One of the horror movies on our radar for SXSW 2024 this month is the Australian film Birdeater, which has received an official teaser trailer ahead of the festival this week.
Birdeater, which premiered at the Sydney Film Festival and earned the Audience Award for Australian Narrative Feature, is set to make its International Premiere at SXSW.
Directed by the filmmaking duo Jack Clark and Jim Weir, Birdeater is said to be a “horror thriller that represents a visually striking and daring debut from this Australian duo.”

Dark Star Pictures has acquired distribution rights in North America for Australian gay love story “Lonesome,” directed by Craig Boreham. Following its world premiere at the Seattle Intl. Film Festival in April, San Francisco’s Frameline Film Festival will present the film on June 20. The film is also screening at the Guadalajara Intl. Film Festival, which runs June 10-18.
The deal was made with Berlin-based sales outfit M-Appeal, which has already secured distribution for the film in the U.K. and Ireland (Peccadillo Pictures), France (Optimale Distribution), multi-territory Europe (Cinemien/OUTtv Europe), and Poland (Tongariro Releasing).

Focus Media is set to produce “Eve After The Fall,” a contemporary drama set against the backdrop of the Zagreb earthquake of 2020. The female-driven film will mark the directorial debut of well-known Croatian actor-writer Lana Barić (“Tereza37”).
Named after the titular Rodin sculpture, “Eve After The Fall” is set to star Olga Pakalović (“Halima’s Path”) as Zana, a woman who reevaluates her life after a natural disaster and attempts to start it all over again. Irena Marković is producing the film at Focus Media.

Queer Screen has put $15,000 towards three projects – feature films Closing Night and Lonesome, and TikTok series Scattered – via its completion fund.
Established in 2016, the fund supports Australian Lgbtiq+ filmmakers and storytellers whose work is consistent with the vision and mission of Queer Screen. Since its inception, it has supported 20 projects with $102,000.
