Despite Donald Glover’s status as a comedian, writer, actor, and musical artist, it was hard to guess what his first time hosting “SNL” would be like. Based on his creative pedigree, one would assume he’d be given the chance for his voice to be heard throughout the night and that his comedic sensibilities would shine through. But unlike John Mulaney, Glover didn’t have the advantage of working on “SNL” before. He’d also be pulling double duty, both as himself and his musical alter ego (kind of) Childish Gambino. That — the music part — was always the easiest one to imagine, because it’s the one that relies more on the performer than it does the entire “SNL” machine. Plus, everyone could get excited about Donald Glover introducing himself as the musical guest, right?

Donald Glover’s award-winning series “Atlanta” will enter its second — err, “Robbin’ Season,” on Thursday, and we cannot wait to catch up with Earn and the gang. But while everyone and their mother is a fan of the show, there is one demographic in particular who can appreciate the FX hit unlike any other: Glover’s fellow Derrick Comedy alums. TheWrap recently spoke with former Derrick actors Dominic Dierkes and DC Pierson, their director Dan Eckman and the crew’s producer Meggie McFadden, who all worked with Glover for years as part of the internet sketch comedy group they formed at New...

Fans of Derrick Comedy are well aware it’s where Donald Glover got his start. But while the Emmy winner may be the best-known alum from the internet sketch comedy group formed in 2006, it turns out he wouldn’t consider himself the funniest one. In fact, former Derrick actors Dominic Dierkes and DC Pierson, their director Dan Eckman and the crew’s producer Meggie McFadden tell TheWrap that Glover used to insist he was living in the shadow of someone who wasn’t even a member of Derrick Comedy: his little brother, Stephen. Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 1, Episode 7, “Fire in the Hole”
Written by Sean Clements, Dominic Dierkes, and Ivan Raimi
Directed by Michael Hurst
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
On the latest Ash vs Evil Dead, Ash and the Ghost Beaters are one step closer to the infamous Evil Dead cabin that started it all, but first they have to make another bloody pit stop. Last week found Amanda (Jill Marie Jones) finally teaming up with Ash (Bruce Campbell), Pablo (Ray Santiago), and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) after her previous travel companion Ruby (Lucy Lawless) “died”. Of course, anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of storytelling and how TV shows work could’ve guessed that the reports of Ruby’s demise had been greatly exaggerated. Sure enough, this week’s episode, “Fire in the Hole”, finds Ruby rising from the ashes like a phoenix, sans clothing but seemingly unscathed. But Ruby is an afterthought this week,...

Ash vs Evil Dead, Season 1, Episode 2, “Bait”
Written by Dominic Dierkes
Directed by Michael J. Bassett
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on Starz
The premiere of Ash vs Evil Dead left this reviewer a little cold. The tone of the episode felt too wonky, the prospect of sustaining the introduced story over a series of half-hour episodes seemed dubious, and the general creepy but humorous charm of the first two Evil Dead films had given way to the full-blown Three Stooges-esque mayhem of Army of Darkness. So the second episode, “Bait”, being is a vast improvement in every conceivable way is a great surprise and relief . What makes this all the more unexpected is that this is the first episode without Evil Dead mastermind Sam Raimi directing or writing. Has Raimi been out of the Evil Dead game for so long that he just didn’t quite know how...

In D.C.Pierson‘s “The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To,” there’s a boy who can’t sleep and never has to. He’s a freak. A weirdo. That Radiohead song is probably about him, and because he’s got a special power, people in nondescript suits are hunting him down. Pierson is a part of Derrick Comedy alongside Dominic Dierkes and the guy everyone wants to play the new Spider-Man, although it’s been a few years since they’ve put anything out together. Their last big project was the movie Mystery Team in 2010, and while making The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To was announced as a follow-up of sorts, nothing ever came of it, and Pierson got a job at the Apple store in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. "I don't want to achieve immortality through my work. I want to achieve it through not dying." – Woody Allen

The To Do List
Directed by Maggie Carey
Written by Maggie Carey
USA, 2013
The amount of time it takes to exhaust the goodwill one has accrued towards an overqualified and bursting ensemble cast is roughly 70 minutes, if The To Do List is any indication. The film’s high concept and its performers, from Aubrey Plaza to Connie Britton to Alia Shawkat to Clark Gregg, are enough to engender some interest for a while, but eventually, The To Do List peters out, squandering away its likability on a strange, ballsy-for-being-irresponsible message and a muddled third act.
Plaza is Brandy Klark, a cartoonish overachiever who just graduated from her Boise, Idaho high school as its valedictorian, even though most of the kids in her class mock her for her uptight nature and her virginity. Before she heads off to Georgetown University, Brandy is encouraged by her best friends to change up her life sexually,...

