Often in the world of movies, the hardest stories to tell are the ones based on reality. It’s even harder when there’s no access to the main people involved, leaving a tale built on hearsay and embellishments. And when the movie is about “the most famous woman in the world,” there is almost no way to do her justice. So instead, the film Diana does the impossible – it turns the world’s favorite princess into a little more than a spoiled, selfish brat. The problem is, I don’t think that was director Oliver Hirschbiegel’s intention.
The film begins in 1995, two years before Princess Diana’s untimely death. She and Prince Charles are separated, not yet officially divorced, when Diana (Naomi Watts) first lays eyes on Dr. Hasnat Kahn (Naveen Andrews) in a local hospital. Stunned as soon as she sees him, Diana quickly begins to pursue the doctor romantically.

There's a myopia to "Diana," the new film about the divorce and last great romance of Princess Diana's life, that fits its subject like one of Diana's signature, custom-tailored gowns.
Isolated, focused on her image, her few contacts with the outside world and her work, when this lonely and lovelorn woman (Naomi Watts) zeroes in on something or someone, it seems obsessive, smothering and all-consuming.
And dismiss it as worthy of a Lifetime Original Movie if you want, but this film from the director of the Fuhrer bunker drama "Downfall" gives us insights into this poor little royal plaything that Americans, at least, will find eye-opening.
Based on "Diana, Her Last Love," by Kate Snell, Oliver Hirschbiegel's film depicts a manipulator practicing her most withering lines about her failed marriage to Prince Charles in front of a vanity mirror.
"There were three of us in this marriage," she famously told her TV interrogator.

Oliver Hirschbiegel's critically reviled biopic Diana -- starring Naomi Watts as the late Princess of Wales -- was quickly dethroned by moviegoers in North America, grossing $64,914 from 38 theaters for a bleak location average of $1,708. From a screenplay based on Kate Snell's 2001 book Diana: Her Last Love, the ill-fated biopic recounts the final two years of Princess Diana's life, including her love affairs with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed. Diana is a film about a royal subject that is not given a royal treatment. From the pen of first-time screenwriter Stephen Jeffreys, it is a flat rendition of a fascinating public figure, settling on a focus of the Princess of Wales’ love affair with heart surgeon Hazmat Khan, which ultimately turns its protagonist into a withering, indecisive, lovesick girl. Naomi Watts, an actor often strong-willed and full of grace, brings to Princess Diana a complexion that the script slights for a more superficial romantic angle.
The biopic only briefly touches on Diana’s desire for privacy away from the prying paparazzi, as well as her humanitarian work in the mid-1990s to ban land mines. Interestingly, these are also the most compelling sections of the film, which directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall). Ultimately, the soapy romance between Diana and Haznat (Naveen Andrews) turns Diana into a clumsy, corny trifle,...

Diana, which hits theaters in the Us today, is a film starring Naomi Watts and Naveen Andrews. Inspired by the book Diana: Her Last Love by Kate Snell, the film looks at the last two years of the life of Diana, Princess of Wales, through her infamous interview, her divorce, the lady coming into royalty, and her death. The film, and the book, which was written with extensive interviews with close friends and confidantes, also tells the tale of Diana’s last love, or is it first? Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, Diana shines the light on her secret love affair with heart surgeon Dr. Haznat Khan and the complications they face because she was the most famous woman in the world.
As a movie there should be nothing more compelling than Diana’s story, and through this film you see a little known side of the woman, but I doubt it is a true reflection.

The Dish On Di: Hirschbiegel’s Dissection of Princess’ Last Two Years a Trifling Affair
Whether ambivalent or not about Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Princess Di biopic, Diana, which focuses on the last two years of her life leading up to her tragic death, the film’s legacy amounts to little more than a missed opportunity, a judgment that seems to be agreed upon in even the kindest of critical circles. Hirschbiegel, a German director whose best two titles are now at least a decade old, forges onward in a procession of underwhelming English language vehicles and his latest is unlikely to win him any new fans, though it’s evident that a great deal of effort went into making this a respectful and overly sympathetic portrait of the famous princess. Perhaps if the project had debuted before something like Stephen Frears’ 2006 film The Queen, which unfurls from a much more complicated,...

The new film Diana is, by turns, vivid, bathetic, moving, torrid and subversive. It is based on the book Her Last Love by Kate Snell, published in 2000, and, even if only half-true, the story is extraordinary. A few weeks before the princess died in August 1997, she had, once again, been disappointed by a man. Hasnat Khan, a heart surgeon, was, apparently, the love of her life. Khan loved her deeply too, but knew the relationship was doomed. He was Pakistani, a dedicated doctor and a private man. She had no private life. It ended in tears and she threw herself into the waiting arms of Dodi Fayed. Then came the crash and she was no more.

In the months before its U.K. release, the much-hyped "Diana" biopic has courted a fair amount of controversy, which isn't surprising considering its subject: the late Princess Diana's two-year relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan, who to this day remains guarded about their love affair.
In an interview with the Daily Mail last month, Khan, who is played by Naveen Andrews in the film, slammed the project as "based on hypotheses and gossip. ... f I watched it I would be sitting there saying, 'That's wrong, that's wrong, that's not right' every second. I couldn't put myself through that. It would be absolutely terrible."
Star Naomi Watts has confessed to harboring her own concerns about signing on for the film, first and foremost among them a fear of upsetting Diana's sons, William and Harry. "I do care deeply about how the princes feel, of course," the 44-year-old...

