Hellmouth Clip and Poster. Stephen McHattie‘s Hellmouth (2015) movie clip (1min and 29sec) and poster have been released.
This clip immediately reminds of the innovative way that Robert Rodriguez blended live-action with animated CG backdrops. Not only is it efficient and cost-effective to work this way, but in both cases it creates a surreal, dreamlike effect that lets the viewer know they’re in for a stylized genre movie. The rules of this film may not be the same as they are for others.
In this case, Stephen McHattie has seemingly created a very interesting palette and sense of immersion. I’m sold, on the visuals, at least. I want to explore more of this world, drive around more and see other parts of town. This strongly reminds me of the style of old Under The Killing Moon point-and-click detective games, or even the Blade Runner PC game.

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Anchor Bay Entertainment and Absolute Underground Magazine. Director: John Geddes. Writer: Tony Burgess. Cast: Stephen McHattie, Siobhan Murphy, Ari Millen and Tony Burgess. Writer Tony Burgess (Pontypool) and actor Stephen McHattie reteam for another horror title, Hellmouth. Part hellscape, the film develops much like a nightmare, in which nothing is real. Even the plot dissolves at certain key points. Meanwhile, the CGI visual field is full of demons, an angel and even a Sauron-like antagonist. None of these characters come together in a compelling fashion, with the film struggling to define itself. Possibly meant as an opium dream only, Hellmouth forgets that storytelling is longer lasting than any series of barely connected fantasy sequences. The plot, such as it, begins with Charlie Baker (McHattie). He is a gravedigger, with only a couple of years to live. He has a "brain rattle,...

Hellmouth is the new one from Exit Humanity director, John Geddes. And writer of Pontypool, Tony Burgess. Hellmouth is a neo-noir horror tale, created with the usage of contrasting colors and other such visual techniques. Some would say that this is in the style of Sin City, which is helped along by the fact that the first third of the film is black and white, with a few traces of color. Personally, I would compare it to Dark Country before Sin City, but I’m one of only 5 people that bothered to see that nice little piece of horror-pulp starring Thomas Jane, so Sin City is probably a more accessible approach to explaining the style to expect. What I’m saying is, a lot of detail is focused on creating the visual style of the world, and it makes for a stunning experience. There are a few frightening scenes along the way.

Friday was Day Two of Toronto After Dark 2014, and the theater was packed for both of the evenings screenings. Hellmouth had its World Premiere, ABCs Of Death 2 had its Toronto Premiere, and the sold out crowds were cheering and ready for both movies. It’s kind of a big deal that both of these screenings sold out, as that means that the first four consecutive films at this year’s festival were completely full. I believe that is a new Tadff record. The festival certainly has grown over the last 8 years, and it’s exciting to watch as more and more films sell out with each iteration.
The night kicked off with Pupa, an anime-style animated mindfuck of a short film that was both entertaining and bizarre. It certainly was a great match for Hellmouth, which is about as Wtf-inducing as they come (more on that in minute), so...

Ubiquitous character actor Stephen McHattie is always a pleasure to see up on the big screen. From supporting roles in Hollywood films like The Fountain, Watchmen and A History of Violence, to central performances in indie Canadian productions like the criminally underrated Pontypool, and now John Geddes' Hellmouth. At 67, there are entire lifetimes written on his face, even as the rest of him remains lean and spry. McHattie is a conundrum, seemingly young and ancient at the same time, and is perfect here as the reluctant Charlie Baker, caretaker of his own personal abyss. Given more than three quarters of the script to himself in the film, his quivering yet authoritative gravelly voice is beyond reproach. If all of the artifice in the green...

I’m swamped with life, and movies/TV that I Have to watch, so my recreational October horror movie consumption is taking a hit. Slow week, for me. Oh, well, soon Exhumed Films 24 Hour Horror-Thon will be upon us, and I will be inside of a theater with movies on-film playing continuously for 24 straight hours. That should even me out. We have a mixed bag this week, including the new episode of The Walking Dead, which I am told is being counted.
The Walking Dead – Season 5, episode 1 “No Sanctuary” Sunday, October 12th – 66 minutes – 2 pts
Love it or hate it, The Walking Dead is here to stay. I’m one of the ones that love it, and this episode was one of the best of the entire series. Tons of action, and formerly-weak characters being total badasses. They didn’t meander, or spend an entire season setting up how the group would escape Terminus.

