After one long viewing and one quick reading, it’s difficult to say if Rajiv Joseph’s “Describe the Night” is a great play or a great big soap opera. Since most theatergoers, including this one, would rather sit through a big soap opera than a great play, especially one that’s three hours with two intermissions, let’s start with the playwright’s flair for soap opera. Without a doubt, Joseph knows how to tell a sprawling, convoluted tale that spans decades in “Describe the Night,” which opened Tuesday at Off Broadway’s Atlantic Theater Company. He also knows...

It’s the fate of any good political satire to go from “funny” to “depressingly prophetic” as the years go on. That adage applies to few films as aptly as Barry Levinson’s Wag The Dog, a movie that launched its tale of manufactured conflicts and presidential sex scandals just a month before Monica Lewinsky became a household American name. Now, HBO has announced plans to cash in on Wag The Dog’s predictive cachet, with Deadline reporting that the network is developing a TV series based on the 1997 film.
Levinson has signed on to work on the project, which will take the original’s cynical worldview—in which Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman spun politics, international warfare, and the all-seeing eye of cable news—and apply it to the worlds of entertainment, big business, and non-profits, as well. Rajiv Joseph’s Guards at the Taj, at the Atlantic, concerns itself with the overwhelming power of beauty; naturally, it is brutal to an almost nauseating degree. Is it unfair to the audience that the first of the play’s five scenes barely hints at the violence? Rather, it begins with the intense inactivity of a man at attention, keeping sentry at dawn; this is Humayun, the more obedient and unimaginative of the two title characters. Babur, the dreamier one, is late for duty. Though they are forbidden to speak, a conversation immediately arises between the old friends once Babur arrives, disheveled and filled with ideas for inventions: a rocket ship he calls an Allah-aero-platforma-al-Agra-Babura, an invisible house, rain seeded with tea. (Humayun’s “inventions” are less practical.) The pair have a captivating Laurel-and-Hardy-meet-Vladimir-and-Estragon rapport, filling the time and outwitting boredom (they are not even allowed to look at what...

Borat director Larry Charles has tapped Nicolas Cage to lead his latest satire, Army of One, which will see the actor play an average Joe who attempts to hunt down Osama Bin Laden on his lonesome.
Loosely inspired on real events, Charles’ latest draws from the story of one Gary Faulkner, a blue-collar construction worker who took it upon himself to assassinate who many considered to be one of the most dangerous men in the world at the time. Such a journey saw Faulkner attempt to sneak into Afghanistan and Pakistan on multiple occasions, armed with only a sword to stop the al-Qaeda leader in his tracks before his ultimate demise at the hand of the Us army in May of 2011.
On paper, it’s a bonkers premise that could just work thanks to the touch of Charles. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Army of One will retain the semi-improvised...

Silver Linings Playbook star Bradley Cooper to star in Hollywood version of German box-office hit, with a view to directing
Bradley Cooper could become the latest actor to go behind the cameras after signing on to star in and potentially direct a Warner Bros remake of the German blockbuster Kokowääh.
The original film starred actor-director Til Schweiger with his real-life daughter Emma Tiger Schweiger and was Germany's biggest movie of 2011 at the box office. It centres on a carefree bachelor who discovers that his friend's daughter may be his own biological child, resulting from a one-night stand eight years previously. The film's title derives from a poor pronunciation of "coq au vin" by a German speaker.

The scripts are not only flying off those proverbial Hollywood shelves, but have also sealed deals at studios and, in one case, secured a name director. The first instance concerns Draft Day, an NFL-centered comedy that Paramount have bought for Ivan Reitman to helm and, through his Montecito Pictures, produce. Written by Scott Rothman and acclaimed playwright Rajiv Joseph, Day spans one of the most important and stressful 24 hours of the profession’s calendar year, following the Buffalo Bills’ Gm as he “frantically [tries] to get the number one pick for his struggling team.” [Deadline]
Interesting stuff, if only because we rarely get a sports comedy that — well, we rarely get sports comedies in general nowadays — plays with any conventions of narrative or, possibly in this case, general filmmaking. And while, yes, I know Reitman‘s “recent” work is either muted (No Strings Attached) or outright terrible (My Super Ex-Girlfriend), it’s...

Ivan Reitman is responsible for directing some of the greatest comedies of all time, from Ghostbusters to Stripes to Dave, but in recent years he has lost his touch a little. Both of his last two films, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and No Strings Attached were dreadful and its hard to come up with a lot of positive adjectives for the two that preceded those, Evolution and Six Days, Seven Nights (not to mention clunkers like Father's Day and Junior). The slide has lasted so long that it's hard not to wonder if he will ever get back to greatness, but he keeps plugging away and now the 65-year-old filmmaker has attached himself to a brand new project. Deadline reports that Reitman is now attached to direct Draft Day, a new football comedy based on a spec script from Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman. Mark Rylance's 'Rooster' Byron is just one of the Britons wowing New York in Broadway shows this spring
It's spring on Broadway, and that can only mean two things, both of them time-honoured: there are lots of shows opening, and quite a few are either British titles (Arcadia, War Horse, Jerusalem) or give pride of place to Brits. What's new, you might ask? Well, Daniel Radcliffe in a musical, for one thing, since the diminutive wizard has never previously given much indication that he's got rhythm.
Yet here he is in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (Al Hirschfeld theatre), the 1961 Frank Loesser musical about a window-washer's ascent up the corporate ladder, proving that the Hogwarts alumnus is a genuine hoofer, too. Radcliffe's nomination last week for an Astaire award – given each season to the best dancers on Broadway – must surely represent the young superstar's least anticipated accolade to date.

Pablo Schreiber admits frankly that because he has played wonderfully complex and challenging characters on stage, his expectations for future work have risen. "Now when I look at stage material, it has to provide me with more than the last theater project." Consider the daunting parts he has tackled: the emotionally anguished Ralph in Clifford Odets' "Awake and Sing"; the impassioned Eben who's in love with his stepmom in Eugene O'Neill's "Desire Under the Elms"; and simultaneously similar and different twins brothers in Christopher Shinn's "Dying City." Schreiber is flexing his acting muscles once again, taking on the mentally twisted and accident-prone Doug in Rajiv Joseph's two-hander, "Gruesome Playground Injuries," running Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre. It tells the story of two lost souls—Doug and Kayleen (Jennifer Carpenter)—who come in and out of each other's orbits over 30 years."The most glaringly obvious challenge in playing...
