In a surprising move, Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie has parted ways with his entire representation team. He has cut ties with his agents at CAA, Key Creatives manager Ken Kamins and attorney David Fox, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
He is now repped by Matt Galsor of Greenberg Glusker, who also happens to be Tom Cruise’s attorney.
The move is causing waves, as his team had been with him for years as he climbed the ranks from screenwriter to Cruise collaborator and franchise filmmaker. McQuarrie was an almost unstoppable force until this past summer’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, which Hollywood had high hopes for in light of 2022 hit Top Gun: Maverick, which McQuarrie produced and co-wrote, as well as in light of the well regarded previous installment, Mission: Impossible Fallout.

Exclusive: Christopher McQuarrie has major change in his representation. He has left CAA, his longtime manager Ken Kamins at Key Creatives, and his attorney David Fox. I’m told he will be represented by Matt Galsor at Greenberg Glusker. He is the attorney for Tom Cruise, with whom McQuarrie has been a regular collaborator on the Mission: Impossible blockbuster films.
This is a shocker reverberating around town. It sounds like McQuarrie has a lot of his runway lit going into the future; among other things, he is producing the outer space movie that Cruise and director Doug Liman are planning with Universal, NASA and Space X. I understand there wasn’t a lot of drama here in the conveyance of the exit, but if McQuarrie has his dance card set far into the future, it certainly seems like he will be saving a lot of money in commissions. Rebecca Glashow, BBC Studios’ CEO of global distribution, has worked with many leading media brands that do many different things. In Demand, Comcast, Discovery, Viacom — the common thread between them all is the push to deliver “content that matters, to connect with people, no matter what part of the food chain you sit in,” Glashow told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View.
Distribution, monetization, advertising — none of the moneymaking arenas within the entertainment industry matter if a company isn’t first and foremost putting out titles that resonate with viewers. It’s why, above all else, Glashow believes her main job requirement is to “super serve audiences” with a diverse array of impactful programming.
That perspective comes from a place of deep passion for storytelling instilled in her by her Nobel Prize-winning particle physicist father Sheldon Glashow.

Entertainment attorney Matt Galsor, partner in Century City-based firm Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman & Machtinger, spoke no English when he arrived in Los Angeles from Ukraine with his family in 1992 following decades living among the many Soviet Jewish refuseniks denied the right to emigrate to Israel, the United States and other countries beginning in the 1970s. They came to Los Angeles to join other family members, not because it was the heart of Hollywood. Galsor learned English, went on to get his B.A. at UCLA and attended Columbia in New York. He wasn’t thinking about the entertainment biz when he decided to return to L.A. — and landed his first job with B-movie king Roger Corman, known for titillating titles including “Little Shop of Horrors,” “The Man With the X-Ray Eyes” and “Attack of the Crab Monster.” For this week’s Office With a View, Galsor told TheWrap his...

George Miller has tapped Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II to star in “Furiosa,” the prequel movie based on Charlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa character from 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Taylor-Joy will play title role, a younger version of Furiosa. Miller had said in a May interview with The New York Times that he’d been searching for searching for an actress in her 20s to take over the role. He said at the time he had considered using de-aging technology in order to allow Theron — who’s 44 –to play the part again, but has decided against doing so. Taylor-Joy is 24.
Miller will direct, co-write and produce “Furiosa,” along with his longtime producing partner Doug Mitchell. The film will be produced by Miller’s own Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner, together with “Fury Road” partner Warner Bros. Pictures.

George Miller told Deadline about Furiosa having a deep backstory in the Mad Max universe, and now we’ll finally get to see it: Warner Bros. is in advanced development with Furiosa, a spinoff feature of Miller’s multi-Oscar winning blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road about the renegade character (played in that film by Oscar winner Charlize Theron) who was a notable force in Max’s survival in the desert.
The standalone movie will reveal the origins of Furiosa and be played by Glass actress Anya Taylor-Joy in the title role. The movie will track the genesis of Furiosa before she teamed up with Max Rockatansky in Fury Road. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also star in a movie that Miller will also direct, co-write and produce with his longtime Oscar-nominated producing partner Doug Mitchell. Anya Taylor-Joy is set to play Furiosa, the character originated by Charlize Theron in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” in a standalone action film “Furiosa” that will also star Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Warner Bros. announced Tuesday.
George Miller will return to the director’s chair for the film that will track Furiosa’s origins before she teamed up with Mad Max in “Fury Road.”
Miller will also co-write and produce, and his “Fury Road” team at his Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell production house will also return for “Furiosa.”
It’s unclear what role both Hemsworth and Abdul-Mateen II will play, but “Furiosa” is still set in the dystopian, desert wasteland Miller created as far back as the original “Mad Max” trilogy with Mel Gibson. Miller had previously been eyeing Taylor-Joy for the role among other actresses and had conceived of a backstory for Furiosa as he was writing...

Two writers to rule them all: Amazon has tapped “Star Trek 4” duo Jd Payne and Patrick McKay to develop the “Lord of the Rings” original series announced last November.
“The rich world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is filled with majesty and heart, wisdom and complexity,” Payne and McKay said in a statement. “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Amazon to bring it to life anew. We feel like Frodo, setting out from the Shire, with a great responsibility in our care — it is the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime.”
The TV series is set in Middle Earth and will explore stories that precede the events of Tolkein’s “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Amazon Studios has a multi-season commitment for the series, and the deal also includes a potential spin-off series.