As we mourn the loss of summer, once the dust has settled here in Toronto in a couple of weeks time, all eyes turn to the Toronto After Dark Film Festival in October. Toronto After Dark is one of our city's premiere purveyors of weird, wonderful and fantastic cinema each year and will be celebrating its ninth edition with style. First and foremost, the festival is proud to host the World Premiere of After Dark alumnus John Geddes' Hellmouth. Severed fingers crossed the Exit Humanity director will bring along Hellmouth writer Tony Burgess (Pontypool, Septic Man and Ejecta) for another rousing Q&A session. There will be time for a grammar lesson in death with the Canadian premiere of ABCs of Death 2. I see no reason why local...

The trailer for John Geddes' Hellmouth made its debut via Twitch this morning and I can honestly say I did not anticipate it having such an FX-heavy, '50-inspired vibe.
A nod to classic horror and fantasy, the film stars Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, Haunter) as Charlie Baker, a dying grave keeper who's forced to take one final job. Baker goes on a dark descent through gothic landscapes, demonic worlds and medieval realms as he journeys to discover the secret behind a mysterious cemetery.

In the new Canadian horror movie Septic Man, Jason David Brown plays a sewage worker who falls into a septic tank and gradually mutates into a monstrous beastie. Brown won Best Actor in a Horror Film award at last year’s Fantastic Fest genre festival for his performance—but this gross-out film is not one to watch while you’re eating. Then again…
“At Fantastic Fest they actually handed out chocolate pudding in the middle of the screening,” recalls Septic Man director Jesse Thomas Cook. “It was a funny touch to see people eating chocolate pudding while Septic Man was knee-deep in the sewage.

The words written by Tony Burgess sound awfully good coming out of the mouth of Stephen McHattie, or so seems to be the general consensus among those who have seen Bruce McDonald directed zombie film Pontypool. Exit Humanity
Stars: Dee Wallace, Brian Cox, Bill Moseley, Stephen McHattie, Mark Gibson, Jordan Hayes, Adam Seybold | Written and Directed by John Geddes
The zombie film seems easy sometimes. Just pick a setting stuff the undead in it and make the human characters shoot them to survive. It’s easy, and it makes money. Problem is sometimes the makers of such films forget to make them good. A good example of this would be the latest batch of historical zombie films, because we all know it’s popular to stick zombies with cowboys right? Exit Humanity is one of the latest films to try it’s luck with this strange combination.
As the civil war is coming to an end a new enemy starts to appear, the zombies. There are plenty of dead to start an apocalypse and pretty soon the American wilderness is full of the rotting walking corpses.

Dark Horse (15)
(Todd Solondz, 2011, Us) Selma Blair, Jordan Gelber, Christopher Walken, Mia Farrow, Justin Bartha, Zachary Booth. 86 mins
Trust Todd Solondz to give us the flipside of movie man-childhood. There's nothing funny or adorable about 35-year-old Abe (Gelber), who lives with his parents, collects action figures and has no idea of his own uselessness. He meets his match (sort of) in the virtually comatose Blair, and what ensues is a romcom that's neither romantic nor comical, but beneath the misanthropy lurks some kind of compassion.
Killer Joe (18)

Director/writer: John Geddes. Cast: Mark Gibson, Jordan Hayes, Stephen McHattie, Bill Moseley, Brian Cox, and Dee Wallace. The Civil War is over, and for Edward Young (Mark Gibson), a soldier who's survived the worst of what mankind can do to one another—to kill a fellow man—he will soon face a new terror in Exit Humanity. Viewers are being taken through his journey by flipping through the pages of a book, and this technique is a good one to establish each chapter of Young’s life. When the tale begins, six years have passed since the end of that war, and the hero has moved on to forge a new life. Sadly, he is still haunted by his wartime memories of fighting the living dead. It seems the Confederates have found a way to turn the tide, and fortunately history as we know it survived intact. But when...

Those thinking that every imaginable scenario for a zombie film had been exhausted should think again, for Exit Humanity, though an inextricably uneven feat of filmmaking, at least gets a few points for originality. Set in the late 19th century after the end of the American Civil War, it feels in many ways like the more tasteful little brother of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, sending world history on a collision course with the fantastical.
Framed by a procedural “tell us a story” layout, Brian Cox narrates from a survival tome written by protagonist Edward Young (Mark Gibson), after a zombie breakout took place in the 1860s. With his wife dead, Young goes searching for his son, but when he discovers that he too has succumbed to the infection, Young is forced to do something that will change him forever.

Dee Wallace is one of the genre's premier Scream Queens and always adds a level of grace to any project she's in. From performances in films like The Hills Have Eyes, The Howling, E.T., Cujo, and The Frighteners, Wallace has always brought a deeper level to any character she's given.
This makes her one of the elite actresses of her or any other generation.
Wallace appears in the recent independent zombie flick Exit Humanity written and directed by John Geddes, which explores the world of post-Civil War America and just how bad things could get if zombie were running amok. The iconic actress co-stars in the film alongside Bill Moseley, Mark Gibson, Stephen McHattie, Jordan Hayes and Brian Cox.

