Anthony McCarten, the Oscar-nominated writer of “The Darkest Hour” and “Bohemian Rhapsody,” has sold the rights to “Going Zero” to Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers. The novel is described as a high concept thriller. McCarten will then adapt and produce the novel for the screen.
“Going Zero” certainly sounds of the moment. McCarten’s novel will explore such pressing issues as privacy, surveillance, the power of big tech and government overreach. In the book, the CIA in partnership with a Silicon Valley wunderkind have created the ultimate surveillance program known as Fusion.
Ahead of its rollout, ten Americans have been carefully selected to Beta test the groundbreaking system. At the appointed hour, each of the ten will have two hours to “Go Zero”—to turn their cellphones off, cut ties with friends and family, and use any means possible to disappear. They will then have 30 days to evade detection...

ICM Partners has been quite public about trying to reform its own workplace culture. But according to a story published in the Los Angeles Times on Wednesday, working at the high-powered agency can still be a traumatic experience for many lower-level employees.
The article documented a workplace where agents and other supervisors felt free to take out their frustrations on their assistants, screaming at them, demeaning them and making them feel worthless. The story also cited two examples of alleged sexual harassment against non-employees. The overall picture is one that is fairly common in Hollywood — a place where low-status employees are expected to bear the brunt of their bosses’ tirades without complaint.
“What goes on in these agencies, you don’t see in any other industry,” said employment attorney Carney Shegerian. “You don’t see other employers trying to get away with what they do in entertainment.”

A Los Angeles Times expose published on Wednesday alleges that women and people of color have been subjected to harassment and bullying at ICM Partners.
The story spoke to 30 former and current employees at the Hollywood agency.
A rep from ICM told the Los Angeles Times, “Hr does not have any records of such allegations.”
ICM Partners CEO Chris Silbermann had been a proponent of “50/50 by 2020,” a promise — which the agency says that it met — to achieve gender parity in leadership positions.
But according to the LA Times story, almost a dozen women have submitted allegations of mistreatment to human resources department by their male bosses since 2017.
Three of ICM’s board members — Lorrie Bartlett, Jennifer Joel and Janet Carol Norton — defended the agency, saying in a statement that to the LA Times that claims that the company’s promise for 50/50 parity “was an insincere marketing ploy is utterly irreconcilable...

Updated, with details and statement from ICM Partners: A long-in-the-works exposé in the Los Angeles Times by reporter Wendy Lee is up on the paper’s website. The crux of the story is to question the agency’s commitment to diversity and whether a toxic male culture and discrimination continues, despite public pledges to the contrary.
According to the article, “more than 30 former and current ICM employees said in interviews that the company tolerated a hostile work environment, where women and people of color were subjected to harassment, bullying and other inappropriate conduct. Since 2017, nearly a dozen women reported allegations of mistreatment by male agents and managers company wide to ICM Partners’ human resources department or senior leaders, according to interviews with the women and those with direct knowledge of the incidents.”

Agency responds to claims of inappropriate conduct, sexual harassment, bullying.
ICM Partners has become the subject of an LA Times exposé in which more than 30 current and former agency employees said the agency tolerated a hostile workplace culture.
The report cites sexual harassment, bullying and inappropriate behaviour towards women and people of colour, and would appear to contradict the ethos underpinning the ‘50/50 By 2020’ parity pledge pertaining to leadership roles announced several years ago.
One specific allegation claimed partner Steve Alexander exposed himself in a car to a female film finance executive. The article said the executive reported the matter...

Veteran ICM Partners executive Rick Levy has stepped down from his duties as chief operating officer and will transition out of the agency at the end of 2020, insiders familiar with the company told Variety.
Levy added the title of COO to his long-standing role of general counsel in October, following the short-lived tenure of former Tribune Publishing executive Justin Dearborn. He remains general counsel and will work closely with agency chief Chris Silbermann through the end of the year.
Levy, who announced his departure at an all company staff meeting on January 27, is leaving by choice, which an ICM spokesman confirmed.
The COO job was effectively dissolved in January, according to a source, when the duties of that office were split between agency co-presidents Kevin Crotty and Sloan Harris. Levy’s intent to wind down was announced at that time, though word has circulated anew amid the coronavirus pandemic. He...
