It's been nearly two years since we last had any news about Mike Le Han's in-the-works feature film debut Merciful but it looks like the project may finally head into production.
Recent news is that Kate Bosworth has signed on to not only star but also produce the movie which has had a title change since we last reported on it.
Written by Brian Scully, Genesis will star Bosworth as Amy, a mother searching for her daughter in a Pa wasteland shortly after a cataclysmic event destroys the moon.

With the exception of the first two entries in the series, the “Hellraiser” movies are pretty much a waste of time for serious horror movie nerds. Some of the sequels are amusing in their own right — “Hellraiser 3″ is a personal favorite of mine despite its numerous flaws — though they don’t come close to matching the original flick. Hot on the heels of Clive Barker’s announcement that he’s working on a remake/reboot is director Michael Le Han’s “Hellraiser: Origins” trailer. While Pinhead sounds a little off, the clip itself is a thing of beauty. This guy definitely understands and appreciates the “Hellraiser” mythos, and it’s evident in every second of the embedded clip. Although Le Han directed the “Hellraiser: Origins” pitch trailer, a lot of the credit goes to special effects wizard Paul Gerrard. In case you were wondering, the guy has worked...

To say that it's been a long time since anything worthwhile has been done with the Hellraiser franchise would quite frankly be a huge understatement. After a string of terrible sequels, Dimension Films quickly slapped together Hellraiser: Revelations a few years back, a film that was made for the sole purpose of the company retaining the rights to the franchise. Dimension's plan for nearly a decade has been to reboot Clive Barker's original film, a plan that fell apart after a series of disagreements between the company and hired talent. It seems that Dimension just hasn't been able to see eye-to-eye with anyone when it comes to a Hellraiser remake, leaving the project dead in the water for many years - that is, until Clive Barker's recent announcement that he will be writing the reboot.

Hellraiser: Revelations (2011) was the latest film in this long running franchise. It was released by Dimension Extreme and it received mostly poor reviews. Filmmakers Paul Gerrard and Mike Le Han want to alter the path of the Hellraiser series of films by introducing a stronger outing titled Hellraiser Origins. Gerrard and Le Han have brought together concept art, costumes and characters together in order to make a more horrifying film. Most recently, they have released a very creepy and stylish trailer for the film, which can be seen below. This teaser trailer is part of a proposal. Gerrard and Le Han hope to make the next film in the Hellraiser franchise. However, Dimension will have final word on any future sequels, or reboots. Based on the clip below, Dimension should start signing contracts and put Hellraiser Origins into development. The concept trailer is truly remarkable, sinister and perhaps even chilling.

Last we heard on the “Hellraiser” reboot front, the story’s original author (and the original movie’s director) Clive Barker is currently writing the script. We haven’t heard who will be directing the film yet when it finally does happen — which isn’t a given, since it’s been years since the movie was first put into development. “Drive Angry’s” Patrick Lussier, who was originally attached to direct, is now off the project. Enter Paul Gerrard and Mike Le Han, who have put together a rather snazzy looking “pitch trailer” called “Hellraiser: Origins” to put their names into the hat. You can check it out below. I’m not sure if they’re both going for the job as a directing duo, or if it’s just Le Han directing and Gerrard doing production designs. Either/or. A couple of weeks ago we got a first look at Mike Le Han's concept art for Hellraiser: Origins, a little passion project he's been working on for months in an attempt to land the job of rebooting the franchise that has gone so badly astray. That poster generated quite a bit of buzz but not as much as this teaser trailer is likely to generate.
It's short but boy, does it deliver the goods. Le Han put this together with the help of some very talented individuals and his vision for the reboot is definitely headed in the right direction. Fingers crossed that this gets some traction.

