Dabney Coleman made anything he appeared in better. That was the consensus as news reached his show business colleagues of his death today at 92.
Words like “perfect,” “exceptional” and “the best” were all used to describe Coleman’s body of work, which carried many of the projects he appeared in. As Richard Roeper said of Coleman’s frequent villain roles, “He was the best at playing guys who were the worst.”
Some of the early reactions:
Dabney Coleman had the perfect character actor name, the best character actor mustache, the classic character actor chops. He was the best at playing guys who were the worst. pic.twitter.com/he2RGmsFSp

Shudder Acquires Official Fantasia Festival Selection Glorious: "Shudder, AMC Network’s premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has acquired rights to Rebekah McKendry’s Glorious starring Ryan Kwanten and Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons. The film, an official selection of the Fantasia International Film Festival, will be available exclusively on Shudder in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, August 18.
Said Craig Engler, general manager of Shudder, “With Glorious, Rebekah brings Lovecraftian horror to a place it’s never been seen before: a rest stop men’s room. She and her all-star cast have created an inventive and original cosmic horror that manages to be both darkly hilarious and profoundly personal.”
“For years, I had been searching for a project that would let me show my preferred artistic style - that would let me be absurdist, sardonic, transgressive, and weird. And Glorious gets really f’n weird.

Exclusive: Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) and Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) — also nominated this year for Being The Ricardos — have been set to star in supernatural horror movie Glorious, we can reveal.
The film, which is quietly nearing completion, has an intriguing premise. Kwanten plays a young man who is spiraling out of control after a bad breakup. His situation worsens after he finds himself locked inside a rest stop bathroom with a mysterious figure (J.K. Simmons) speaking to him from an adjacent stall. As he tries to escape, he realizes he is an unwilling player in a situation bigger than he could have imagined.
Amp International has launched sales on the project during the virtual EFM. Rebekah McKendry (All The Creatures Were Stirring) directs from a script by Todd Rigney, Joshua Hull and David Ian McKendry.

You can’t really talk about indie horror without talking about Dr. Rebekah McKendry. She has become synonymous with the genre, first as a journalist, then as a podcaster, and now as a filmmaker with multiple shorts and two features, All the Creatures Were Stirring and Psycho Granny, to her credit so far. She is what those douchier than myself might refer to as a “tastemaker” or an “influencer”—a lifelong fan of horror with a large platform from which to educate and enlighten. She’s a rare breed in the genre, both a creator and professional appreciator, deeply entrenched in all aspects of the genre. She has been and continues to be one of horror’s greatest champions.
Her debut feature, All the Creatures Were Stirring, a Christmas horror anthology co-written and directed alongside her husband David Ian McKendry, might as well be called “Indie Horror: The Movie,” seeing...

Originally released in 2018, as far as I know All The Creatures Were Stirring is the second ever Christmas horror anthology movie, with the first being the highly entertaining A Christmas Horror Story.
This one has five segments and one encompassing segment which begins and ends the film as well as linking each other segment. In this we see a man and woman who are kind of on a date at a local theatre. They meet outside and once inside are introduced to a couple of strange characters until they are eventually seated to watch the show. The first part of the show then leads into the opening segment The Stockings Are Hung.

Turning a much loved literary classic into a TV series isn’t easy, but Netflix is onto a winner with Mike Flanagan…
Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting Of Hill House might be the best ghost story ever written. Published in 1959, it’s about a makeshift team of paranormal investigators moving into the legendarily haunted Hill House in an attempt to document and analyse the supernatural phenomena manifesting within its walls – but it’s really about grief, and guilt, and repression, and the desperate longing for a home. It’s beautifully constructed, impeccably written, and genuinely terrifying.
See related Doctor Who: Extremis geeky spots and Easter eggs
And now it’s being turned into a 10-part Netflix series.
It’s a story that, at least on the surface, appears to lend itself quite easily to screen adaptations, and in fact it’s already been turned into two films: The Haunting (1963) and,...

While it may not necessarily be a horror movie, Teenage Cocktail popped up on my radar due to the talent involved. Co-writer/director John Carchietta, who previously worked on the underrated The Hills Run Red, makes quite a statement with his directorial debut that hypnotically explores the dangers of Internet culture and how some teenagers’ narrow senses of judgment can have huge ramifications.
Teenage Cocktail follows Annie (Nichole Bloom), who has recently been transplanted into a new neighborhood and school, causing her to feel unsure about who she wants to be and how she fits into the world. She’s immediately drawn to her fellow classmate Jules (Fabianne Therese), a bit of a free spirit who flitters about with a sense of reckless abandon (ah, to be young!). The pair start off as friends, but over time their relationship evolves into something more intimate than sleepover buddies, and we see...

