Yelchin and frequent film baddie Rufus Sewell have lent their talents to "Rise," a five-minute short piece from filmmaker David Karlak which serves as a proof-of-concept work that could be turned into a feature.
The story is set in a near future when sentient robots become more advanced than the human race and end up fighting against them. Karlak has reportedly been working on developing "Rise" at Warner Bros. since 2012 and have only just allowed him to debut this short to the world.
More information on the film itself is up at the official site.

Rarely do we root for the robots when they rise up against humans in the films that deal with that subject matter. But in this sci-fi film, it’s hard not to root for them. The film is called Rise, and it’s set in the near future. Here's the logline: “Sentient robots are targeted for elimination after they develop emotional symmetry to humans and a revolutionary war for their survival begins.”
The short comes from director David Karlak and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Feast). They did a fantastic job with it and it’s a proof of concept that they are hoping to turn into a feature film. It doesn’t hurt that they were able to cast Anton Yelchin and Rufus Sewell in the film and the special effects work is top-notch stuff!

We first heard about director David Karlak's Rise a few years ago when the filmmaker launched a Kickstarter for finishing funds on the short project – an endeavour which was unsurprisingly successful.
Karlak sold the movie to Warner Brothers a few years ago and though movement on the project has been slow, he's continue to plug away at this proof of concept short which makes a great case for a feature length movie. The short stars Anton Yelchin as the face of a robot leading a robot insurgency while Rufus Sewell plays a cop trying to stop the insurgency from happening.

Director David Karlak is on the brink of being the next big deal. Think Neill Blomkamp pre-District 9.
Karlak has been developing a feature length script for Rise at Warner Brothers but the process has been slow so on the side, he's been working on a short version of the Rise film as a way to convince the studio to greenlight the feature. Karlak has relied on friends and favours to independently produce the short and now he needs to raise some funds to complete post-production on the project so he's launched a Kickstarter to raise the remaining $20,000.

Supernatural comic book series "Locke & Key" was being eyed for a TV adaptation, but word from THR indicates the project is now headed to the big screen. Joe Hill — who also happens to be Stephen King's son and just released a new novel, "NOS4A2" — wrote the series, which centers on the Locke children. After their father is brutally murdered, the family moves into their ancestral home, the Keyhouse. They discover the house contains secrets and magical keys that unlock incredible powers.
But there is a dark force lurking there that wants the family to open a door that could destroy everything good in their world. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen will produce the adaptation with Ted Adams, CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, the company behind the comic book. People like Steven Spielberg have been fighting to get the project adapted for the past several years.

Dread Central favorites Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan are one of Hollywood's most prolific writing/filmmaking duos, and neither of them is showing any signs of slowing down. Their next project will be a tale of the supernatural called Outliers. Read on for details.

The pair, best known for writing Saw IV, V, VI and VII, have become a hot commodity among the studios, landing such high-profile gigs as God of War, which Universal Pictures is moving quickly on, and Rise for Warner Bros. as well as a two-month rewrite job on Pacific Rim on set with Guillermo del Toro.
The idea for Outliers, which is dubbed a supernatural action film, came from David Karlak, who is attached to direct. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

Given the success of movies like Paranormal Activity and Insidious, Hollywood is finally catching on to the fact that you don't need a huge budget to make a good movie. Yeah, and the box office dollars don't hurt either!
According to Deadline producers Roy Lee, John Middleton, and Lawrence Grey have partnered in Primal Pictures, a new genre arm of Vertigo Entertainment. The company will share the first look deal that Vertigo has with Warner Bros, and a big part of Primal’s mission is to put the studio into the ultra-low-budget genre game. Primal will also produce a slate of micro-budget films with independent equity financing.
Among the projects you can expect to see from Primal are:

We caught up with horror screenwriter Patrick Melton (the man behind such frightful fare – along with cohort Marcus Dunstan – as the Feast series, Saw IV through 3D and The Collector) last week to chat about The Collection, Black Light, Piranha 3Dd, his new project Rise, and more.
“The Collection is in the final stages of post-production,” said the 36-year-old Illinois transplant of progress on the flick, which he co-wrote with director Marcus Dunstan and which has been snapped up for distribution by Liddell Entertainment, who distributed its predecessor The Collector. “We tested the film about a month or so ago in Chatsworth, California, and it tested wonderfully. Actually, it was the highest testing movie we've written. So we were very pleased with that. As a result the picture is locked, and we're putting on the spit and polish. Charlie Clouser of Saw fame is composing the score as we speak.

When we reported that Paramount was close to picking up the fantasy novel Daughter of Smoke and Bone, it seemed as though they’d be sealing the rights in no time. Even if it was ever-so-briefly mentioned that this was “attracting the attention of a few other studios,” I didn’t think anyone else was snatching it. Paramount was the top bidder, and this business is always controlled by the top bidder.
Well, silly me — we’re now being told by THR that Universal has come in and made Laini Taylor‘s novel their business. A smart move on their part; they’ve yet to get in on the young adult franchise game, and the interest of studios is a sign that there’s something profitable here. Will it be good? People like it, but that doesn’t tell me it’s going to make a quality motion picture. We’ll know in good time.

[1] Last year saw the debut of The Viewfinder List [2], which aims to do for aspiring filmmakers what The Black List does for screenwriters. Compiled from a poll of "studio executives, producers, and creatives," The Viewfinder List reflects the most-liked shorts, commercials, and/or music videos of the year. The inaugural list in 2010 included such up-and-comers as Patrick Jean, whose Pixels is due out in 2013, 47 Ronin director Carl Erik Rinsch, and, um, Alejandro González Iñárritu. This year's list has Dan Trachtenberg's Portal: No Escape on top, along with a few other videos you may recognize if you've been paying attention to /Film for the past year. Or even if you haven't -- that adorable Super Bowl Volkswagen ad with the little Darth Vader kid also made the cut, as did Chris Marrs Piliero's video for The Black Keys. Check out the full 2011 Viewfinder List -- with video! -- after the jump.

Fantastic Fest Announces List Of Short Films which includes must sees ‘Cop Hard’ and ‘Infernal Nuns’
The complete list of short films screening at Fantastic Fest has been announced. Unfortunatly as with most short films, there isn’t too much known about many of these. I know Infernal Nuns recieved a lot of praise from various blogs after it screened at Fantasia and Cop Hard is based on the popular web series, but apart from that, I’m pretty much in the dark. What I do know is that sometimes the short films are more rewarding than some features. Remember folks, some of these directors may go on to do some very big things in the near future, so try and check them out. Here is the press release.

Anybody can tell a good tale, spin a quality yarn so to speak, if given an hour and a half. But to accomplish that same feat in 15 minutes or so, now that's doing something. And Fantastic Fest has announced the lineup of 50 films doing just that for this year's program.
The Fantastic Fest shorts will be presented during the festival, which runs September 22-29 in Austin, Texas. With running times as long as thirty minutes and a short as two, and coming from over a dozen countries, the films look as diverse as they will be entertaining. Take a gander at the huge list complied below, and for those of you lucky enough to be in the great state of Texas during the fest, we envy you.
