Youth content company Astronauts Wanted is teaming up with Mikey Murphy -- a popular vlogger and filmmaker, who counts 1.3 million subscribers on YouTube -- to produce a short film about high school bullying.
Dubbed Andy (working title) and co-written by Murphy and Emily Mattoon, the film is loosely based on Murphy’s personal experiences. It follows a bullied teen who is driven to exact revenge on his tormentors through social media, leading to harrowing consequences. Murphy will executive produce and direct the project alongside Judy McGrath, Nick Shore, Kim Rosen, and Cassidy Lunnen, who are serving as EPs for Astronauts Wanted.

The success of the Hunger Games movies have driven a boom of sci-fi projects aimed at young adult viewers, and digital media companies have participated in that gold rush. Studios like Legendary Digital and AwesomenessTV have given the green light to projects that feature fresh-faced protagonists in dystopian worlds. The latest studio offering its take on millennial-facing sci-fi is Astronauts Wanted, which has teamed up with the forthcoming platform Blackpills for a series called The Un/Desirables.
The Un/Desirables takes place in a futuristic utopia that admits “only the best and brightest of the millennial generation,” according to Astronauts Wanted. Though it initially seems like an idyllic world, the show’s setting hides dark secrets, which are uncovered by the protagonist, a blogger named Simone.
Charlene Bagcal will serve as the director of The Un/Desirables and Jeremy Kaufman will write it. “Jeremy and Charlene have created such a unique,...

What will happen if Donald Trump becomes the President of the United States? According to digital content studio Astronauts Wanted and the news distributors at NowThis, Americans should prepare for the Trumpocalypse. That’s the title of a newly-launched web series that can be found on NowThis’ well-trafficked social media network.
Trumpocalypse, which is co-produced by Astronauts Wanted, NowThis, Oddfellows Labs, and Automatik, is animated in a computer-generated 3D style that blows heads out of proportion and gives the series an over-the-top look to match its tone. Across a series of short, fast-paced scenes, we learn how the Trump regime has affected everything from reality TV to Wall Street to transgender access to restrooms. The series is almost too silly to offend anyone, and its fast pace leaves little room to process the most shocking jokes, but there’s no doubt where its creators lie on the political spectrum.

A pair of digital studios are teaming up for a new web series. Astronauts Wanted, the production company founded by former MTV exec Judy McGrath, will team up with Bernie Su and David Tochterman’s Canvas Media Studios for Socio, an upcoming crime thriller.
Socio will star actress India Eisley as a social media-obsessed teenager who teams up with a detective to hunt down a serial killer. Su described Eisley’s character to The Hollywood Reporter as “a teenage sociopath who operates on social media,” so viewers should expect a darker tone, especially when compared to previous Su projects like The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Emma Approved.
Both Astronauts Wanted and Canvas are known for productions that use social media as a storytelling device, so their collaborative effort will naturally feature a large number of transmedia integrations. Viewers will be able to follow the main characters on Twitter and interact with them across social sites,...
