The holidays may be over by the time January rolls around, but Arrow Video will still have gifts in store for horror fans with Blu-ray releases that include Dario Argento's The Cat O' Nine Tails, Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator, and Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes.
We have release details and images of Arrow Video's January Blu-ray releases below. The Cat O' Nine Tails is a limited edition item, and while Re-Animator and The Hills Have Eyes were previously released as limited editions by Arrow Video, they will be hitting shelves as re-releases in January (with slightly less goodies, but still plenty of bonus features and eye-popping 4K restorations to enjoy).

It’s a scary thought, indeed, to think that it has been twenty-nine years since I first saw Dario Argento’s fifth giallo feature film which I had read about two years earlier in the pages of a back issue of Fangoria Magazine. The word giallo is the Italian word for the color yellow, and has found new life in describing a subgenre of the Italian horror film that refers to a who-done-it involving a killer who conceals their identity by wearing a large coat, a wide-brimmed hat, unisex footwear and gloves, their face always obscured or hidden completely. Very often we see the killer only in synecdoche. These stories all originated in the form of pulp novellas which sported yellow covers, hence the use of the term giallo.

Arrow Video has sent us details on their two upcoming releases in August, the cheesy Microwave Massacre and the giallo film, The Bloodstained Butterfly. As usual, the team at Arrow Video will be packing both releases with all sorts of special features. Read on for all the details.

They Came For Dinner…To Find They Were It!!
Microwave Massacre stars legendary stand-up comedian and actor Jackie Vernon as Donald, a disgruntled construction worker whose wife’s predilection for haute cuisine drives him to cannibalism.
Donald unwittingly stumbles upon a solution to his two major problems in his life – his nagging wife and his lack of decent meals – when, one night, he bludgeons his better half to death with a pepper grinder in a drunken rage. Thinking on his feet, Donald dismembers the body and sets about microwaving the remains, which turn out to be rather delicious.

While Jackie Vernon is remembered by many for his stand-up comedy and for being the voice of Frosty the Snowman, cult horror fans know him as Donald, a frustrated husband who develops a taste for human flesh in 1983’s Microwave Massacre. The horror comedy will be released this summer on Blu-ray / DVD in the Us and UK by Arrow Video, who will also release 1971’s The Bloodstained Butterfly on home media with a new 4K restoration.
While the full release details for the Us Blu-ray / DVDs of Microwave Massacre and The Bloodstained Butterfly have yet to be revealed, we do have a look at the lists of special features for the UK editions, which should feature extras similar to what Us fans can enjoy.
In the UK, Arrow Video will release Microwave Massacre on Blu-ray / DVD on August 15th, followed by an August 22nd Blu-ray / DVD release of The Bloodstained Butterfly.

A lot has changed since Alan Jones from Total Film coined the term Splat Pack referring to a group of gory movie makers who sought to stretch the boundaries of what would be considered acceptable in an R rated film. The sea of blood and guts that rolled across the cinema screen starting in 2002 gradually pulled back to low tide. PG-13 became the new R rating once again and the MPAA decided to pull itself up by its bootstraps to enforce its code. For the Splat Pack, originally consisting of Rob Zombie, Eli Roth (the Frank Sinatra of the Pack according to Quentin Tarantino), James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Robert Rodriquez (added later by association), Greg McLean, Neil Marshall, Alexadre Aja and Darren Lynn Bousman, filmmaking has gone as usual, and each has made a substantial contribution to the horror genre in a positive way, testing the limits of our stomach...

Say what you will about his recent output, Dario Argento is still a legend in the horror community. The Italian director has released so many quality horror films and has given us so many nightmarish images over the years that I’m surprised that I can sleep at all at night. Two of these classics from the director will be making their way for the first time on Blu-ray in the states. Phenomena and Tenebrae will both be seeing a hi-def release courtesy of Synapse Films later this year. Arrow Video has previously released both of these in the UK and abroad, but U.S. fans will finally get to see the gory details of these two films on Blu-ray. Synapse spoke to Fangoria about the upcoming release of these two films along with a pair of other features you may have heard of:

Zombies are everywhere today, except in reality (thank God Romero for that). We recently announced that Doc Of The Dead was coming, and now we have the first bite of the film, with a teaser trailer celebrating the start of the KickStarter campaign that allows zombie fans to pre-order the film.
The documentary, written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe, who seems to specialize in nerdtastic documentaries (he also directed The People Vs. George Lucas), will feature appearances by Simon Pegg, George A. Romero, Max Brooks, Greg Nicotero, Charlie Adlard and practically everyone who has made their name in the zombie genre.

