You might not know her name, but Jessica Gunning has been part of some of the best, most ground-breaking British film and TV of the last decade. Born in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire ("... where Last of the Summer Wine was filmed," she says. "Claim to fame!"), Gunning later joined the National Theatre where she shared the stage with Hayley Atwell.
Unforgettable moments in Doctor Who (destroyed by CGI munchkins), Fortitude (by far some of the icy drama's grisliest scenes) and BBC Three comedy Top Coppers have confirmed her place as an exciting talent.
1. Doctor Who (2008)
Gunning brought charm to the part of poor Stacey Campbell, who met a darkly comic fate - she melted and was replaced by a pack of adorable Adipose, marshmallow-like blobs that posed an unlikely threat to Earth.
"You do really feel when you're doing Doctor Who that you're part of something that's pretty special," says Gunning.

Young TV newcomer Rio Myers stars alongside comedians John Kearns (Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Winner 2014) and Steen Raskopoulos (2014 Edinburgh Best Newcomer nominee) in Top Coppers in new BBC Three comedy series Top Coppers.
Rio (represented by D&B Management) plays Intelligence specialist, technology expert Zak, who just happens to be a 10-year-old boy. He coordinates crime intelligence via his computer (or ‘information box’ as Rust calls it). Everyone is aware that he is a child, but they never acknowledge it and never talk down to him like a child.
Despite being only 10, he talks about life and work with the wealth of experience of a man in his forties, though still drawing on the references of a child. He is a bit of a prankster and isn’t intimidated by anyone.
Top Coppers follows the adventures of cops John Mahogany (Raskopoulos) and Mitch Rust (Kearns), as they attempt to...

The world’s largest arts festival is nearly upon us and a selection of the finest comedic talent around is set to have us rolling in the aisles and wiping the tears from our eyes.
Over the years the Edinburgh Fringe Festival has seen the likes of Steve Coogan, Lee Evans, Frank Skinner, Al Murray and more recently Russell Kane, Doc Brown, Bridget Christie, and David O’Doherty walk away with the the main prize; annually attacking a hotbed of comedic talent.
It is also a great place for rookie and lesser-known comedians from all over the globe to launch their careers and get themselves noticed on the big stage. Past winners of the Best Newcomer award include Harry Hill, Tim Vine, The Mighty Boosh, Tim Minchin, and Sarah Millican, with 2013 Best Newcomer, John Kearns, going on to be crowned best in show just one year later.

A new Superman
2014 looks set to be a big year for comics, and a great year for Grant Morrison, with the long awaited Multiversity due to strike in the second half of the year. The nine-issue miniseries will feature seven stories set on parallel Earths in the DC multiverse, including Earth-23, a world where the majority of the heroes are black, including Superman who is also, secretly, President of the United States. Laura Sneddon

Jack O'Connell
With his trapezoid chin, O'Connell could easily make a tween pinup, but for a tinge of unpredictability – which he gets to exercise to full effect in Starred Up, a prison drama that could be this generation's Scum. Already tabloid-friendly following his relationship with Tulisa, O'Connell is...