UK critics have lashed Diana, the biopic starring Naomi Watts as Princess Diana, pouring scorn on the performances, screenplay and Oliver Hirschbiegel.s direction.
The film, which opens in Australia on October 10 via the Becker Film Group, was almost universally panned after its world premiere in London on Thursday night.
Stephen Jeffreys. screenplay based on the Kate Snell book Diana - Her Last Love charts the two years leading up to her death in 1997, focusing on her affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews).

But the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, she has died another awful death. This is due to an excruciatingly well-intentioned, reverential and sentimental biopic about her troubled final years, laced with bizarre cardboard dialogue . a tabloid fantasy of how famous and important people speak in private.

Starring as the People's Princess in "Diana" will undoubtedly prove to be a crown jewel in Naomi Watts's already impressive career, especially now that the biopic has scored a prime Oscar-baity November release date. However, Watts didn't sign on without some reservations, especially given the intimate nature of the film.
Watts was especially worried about the reaction of Diana's two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. (Let's not even think about what the Queen Mum and her Corgis will have to say about it.) The actress told UK's The Sunday Times, "There was actually quite an eerie moment in London when I did see Prince William in a restaurant, and I got very nervous, because if I caught his eye, I didn't want to interpret a look and think he had a negative feeling about this idea, so I made sure not to look." Finally eOne has stepped up and set a limited, November 1 release date for Diana, their Princess Di movie starring Naomi Watts in the title role, perhaps to take advantage of the small controversy that started around the film just last week. The film, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall), professes to take audiences into the private realm of the Princess of Wales, Diana (Watts) during the last two years of her life. The primary topic is her secret love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews) and the real Khan doesn't seem too impressed with what he sees. According to The Telegraph, Khan insists the film does not tell the whole story saying award-winning playwright Stephen Jeffreys' screenplay is "completely wrong". He addds, "It is based on gossip and Diana's friends talking about a relationship that they didn't know much about, and some of my relatives who didn't know much about it either.

Starring two-time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts (clearly hoping for a third here), the Oliver Hirschbiegel-directed film looks at the last two years of Diana's life and her relationship with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). The film comes from a screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys, inspired by the book "Diana: Her Last Love," by Kate Snell. As described by EOne: "The film is a window into the tumultuous, change-filled period from 1995-1997 in the wake of Diana’s shattering divorce from Prince Charles and at the moment when she stood on the cusp of a different life, evolving into a global humanitarian, mastering her fame and becoming her own woman." It would seem Oliver Hirschbiegel's Diana aims to be big in the UK and Japan as those are the only two territories the film is getting any kind of marketing as it has, more or less, skipped the fall festival circuit with a single appearance at the Zurich Film Festival planned. I'm not sure of eOne knows this, but if a run at the Oscars is what you're looking for you might want to make sure a film such as this has a big appearance closer to the U.S. Just my suggestion. Still undated domestically, Diana takes audiences into the private realm of one the world's most iconic and inescapably public women -- the Princess of Wales, Diana (Naomi Watts) -- in the last two years of her life. Juliet Stevenson, Naveen Andrews, Douglas Hodge and Geraldine James co-star Hirschbiegel directs from a screenplay by award-winning playwright Stephen Jeffreys,...

Turns out it's no easy feat to play one of the most controversial and iconic figures in recent history. But Naomi Watts loves a challenge, which is exactly why she accepted the titular role in "Diana," the upcoming biopic about the late Princess of Wales.
"There was a lot of hesitation on my part before I agreed to do it," the actress tells the Daily Mail. "Obviously I was taking on one of the most famous women of my time and an awful lot of pressure comes with that. ... But then I also knew that the exciting roles, the best roles, come with a risk. In the end I decided that I couldn't not do it."
To prepare for the film, which chronicles Diana's secretive two-year relationship with British-Pakistani heart and lung surgeon Hasnat Khan, Watts "did more research ... than I've ever done before."
Naturally, that proved to be a serious challenge.

I currently have Naomi Watts in my #1 slot on my Best Actress prediction charts for the 2014 Oscars for her role as Princess Diana in eOne's Diana and today the studio sent over the picture you see above along with the first trailer for the film, which is merely a 60-second montage of images, but it looks like a good start as far as I'm concerned as Naomi Watts certainly seems to fit the role. We’ve just been sent the press release and the first official image of Naomi Watts playing Princess Diana which seems to have changed its name from Caught in Flight to now simply ‘Diana‘ which seems to make a lot more sense.
Diana is a compelling portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales during the final two years of her life. It charts how finding true personal happiness allowed her to achieve her defining successes, as she evolved into a major international campaigner and humanitarian.Check out the image below and press release below that. Portrait of a Princess is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel who also directed Downfall and is based on a screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys. Joining Naomi Watts will be fellow Brits Naveen Andrews as Dr Hasnat Khan, Douglas Hodge and Juliet Stevenson.
This fab new photo was taken by Laurie Sparham and the look of Watts is rather uncanny.
