Producers of the upcoming musical comedy Ghost Of John McCain have responded to angry comments made by the late senator’s daughter Meghan McCain, saying that they will again extend an invitation to Meghan and husband Ben Domenech to attend a reading of the musical before it opens Off Broadway this fall.
“We think they will love it, just as audiences have to date,” said producers Jason Rose and Max Fose in a statement responding to tweets made by Meghan McCain earlier this week in which she called the musical – which she apparently has not seen – “trash” and “a gross cash grab by mediocre desperate people.”
As Deadline reported Tuesday, Ghost of John McCain, a musical comedy set inside the brain of Donald Trump, will make its world premiere Off Broadway this fall. The musical, written by Scott Elmegreen and Drew Fornarola and produced by a team that includes political...

As Oscar night fades in the rearview, arguments over who got robbed and who had the nicest dress continue to recede. One story, however, continues to rage on — a backlash (and backlash to the backlash) to the acceptance speech given by Jonathan Glazer alongside producers James Wilson and Len Blavatnik when The Zone of Interest won for best international film. THR has learned that that, even though Glazer claimed to speak for all three of them, he had not run his comments by Blavatnik, according to a spokesperson for the billionaire.
Glazer, The Zone of Interest’s writer-director, said (and it’s important to get this right) that his Auschwitz-set movie “shows where dehumanization leads at its worst” and continued “right now we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and the Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people,...

Joe Biden delivered a fiery State of the Union address Thursday night, made the case for American democracy, reproductive freedom, funding for Ukraine, a fair tax code, and lowering prescription drug prices. He also repeatedly underscored the threat of Donald Trump — whom he referred to only as “my predecessor.”

A Congressional hearing featuring five notable tech CEOs proved to be as combative as advertised. Meta‘s Mark Zuckerberg, TikTok‘s Shou Zi Chew, X‘s Linda Yaccarino, Snapchat‘s Evan Spiegel, and Discord‘s Jason Citron defended their companies’ safeguards for underage users during a four-hour Capitol Hill gathering on January 31.
The Senate Judiciary Committee summoned the five CEOs to speak about child safety on social media. That subject is one of the pillars of the Biden Administration’s tech policy platform; the U.S. President stressed the need to protect minors online during his first State of the Union address.
When the latest Big Tech hearing was first announced, Judiciary Committee leaders Dick Durbin (D-il) and Lindsay Graham (R-sc) cited security and safety lapses that have affected minors online. Those topics came up again at the hearing, which was attended by parents whose children have been negatively affected by social media.

Ziwe has found her latest iconic guest: George Santos.
After teasing a collab with the expelled congressman, comedian and celebrity interviewer Ziwe released her sit-down interview with Santos on YouTube on Monday morning.
Ziwe’s “Znn” interview, a CNN spoof with her own Ziwe News Network, began with onscreen text saying “No congressman were paid in the making of this interview even though George asked three times.” She then listed civil rights icons and asked Santos to say what they meant to him. The list included Marsha P. Johnson, James Baldwin, Harvey Milk and Bowen Yang’s “SNL” impression of Santos — which he said deserves an Egot.
When asked if he would want Yang to play him in HBO’s movie about him, Santos said “that movie is not ever going to happen. That book has no perspective of me or anybody close to me. It’s fucking fiction,” referring...

Political junkies and online video observers should circle January 31, 2024 on their calendars. That’s when the CEOs of five major tech companies — Meta, X, TikTok, Snap, and Discord — will visit the U.S. Capitol to answer questions related to child safety on social media.
The hearing will be hosted by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will grill the assembled execs about their “failure to protect children online.” That’s how Judiciary Committee leaders Dick Durbin (D-il) and Lindsay Graham (R-Sc) described Big Tech’s security and safety lapses in a press release announcing the hearing.
This will not be the first time that tech execs have faced off against a hostile Congressional committee. Representatives from YouTube and TikTok address concerns about data privacy during a contentious 2022 hearing. A few months later, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew took his turn in the Senatorial spotlight as he looked to fend off...

“Late Show” host Stephen Colbert hit back at Sen. Lindsay Graham on Wednesday after he criticized President Biden for not taking action against Russia for a collision between one of its fighter jets and a U.S. drone over the Black Sea.

“Well that’s easy, he would take Russian down by funneling crack into their neighborhoods,” Colbert said. “Educate yourself to that reality.”

Nurse Amy Loughren is shocked when Charlie Cullen, one of her colleagues, is found responsible for the murder of dozens of patients over a period of sixteen years, across two states and nine hospitals, without being charged.
There’s a certain atmosphere present in Tobias Lindholm‘s The Good Nurse that will leave you feeling deeply disturbed and uncomfortable throughout every single minute of its over two-hour running time. Lindholm and screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns have crafted a film that feels so sickening to the point where you can barely stomach it. It’s made even more freaky when you consider the fact that it’s all based on a true story.
The Good Nurse is the definition of a slow-burning crime drama that will leave you guessing at nearly every turn.