Remember when you were a kid and you would dream of your favorite monsters battling each other? You would sit in school daydreaming about what it would be like to see Frankenstein's Monster battle the Werewolf or the Mummy get into hand-to-hand combat with the Creature from the Black Lagoon. This is something you no longer have to imagine. Thanks to Image Entertainment, Monster Brawl takes those very childhood fantasies and puts them on screen.
The movie is simple to describe. You take all your favorite horror movie creatures and throw them in a wrestling ring to battle it out with each other to the death. Throw in some intro sequences to give each monster's backstory and some emcees dishing witty retorts back and forth and you've got a film that should satisfy both horror fans and wrestling fans.
If you watch professional wrestling, you know exactly what to expect from this film.

Zombies, man. They're everywhere, exterminating the human race bite by bite. It's only a matter of time before the dead outnumber the living, and judging by how badly we've already screwed up this planet, maybe they deserve a shot.

Horror has been in Canada's snow for decades now, starting with the classic Cannibal Girls and Black Christmasin the early '70s, through the classic early Cronenberg years of Shivers, Rabid and The Brood in the late '70s. In the '80s, we got films like Prom Night, My Bloody Valentine and The Gate. In the past decade, we've had flicks like the Ginger Snaps series, Cube and PontyPool. In fact, you could even count the last three Dead movies by George A. Romero as Canadian — after all, he is a Canadian citizen now and made all three films in Toronto.

“Exit Humanity” isn’t the first Cowboys and Zombies movies, of course, but this might be the first one that took the subject seriously. Or as seriously as you can take it when you’ve got cowboys with six-shooters battling the undead, I guess. John Geddes’ film looks promising enough, though, and it arrives on DVD and Video on Demand this June 19th, 2012 courtesy of Bloody Disgusting Selects. Check out a new trailer (below) and DVD cover art (to your left) for the film. In the aftermath of the Civil War an unexplained outbreak of the walking dead claims the life of Edward Young’s wife while his son disappears. This sets him off on a harrowing journey into the plagued countryside. Facing off challenges not just from the ferocious undead but also from the living, will Edward find an exit to the grotesque caricature of what humanity has become?...

There are some ideas it's hard to see how people could possibly screw up. Take horror (as in the supernatural) in the middle of a war zone. You've got potentially limitless subtext, the nightmares soldiers and civilians go through literally brought to life, and yet John Geddes' Exit Humanity fails to wring a single minute of drama out of any of it, let alone actual scares. With a Confederate soldier Edward Young (Mark Gibson) struggling to survive as the living dead crop up in the middle of the American Civil War, his family devoured and the natural order collapsing Geddes seems to want his story to say something, but he can barely even manage 'Man is the real monster', let alone 'Oh, the humanity'. Technically...

Bloody Disgusting is pleased to announce the North American acquisition of John Geddes' post-apocalyptic Exit Humanity for DVD and VOD release as part of its Bloody Disgusting Selects film series. It portrays a young man's struggle to survive in the aftermath of an undead outbreak during the American Civil War. Heavily inspired by classic films such as Jeremiah Johnson and The Outlaw Josey Wales, Exit Humanity is a poetic tale told through the journal entries of its protagonist Edward Young. The Canadian feature blends live-action and animation to explore deeper themes of fear, hope, redemption, and evil. Starring horror icons Bill Moseley (Devils Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses), Dee Wallace (E.T., Cujo), Stephen McHattie (Pontypool, The Watchmen, 300), and new horror hero Mark Gibson, Exit Humanity is a zombie saga that tells the tale of the ultimate battle of good vs. evil.

After six years, Toronto After Dark is bigger than ever. The films are better, the lines are longer and the fan-frenzy is wilder. This year’s chilling selection included: civil war zombies, creepy abductors, cliff-hanging killers, post-apocalyptic insanity and suburban hell – a sci-fi horror fan’s paradise.
Writer-director John Geddes’ Exit Humanity is a post-civil war zombie epic set in 1870’sTennessee. When his wife and son fall victim to the undead, Edward Young (Mark Gibson in a breakout performance) flees across the countryside for survival, but zombies are the least of his worries after he’s captured by a band of ruthless Confederate soldiers who are obsessed with conducting medical experiments. Geddes‘ concept of zombies in the old west is a fresh perspective on the popular genre. The film’s use of animation (a budgetary decision) advances the action excellently and the beautiful cinematography makes this a great-looking period movie.
