The “best gifts come with a bow.” Hawkeye gets his own spinoff in the forthcoming Disney+ series, premiering on the streaming platform November 24. In honor of Marvel’s infamous archer, we rounded up a handful of Hawkeye comic books for you to purchase before (or after) the show debuts.
For the uninitiated, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) is a skilled marksman and an ex-villain turned Avenger; his ally is Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a rich girl-turned-superhero. But that doesn’t even graze the surface of their backstory. For more about how they came to be — and why so many fans are rabid for the series’ debut — check below for a collection of comics that created their characters.

Valiant is once again relaunching some of its core titles, including Ninjak, one of its original 1990s heroes.
But after a reboot only three years ago, how does one make a spy action-thriller feel fresh and essential? By making it feel like the book is being written right off of current international headlines and having some of the coolest art around (see the 7-page preview below).
Writer Jeff Parker and artist Javier Pulido are putting the character, a master spy-ninja-freelance operative for MI6 who goes by the name of Colin King, into political intrigue and action when he becomes a secret ...

Marvel is developing a Hawkeye TV series with Jeremy Renner for Disney Plus.
The onslaught of Marvel streaming TV shows continues, and Hawkeye will be one of the plethora of secondary characters getting their chance to shine on the small screen. Variety broke the news that the series will deal with Clint Barton passing the mantle of Hawkeye on to Kate Bishop, familiar to fans of Marvel's various Young Avengers series. Hawkeye will join other Marvel series on Disney+ including Winter Soldier and Falcon, Vision and Scarlet Witch, and Loki.
Hawkeye hasn't exactly had the easiest time of it in the McU. Having been little more than a supporting player in the first two Avengers movies, he was absent entirely from Avengers: Infinity War. It was only the first Avengers: Endgame footage that revealed that he had not only survived Thanos' snap, but had forged himself a...

So far, DC’s Young Animal imprint has impressed critics and consumers alike with its outlandish takes on cult favorite characters, while adding some new ones to the publisher’s expansive pantheon as well. If I could succinctly sum up what I’ve seen from this line to date, I’d say it’s like a marriage between Vertigo and DC proper. Basically, it’s the best of both worlds.
In the past, I said that Doom Patrol could probably be labeled as Young Animal’s flagship book, a statement that I stand by. But while Gerard Way’s modern take on the obscure group does have its appeal, I believe that Cave Carson Has A Cybernetic Eye is one of the more inviting to the curious reader. Yes, it’s quite...

Last month, I read a book called Hawkeye, Vol. 1 . This month, I hit one called Vol. 3. In the annoyingly typical way of Big Two comics, the latter follows directly from the former. (One is a hardcover, which in comics-reprinting circles comes typically a year or two after the paperback and combines two paperbacks together. Yes, that’s the opposite of how we old-time book-industry hands are used to seeing things happen, but it seems to work for the Wednesday Crowd.)
Anyway, at the end of Vol. 1, the two Hawkeyes split up, because comics are all about break-ups and changes and new things that can last for six issues or so. (Spider-Man No More! once again.) L.A. Woman follows the younger female Hawkeye, Kate Bishop, who drives a cool car cross country to the city of the title, where she immediately gets caught up in nefarious doings and skulduggery of her own.