Doc of the Dead was announced earlier this year and promises to be a comprehensive tribute to zombie culture. The project is directed by Alexandre O. Philippe (The People vs. George Lucas) and segments have already been filmed with Simon Pegg and George Romero, among others.
The documentary is still in the early stages of filming, but the first trailer has been released and we have it for you to watch. We also have been provided with more information on the project, including a list of horror icons who are set to make an appearance:

Jones: back to school
The comments of under-fire 2Gb shock-jock Alan Jones are to be fact-checked by his radio station’s producers before going to air, after a new ruling by industry watchdog, the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
Jones is also to attend training sessions to ensure what he says on air is factually accurate and that he understands the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice.
The fact-checking and training mandates were suggestions made by 2Gb – which Acma has accepted.
The ruling comes after Acma found that the 2Gb presenter breached its code on accuracy in March last year, when Jones made a series of comments about climate change.
In the March broadcast, Jones said: “Human beings produce 0.001% of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere”. Acma’s beef was that Jones’ view was presented as a statement rather than opinion.
The Acma ruling was prompted by complaints made by his show’s listeners.

It’s a tight squeeze, but Dr Mumbo welcomes David Penberthy and Alan Jones into irony corner.
Last week, Penbo wrote a column in which he burned his bridges with the 2Gb host.
Today News Limited’s Penbo revealed that 2Gb has axed his unpaid slot on the Steve Price show.
That’s the 2Gb that hit out at the Sack Alan Jones campaign’s attack on free speech.

The Sunday Telegraph has taken the unusual step of outing a journalist on sister newspaper The Australian as what it claims is the source of misleading information over the Alan Jones saga.
The Sunday Tele’s move followed an attempt by critics to claim that the paper breached etiquette when it broke the story last week of Alan Jones’ comments about Julia Gillard’s father having died of shame.
The newspaper argues that there was no obligation to keep the comments secret, and that the transcript reveals that no such request was made to the audience despite claims to the contrary in Fairfax Media’s Sydney Morning Herald.
Today’s Sunday Tele reports:
“It can also be revealed the guest who told Fairfax on condition of anonymity that reporters were asked to identify themselves and that the events were ‘off the record’ was Mitchell Nadin, a cadet on The Australian.

Opponents of Alan Jones have had a big win.
Owner Macquarie Radio Network has pulled all advertising from his 2Gb breakfast show.
For those that don’t like him – or his callous comments about Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s father – it’s close to a victory, at least for now.
The question now though is where will they stop? Like the Sack Vile Kyle campaign which is still chasing 2Day FM’s Kyle Sandilands, is it only a win if he is never allowed an audience again?
I note from the Sack Alan Jones Facebook page that supporters are being organised to demand that advertisers should commit now to not supporting Jones’ show in 2013. In the comment thread, others are discussing how to target anybody who pays him to speak at events.
Can somebody hold views so unpleasant that, even if they break no laws, they should never be allowed to broadcast again?...

Macquarie Radio Network has taken the unprecedented move of suspending all advertising on the Alan Jones breakfast show, accusing campaigners against the show of censorship and cyber bullying of advertisers.
The move follows the continuing backlash to Jones’ comments in a speech that Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s father died of shame.
The announcement was accompanied by a lengthy statement from Macquarie Radio Network boss Russell Tate accusing opponents of Jones of “21st Century censorship, via cyber bullying”.
Tate’s comments:
“The nature, tone and volume of the reaction to Jones’ remarks, and in particular the threats being made through social media to companies advertising in Jones’ program and the disruption being caused to their businesses, have made it necessary for Mrn to call some ‘time out”.
“Some simple facts need to be acknowledged.

While it's true that Ozzy Osbourne may well be the Prince of Darkness, there is only one undisputed King, a man who has rocked and shocked audiences all over the world with his outrageous, and outrageously entertaining live shows for over four decades, and who shows no sign of letting up any time soon. I speak, of course, of the one and only Mr Alice Cooper, a man who has forgotten more about horror movies than most people know to start with (with the possible exception of the encyclopaedic Kim Newman), and in whose company I was privileged to spend an hour and a half on the Friday before Halloween at the British Film Institute in London as he discussed his favourite Nightmare Movies with an audience of just 400 or so people.