Airs on Wednesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
This week’s episode is packed with guest stars as Claire heads off to a school reunion. With Phil playing on Jay’s bowling team, things work out for the best for Claire as she gets to see her ex-boyfriend (and ex-professor) played by Maxwell Caulfield. Annie Murnolo and David Faustino also guest star as Claire’s old school friends. After being booted off the team Phil turns up and surprises her, this leads to Claire admitting that she wanted to look at the life that might have been. Cue another guest star, Maribeth Monroe of Workaholics as the professor’s wife. Monroe plays pretty much the same character but does it perfectly, so Claire realises she is lucky to have ended up with Phil.

Joining him on the golf course is a focused Mitch who is intent on beating his father after months of practicing and “Pepper talks”, and Jay trying to teach Phil. Chloe Moretz hinted for months at a "Kick-Ass" sequel. Jane Goldman, who co-wrote the script with Matthew Vaughn, said the duo probably wouldn't pen the next script, but would oversee the project as producers. And now, Christopher Mintz-Plasse says he'd be on board! With all the rumors and waiting it feels like "Arrested Development" and "Anchorman 2" all over again, but it worked out splendidly for those projects!

If you haven't yet seen Derrick Comedy's hilarious flick Mystery Team, you're missing out on a sorely underrated comedy featuring comedians DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes and Donald Glover from NBC's "Community." Now the film's director Dan Eckman is working with at least one member of the comedy group again as Collider has learned that the filmmaker will adapt Pierson's coming-of-age novel The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To. Eckman co-write the script with Pierson and Meggie McFadden (who also wrote, produced and starred in Mystery Team) and they're shopping it to studios now. Unlike Mystery Team, the film is actually a charming coming-of-age tale that also has flares of sci-fi and fantasy. Here's the official synopsis of the book: A wildly original and hilarious debut novel about the typical high school experience: the homework, the awkwardness, and the mutant creatures from another galaxy. When Darren ...

To Do List or The Hand Job? Which one do you like better? I have no idea, but this ‘hand job’ thing sounds interesting.
So, of course it’s going to be a sex comedy, and of course it will have some great cast!

The To Do List, formerly known as “The Hand Job,” has gotten some new cast members added to its already impressive list of stars, including Aubrey Plaza who plays a young woman who wants to head into college with a wealth of sexual experience under her belt, and so spends her post-senior summer trying to check off items on a sexual to-do list. The latest actors to sign on for the shenanigans are Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson, though no word yet on who they are playing in the film.
Connie Britton will play the main character’s “liberal, free-spirited mother,” Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat are two of her best friends; and Scott Porter will play a guy in a band that Plaza has a crush on. Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson (along with their Derrick Comedy co-member Don Glover) will play lifeguards; Bill Hader will be their stoned boss at the pool.

The tides are about to get stranger for Johnny Depp.
The Wrap reports that Depp is "close to a deal" for a fifth "Pirates of the Caribbean," surprising... well, nobody. The latest movie in the franchise, "On Stranger Tides," just passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, and Jerry Bruckheimer is rumored to be meeting intensively with writers to polish up the screenplay.
We can hardly imagine what shenanigans Captain Jack Sparrow will get into this time, but we're sure the masterminds at Disney have something clever up their sleeves.
In the news after the jump, some major comedians check in to "Hotel Transylvania," a "Zombieland" star thinks the sequel won't ever happen and a brilliant moviemaker signs Christopher Walken on as Zeus.