I don’t keep up with superhero comics anymore — I have to admit that. Astro City was probably the last thing in that vein I read regularly, and even that was only as “regularly” as Astro City itself was…and that’s not very. Eventually, I even soured on that comic.
At some point in your life, you either realize that punching people is not the solution to problems, or you become a full-blown psychopath. For all my flaws, I’m on the first path.
All that is to explain why I never bothered to read the Hawkeye run written by Matt Fraction and mostly drawn by David Aja, despite it being pretty much assumed to be the best superhero comic while it was coming out (2012-15). Even if something is the obvious best sushi in the world, it doesn’t matter if your taste for seafood has gone.
But time marches on, and curiosity keeps building. And there’s always time for one more book, especially one that’s a few years old and no longer the hot new thing. So I finally did get to the hardcover collecting the first half of that Fraction-Aja Hawkeye run — eleven issues of that series, plus a loosely related issue of Young Avengers Presents as a kind of flashback.
(That Young Avengers Presents issue comes off very badly by comparison, even with strong art from long-time expert ink-slinger Alan Davis. It’s very much Yet Another Superhero Story, in the middle of a big stupid story that people didn’t even care that much about at the time, with the bog-standard angst and drama and Whining About the Relationship. It’s everything “good superhero comics” usually are, and a major exemplar of why I stopped reading that crap. In a nutshell, it’s a story about costumes being moved around a chessboard, not about people or real relationships.)
The main Hawkeye story, though, is about people. Mostly Clint Barton, the least of the Avengers, whose origin is a bizarre amalgam of Robin I and Green Arrow and whose “power” is just being good at shooting arrows. And who isn’t actually all that good at the living-normal-life thing, for reasons Fraction wisely doesn’t explore — he just takes Barton as the overgrown boy he is, stumbling through his own life like a bull in a china shop, getting into trouble just because that’s what he does when left to his own devices. The trouble here is mostly about a Brooklyn tenement that he semi-accidentally bought (with stolen money from the Marvel Universe’s biggest gangsters), to drive away a low-rent Russian gang he calls the Tracksuit Draculas. Again, his plans mostly don’t work, or don’t work right, and he needs to be saved repeatedly by the women in his life. Which brings us to….
There’s also a newer, younger, female Hawkeye — always have to have a non-cishet-swm person in the costume these days, and pretend that person will “always” be the “real” holder of the shiny superhero title, as if we haven’t seen a million “always” melt away in a million comics. (I think that’s mostly cynical audience-pandering, but it’s hard to tell in individual cases — and every superhero-universe character gets handled by so many people that they turn into river-stones, rubbed down to an essence that no one person intended.) She’s Kate Bishop, and I have no idea why she’s so good at shooting arrows, or why she went into the superhero game — she seems to have as few powers as Barton, and many more options. (She’s some variety of rich girl, as far as I can tell.)
But this is a superhero universe, so dressing up in tight spandex to jump around rooftops and beat up thugs is just what you do. Apparently no other entertainment media exist in this world, so this is the only thing to do to keep oneself occupied.
These are, as I said, mostly low-level superheroics. Neither Hawkeye saves the world, and the globe-trotting is more spycraft than Galactus-defeating. Aja’s art is perfectly suited for that level, and tells the story brilliantly, well aided by Matt Hollingsworth’s colors. (There’s also a two-issue story by Javier Pulido and a single issue by Francesco Francavilla here — both are good, but flashier than Aja and so they stand out too much for my taste.) Aja reminds me of nothing so much as David Mazzucchelli’s classic superhero period, particularly Daredevil and Batman: Year One. There’s a similar grounded-ness, with thin lines that frame often violent action without rationalizing it — keeping it shocking and unexpected even in the middle of a story designed to showcase violent action. It’s strongly compliments Fraction’s similarly grounded writing: both of them are committed to telling a story about people in a real world, moving through real space, whose actions have consequences and who bleed and feel and curse and laugh and wryly shake their heads.
Aja also delights in complex page layouts — or his ability energizes Fraction to create them, either way it’s a strong collaboration — which make the world part of the story, and not just flat backdrops for more punching. An issue told from the Pov of a dog is particularly impressive, and probably hugely well-known by this point.
You don’t need to read Hawkeye. You never need to read any superhero comic, no matter what they tell you. But, if you do want to read about superheroes., this is miles closer to the real world than most.

She-Hulk #12
Written by Charles Soule
Art by Javier Pulido
Colors by Muntsa Vicente
Published by Marvel Comics
She-Hulk #12 ties up pretty much every loose end in Charles Soule’s run while also leaving the character open for more stories by he, Javier Pulido, and company or for another creator to jumpstart their run. This is really the best way a run on a superhero comic should end. The story follows She-Hulk, her surprisingly powerful paralegal Angie Huang (and monkey Hei Hei), and Patsy Walker aka Hellcat as they take down Nightwatch, who has been masterminding the weird and wacky happenings of the comic behind the scenes, with a mixture of brain and brawn. Soule’s writing goes beyond a simple (or convoluted) conspiracy plot to comment on the nature of heroism and villainy itself, and that the path of redemption is difficult and filled with struggle and temptation along the way.

