Back in 2017 audiences, I’m sure, didn’t expect much of a Jumanji sequel-come-reboot but that film turned out to be something of a mega-hit, hitting all the right notes while not retreading the same ground as the original 1995 film. Skip forward to 2019 and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle gets its own sequel and one that could have been a complete retread of events of the prior film but thankfully throws in enough curve balls to the story to make this both familiar, in terms of plotting, characterisation, etc. yet different enough to be another beguilingly brilliant entry in the franchise. Sony Pictures’ sequel “Jumanji: The Next Level” has crossed the $300 million box office milestone 63 days after it opened in North America.
The film opened in first place at the box office with $60.1 million over the Dec. 13-15 weekend, beating “Frozen 2,” the box office champ of the previous three weeks.
Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart’s pic set several milestones, like the all-time highest opening for a comedy in the month of December and Sony Pictures’ best opening weekend record in that same month. It was also the two stars’ biggest live-action opening weekend and the highest opening weekend of director Jake Kasdan’s career.
“Jumanji: The Next Level” opened two years after “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” with Hart, Johnson, Jack Black and Karen Gillan reprising their roles. The four teens from the first film also returned, while Awkwafina, Danny DeVito and Danny Glover joined the cast.

Exclusive: Sony/Seven Bucks/Matt Tolmach Productions’ Jumanji: The Next Level is closing in on its predecessor, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle. With a $548.8M worldwide gross through January 2, the Dwayne Johnson-starrer now counts $209.7M domestic and $339.1M from the international box office. Comparatively at the same time in release, Next Level is slightly ahead (+3%) of the previous installment overseas and when excluding China. Including the Middle Kingdom, the latest Jake Kasdan-directed adventure is down by about 5%.
The film came on strong last weekend with just a 1% overseas drop and following muscular mid-week business in the Christmas corridor. Along with Disney/Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker ($423M international/$840M global through Thursday), it remains a Top 2 choice in most key markets and is still to roll into Brazil later this month.

The $962 million worldwide box office for 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was, if not surprising, at least more than seemed to be expected ahead of release. Now Sony is hoping lightning strikes twice as it puts Jumanji: The Next Level in theaters.
Like the first movie, the sequel’s story features individuals being sucked into a video game, taking on the looks and abilities of the game’s characters. This time around, Spencer (Alex Wolff) has gone missing in the game, leading his friends, Bethany (Madison Iseman), Martha (Morgan Turner) and Anthony (Ser'Darius Blain), to go find him....

Jumanji is back with a new Dlc, which in itself is odd because it’s a cartridge-based video game, where our heroes once again need to save the land of Jumanji from a new villainous boss, Jurgen The Brutal. Spencer (Alex Wolff), Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), Martha (Morgan Turner), & Bethany (Madison Iseman) return to once again face the many challenges contained within the mystical game of Jumanji.

So what’s a favorite gift that’s usually under the Christmas tree, usually straight from the North Pole? Aside from the dolls (and action figures), craft sets, and sports equipment. a staple would be a game, more specifically a board game. That was the thinking of the celebrated author of children’s’ books, Chris Van Allsburg, when he came up with the beloved “kid lit’ classic that was made into an even more beloved 1995 fantasy adventure flick, Jumanji. Twenty-two years later “reboot fever'”struck Sony/Columbia Studios (along with most of Hollywood), so they decided to do an upgrade. First, they tossed out the dice, spinners, and all the board game fixtures and opted to go high tech (somewhat) and make it a video game. Mind you, it was somewhat “old school” with a cartridge, console, and joysticks, rather than the computer and internet systems. Oh, and instead of things escaping from the game,...