Receiving it UK Premiere at the 2011 FrightFest Halloween All-Nighter at the Vue Cinema in London’s Leicester Square last month, The Human Centipede 2 [Full Sequence] comes, once again, from the twisted genius of Tom Six, who this time teams up with newcomer actor Laurence R. Harvey for a film that is surprising, shocking, satirical, sobering, sensational… and utterly grotesque all at the same time.
Director Tom Six, star Laurence R. Harvey and many members of the cast attended the all-nighter where Alan Jones, renown author, journalist and critic (and FrightFest organiser) sat down to talk all things centipede with director Six and his leading man Harvey.

Of all the big long-running horror franchises, Nightmare On Elm Street is perhaps the most interesting. Created in 1984 by Wes Craven, the original film and its iconic razor gloved child murderer Freddy Krueger went on to become New Line Cinema‘s biggest cash cow – quickly turning into an unstoppably popular series of films that ran throughout the ‘80s and into the early ‘90s.
While fellow franchises like Halloween and Friday The 13th revelled in repetitive stalk and slash scenarios, the Elm Street films- while just as inconsistent in quality – made frequent attempts to keep things inventive and unique. Freddy himself also changed over the course of the seven films, transforming into an ‘80s icon, known more for his wicked sense of humour than the fact that he‘s a child killer.

Okay, by now you've all heard that The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) was banned in the UK. Well, a little snip here and a little snip there, and now our neighbors across the pond are going to get their chance to see director Tom Six's twisted new film. And it will be screened by Film4 FrightFest.
Yes, technically our British brethren are not getting the entire Full Sequence, but just a mere two minutes and 37 seconds (32 individual cuts in all, including "…lips being stapled to naked buttocks…" Is it immature to giggle at that thought? Buttocks, huh huh) have been removed. No doubt there's still plenty of depravity for the audience to enjoy.

Tom Six’s controversial sequel to The Human Centipede, which was initially banned by the BBFC, will fill the midnight slot at Film4 FrightFest’s Halloween all-nighter at the Vue Cinema in London’s Leicester Square on Sat October 29th.
Tom and producer Ilona Six will be attending, as will some of the cast. Tom Six said today:
I am insanely happy I can now show my beautiful deformed baby to the FrightFest audience.
Alan Jones, FrightFest co-director, commented:
We’re delighted to be hosting the UK premiere of The Human Centipede [Full Sequence]. FrightFest world premiered the original film also directed by Tom Six, and this sequel is exactly the sort of genre movie FrightFest is world famous for championing: it’s surprising, shocking, satirical, sobering and sensational. Horror movies rarely come as controversial as Six’ latest assault on the senses and we cannot wait to let our audience share its...

The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) will be screened at the Film4 FrightFest Halloween all-nighter in London this month. The controversial film was passed by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) yesterday following two minutes and 37 seconds of cuts. Director Tom Six and producer Ilona Six will attend the film's UK premiere at the Vue Cinema in London's Leicester Square on Saturday, October 29. Tickets for the all-nighter are priced at £50 and are available now. The BBFC had initially refused to classify the film and claimed that "cuts are not a viable option". Director Tom Six slammed the decision and defended the film as "art". Six said today: "I am insanely happy I can now show my beautiful deformed baby to the FrightFest audience." Festival co-director Alan Jones said: "FrightFest world premiered (more)...

Peter Jackson made quite an impression long before Frodo and Sam set out to set fire to a piece of jewellery, with some expertly crafted and inventive low budget horrors with Braindead (renamed Dead Alive in the States) a choice landmark on my own particular cinematic horizon.
Stepping from the gore soaked ruins of the early Jackson pantheon we find ourselves at a very different place in 1994, a place in which the director set his sights on a story rooted in the controlled hysteria of adolescence and marked Jackson’s maturation as a masterful storyteller. It would prove Jackson’s ‘breakthrough’ film whatever such terms mean to people, and it showed that beyond the wit, invention and playful nature of Bad Taste and Braindead this was a director capable of powerful dramatic cinema and though it remains something of a curio in the filmography Heavenly Creatures retains its power and its charm to this day.