George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road looks so insane on so many awesome levels. It's easily one of my most anticipated films of the year, and it's going to give audiences one hell of an adrenaline rush punch to the face.
DC Comics' Vertigo has collaborated with Miller on developing a couple of books for fans to enjoy. There is a hardcover book called Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists, which will feature art by 65 famous artists that were influenced by the world of Mad Max. And there's a prequel comic that will focus on four of the characters from the upcoming film.
Thanks to /Film, we have the cover art from these publications to share with you. The one above and the one directly below are the front and back covers of Mad Max: Fury Road: Inspired Artists. The third is from the comic Mad Max: Fury Road...

The 2014 Action Hero Power Rankings
Some years are just great for certain genres, and this year was a great one for action. All across the board were films within different subgenres stepping up and delivering great action set pieces and characters. Consider the shot on the revolving tank gun revealing the totality of carnage in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, or the tight line between insanity and sharp focus with the home invasion scene in The Guest, the shot of Chris Evans plowing through several baddies with an axe in slow motion during Snowpiercer, watching Keanu Reeves dispatching thugs with slick gun-fu in John Wick, or literally any scene from the action opera The Raid 2. Take all that together in the same year (!!!!) and it’s clear to see we’ve been spoiled… read the full article.

2014 was an incredibly rewarding year to be a comics reader. Veteran creators, like Grant Morrison, Kurt Busiek, and Matt Wagner continued to churn out some of the best work of their career while new creators, like Noelle Stevenson, Babs Tarr, and Tula Lotay had very strong starts. Marvel and DC published their fair share of events, including Original Sin, Multiversity, Spider-Verse, and seemingly a half-dozen Green Lantern crossovers, but they also took risks with new characters like Ms. Marvel, a mysterious female Thor, and the cast of Gotham Academy. Marvel and DC artists went far away from any semblance of a house style from the tapestry-like spreads of Elektra‘s Michael del Mundo, the Silver Age revivals of Silver Surfer‘s Mike Allred and She-Hulk‘s Javier Pulido, and the stylish character designs and Instagram-style layouts of Babs Tarr’s Batgirl among many others.

It's no secret that women have been neglected in comic book movies. Certainly, only a tiny number of female superheroes have so far made it to the big screen. Female leads are still shockingly rare, and even Joss Whedon only managed one out of six in his Avengers ensemble movie.
Things are looking up, with Scarlet Witch and Gamora coming to Avengers: Age of Ultron and Guardians of the Galaxy respectively, hints at a Black Widow solo outing, and Wonder Woman due to feature in the Batman vs Superman film - although, tellingly, not in her own movie.
It's time that the women of comics got some recognition. Here are our top picks from the many worthy candidates that we want to see in their own solo movies:
Wonder Woman
Who is she?
As if you need to be told. DC Comics's foremost heroine, she is a feminist icon...

Jen Walters is She-Hulk, part-time superhero and member of the Avengers and part-time lawyer, who’s started her own practice with a deadpan paralegal called Angie and her monkey Hei Hei, with Patsy Walker, aka Hellcat, as her investigator. The only trouble is she doesn’t have any clients! That is until Kristoff Vernard walks into her office seeking political asylum from his father, Doctor Doom, the dictator of Latveria and nemesis of the Fantastic Four.
But Us Immigration rules state that someone must apply for political asylum within one year of arrival – and today is the day that deadline expires! With Doombots after the pair, will Jen get her client’s asylum approved in court – or will Doom triumph?
As most readers probably already know, Charles Soule is some kind of super-efficient time manager who works two full-time jobs, writing seven monthly comic titles And runs a law practice specialising in immigration.

