MTV Documentary Films has released the trailer for “Pay Or Die,” a documentary about America’s soaring insulin costs that the platform acquired out of this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival.
The 90-minute film, which was executive produced by Sarah Silverman, will open theatrically at New York City’s IFC Center on November 1, the first day of National Diabetes Month. That screening will be followed by a nationwide rollout. The theatrical release of the doc will qualify it for Academy Award consideration. Paramount + will begin streaming “Pay Or Die” on World Diabetes Day – Nov. 14.
Directed by Scott Alexander Ruderman and Rachael Dyer, “Pay Or Die” follows three families struggling to afford their diabetes medications. In 2022 the American Diabetes Association reported that over 37 million Americans – about 11% of the nation – are living with diabetes and 8.4 million Americans rely on insulin to survive. Exclusive: MTV Documentary Films has acquired worldwide rights to Pay or Die, a heart wrenching film about Americans living with diabetes who face a cruel choice: pay the “extortionate” cost of insulin charged by pharmaceutical companies or risk death.
Scott Alexander Ruderman and Rachael Dyer directed and produced the documentary, which premiered in March at SXSW. MTV Documentary Films plans a theatrical release later this year, followed by a debut on streaming platform Paramount+.
“Today, nearly two-million Americans living with diabetes are being held hostage by the pharmaceutical industry, as many cannot afford insulin,” notes a release about the documentary. “Without this life-sustaining drug, they will be dead in days. Access to this drug has become increasingly more difficult, as the cost to patients in America soars. Pay or Die follows families struggling to afford their medications and reveals the harrowing reality of living with a chronic illness in the richest country in the world.

No stranger to controversy, Sarah Silverman loves to ask the tough questions, but this time she may have gone too far. In her new animated adult comedy, Silverman plays an elf who longs to become the next Santa Claus, begging the question: Could the world ever accept a female Santa? Silverman stars opposite Seth Rogen as the portly Saint Nicholas, and the zippy new trailer offers a glimpse of this dynamic duo in action, as well as plenty of other comedy favorites in quippy voice roles.
Beginning with the logline “out with the old, in with the elf — it’s time for the North Pole boys’ club to get a little more inclusive,” the new HBO Max series launched a trailer today just in time for some provocative holiday discussion ahead of the series’ release next week. Silverman plays a purple elf named Candy Smalls, “the highest-ranking female elf in the North Pole.

Emmy-nominated I Love You, America was given a straight-to-series order by Hulu, moving the streamer into the comedy/talk/variety show arena in a big way. In the series, Silverman took a comedic approach to the current political/emotional landscape of the country, tackling the symptoms of why we are where we are today. As part of Hulu’s official description, “With monologues about this very moment coming from her personal point of view, this show aims to venture out of our echo chambers and connect unlike-minded people. The show reunites ourselves with compassion and empathy without missing a comedic beat.

Exclusive: Netflix is going old-school, ordering six episodes of Historical Roasts, a half-hour comedy series from Comedy Central roast star Jeff Ross and Obb Pictures. The project stems from the popular live Los Angeles comedy club show that has been running since 2014. Obb (Kevin Hart’s Cold as Balls) optioned rights to the show and then secured the deal with Netflix which beat out multiple bidders. Production begins this fall and the show launches next year.
Each episode will bring together A-list comedians in period-appropriate garb and character to roast historical figures. No word on the roastees yet, but the live shows have featured everyone from Abraham Lincoln and Jimmy Hendrix to Michael Jackson and William Shakespeare.
“People always ask me who my dream roast would be — this concept allows me to finally roast them all. Plus, I’ll be learning a lot along the way,” said Ross, who anchors...

Comedy Central has handed Jeff Ross’ Roast Battle a third season and has set up a local version of the stand-up format in Mexico.
The reality competition format, pits some of the country’s most vicious comedians against one another, one-on-one in a bracket-style, insult comedy contest with an all-star panel of judges deciding their tournament fate, launched its second series in the U.S. last year and will return for a six-episode run later this summer. Once again led by Ross and referee/comedian Brian Moses, Roast Battle is executive produced by Ross, Moses, Amy Zvi, Willie Mercer, Rell Battle, Rick Austin, and Joel Gallen, who also directs. Jonas Larsen, Christian McLaughlin, Jordan Ellner and Ryan Moran are the Executives in Charge of Production for Comedy Central.
Mexico is also getting its own version, to premiere in July 2018. Duelo de Comediantes will consist of six half-hour episodes with local comedians.

Exclusive: It was one of the most poignant and heartbreaking stories to come out of the U.S. forces’ fight against Al-Qaeda. Air Force Combat Controller John Chapman, mortally wounded, was first thought to have died in the mountains of Afghanistan in the battle of Takur Ghar. This hero who took on two dozen Taliban soldiers and saved 23 Americans was then left behind when Seal Team 6 retreated. Evidence is overwhelming that Chapman survived being hit: After the retreat, military video footage shows a man courageously fighting out of a bunker all alone on the mountain and, among other findings, Chapman’s voice was unmistakenly heard on the radio. A true American hero.
The story of the fight and what occurred has been written in a book and is also the subject of a Newsweek cover story “Honor Guard.” Now management and production shingle Thruline Entertainment has optioned an upcoming book...

Hulu has given an 11-episode Season 2 renewal to I Love You, America, the weekly half-hour topical show starring Sarah Silverman, from Funny Or Die. The new season starts September 6.
The straight-to-series project, which got Hulu into the comedy/talk/variety show arena in a major way, discuss the current political/emotional landscape of the country. Here’s the logline: Serving heady concepts in a big, bready, aggressively silly sandwich, Silverman tackles the symptoms of why we are where we are today. With monologues about this very moment coming from her personal point of view, this show aims to venture out of our echo chambers and connect unlike-minded people. The show reunites ourselves with compassion and empathy without missing a comedic beat.

Sarah Silverman is on a mission.
“I want to get to the root of humanity in this country,” the comedian told reporters Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour.
Silverman, showrunner Gavin Purcell and executive producers Adam McKay and Amy Zvi are still ironing out what her new Hulu talk show, “I Love You, America,” will look like.
But here’s what they do know: “I Love You, America” will be shot weekly in Hollywood and feature an opening monologue, in addition to taped pieces shot around the country. In one early remote, Silverman will sit down with a family in Georgia that has never met anyone Jewish.
“We’re not looking to make them look like assholes,” she said. “We’re exposing the fact that we’re actually the same. We may be listening to two different sets of lies right now.”