1995’s Jumanji is one of the late Robin Williams’ most beloved films, so it was a tall ask to reboot the franchise. Against all the odds, though, 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle totally succeeded, with this weekend seeing the release of a third film in the series, The Next Level. We’ve yet to see how it’ll go down, of course, but Sony apparently has enough faith in it to already start work on a fourth movie.
That’s right, according to our sources – the same ones who said Ace Ventura 3 is in development, which has since been corroborated, and that a new Scream movie is happening, which has now been confirmed – the studio is planning on making Jumanji 4, with a plot already mapped out for it. No sense putting the knock on this sequel to 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which blew the cobwebs off the 1995 version starring Robin Williams. The reboot cast, again headed by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and the devilish Jack Black, are still fun company — The attitude of The Next Level, spearheaded by returning director Jake Kasdan and screenwriters Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, is that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

It’s a concept as strange as it was inevitable: a big-budget reboot of a beloved kids’ film that centered on the lo-fi charms (and unexpected terror) of a whimsical board game with a mind of its own. When Sony opted to craft a new take on Joe Johnston’s creative adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s book “Jumanji” back in 2017, it seemed like another silly remake destined for the cinematic scrap heap. Taking the ruminative and often freaky Robin Williams-starring fantasy and turning in into a video game movie starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Nick Jonas, and Jack Black? It sounded like Hollywood’s reboot machine was on the fritz, kicking out random ideas on a whim.
And yet Jake Kasdan’s late December release “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” subverted those expectations, offering up a funny and self-reflective spin on both reboots and video game movies,...

Jake Kasdan’s action-comedy “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” was an unexpected smash in 2016, and with good cause. The film was a smart, exciting blockbuster that used video-game mechanics to tell an uplifting power fantasy.
After all, “Jumanji” asked, what are most video games if not a transportive experience, in which the player takes on powers and abilities beyond their own? And if that experience was literal, instead of merely simulated, how incredible would that be?
Kasdan’s sequel, “Jumanji: The Next Level” adds an all-new question to the franchise, and it’s surprisingly bleak: What happens after you come back from that empowering fantasy world and return to a humdrum life filled with all your old depressions and anxieties? “The Next Level” posits that life might have been hard before, but it can be borderline unlivable if you know there’s a better one waiting for you in a...

When Sony dusted off its 22-year-old “Jumanji” movie for a distant sequel in 2017, it looked to some as though Hollywood had hit rock bottom in terms of pillaging its own properties. In fact, “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” proved to be that rare reboot that built upon its initial high concept — a jungle-themed board game that takes over a family’s living room — with a clever new riff, where four mismatched teens, thrust together in detention, are sucked into an old-school video game console, assigned to avatars who are nothing like their real-world personalities.
It was like “The Breakfast Club” with a 21st-century twist, where the nerd becomes Dwayne Johnson’s brawny hero, the popular girl winds up stuck in Jack Black’s body, and so on. More often than not, effects-driven blockbusters get dumber as the series goes along, but “Jumanji: The Next Level” invents some fun ideas to keep things fresh,...

Although the original Jumanji was a decent-sized hit in 1995, no one was expecting 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to clear $400 million at the U.S. box office alone and nearly a billion worldwide. But evidently there was a lot of nostalgic good will for the brand, and love for its lead actors. While Welcome to the Jungle no one’s idea of a great movie, it was passable fantasy entertainment that paid dutiful homage to its predecessor and coasted largely on the charisma of its game cast.
Such unprecedented success for an IP that had been largely dormant for two decades was not going to slip away without Sony Pictures cashing in for all it’s worth, so here we are two years later with Jumanji: The Next Level cued up at theaters everywhere.

While 2017’s Jumanji reboot welcomed us to the jungle, its sequel succeeds in taking us to The Next Level.
The set up is broadly the same; Jumanji is in grave danger and only the actions of Smoulder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson) and crew can save it. Though wonderfully grounded with the chemistry of the original four, it’s the new additions which allow the film to hit new heights.
The film begins with the four high school friends cast far and wide. Bethany (Madison Iseman) is holidaying in exotic climes, ‘Fridge’ (Ser’Darius Blain) has seemingly been locked in the gym since the last film, while Martha (Morgan Turner) and Spencer (Alex Wolff) are both back from college. The latter hasn’t exactly been revelling life in The Big Apple and it’s this crisis of confidence which causes him to dive back into the world of Jumanji. Fast forward and the...

