I suppose the Hitchhikers‘ ground has been thoroughly salted at this point – I’ve seen the movie; you don’t need to tell me – which is why we’ve gotten two Dirk Gently TV series and these comics over the past decade. But even leaving aside how much Douglas Adams was a writer of voice to begin with, the Dirk books were fun because of the way they were told rather than the vague shaggy-dog stories they told. So doing the same sort of thing in a different medium feels like the wrong next step: the Adams estate would have been better off commissioning someone to write more Dirk novels, I think: assuming anyone could convincingly do that, which is the rub.
Anyway, there is a comics series continuing the Dirk Gently books. This first miniseries, from 2016 – probably not coincidentally the same year as the second, more successful TV show – promises there will be more,...

Now that brother, Spider (also played by Kirby), is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting—but making it a lot more dangerous instead.

Jagged Little Pill, the Broadway musical of Alanis Morissette songs, will not reopen at the Broadhurst Theater following its current Covid suspension, producers announced tonight.
With the announcement, the Tony- and Grammy Award-winning musical becomes the first Broadway casualty of December’s Omicron surge in New York City.
In a statement, producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price said tonight that “the drastic turn of events this week with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has, once again, changed everything. We are dismayed by what appears to be another substantial public health crisis, and – due to the detection of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the company – need to prioritize the health and safety of the cast, crew, and entire team working on Jagged Little Pill. Update Throughout Actors’ Equity Association has hired New York labor attorney Micah Wissinger to conduct the independent review of the workplace at Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill as a result of last week’s claims by non-binary former cast member Nora Schell that they had been intimidated into postponing medical attention during the production’s preview period.
In a statement today, Equity said that Wissinger, a partner at Levy Ratner, has extensive experience in labor and employment law, “including conducting workplace investigations and representing transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.”
“As a transgender man, Wissinger brings relevant personal experience in addition to his extensive professional qualifications to the investigation,” Equity said. “We trust Mr. Wissinger to conduct a thorough and fair examination of the experiences of Nora Schell and other company members at the show.”

Two former cast members of Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill, including Tony-nominated featured actress Celia Rose Gooding, released statements today accusing the production of doing, as Gooding writes, “harm to the trans and non-binary community both onstage and off.”
Nora Schell, a Black non-binary actor who made their Broadway debut in the chorus and other roles as an original company member of the Alanis Morissette musical and who will not return to the show when it reopens on Oct. 21, tweeted a statement today outlining what they say were repeated instances when they were “intimidated, coerced, and forced by multiple higher ups to put off critical and necessary surgery to remove growths from my vagina that were making me anemic.”
Schell writes that during previews of the musical in 2019, they were told by their gynecologist that surgery for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome was needed, but that the news was either ignored or...

Update, with Lauren Patten statements When Boston area audiences saw a pre-Broadway performance of the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill in 2018, they saw actor Lauren Patten sing a powerful, showstopping rendition of the hit song “You Oughta Know,” with the young performer delivering the blistering number as a lovestruck – and gender non-conforming – teenager.
When Broadway audiences saw the same show in 2019 – which reopens from the Covid pandemic shutdown on Oct. 21 at the Broadhurst Theatre – audiences again saw the scene-stealing, soon-to-be-Tony-nominated Patten in the role, but references to the character’s being nonbinary were all but gone. And on social media, Patten, a cisgender woman, had shifted from referring to her Jagged character Jo as “they” or “them” to “she” or “her.”

Malachi Kirby has been cast in the leading roles of Charlie and Spider in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s “Anansi Boys,” the streaming service revealed Tuesday.
Per its official description, Amazon’s “Anansi Boys” follows Charlie, a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father, Mr. Nancy. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that his father was Anansi: trickster god of stories. And he learns that he has a brother. Now his brother, Spider, is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting but making it a lot more dangerous.
As previously announced, Delroy Lindo will star as Charlie and Spider’s father, Anansi/Mr. Nancy, a character who first appeared in Gaiman’s novel “American Gods.” Though that book, which has connections to “Anansi Boys,” was adapted into a now-canceled TV series at Starz, the two shows will not be connected.

First published in 2005, “Anansi Boys” follows Charlie Nancy, a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father, Mr. Nancy. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that his father was Anansi: trickster god of stories. And he learns that he has a brother. Now his brother, Spider, is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting but making it a lot more dangerous.
The character of Mr. Nancy appears in both “Anansi Boys” and the Gaiman novel “American Gods,” the latter of which is currently airing a series adaptation on Starz. However, there is no connection between the two projects and “Anansi Boys” will serve as a stand-alone story.
The streamer has given the limited series a six-episode order with plans in place to begin shooting in Scotland later this year. Jagged Little Pill, the Tony Award nominated musical inspired by the Alanis Morissette album, will reopen at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre Thursday, Oct. 21, producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price announced today. Tickets are on sale now.
“Jagged Little Pill is about the complicated and harrowing effects of what it means to be disconnected from one another – and the beautiful, exhilarating healing that can happen when we rally together in those tough moments, to become beacons of vision and empathy for one another,” said Morissette in a statement. “That has never felt more real than during this tumultuous past year, and I could not be more thrilled to glimpse the light at the end of this long tunnel that the live arts community has endured.”

The newly formed Theatre Producers of Color organization announced today its first educational program to support and mentor the next generation of Bipoc producers. The 10-week, limited-space program will be tuition free.
“Producers 101″ will feature a guest speaker roster of top Broadway producers to teach what Tpoc says are the fundamentals of commercial producing, including securing rights, marketing and advertising, development paths, financing, and budgeting. The weekly course begins Jan. 25, 2021.
“Oftentimes, the opportunities for learning how to become a commercial producer are inaccessible and out of reach,” said Tpoc founder Miranda Gohh in a statement. “We’ve observed many barriers keeping Bipoc out of commercial producing, and Tpoc strives to break these down and make producing more accessible for a variety of voices. By making all of our programs free, we are allowing any Bipoc regardless of background, level of education, training, or previous accomplishment to join us.”

BBC America already has one wacky British time traveler on its schedule, but with all of time and space at your disposal, there’s surely room for one more. Enter “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency,” a completely bonkers series based on the novels by Douglas Adams.
Created by Max Landis, the series is a sci-fi mystery with comedic sensibility and a helluva lot of storylines. Like the 2012 TV adaptation before it, “Dirk Gently” dispenses with the book’s plot — which some have proclaimed unfilmable — in favor of an original mystery. Landis’ version also dispenses with all of the book’s characters save for the titular detective himself.