Originally unveiled in 2012, Paul Gerrard (Wrath of the Titans, Battle: Los Angeles) and Mike Le Han’s “pitch trailer” for their a reboot of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser, entitled Hellraiser: Origins, is set to launch on October 31st; and coming courtesy of the trailers official countdown website and Facebook page, here’s an awesome poster to get fans excited for the prospect…
Paul Gerrard and Mike Le Han [have] produced a teaser trailer to accompany the pitch document which has many more conceptual designs that revision Hellraiser. Paul designed the new look for Pinhead and was production designer on the shoot and Le Han pulled in all of his film resources and directed the teaser on the new Alex 4:3 camera with anamorphic lenses. With a crew of 47 an over 100 bloodied extras, the shoot was completed and is now in the depths of post production with a massive amount of VFX work being undertaken.

It was well over a year ago that we learned that a filmmaker by the name of Mike Le Han was working on a trailer that would serve as a pitch video for a Hellraiser reboot, which he hoped to impress Dimension Films with.
Since not much has been heard in regards to an official reboot of the franchise, aside from persistent on-again, off-again rumors, we couldn't help it that our appetites were whet by Le Han's idea, which brought along with it some pretty awesome concept art.
Though we hadn't heard a peep about the pitch video since we wrote up that news story, today comes word that the video is headed our way, set to debut on Halloween. With the last decade or so producing a string of horror movie reboots, it seemed only a matter of time before Clive Barker’s iconic villain Pinhead would get his own blockbuster rebirth. Recently the folks over at Geek Tyrant have gotten hold of some stunning concept art that could just be the beginnings of a new Hellraiser franchise.
The images themselves were created by Mike Le Han (Mrs. Peppercorn’s Reading Room), and Paul Gerrard (Battle La, Wrath of the Titans), as part of a high concept teaser to help pitch the idea to Dimension Films (who could possibly also use their own reboot of sorts).
The teaser itself is in full post-production mode, so it’s likely going to be a few months before the public even gets a legitimate chance to weigh in on things, but hopefully this will be the start of something terrifying!

If you are a horror fan you are probably well aware of Clive Barker’s 1987 classic, Hellraiser, aptly described as a Hammer remake of Salo, Or The 120 Days Of Sodom, Pier Paolo Pasolini’s unflinching and uncompromised imagining of the results of unchecked power, produced in 1975. Hellraiser, Clive Barker’s directorial debut, was based on his novella, The Hellbound Heart, and was followed by eight sequels.
Dimension Films/The Weinstein Company are now developing a reboot of the franchise and we have some great pieces of early concept art by Paul Gerrard (Wrath Of The Titans, Battle: Los Angeles). Gerrard designed these concepts for a teaser trailer directed by Mike Le Han (Mrs. Peppercorn’S Magical Reading Room).
Here’s the pitch for the potential reboot:

Poor Pinhead. After enduring a terrible reboot, Hellraiser: Revelations, the lead Cenobite's future has been uncertain after Dimension Films' slotted remake played musical directors. Martyrs filmmaker Pascal Laugier was the first name that circulated — and one that excited author and director Clive Barker. Unfortunately, Laugier vanished from the project, which was then shuffled to My Bloody Valentine 3D team Patrick Lussier and writer Todd Farmer. The duo had hoped to expand on the dark mythology about a puzzle box and sadistic cycle of torment, but their involvement also came to an end. Geek Tyrant reports, however, that there may be hope for the horror franchise still. Last month, Paul Gerrard (Wrath of the Titans, Battle Los Angeles) and Mike Le Han (Mrs...

There might actually be as many news stories regarding possible Hellraiser remakes as there are mediocre sequels in the franchise. Many directors and writers including Patrick Lussier/Todd Farmer (Drive Angry) have pitched Dimension over the years to show how they would reinterpret Clive Barker’s iconic vision of hell. Numerous artists and directors have put their stamp on the character of Pinhead and the rest of the Cenobites on screen, on the written page, and in the comic panels. The new artwork seen below is done by by artist Paul Gerrard who is best known for creating art for Wrath of the Titans and Battle: La. Mike Le Han has directed a trailer based on the art to pitch to Dimension. While the trailer is not available for us to see, we can get a glimpse into what it may hold based on the images and description found below.