Whoopi Goldberg has responded to a critique of her latest role in the new biopic, Till.
The 66-year-old actor stars as Alma Carthan in the drama about the true story of 14-year-old Emmett Till and his mother’s fight for justice after his brutal murder by white men in 1955.
During Monday’s (3 October) episode of The View, while speaking about the importance of her forthcoming film, which releases in cinemas on 14 October, Goldberg took a moment to address a since-redacted comment in a Daily Beast review.

“I don’t really care how you felt about the movie, but you should know that was not a fat suit, that was me.”
Goldberg further explained: “That was steroids. Remember last year?...

The first rule of comedy is make fun of yourself before anyone else can and, in the season opener of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, they did just that.

Rudy Giuliani is appearing before a Fulton County grand jury on Wednesday regarding a probe into former President Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia.
Giuliani was one of the most prominent pushers of the Big Lie that the election was rigged in President Biden’s favor, and in Dec. 2020 did so before legislative panels in Georgia. Giuliani was informed on Monday that he is a subject of the criminal investigation.

When Donald Trump formally declares his 2024 candidacy, he won’t just be running for another term in the White House. He’ll be running away from legal troubles, possible criminal charges, and even the specter of prison time.
In recent months, Trump has made clear to associates that the legal protections of occupying the Oval Office are front-of-mind for him, four people with knowledge of the situation tell Rolling Stone.
Trump has “spoken about how when you are the president of the United States, it is tough for politically motivated prosecutors to ‘get to you,...

Over at Fox News, Laura Ingraham and Tucker Carlson have been among the loudest pro-Russia voices in recent years, and on this week’s “Saturday Night Live” cold open, they celebrated Russia’s Ukrainian invasion with an “all-star” Fox News special.
On the “Fox News Ukrainian Invasion Celebration Spectacular,” from Mar-a-Lago, Ingraham (Kate McKinnon) and Carlson (Alex Moffat) welcomed Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) — who sang “My Funny Valentine” in tribute to his pal, authoritarian Russian leader Vladimir Putin. Also appearing were Steven Segal (Bowen Yang), and Donald Trump Jr. (Mikey Day) with Kimberly Guilfoyle (Cecily Strong).
“We got into a little bit of trouble for all the nice things we said about Russia and the main things we said about Ukraine,” “Carlson,” said. “I kept asking why do we hate Putin? Aren’t liberals in America even worse?”
“Ingraham” noted that she called the Ukrainian president “pathetic.”

President Biden has nominated federal judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to fill the Supreme Court seat of retiring Justice Stephen Breyer.
Appearing alongside Jackson at the White House on Friday, Biden described his nominee as a jurist with a “uniquely accomplished and wide-ranging background.” If confirmed, he said, Jackson “will bring extraordinary qualifications, deep experience and intellect, and a rigorous judicial record to the court.”
Jackson serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a post that Biden nominated her to last year to replace current Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The White House said it was shocked by Sen. Joe Manchin’s public refusal to support Build Back Better after recent conversations between the president and the senator.

Republicans were quick to fall all over themselves to hail Sen. Joe Manchin (D-w. Va.) as a hero who saved Christmas for publicly opposing President Biden’s social spending package. The centrist Democrat said that he “is a no” and will not support Biden’s Build Back Better social spending plan.

Donald Trump just can’t quit trying to interfere in the 2020 election.
As a criminal investigation moves forward in Georgia into his attempts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results, the former president sent a letter Friday to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger that calls the election “illegitimate” and asks him to “start the process of decertifying the election… and announce the true winner.”
In the letter, Trump claims — as usual without evidence — that some 43,000 absentee ballot votes from DeKalb County “violated chain of custody rules, making them invalid.” The...

The case for ending the Senate filibuster rule is based not on simple partisanship but out of concern for American democracy. Partisanship becomes a problem when normal political parties place narrow self-interest so far above all other considerations that the nation obviously suffers as a result. And, in truth, both parties have long deployed the filibuster — the provision in the Senate’s rules that effectively requires a supermajority of senators to guarantee passage of most legislation — when they find themselves in the minority. In normal times, the parties have normalized the filibuster,...