Jennifer Walters Is...The She-hulk! A stalwart Avenger, valued member of the Ff, savior of the world on more than one occasion, she's also a killer attorney with a pile of degrees and professional respect. A 7-foot-tall drink of cool, emerald water, she's tough enough to knock out Galactus with one punch (possibly?) and has a heart bigger than the moon. Lawyer. Avenger. Hero. Friend. Jennifer Walters has been called many things – but to most, she’s known only as the She-Hulk! Here’s your first look at She-Hulk #1, the all-new ongoing series written by Charles Soule and drawn by artist Javier Pulido.
Savior of the world on more than one occasion, Jennifer Walters is embarking on a brand new, and no less dangerous mission – opening a new law practice! But juggling her caseload and kicking bad guy butt might be a bit more complicated than she imagines. Not to mention the growing number of supervillains she’s making personal enemies of. Sure she can knock The Thing out in one punch, but this time she may have bit off more than she can chew! And that’s just the start of it. Don’t miss a new beginning for the jade champion of justice when She-hulk #1 smashes into comic shops this February!

This February, She-Hulk makes her all-new Marvel Now! debut in a bombastic new series from critically acclaimed creative team of Charles Soule and Javier Pulido.
Jennifer Walters is an Avenger, member of the Ff, savior of the world on more than one occasion, and has a pile of degrees. Not to mention being 7-feet tall with a right hook strong enough to take out The Thing. But even her big brains and bigger brawn might not be enough for to tackle her full case load and kicking some bad-guy butt.
With a brand new practice, new paralegal, and a mounting number of personal enemies both super-powered and not, She-Hulk may have bitten off a bit more than she can chew…but hey, she just calls that Tuesday.
Look for Jennifer Walters’s Now! debut when She-Hulk #1 hits comic stores this February!

What better time for DC Comics to release Batgirl/Robin: Year One than around the same time they're publishing the Batman: Zero Year event. Everyone is excited to remind themselves of why they fell in love with these characters. The book is made up issues 1 through 4 of Robin: Year One and issues 1 through 9 of Batgirl: Year One.
Writers Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon take the origin stories of Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon and expand upon their motivations for teaming up with the Dark Knight. This helps to get readers emotionally invested in the characters by giving them more depth and visually bringing to life their backstories. It's a blast to get to see the first time Robin fights side-by-side with Batman and how he reacts to his new life as a super hero. We also get to witness the first time Batgirl meets Batman and her early attempts...

Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye continues to be one of the most genius and consistently top quality comics Marvel is putting out. The last couple of issues have been resplendent – Hawkeye #11 aka the Pizza Dog issue, was easily one of the best comics of 2013, telling Pizza Dog’s story from his perspective. With minimal dialogue, the issue was done mostly in symbols that a dog would see the world through, designed to perfection by Eisner award winning artist David Aja.
Hawkeye #12 was another great issue as the comic took the perspective of Clint’s long lost brother, now a homeless man, and told the heartbreaking story of the tough childhood the two brothers shared and how Clint grew up with a chip on his shoulder. Hawkeye Annual #1 continues this trend of non-Hawkeye comics, or at least non-Clint Barton/Hawkeye-focused comics, as this issue is devoted to Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, Clint’s protege (I know,...

As I write this, The Avengers 2 rumour of the week is that Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner in the first movie, is going to be recast – and I couldn’t be happier. Renner was such a flatliner in the Avengers movie that replacing him with someone who has charisma and presence is essential, especially now that Matt Fraction’s reinvention of the character has established Hawkeye as charming, funny and likeable, and brought him to readers’ attentions as a major character in his own right.
Hawkeye, for those who don’t know, is Clint Barton, a member of the Avengers, whose power is that he’s very good with a bow and arrow, and that he uses a range of trick arrows to accomplish various tasks. He’s also skilled at martial arts but, like Black Widow, is essentially an Avengers team member who looks like an ordinary guy...

We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this March. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.8 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant pile of Christmas tinsel since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The first fill-in artist on Justice League, although Gene Ha is certainly no slouch in that department. We also have new writers on Firestorm and Green Arrow, new backups in Justice League and Action Comics, and the DC 52 hits lucky number 7.
Shall we see who is the fariest of them all? Oh indeedy, let’s do!