While these days he’s generally found trying to round up superheroes in the likes of Iron Man and Thor as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson, Clark Gregg is looking to switch things up a little bit, signing on to be part of what can only be described as a sprawling cast for Maggie Carey’s directorial debut The To Do List. Formerly known by its spicier title of The Hand Job, Carey’s script follows a young woman (Parks and Recreation/Scott Pilgrim’s Aubrey Plaza) on her way to college after graduating high school. But the studious, driven girl realises that she’s seemingly lacking in sexual experience and shocks her friends by deciding to try everything once.Carey (who also happens to be Mrs Bill Hader) has rounded up a truly solid bunch of talented types for the film, with Hader, Gregg, Rachel Bilson, Andy Samberg, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman,...

Nobody in their right mind thought that the upcoming Aubrey Plaza comedy The Hand Job would be able to keep its title if it wanted to get wide distribution, so it’s not a surprise that it’s going by a new, less explicit name, The To Do List. ThePlaylist has learned of two additions to the newly-titled movie’s cast, and they’re none other than Clark Gregg and Rachel Bilson. Exact details of their roles haven’t been given out, but they suspect that the former will be playing Plaza‘s father, while the latter is appearing as her sister. Those were apparently the two major roles that still needed to be cast, so that prediction makes sense to me.

The coming of age sex comedy The To Do List, formerly called The Hand Job, has been on our radar since it began to assemble a massive cast of young comedic talent. Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation, Scott Pilgrim) plays a young woman who wants to head into college with a wealth of sexual experience under her belt, and so spends her post-senior summer trying to check off items on a sexual to-do list. The latest actors to sign on for the shenanigans are Clark Gregg (Marvel Studios' bedrock player) and Rachel Bilson (The O.C., New York, I Love You). The To Do List is written and will be directed by Maggie Carey. She's married to Bill Hader, and here's what he had to say about the film a couple months back: It’s about her playing an type-a, studious girl who graduates high school and hasn’t done anything with a guy.

Writer/director Maggie Carey added to the already impressive ensemble cast for her comedy The To Do List, starring Aubrey Plaza as a high school overachiever who pledges to tackle every possible sex act before heading off to college. According to The Playlist blog at indieWire, Carey previously signed SNL comic (and husband) Bill Hader, fellow SNL cast member Andy Samberg, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Connie Britton, Donald Glover, D.C. Pierson, Dominic Dierkes and Scott Porter to the film. Rachel Bilson, last seen opposite Kate Bosworth and Jason Biggs at the L.A. Film Festival hit Life Happens, recently joined the ensemble in a still-unknown role.

One of the consistently great things about Scott Pilgrim vs the World was Johnny Simmons, who didn't get a lot of screen time but still managed to shine as the wide-eyed aspiring bass player Young Neil. He's only been in The Conspirator since, and was announced for The Hand Job. Now he has scored two new roles, in 21 Jump Street and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. That's the order in which he'll shoot the films. (21 Jump Street is shooting right now) but at this point we don't know what roles he has in any of the films. The story behind 21 Jump Street probably goes without saying at this point, as we've covered the hell out of it in the past year. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are cops undercover in a high school, Johnny Depp will cameo (the TV show on which the film is based was his first...

Since the Derrick Comedy group released their movie Mystery Team in 2009, one of the members has gone on to significant fame-- that'd be Donald Glover, breakout star of Community-- one of them has written a book-- that'd be D.C. Pierson-- but the group hasn't done any work as a collective. That's going to change at least a little bit thanks to The Hand Job, the indie comedy that has enlisted Pierson and Dominic Dierkes to join their Mystery Team co-star Glover (as announced yesterday) in the film. That's only three of the five Derrick members, but that's still pretty good. The comedy, written and to be directed by Maggie Carey, stars Aubrey Plaza as a high school girl determined to lose her virginity before she goes to college. According to Variety the Derrick Comedy guys will be playing a trio of lifeguards, and with Bill Hader (also Carey's...

Last year Maggie Carey's film The Hand Job was announced [1], in which Aubrey Plaza would play a high school graduate who decides she needs a lot more sexual experience before college, and proceeds to work her way through a checklist of, er, action items. Yesterday many more cast members [2] were announced and today we have even more, and roles for many of them. Connie Britton will play the main character's "liberal, free-spirited mother," Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat are two of her best friends; and Scott Porter will play a guy in a band that Plaza has a crush on. Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson (along with their Derrick Comedy co-member Don Glover) will play lifeguards; Bill Hader will be their stoned boss at the pool. Johnny Simmons is Plaza's classmate and co-worker, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is his sci-fi nerd best friend. There will be a few more roles cast yet,...

