Fans of the “I Love You, My Child, But You’re Really Creeping Mommy Out Right Now” subgenre have a treat in store with Daina Reid’s “Run Rabbit Run,” which hails, like a couple of other notable, similarly-themed horrors, from Australia. Indeed, the top-hatted shadow of Jennifer Kent’s “The Babadook” and the matrilineal mayhem of Natalia Erika James’ “Relic” — two other debuts by Aussie women that premiered in Sundance’s Midnight section — loom large here, as do other breakouts like “Hereditary,” “Goodnight Mommy” and even “The Orphanage.” Too large, possibly, for Reid’s film to fully escape a sense of diminished returns on its motherhood-is-madness, is-she-protecting-or-is-she-projecting and grief-is-a-ghost ideas.
Yet what it lacks in thematic newness, “Run Rabbit Run” makes up for in the sophistication of its moment-to-moment scarifying and its performances from Sarah Snook and outstanding newcomer Lily Latorre, as mother and daughter respectively. Between them, Reid...

‘The Furnace.’
Roderick MacKay’s debut feature The Furnace has been hailed as a compelling, ambitious and meticulously researched exploration of a little-known slice of Australian history following the world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
Critics praised the performances of Egyptian actor Ahmed Malek as Hanif, a wide-eyed young Afghan cameleer, and David Wenham as a shifty gold prospector.
DOPs Michael McDermott and Bonnie Elliott’s camerawork was lauded for capturing the ancient landscapes of the Western Australian interior, as were Mark Bradshaw’s score and production designer Clayton Jauncey’s recreation of the gold rush town Mount Magnet in its infancy.
Produced by Timothy White and Tenille Kennedy, the 1890s drama co-starring Jay Ryan, Erik Thomson, Kaushik Das, Baykali Ganambarr, Trevor Jamieson, Mahesh Jadu and Samson Coulter screened in the festival’s Horizons section on Saturday.
The plot follows Malek’s Hanif and Wenham’s Mal who...

One of the cutest moments of the 2019 Emmy Awards came courtesy of Ben Whishaw. During his candid acceptance speech for the award for best supporting actor in a limited series or movie for his role in A Very English Scandal (where he mentioned at least a couple of times how hungover he was), a touching moment came when he thanked his partner, Mark Bradshaw, for "his love and support" and "keeping [him] sane." While Bradshaw was there in the "supportive partner" role tonight, he's also a successful composer for film and television.
It was, in fact, Bradshaw's music career that first introduced him to Whishaw. Back in 2009, Bradshaw was brought on to compose the score for Bright Star, a period drama romance about poet John Keats and his love Fanny Brawne. Whishaw was starring as Keats, and the duo apparently hit it off while working on the movie. Three years later,...

Ben Whishaw appeared subdued as he accepted his Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for portraying Norman Scott, the disgruntled ex-lover of Liberal Parliament Member Jeremy Thorpe, in A Very English Scandal.
Scott turned on Thorpe and started making threats when he broke up with him, but then Thorpe allegedly tried to have Scott killed.
The actor, who came out in 2014, did not take the win as an opportunity to make a statement about Lgbtq characters and casting as he did earlier this year at the Golden Globes, but rather apologized for being hung over because his agent had taken him out for drinks.
He also thanked nominated series star Hugh Grant (“I hope you get one of these”), director Stephen Frears, writer Russell Davies and his partner Mark Bradshaw for “his love and support and for keeping me somewhat sane.”...

Most of us remember The Crucible, and its tale of persecution during the 17th-century Salem witch trials, from high school English class. Arthur Miller originally intended the play as a parable about Communism and the Red Scare in 1950s America, but in the current Broadway revival of the classic – which ends its critically praised run on July 17th – we get supernatural effects, a live-wolf look-alike and gruesome makeup, so that the story crackles with contemporary insight. Audiences can detect associations with the way immigrants are treated as potential terrorists and...

The film has now been invited to the Berlinale, and Englert won't miss it.
The Boyfriend Game was shot over two days at the Colo River in Nsw, and is about "two little girls, friends, playing a game they've created at a farmhouse in the Australian bush. They discover difficulties when they become competitive over one of their imaginary boyfriends"..