The old gang re-enter the video game fantasy world for more body-swap hijinks and Indiana Jones-ish adventures, and Johnson levels-up his comedy stylings
Jumanji is back, activating the time-honoured sequel device of bringing in character actors from the older grandparent generation. It is showing every sign of becoming a very solid family-movie franchise, cheerfully drawing once more on the traditions of Indiana Jones and the body-swap movies of yesteryear. And there is once again a really nice quadrophonic chemistry between its four stars: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black (joined by more big names this time around), and the odd-couple comedy bonding of Hart and Johnson. (A noticeable flaw is that Black does not get much of a chance to demonstrate his comedy chops.)

Sony’s Jumanji: The Next Level opens early in 18 overseas markets this week, beginning today in France and including Netherlands, some of South East Asia and, notably, China, through Friday. This is a different rollout pattern to 2017’s reboot, Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, which went day-and-date with domestic in 53 offshore markets, landing No. 1 in 28 of those for a $49.5M bow at historical rates.
In the like-for-like markets going this week, Welcome To The Jungle did $54.8M at today’s international box office rates. Industry projections for The Next Level are coming in at the $60M+ mark. About $40M of that is expected in China where star Dwayne Johnson has a solid base. His last pictures in the Middle Kingdom have done robust business including Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw ($201M), Rampage ($156.3M), San Andreas ($103M) and Skyscraper ($98.4M).

"This next adventure is even more challenging!" Sony Pictures has debuted the second & final trailer for the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, the follow-up to the new Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle movie that was a sort-of sequel to the original Jumanji movie from 1995. This time, they get sent back into the game but the characters are switched - different people end up with the same four avatars. But where is everyone else? Nothing is as they expect inside. The players must brave parts unknown, from arid deserts to snowy mountains, in order to escape the world's most dangerous game. The full cast this time includes Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan as avatars; Danny DeVito, Ser'Darius Blain, Danny Glover, Morgan Turner as players; along with Alex Wolff, Nick Jonas, Colin Hanks, Rhys Darby, Awkwafina, and Dania Ramirez. This looks like it might be just as wildly entertaining as the first movie.

2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle surprised us all. Not just by making nearly $1 billion at the box office, but by being a genuinely entertaining movie that updated the original 1996 film in some smart ways. It’s no surprise that Sony fast-tracked a sequel, then, and the trailer for Jumanji 3 has finally landed online today, teasing that the dangerous game will be taken to the next level.
As you can see, Jumanji: The Next Level reunites the dream team from the last movie for new adventures in the jungle. Dwayne Johnson returns as video game avatar Dr. Smoulder Bravestone, as does Karen Gillan (Ruby Roundhouse), Kevin Hart (Mouse Finbar) and Jack Black (Sheldon Oberon). Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Ser’Darius Blain and Morgan Turner also reprise their roles as the kids who get lost in Jumanji. And don’t forget that Nick Jonas and Colin Hanks are back, too.

Johnson now plays Danny DeVito’s character in video game Jumanji form and Hart plays Danny Glover’s character. The official title of “Jumanji 3” was announced on Monday morning as Columbia Pictures released the first trailer for “Jumanji: The Next Level.”
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is once again dropped in a remote jungle with Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black, but a lot has changed since we last saw them together.
Danny Glover, Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Ser’Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner and Alex Wolff also star in the movie set for release on Dec. 13.

While our favorite lead characters all look the same … they’re very different on the inside because “the game is busted.” On the plus side, Johnson’s hips are more flexible, and no, they are not dead or in hell.
As the trailer promises, everything you know about Jumanji is about to change.

"Remember - the future of Jumanji is in your hands!" Sony Pictures has debuted the first official trailer for the sequel Jumanji: The Next Level, continuing the brand new Jumanji board game-inspired series of movies which kicked off with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017. This time, they get sent back into the game but the characters are switched - different people end up with the same avatars from the first one. But where is everyone else? We'll have to play to find out exactly what's going on here. The four main players are all back: Dwayne Johnson / Alex Wolff, Jack Black / Madison Iseman, Kevin Hart / Ser'Darius Blain, and Karen Gillan / Morgan Turner. And the full cast also includes Nick Jonas, Colin Hanks, Awkwafina, Danny DeVito, Danny Glover, Rhys Darby, Massi Furlan, and Dania Ramirez. This looks even more like a video game movie than the last one, but it still doesn't seem any better.

Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black are thrown into another crazy adventure in the first trailer for Sony Pictures’ “Jumanji: The Next Level.” The film is the sequel to 2017’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” a surprise Christmas smash hit that went on to earn $404 million in the U.S. and a huge $964 million worldwide. The film set a domestic record for Sony and passed “Spider-Man” to become the studio’s highest-grossing U.S. release (unadjusted for inflation), which means the pressure is on for “The Next Level” to deliver the box office goods this upcoming holiday season.

Combining action and adventure with some self-aware role-playing satire, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was, as our very own Matt Donato put it, an energetic expedition into genre-loving wilds. Though it may have taken the easy route with a straightforward narrative, director Jake Kasdan still created a surprisingly smart comedy that resonated with audiences.

Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle was an energetic expedition into genre-loving wilds that channeled Jurassic World and other thrilling creature romps when it landed in theaters back in 2017. True, it did often follow the straightest, narrowest narrative path, but some crack-whip camaraderie and enjoyable role-playing satire ensured it was a thoroughly enjoyable ride. For as many dumb jokes there were in the film, director Jake Kasdan still managed to piece together a deceptively smart comedy that left us yearning for more.
And thankfully, we’ll be getting just that with Jumanji 3, which is now in production. We know this thanks to frequent updates from star Dwayne Johnson, who’s taken to Instagram once again to share a great new photo from the movie. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was an unexpected mega-hit for Sony back in Christmas 2017. It’s no surprise, then, that a sequel – technically a second sequel, following the Robin Williams-starring original from 1995 – is set to arrive this December. The studio isn’t messing with the formula that worked so well in the last movie, either, as all four jungle-dwelling leads will be back. They’re even in the exact same costumes as last time.
You can see that for yourself in the image below, which marks our first look at the currently untitled sequel. From left to right, we have Kevin Hart as Mouse Finbar, Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse, Jack Black as Professor Sheldon Oberon and, last but not least, Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Smolder Bravestone.
In fact, it was Johnson who shared the photo on his Instagram, teasing what’s in store in the film with a catchy rhyme:

Nick Jonas is returning to Sony’s sequel to “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” reprising his role as Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough.
The plot of the film is being kept under wraps. Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan are also set to return and Awkwafina is in final negotiations for a significant role. Danny DeVito and Danny Glover have also joined the cast, and the four teens from the first film are also returning.
Jake Kasdan returns to direct from a screenplay he co-wrote with Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner. Matt Tolmach will again produce with Seven Bucks’ Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia, along with Kasdan. The untitled movie will open on Dec. 13, a week before Disney-Lucasfilm’s “Star Wars: Episode IX” launches.

2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle turned out to be a colossal hit for Sony, with its total gross almost scraping $1 billion. It’s no surprise, then, that the studio’s already working on the sequel, with Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Kevin Hart and Jack Black all set to reprise their roles. What’s more, it’s now been confirmed that the rest of the cast from the previous movie will all return as well.
Chief among them is Nick Jonas. The singer/actor effectively played the Robin Williams role in the plot as his character Alex – his avatar’s name was Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough – was the player stuck in the game that the others had to free from the mystical jungle. The film ended with time reset and Alex having enjoyed a full life outside of the video game, but apparently he’ll be back inside come the sequel.

The hilarious and popular Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), has an untitled sequel coming out this year, and the casting news just keeps getting better. We already knew that main players Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan were returning. Now we have word that the four teenagers in the film will also all be coming back. Ser’Darius Blain, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, and Morgan Turner will all return as teen gamers, reprising their roles of high schoolers that got sucked into the Jumanji video game while serving a Saturday detention, cleaning their school basement.
New members of the cast include Awkwafina, Danny Glover, and Danny DeVito. The original cast was already so solidly funny, and these additions just add so much more comedic talent and fun. I’m excited for this sequel, my kids are out of their minds excited for this sequel, so...
