I’ll freely admit there was a heavy dose of trepidation going into Apocalypse Kiss. You see I’ve had the “pleasure” of watching one of writer/director Christian Jude Grillo’s films (Deer Crossing aka Wasteland) before and it wasn’t the greatest of experiences… But just like you should never judge a book by its cover I feel you should never judge a filmmaker from just one film, even if that film was a complete shambles. Grillo’s previous effort was a backwoods thriller, a poor mans Texas Chainsaw Massacre if you will but this time out Grillo aims his sights higher, bringing us a dystopian vision of a city in ruin, controlled by corrupt politicians and evil corporations.

Originally titled Deer Crossing, Wasteland comes from Christian Grillo, who not only wrote and directed the film but also edited it a well; and judging by the end result he should probably had help on all three counts! I always approach low-budget independent cinema with an open mind and nary an expectation, after all you can’t compare these types of flicks to big-budget Hollywood flicks. But what you can can do is compare them to others of their ilk – and even comparing it to the lowest of low budget flicks, Wasteland fares pretty badly…
The film sees Maggie Chancelor and her son Cole involved in an accident on their way to visit family. The pair are found by Lukas, a farmer, who takes them to his farm...

*full disclosure: an online screening of this film was provided by Osiris Entertainment. Director/writer: Christian Grillo. Cast: Christopher Mann, Laura L. Cottrel, Doug Bradley, Ernie Hudson and K.J. Linhein. Osiris Entertainment is one of this film fan's favourite distributors. They are based in Chatsworth, California and they tend to pick indie productions for their markets. Some of their films have been excellent such as: Ashes, Monsters in the Woods and Night Drive. But, every so often they will back a dismal project like Behind Your Eyes. Deer Crossing falls in this second less thrilling category. Deer Crossing is an indie film production that was likely made for under 15K. The film notably stars: Doug Bradley (Hellraiser), Ernie Hudson (The Crow) and Christopher Mann. These actors are under utilized in a film that has no sense of pacing. There is no tension here, in what is supposed to be a thriller.

The 2nd annual PollyGrind assaults Las Vegas during an epic length film festival that runs Oct. 8-17 at Theatre 7 with enough sleaze and violence to make Sin City residents feel right at home.
Actually, the fest does open up on the 7th with a concert at Neon Venus with local acts like Monster Zero, Creepersin and many more.
However, the film portion of the fest opens on the 8th with Stuart Simpson‘s acclaimed Australian gorefest El Monstro Del Mar!, one of the best Russ Meyer/Roger Corman mash-ups with a Down Under twist. Read the Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film review of this gem here.
Other Bad Lit favorites in the lineup are Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson‘s The Taint, which is still completely grossing out audiences on the festival circuit, and The Uh-Oh Show, the splatter-filled horror comedy by the Godfather of Gore himself Herschell Gordon Lewis.

Potent Pictures is gearing up next month to shoot Deer Crossing from writer/director Christian Grillo. The film follows a woman named Maggy Chancelor (to be played by Laura Lynn Cottrel) as drives into the Pocono Mountains with her 6-year-old son Cole to visit family and is forced onto an unfamiliar detour. After she crashes her car while avoiding a deer on the road, Maggy and her son are “rescued” by a stranger—and are not seen for eight years. When Cole is eventually recovered and brought home at age 14, he tells retired detective Derrick Stanswood (Christopher Mann) the horrible story of what happened to them during that time.
The film is looking for some help to secure some extra financing, which horror fans are encouraged to check out here.
We’ll keep you updated soon.