Ben Whishaw has told Marie Claire that he initially turned down voicing Paddington Bear when asked to replace Colin Firth.
The actor said that he wasn't initially convinced he should voice the iconic character on the big screen.
"I said no the first time," Whishaw recalled. "I just thought, I'm not very good at doing voices, I can't do it and I don't think I'll be right for it'... Paul King (who directed The Mighty Boosh) sent me a very sweet note asking me to reconsider.
"I had imagined I'd just be putting my voice to something, but they actually filmed my face and mouth and took footage of my movements, so there was a blending of me and the bear.
"I tried a few different things with my voice and over time realised that it should sound like I do in real life."

It was once considered career suicide, with the MGM golden boy Mickey Rooney quipping "I never knew anything about anyone being gay in Hollywood when I was working in the studios. They weren't in closets, they were in safes." But a growing number of high profile actors have 'come out' recently with relatively little fuss. The latest is Bond actor Ben Whishaw, who confirmed that he married his partner, composer Mark Bradshaw, last year. Few were surprised, especially as he told Out magazine back in 2011: "As an actor you have total rights to privacy and mystery, whatever your sexuality, whatever you do."...

It’s exciting watching the journey of future superstars, and that’s what we’ve had the pleasure of doing with English actor Ben Whishaw. We’ve had our eye on him from his earliest roles in Perfume and Brideshead Revisisted (and wish we could have seen his award-nominated performance on stage in Hamlet), to his higher profile turn as Q in Skyfall and the vastly underrated Cloud Atlas.
We were also delighted, and proud when he confirmed that he was gay a few months ago, and congratulate him on his civil partnership with Australian composer Mark Bradshaw.
Ben’s star is just beginning to rise (he made a big debut on the just released UK Pink List, and while for some reason he didn’t make our Hot 100 this year, we fully expect him to make a splash on next year’s list), and we look forward to seeing...

Big congratulations go out to the new Q in the 007 film franchise, Ben Whishaw. A year after he quietly entered into a civil partnership with Australian composer Mark Bradshaw, the "Skyfall" actor officially has come out as gay and is confirming their relationship.
"Ben has never hidden his sexuality, but like many actors he prefers not to discuss his family or life outside of his work," Whishaw's spokesman tells the Daily Mail. "Due to speculation, I can confirm that Ben and Mark entered into a civil partnership in August 2012. They were proud to do so and are very happy."
Considering the Queen legalized gay marriage recently, Whishaw and Bradshaw can now officially tie the knot. The couple met on the set of Jane Campion's 2009 film "Bright Star." In it, Bradshaw scored the music and Whishaw played poet John Keats.

Whishaw & Bradshaw
Here's a cute trivia note that too few sites will mention: Bradshaw scored Whishaw's rare romantic leading man gig in Bright Star (2009) where the actor played the poet John Keats. Good god that movie is underappreciated... except for here at Tfe where it won multiple nominations in its year. If it brought them together it's even more lovely in retrospect.
Bradshaw recently scored the Emmy-nominated miniseries Top of the Lake (it's mesmerizing - watch it!) and Whishaw will next be seen in Terry Gilliam's Zero Theorem, the next James Bond film reprising his "Q" role, and possibly a Ron Howard picture called In the Heart of the Sea. ...

Mark Bradshaw has signed on to score the upcoming World War II drama Resistance. The film based on a novel by Owen Sheer takes place in an alternative 1944, where Russia has fallen to Nazi Germany and the D-Day landings have failed. The story centers on a group of women in an isolated Welsh village who wake up to discover all of the their husbands have mysteriously vanished. The movie is directed by Amit Gupta and stars Andrea Riseborough, Tom Wlaschiha and Michael Sheen. Richard Holmes (Waking Ned Devine, Eden Lake) and Amanda Faber are producing. Rachel Portman was originally attached to score the project as reported by the Hollywood Reporter last fall, but had to leave the production due to a scheduling conflict. Bradshaw is best known for his music for Jane Campion’s Bright Star starring Abbie Cornish, Ben Whishaw and Paul Schneider, which received an Academy Award nomination...

Remember that one year (2001) when the list-happy AFI (American Film Institute) decided to compete with the Globes and the Oscars in year end prizes? No, that didn't last long. But there's another AFI, The Australian Film Institute, that has been around for a long time and is in no such danger of being a one-off. This year, they're all about the amazing family crime drama Animal Kingdom which they awarded with a record breaking 18 nominations. Sure, the film is in danger of being way overhyped for people who are coming to it late (which is just about everyone given the sorry state of international distribution for dramas of virtually any kind) but for those who can slough off the "omg" raves, I guarantee you'll think it at least an insinuating and well executed crime drama.