In a recent interview with Collider, Saturday Night Live and Paul actor Bill Hader discussed his upcoming projects for his summer hiatus from SNL, one of which is The Hand Job, a script written and to be directed by his wife, Maggie Carey (Chasing the Dream), and with Aubrey Plaza (NBC's Parks and Recreation) in the lead role. Hader revealed that the indie comedy is "trying to get their funding together" but has already attracted a large cast of comedic actors.
It’s a really cool movie. The cast for that is great. It’s got Aubrey Plaza, me, Andy Samberg (SNL), Donald Glover (NBC's Community), Connie Britton (Women in Trouble), Alia Shawkat (Whip It), Mae Whitman (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), and Johnny Simmons (Scott Pilgrim) is attached to it. I have known Dominic for a long time, through our grade school run-ins at Holy Rosary, he was a grade a head of me but we did play soccer together for a few years. I was never a “friend” of his but we have always been connected through other mutual acquaintances. Parting separate ways for different high schools, college, etc. its amazing how people’s paths eventually cross back over later in life. Mystery Team Directed by: Dan Eckman Written by: Donald Glover, DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes Starring: Donald Glover, DC Pierson, Dominic Dierkes, Aubrey Plaza, Bobby Moynihan, Matt Walsh, Ellie Kemper The acclaimed Derrick Comedy sketch team has reunited to write and produce Mystery Team, a campy throwback to childhood detective stories like The Hardy Boys with bizarre gags and adult humor. Seeing the three performers reunite after reaching the edge of mainstream success, Mystery Team is a satisfying comedy that has potential and momentum to become a cult hit on home video. After premiering at Sundance, followed by a very limited release, Mystery Team can now find its primary resting place on the shelves of loyal Derrick Comedy followers. The Mystery Team is comprised of Jason (Donald Glover), the Master of Disguise, Duncan (DC Pierson), the Boy Genius, and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes) who claims to possess superhuman strength. The team has...

Having said that, the highlight of last week for me was sitting down to catch up with the guys at Derrick Comedy. To be accurate, I got together with three of the guys who make up Derrick. Dan Eckman is the director of "Mystery Team," the feature film by the group that I first reviewed at Sundance 2009. Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson are two-thirds of the on-screen Mystery Team, starring as Charlie and Duncan. In the year since I reviewed the film, we've followed the distribution trials and tribulations (literally in both cases) that have marked the film's theatrical life. I'll say this for them......

Movies from sketch comedy groups can be dicey propositions. The formats aren't really conducive to each other. Sketch comedy can be hilarious one moment, then the next moment it's crickets chirping. If the group is good, they can move on quickly and forget about things. But movies are a whole other monster to tame. what could sustain three to five minutes can be awkward in this new format. Some groups can pull it off, and you get great films like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Brain Candy, or at least Super Troopers. Mess it up, and you're stuck with Miss March.
And there's not a lot on this earth that's worse, cinematically speaking, than Miss March.
Now we have Derrick Comedy, an internet sensation full of gentlemen whose names all begin with a "D". Though curiously, none named Derrick. Whether you find this clever or stupid will help determine...

I want to laugh when I go to the movies. I know my reviews might seem otherwise -- the way I tend to crucify so-called comedies. I'm just picky and subjective. I also really want to support small comedy groups just starting out. I adored Channel 101 when it was kicking out the jams of Lonely Island and some of the other hilarious, brief televisions shows. But the magic doesn't work for them boys in the long form, as I would sooner suffer a broken glass colonic than rewatch Hot Rod or Macgruber. Yet, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who does digital shorts funnier than those Lonely Island boys. Usually, when sketch comedians try to stretch the sketch to fill 88+ minutes, the material feels stale. Knowing this and with a trepidatious heart, I approached sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy's Mystery Team, a twisted take on a group of Encyclopedia...

Chicago – Featuring starring or cameo roles from an actor from all four shows on NBC Thursday nights, “Mystery Team” is one of the funniest movies to hit DVD in the last few months, a great comedy that deserved a bigger audience in theaters but should make for a shockingly enjoyable rental for viewers lucky enough to happen upon it on the new releases shelf.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0
Created by the internet comedy group known as Derrick Comedy, “Mystery Team” is a hilarious riff on the comedy subgenre of the awkward loner not too dissimilar from the world of “Napoleon Dynamite” (although this film is much funnier). The loner(s) in this case are the title characters, a trio of young men who were cute crime solvers a la Encyclopedia Brown when they were seven and still think they can solve any crime for a dime or a fruit roll-up.