Last fall, Shock Till You Drop was very fortunate to have exclusively presented some concept art from the Hellraiser remake in development at Dimension Films. What we shared were designs from the Patrick Lussier/Todd Farmer (Drive Angry) pitch with art stemming from FX artist Gary Tunnicliffe's team.
Later, even more designs were revealed, this time from Alex Tuis. Now, more artists are unleashing their Hellraiser-themed pieces onto the Internet, including Paul Gerrard (Battle: Los Angeles).
Where the previously released concept designs revealed "what could have been" - as they were connect to pitches that Dimension ultimately did not roll with - Gerrard's art gives us a peek at "what could be." You see, he aligned himself with filmmaker Mike Le Han to cook up a teaser trailer they will submit to Dimension Films in an effort to score the Hellraiser remake gig. Whether they get the job or not remains to be seen.

One of the most enduring creations of Clive Barker is that of the Hellraiser series and Pinhead, its lead demon/angel/"explorer in the further region of experience." The 7th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival announced 2011's class of short film winners in a standing room only awards ceremony Thursday night. The HollyShorts Best Overall Short Film went to Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room, posted below. Mike LeHan's eerie, sepia-toned film shows the persistence of childish curiosity in the face of a mystery: it's a mix of the rational wondering of Harry Potter and the acquiescent observing of the girl lead from Pan's Labyrinth. Mrs. Peppercorn won $10,000 in postproduction and finishing services package from Company 3. The Best Director Award went to Christian Swegal, the director of the spooky and staggering Statis, also posted below, about an ex-soldier undergoing simulation exercises to recover from post-traumatic stress disorder. Swegal and LeHan are just two in a healthy crop of other winners. Mrs Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room from Black Lake Films on Vimeo. Stasis from Christian Swegal on Vimeo.

Over the last year, I've given quite a bit of attention to Mike Le Han.s short film Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room. First because I was impressed with the trailer and now that I've seen he film, I'm completely convinced that Le Han's debut feature, when it is finally announced, has the potential to be fantastic.
If you too were impressed by the trailer and have been wondering if Le Han's film really does deliver, the time for wondering is over. Le Han has released the film online and we've got it here for your viewing pleasure. So turn down the lights, turn up the volume, curl up with your munchkin (if you have one) and enjoy this little piece of beautiful fantasy.

Last year we had a sneak peek, in the form of a trailer, for a short film that was in the works in the UK. Written and directed by Mike Le Han, Mrs. Peppercorn’s Magical Reading Room showed great promise for the director who began his career behind the camera of tv and music videos.
With the film finished and a few festival screenings under his belt, Le Han was kind enough to share the finished film with me and I’m thrilled to report that this is very much the case of a film delivering on the promises of its trailer. Starring Emily Coggin as the young Eloise, it’s the tale of a girl discovering her history. When her mother moves the family to Black Lake, Eloise, an avid reader, comes upon an old bookstore which holds the key to her past.

Here is a review done by Daniel Sarath from our friends at NapiersNews.com.
Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room is a short film that's gained some tremendous buzz over the last couple of months. Not only has it been brought to the attention of major studios, but there are also plans for it to become a three-part franchise that will rival that of the bespectacled wizard's adventures. We went to the premiere at BAFTA in London to see what the buzz is about.
As the lights dimmed, Kevin Kliesch's atmospheric score filled the room, the fairy tale voice-over of Penny Ryder began and we are thrust into a long tracking shot through the streets of a Cornish fishing town, it became perfectly clear what the buzz is about.
Made on only £31,000, Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room looks absolutely stunning. The production design is good enough to rival even the...