Some new information regarding Amazon's The Lord of the Rings series has come to light thanks to THR. As you know, Amazon Studio paid $250 million for the right s to J.R.R. Tolkien's novels and it looks like it will be one of the most expansive series ever. Amazon has committed to a five-season run and when all is said and done, it is expected to cost over $1 billion.
Greenberg Glusker attorney Matt Galsor, who served as the chief architect of the deal and repped the Tolkien estate, talked about the deal saying:
"This is the most complicated deal I've ever seen, but it was handled relatively quickly, in a way that brought the parties together in a close relationship. It was tough, but everybody liked each other and felt like a team more as the deal closed."

Amazon’s quest to resurrect The Lord of the Rings will begin with a multi-season TV series.
Rooted in Middle-earth, the pitch itself is said to be similar to Game of Thrones in terms of scale and scope, and will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. Both Netflix and HBO had been approached by the Tolkien estate prior to last week’s revelation, but it was ultimately Amazon that shelled out close to $250 million for LotR‘s global rights, which is said to include the possibility of an additional spinoff. Like we alluded to before, this has the potential to become a Game of Thrones-level franchise for Amazon Studios.
Headed up by the company’s CEO Jeff Bezos, no details were disclosed at the time of writing, but that hasn’t stopped industry insiders from labeling the record-setting deal as “insane,” as that...

Last week we learned that Warner Bros. teamed up with the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien to develop a new series based on The Lord of the Rings. They were looking to make a deal with Amazon Studios and that deal is no officially done!
Amazon announced that that it has acquired the global television rights to the Lord of the Rings franchise and they've made a multiple-season commitment. The deal also includes additional spinoff series. They will produce the series alongside the Tolkien Estate and Trust, publisher HarperCollins and Warner Bros. Entertainment's New Line Cinema. Here's a little description that teases the series will be a prequel.
Set in Middle Earth, the television adaptation will explore new storylines preceding J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series.
I like that the series will take place prior to the events of Fellowship of the Ring.

Q: I created a short film in film school that I'm trying to turn into a full-length feature. I set up a website that allows people to watch the film (I'm sending potential investors there instead of handing out DVDs). A buddy just sent me a YouTube link that shows my film. After some searching, I found that a few different people have posted it. I want my site to be the only place you can go to see the film. Am I out of luck because pretty much anything can get posted on YouTube?
A: There's a few things in life I'm obsessed with.
Whoops. Let me say that again.
There are a few things in life with which I am obsessed (I must keep up appearances): (1) Tim and Eric Awesome Show Great Job! (my mission is to keep mentioning their show in this blog until they hire...

Q: Here's a quote from an unsolicited submission agreement I was sent. "I hereby grant to you the non-exclusive right to use any or all of the Material for any and all purposes, in perpetuity." Am I missing something or do I understand this correctly in saying that I am basically giving up all my rights to my writing if I submit it?
A: An unsolicited submission agreement like you were sent is a misnomer. It should be called an unsolicited gift agreement. It's a gift agreement, because for the privilege of being read, you actually grant to the reader the rights to your material. Imagine this: you're trying to sell your house, and a potential buyer who hasn't even seen the house yet makes you an offer - the buyer will look at the house, and in exchange the buyer will own it just for looking. No word in...

Q: I just had someone send me an option agreement. I'm not going to lie... a lot of it is legal mumbo jumbo that I don't fully understand but seems harmless. There's one thing though that seems really weird. It says that the Producer is my "attorney-in-fact" with the power to sign documents on my behalf? This strikes me as really sketchy. Is this Producer trying to pull something over on me?
A: I'm not going to tell you that the Producer is not trying to pull one over on you. All the Producer wants is the power to purchase a smallish yacht, a couple of European castles, a Picasso or two and some shrunken heads on your credit. So what if the Producer wants to go all Nic Cage in your name? At least you'll have a chance to be the next FreeCreditReport.com singer. Right?
Half-hearted attempts at humor aside,...

Q: I'm a budding producer who wants to get a great script off the ground. I'm trying to fundraise, but the writer and potential director are both looking for money at the same time. I want to make sure I don't get cut out of the package if the director's rich uncle ponies up the full budget before I can. How can I attach myself as a producer without forcing the writer to option the script to me? Is there a standard "attachment" form?
A: As a producer, you must attach yourself to every script, project, idea, concept, and fleeting thought that you come across, read about, or overhear. And if your attachment is not welcome, it's their problem. Producers aren't bothered by what others think, and they don't need an invitation to go to a party. As a budding producer, that's what you should aspire to and hope to become one day.

Q: There's a script I've been interested in for a while. I've been trying to raise some financing so that I can produce it. I think I'm close to successfully putting some financing together but I just found out that there's another producer that's suddenly interested in it. I'm afraid that I'm going to lose it. I want to option it but don't have the money yet. Anything I can do?
A: If you don't have the money right now to option it, unfortunately you're options are limited. Pun intended (as always).
The thing to keep in mind is that options don't all have to be the same. I think people tend to think option agreements must all follow the same structure: a certain payment for a 12 - 18 month option with a potential 12-18 month extension upon an additional payment. If you can convince the screenwriter (or the screenwriter's agent...