In honor of Mystery Team's release on DVD May 25th, Cinematical was given the opportunity to interview three of the five members of Derrick Comedy who made the brilliant independent comedy: Dominic Dierkes, Donald Glover, and D.C. Pierson. I'm particularly interested in the group's rise from being simple producers of short comedy sketches on the Internet to feature film makers and regular contributors to great TV shows like Community and 30 Rock, so there's plenty of talk about carving out a place in the comedy business early on.
However, as you'd expect from a trio who wrote and starred in a film about three friends whose inability to give up their childhood detective agency results in them getting way over their collective head while investigating a double homicide, things get a little kooky as the interview goes on. You should also be warned that some of the material toward the end,...

Ever feel disappointed after hearing great buzz about a film? Well that's what Mystery Team is. It's not a scooby snack of childish deadpan humor but a childish take on humor itself. From time to time, the outside world intrudes in and our "team" is degraded or humiliated, but this just wasn't often enough. If they had made this the entire film, they would have had a winner.
Premise? Three friends have been "detectives" since they were young, solving neighborhood crimes of lost cats and fingers in pies, but they never grew up. Instead, they dress the same, they're in high school, and have the mentalities of a retard. Instead of driving, they ride their bikes and use kiddie walkie talkies for communication. One of them is the leader,...

Calling all amateur sleuths: "Mystery Team" is coming to DVD.
The first feature film by the Internet sensation Derrick Comedy, "Mystery Team" is a comedy following the misadventures of a trio of childhood boy detectives as they attempt to take on a bigger threat. Premiering at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, the movie will be released on DVD May 25 through independent film company Lionsgate.
Meet The Mystery Team: Led by master of disguise Jason (Donald Glover) and backed up by self-proclaimed boy genius Duncan (DC Pierson) and Charlie (Dominic Dierkes), the strongest kid in town, the group solves all the major wrongdoings in their small town, ranging from bullies to missing baseballs. However, now that they're high school seniors, they're not so cute anymore. But when a double homicide rocks the town, Jason is eager to take on his first real case, mainly to impress the daughter (Aubrey Plaza) of the victims.

Mystery Team is making its way to DVD shortly, and I've got a new clip to share. Frankly, I normally wouldn't bother, because the clip is pretty well covered in the trailer anyway, but I'm actually pretty anxious for this one. Also, since this coincides rather nicely with the astoundingly awesome episode of Community last night, I figured I'd go ahead and give you a look. Stay tuned for a lot more Mystery Team, and mark your calendars. Mystery Team garnered impressive critical acclaim with its opening at the Sundance Film Festival. The film stars Donald Glover (TV’s “Community”), Aubrey Plaza (Funny People), Bobby Moynihan (TV’s “Saturday Night Live”), DC Pierson (TV’s “Community”), Dominic Dierkes (TV’s “Parks and Recreation”) and Matt Walsh (The Hangover). The DVD comes packed with hilarious bonus features, including: deleted material, “The Making-of Mystery Team” featurette, a preproduction test scene and more!

Mystery Team
Directed by: Dan Eckman
Cast: Donald Glover, D. C. Pierson, Dominic Dierkes
Running Time: 1 hr 40 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 15, 2010
Plot: Three teenagers are still fighting neighborhood crime as the “Mystery Team,” 11 years after their crime solving heyday has ended. But when a new client brings them their first big case, a murder, it looks like they may have an opportunity to get back on top.
Who’S It For? Fans of slightly dirty, low budget comedies, think Strangers with Candy or The Foot-Fist Way.
Expectations: I really hadn’t heard much about this film, for some reason I thought it would be a pastiche of 3 2 1 Contact’s “The Bloodhound Gang.” However, it’s closer to Encyclopedia Brown growing up without ever going through puberty.
Scorecard (0-10)
Actors:
Donald Glover as Jason: I really like Glover on Community where he plays a high school athlete hoping to coast his way through college.