Whatever the true nature may be of the twisted relationship between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, this much is clear: As the world economy teeters, reeling from the dystopian implications of the coronavirus, Putin has decided this is a good time to stick a shiv deep into the heart of Trumpland by starting an oil-price war that could well decimate the oil-and-gas industry in places like Colorado, North Dakota, and Texas. Alec Baldwin brought his Donald Trump impression back to “SNL” for the first time in 2020 for a cold open sketch focusing on Trump’s impeachment trial, such that it was, in the Senate this week. Except this time we got a twist, a la the “Days of Our Lives” parody from earlier this season, “The Trial You Wish Had Happened.”
In this version John Roberts is out as the presiding judge, replaced instead by “SNL” regular Kenan Thompson as Judge Mathis. Yes, the Judge Mathis from TV.
The sketch then spent the next eight minutes running rapid fire through a series of witnesses, with several of the usual suspects appearing: Kate McKinnon as Lindsay Graham, Beck Bennett as Mitch McConnell, and Cecily Strong as John Bolton.

After a week off, Saturday Night Live came in hot with Alec Baldwin returning as Donald Trump for a rally in Albuquerque, New Mexico, or as he put it, “the albacore tuna capital of the United States”. Throughout his rally, he was joined by an interesting roster of Maga supporters — as well as some familiar faces including SNL alums Darrell Hammond and Fred Armisen.
Cecily Strong was the first to come out, wearing a shirt that said “Keem Amarca Greab Agrain”. Trump pointed out the typos to which she said, “This was taken verbatim from one of your tweets, therefore, it’s correct — the words didnt change because you said so, sir!”
After scooting her off the stage, Mikey Day came out on stage as a member of “Bikers For Trump” and pointed out that all that Trump did was “shake down a foreign government to get dirt on his political enemy.

“SNL” this week featured a cold open sketch that saw a pair of surprise appearances from “SNL” alums, Fred Armisen and Darrell Hammond. Hammond was the big surprise, appearing on stage as Bill Clinton alongside Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump impersonation.
Hammond was of course the previous “SNL” go-to Trump impersonator, until the 2016 presidential campaign, when executive producer Lorne Michaels decided to cast Baldwin instead. In a 2017 Washington Post profile, Hammond said he “started crying” when he found out, but apparently he’s gotten over that heartbreak given his appearance on Saturday.
The sketch took the form of a Trump rally in Albuquerque — which Baldwin referred to as “Albacore” — with the bulk of the jokes being aimed squarely at the more unhinged members of Trump’s fanbase, several of whom he brought on stage one by one.

Donald Trump Blasts ABC News After Jon Karl Asks Him About Giving Turkey “Greenlight” To Enter Syria
President Donald Trump, appearing today at a press conference with Italian President Sergio Mattarella, at one point was so irked by a question from ABC News White House Correspondent Jon Karl that he brought up one of the network’s mistakes made earlier this week.
Karl asked Trump, “Even after all you have seen — Isis freed, the humanitarian disaster — you don’t have any regret to giving [Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip] Erdogan the greenlight to invade?”
Trump said that he “didn’t give him the greenlight.”
“When you make a statement like that it is so deceptive,” Potus said. “It is just the opposite of a greenlight.
“First of all,” he continued, “we have virtually no soldiers there. Mostly gone. Just a tiny group. They would have been in harm’s way. You have a massive army on the other side of the border.”

In the cold open to the latest episode of “SNL,” no celebrities showed up to impersonate people like Robert Mueller or Donald Trump. The day might be near when it will be news if an upcoming TV series doesn’t have a podcast to go along with it. For now, add Nat Geo’s “The Hot Zone” to the growing list of series enlisting some audio companionship. The story, which tells of Lt. Col. Nancy Jaax’s (Julianna Margulies) efforts to contain the Ebola virus after its first appearance on American soil, also will be addressed in “American Epidemics,” a Wondery audio series produced in conjunction with the TV show.
Lindsay Graham, the podcast host behind “American History Tellers” and the presidential-themed fiction series “Terms” and “1865,” will head up this new series, which will span three episodes. The second episode of “American Epidemics” will focus on the production of “The Hot Zone,” featuring interviews with Margulies and showrunners Kelly Sounders and Brian Peterson.
“American Epidemics” premieres May 10, with new episodes debuting every Friday.

While “Bohemian Rhapsody” lost at the Costume Designer Awards on Tuesday, it still ended up winning the most precursor prizes of the eight Best Picture nominees at the Oscars. This biopic of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury won with four of the nine guilds at which it contended. It lost with the art directors, costume designers, makeup artists/hairstylists, producers and visual effects wizards.
Two of its Academy Awards rivals for the top award — “Black Panther” and “The Favourite” — did win over the costume designers. These victories in the fantasy and period film races respectively brought their overall hauls to three apiece. “Black Panther” had previously prevailed with the actors and art directors while “The Favourite” scored with the art directors and film editors. They are now tied with “Green Book,” which had wins with the actors, casting directors and producers.