Mark Talbot-Butler oversaw the editing for the film, which was wonderfully done and Stephen Murphy served as Director of Photography. If you read the site you have likely seen us reporting on a cool short film called Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room. We have posted the trailer and posters for the film. I had the chance to interview Mike Le Han the writer and director of the short. Keep reading to learn about Le Han's transition from being a session musician in the early 90's to being the successful writer and director he is today. What made you decide to make the transition from music to film? Way back in the early 90’s after leaving school I jumped right into music, no qualifications, just pure determination. Music was a form of creativity that allowed me to express myself. Shortly after I realised that playing live performances wasn’t for me, I’m not interested in being famous I was more interested in the creative aspect of music, so moved over...

I’ve really enjoyed the updates we’ve been seeing for Mike Le Han’s fantasy short Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room. What I didn’t realize from the first trailer we saw for the film is that it didn’t feature any of the special effects.
I didn’t actually realize that they were missing until today when Le Han kindly sent over a new cut of the trailer which features some of the finished effects. The new trailer is only slightly different than the first and the new effects are nice and add the magical aspect that the first trailer hinted at but they’re not make or break.
The real question now is when do we get to see the full short?
New trailer after the break.

Not so long ago, we were introduced you to director Mike Le Han and his short film (soon to be full length feature) Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room. I loved the look of the trailer which sparked quite a few big name comparisons, and the story which plays in the realm of magic with a touch of darkness around the edges.
It's been a few months since that first report but we're thrilled to be presenting the exclusive first look at the film's poster which, like the trailer, is a little creepy and dark.
So when do we get to see the finished product?
A better look at the poster after the break.
Head to Quiet Earth to see the stills.

Hey gang! Here's a beautiful looking new movie trailer for an upcoming short dark magical fantasy film called Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room. The trailer you are about to watch was directed by Mike Le Han, and it's impressed the right people. The short film that Han is currently working on finishing will now be turned into a full length feature film.
It’s the story of a young girl who gets more than she bargained for when she checks out some movement in the reading room of the shop across the street. There she meets Mrs. Peppercorn who shows her how magical the world can really be. Only it looks like things eventually take a turn for the worse.
The trailer has a dark and eerie feel to it, there's no doubt that some of what we see was inspired by Guillermo del Toro. Quiet Earth reports that "the...

English writer and director Mike Le Han's latest project is a short period film titled Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room, which he hopes to submit for the Bafta and Oscar in 2011. Shot earlier this year, the dark fantasy short is about "a little girl who meets Mrs Peppercorn a shop owner set in a remote Cornish fishing village." The Reading Room book shop has stood empty and untouched for 9 years until Eloise an adopted little girl moves to the village. She doesn't expect what she discovers. QuietEarth reports that Le Han and his wife/co-writer Helen Le Han recently signed a co-production deal with Little Freddie Productions to develop a trilogy loosely based on the short film. Judging from the visuals in this teaser trailer, Han has a long career to look forward to. I can't wait to see more of his work. Watch a trailer for the short...

This is one of those great finds that I feel could eventually be a cult hit, but we really don't know too much about it yet. Quiet Earth featured this teaser trailer for a magical fantasy film called Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room from English director Mike Le Han. It’s the story of a young girl who gets more than she bargained for when she checks out "movement" in the reading room of the shop across the street. There she meets Mrs. Peppercorn who shows her how magical the world can be... The production values in this look amazing, I just hope the visual effects are impressive, too. Check out this wonderful teaser below! Watch the first teaser trailer for Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room: Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room is both written and directed by former musician Mike Le Han, an English filmmaker mostly known for his music...

You may not yet recognize the name Mike Le Han but now may be a good time to get acquainted with it because he’s about to make the leap into full length features and it’s a leap that will very likely land him in sentences which include Guillermo del Toro.
A session musician who made the jump to tv and music video directing, Le Han is currently in the final editing stages of his first short film, a dark fantasy titled Mrs. Peppercorn's Magical Reading Room.