One of the biggest surprises of 2013 for me was Contracted – Eric England’s tight little body-horror flick about a “Patient Zero” who hopes to destroy mankind by spreading a deadly Std. Weaker stomachs might have to watch most of the action through interwoven fingers, but as a contagion thriller, England’s style ensures that societal horrors come first and foremost.
Fast-forward two years, and we’re here to discuss Contracted: Phase II, a sequel that doesn’t see any involvement from England himself. Today, Contracted: Phase II is set to infect theaters and VOD courtesy of IFC Midnight. Directed by Josh Forbes, the sequel stars Matt Mercer (who appeared in the original Contracted), Morgan Peter Brown, Anna Lore and Marianna Ralka. In the first film, audiences were introduced to a savage infection that caused the mental and physical breakdown of one of the infected and for Contracted: Phase II, the implications of the virus (and the mysterious man behind it all) are revealed to be something much bigger and more dangerous than anyone was ever prepared for.
Daily Dead recently chatted with Forbes about his involvement in Contracted: Phase II and discussed the pressures of directing a sequel, collaborating with the film’s stars and much more.
I'm curious, just because I noticed this was your first feature, how did you end up getting involved with Contracted: Phase II? Was this something that was brought to you?...

Featuring a plot that amplifies people’s fears of STDs, Eric England’s Contracted has done well on VOD, with its potent combination of unsettling decomposition and keen social commentary attracting a steady stream of viewers. The home media response to Contracted has been successful enough for IFC Midnight to move forward with a sequel, Contracted: Phase II, which will follow both familiar and new faces.
Deadline reports that IFC Midnight is developing Contracted: Phase II with Josh Forbes in the director’s chair. The sequel will mark Forbes’ first feature film, working off a script by Craig Walendziak.
Eric England, who wrote and directed Contracted, is not attached to the sequel. The follow-up film will see the return of characters Riley (Matt Mercer) and Alice (Alice Macdonald). In addition to Mercer and Macdonald, the sequel’s cast includes Peter Cilella, Marianna Palka, Morgan Peter Brown, Laurel Vail, Anna Lore and Suzanne Voss.

Exclusive: After seeing strong VOD returns from last year’s Std horror flick Contracted, IFC Midnight is springing for its sequel, Contracted: Phase II. Writer-director Eric England’s first film was an original low-budget take on the zombie genre about a young woman in rapid decay after picking up an icky, mysterious disease from a one-night stand. The sequel continues where Contracted left off, as newly-infected Riley (Matt Mercer) scrambles to track down those responsible for the outbreak and discovers a larger conspiracy that threatens to infect the world.
England’s not involved in the follow-up, which is already in production in La; he’s currently filming indie comedy Get The Girl. Instead, BoulderLight Pictures producers J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules tapped new blood to helm the sequel, hiring newcomer Josh Forbes to direct from a script by first-timer Craig Walendziak.

Tricia’s husband Daniel has been missing for seven years. Her younger sister Callie comes to live with her and helps her find the strength to finally declare him legally dead ‘in absentia’. As Tricia tries to move on with her life she is haunted by terrifying visions while her sister finds herself drawn to an ominous tunnel near the house which is linked to other unexplained disappearances. It becomes clear the tunnel holds a dark secret, something lies in the shadows and Daniel may be suffering a fate far worse than death.
Absentia is, for all intents and purposes, a movie about loss – the loss of a loved one, the loss of control… It also deals with the dark side of life, the side of which you’d don’t always...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films.
Director/writer: Mike Flanagan.
Cast: Katie Parker, Courtney Bell and Dave Levine.
Some viewers may experience strangeness while watching Absentia. After a while, the same synthesizer sounds and monotone guitar beats will either mesmerize audiences or cause auditory hallucinations. This background music sounds like it is from one of Brainwave Mind Voyage’s psycho acoustic products. After a while, a few may wonder if that tired feeling will ever wear off.
The soundscape created for this film is strangely appropriate. In a tale about Tricia (Courtney Bell) trying to cope with the disappearance of Danny (Morgan Peter Brown), her husband, the music is like a psychological journey of the experiences to come. That is especially important when she is often seen meditating. With a Tibetan singing bowl sitting next to her, she should have used it more often.

Writer / director Mike Flanagan is prepping for his next feature, Scare Dares. The man behind Absentia returns in what he calls "a love letter to horror." "It's my 'thank you' to King, Argento, Shimizu, Del Toro and of course, Lovecraft," Flanagan said. Interestingly, Flanagan is stacking the cast with Absentia stars Justin Gordon, Morgan Peter Brown, Courtney Bell, Katie Parker, and Dave Levine in order to ensure a film that is terrifying while working with actors he knows and trusts. Hopefully this won't serve to confuse audiences into thinking this is an Absentia sequel. Hit the jump for the full poster and synopsis. Official synopsis: "Scare Dares tells the...

Words alone cannot begin to describe how happy we are about the following bit of news. Around here we've been raving about a little indie movie called Absentia, which is pretty damned spooky. Now, once again... the little guy makes good!
According to Variety, Fallback Plan Productions is ramping up Scare Dares, a sub-$1 million indie chiller with an inventive mobile app tie-in that aims to start shooting later this year.
Scare Dares reteams Mike Flanagan, writer/director of micro-budget horror pic Absentia, with the same producers and much of the same cast, including Courtney Bell, Katie Parker, Justin Gordon and Morgan Peter Brown.
Scare Dares, described as an "adrenalized homage to classic horror films," centers on a smartphone app that leads users to known areas of paranormal phenomena in central California. Things go wrong when a group of estranged friends kick off a reunion weekend by visiting ghostly hotspots and engaging in occult dares.
