The Casting Society of America’s annual Artios Awards, which recognize superior achievement in the casting of film, TV and theater projects, has announced the nominees for its film categories, which range from 200 million blockbusters to low-and-micro budget titles.
Anticipated Oscar darlings such as “Elvis,” “Tar,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “The Fabelmans” and “Glass Onion” are present along with juggernauts “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Batman.” “Top Gun: Maverick” is strangely absent.
But the real surprises are the smaller titles that have gotten little awards attention in races so far such as “Bros,” “Emily the Criminal,” “Armageddon Time” and “Spoiler Alert,” along with streaming titles such as AppleTV+’s “Cha Cha Real Smooth” and “Causeway,” Netflix’s “Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical” and “White Noise,” and Amazon’s “Emergency” and “Catherine Called Birdy” among them.

Hulu announced a 10-episode order for Jason Reitman’s “Casual” on Thursday. The decision was unveiled two days after the streaming service expanded its partnership with Viacom. Last month, Hulu got into the mini-series business, ordering J.J. Abrams’ adaptation of Stephen King’s “11/22/63.” “We are excited to continue working closely with immensely talented creators to bring compelling and original content to the Hulu audience,” Beatrice Springborn head of originals at Hulu, wrote in a blog post. Reitman’s series, which is a half-hour, single-camera comedy, is set to debut sometime next year. It doesn’t have a casting director attached yet. In the past, Reitman worked with Jessica Kelly and Suzanne Smith on “Young Adult,” Mindy Marin on “Up in the Air” and more recently John Papsidera on this year’s “Men, Women & Children.” Want more L.A. news? Luv will have its world premiere in the narrative competition at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival.
First off, congratulations on finishing Luv, and of course for getting into Sundance! Sheldon, what’s your background and how did you get into film?
Sheldon Candis: I was born in Baltimore. Half of my childhood was there and the other half in Statesville, Nc. My love for movies came from two places: One, my father would religiously take my mom and me to see movies...

The first time that writer Diablo Cody teamed up with director Jason Reitman, the result was "Juno." Their latest collaboration, "Young Adult," tackles such topics as regret, reliving the past, and whether or not an individual can change.Charlize Theron plays the unlikable, entitled, and bitchy young-adult novelist and wannabe home-wrecker Mavis, who decides to return to her hometown and win back her old high-school flame after her book series ends. With a failed marriage and a faltering career, Mavis is determined to fix her life, but things don't work out quite the way she expected. While in town, she reunites with former classmate Matt, who is also trying to overcome the past, and the duo forge an unexpected bond. Patton Oswalt plays Matt, who is permanently disabled from a beating in high school.Casting directors Jessica Kelly and Suzanne Smith got the job done in about five weeks. They say Reitman's.

Lisa Soltau was living in Seattle when her friend Bonnie Gillespie sent her a book she had written called "Casting Qs," a compilation of interviews with casting directors. "I read it and I absolutely loved all the aspects of the job," says Soltau. "I loved the entertainment industry and movies and television. The process of casting sounded wonderful."She called one of the two casting offices in Seattle and ended up working as an intern there for about six months. But the CD told her she should move to New York or Los Angeles if she really wanted to pursue a career in casting. "I picked L.A. because I had lived there once for about three years and I thought it would be easier to acclimate there," Soltau says. "Plus I wanted to work on 'Six Feet Under,' which was airing at the time.

An actor, among the thousands who have befriended me as a "networking receptacle" using their Facebook status for something other than telling me:– My cat is in heat and so am I. – I hate life and people. You should too! – I...

Sandra Bullock, 'The Blind Side'For years, Sandra Bullock has charmed audiences with endearing turns in films like "While You Were Sleeping," "Miss Congeniality," and "Two Weeks Notice." While most people associate her with romantic comedies, Bullock has also turned in terrific dramatic performances in films like "Crash" and the underrated "Infamous." She probably didn't have awards aspirations when she signed on to play Leigh Anne Tuohy, the wealthy Memphis matriarch who takes in an African-American teenager named Michael Oher and helps him launch a football career, in "The Blind Side."On the page, the role could smack of condescending schmaltz, with lines like "You threaten my son, you threaten me." Yet when asserted by Bullock, with a perfect Tennessee twang, they work. And she gets off some great ones, such as when she warns one person, "If you so much as set foot downtown, you will be sorry.

For casting director Billy Hopkins, the central challenge of director Lee Daniels' "Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire" was obvious and immediate. The main character, Claireece "Precious" Jones, is a 300-pound African-American teenager—not exactly a common Hollywood type. "My associate Jessica Kelly, she and I said, 'Okay, we're probably going to have to find a real person,' " he recalls. This person also needed to be able to withstand an emotionally grueling shoot: After being impregnated by her absentee father, the character is subjected to endless abuse from her toxic mother (Mo'Nique) and mercilessly teased by cruel classmates. Hopkins and Kelly did a massive search, setting up open calls in New York and Los Angeles. They viewed countless tapes from all over the country. They even put together a summer "boot camp" of 10 promising contenders, none of whom ultimately satisfied the casting needs. "It was almost Labor Day,...
