Damian Lewis’s puritanical minister and Andrea Riseborough’s terrorised wife must deal with an unexpected arrival
Stunning views of the Isle of Mull lend much-needed beauty to this sternly overwrought tale of puritanical minister Balor McNeil (Damian Lewis) terrorising his outsider wife Aislin (Andrea Riseborough) on an increasingly deserted Scottish island. When young offender Fionn (Ross Anderson) is dumped on his doorstep, the minister’s perpetual seething enters a new register, so it’s a relief to everyone when he sets sail on a boat full of church pews, leaving wife and incomer to fend for themselves. Cinematographer Ed Rutherford, who worked wonders for Joanna Hogg on Archipelago and Exhibition, skilfully marks the tonal shift from shadowy storm clouds to hallucinogenic sunshine, leaving Riseborough and Anderson to frolic briefly in this fragile new Eden, awaiting the returning tempest. Writer-director Corinna McFarlane counterposes Bergmanesque interiors with gaping exteriors, while Alastair Caplin’s eerie,...

Damian Lewis and Andrea Riseborough play an unhappily married clergyman and his wife in Corinna McFarlane’s camp Scottish affair
Corinna McFarlane’s gibbering Highland melodrama huffs and puffs around the turbulent marriage of none-more-Presbyterian clergyman Damian Lewis and put-upon Andrea Riseborough. Opening to prenatal hyperventilating, it rapidly ascends to the kingdom of heaven-help-us once the Lord places strapping, poetry-quoting delinquent Ross Anderson under their care. Handed a solitary note to hammer away on throughout, both leads come to look terribly silly. A shirtless Lewis (representing “Punishment”) drags a wooden framework across a beach (Christ!). Riseborough (“Forgiveness”) wibbles through a midfilm magic mushroom interlude that finally brings some colour – well, mud – to her cheeks. Considerable camp value, but everybody’s looking for the Tipp-Ex with which to update their CVs.

Best indie video goes to Manchester Orchestra while Spike Jonze named best director – twice – at ceremony in London
Adele, an American film director and three upstarts from Barcelona were among the winners at the UK Music Video awards on Tuesday night. The London gala celebrated the best music videos made in the country and abroad, recognising "creativity and technical excellence" – not just YouTube views.
"Some amazing music videos have been made in the past year," said David Knight, editorial director for the fourth annual awards. There has been "a resurgence of the medium as a creative force", he said, in spite of the "very challenging budgets" of many projects. While the night saw wins for blockbuster acts including Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire and Jay-z and Kanye West, many smaller artists were also rewarded, including the Shoes, Is Tropical and Wave Machines.

Researchers identify command servers behind Google attack.
VeriSign's iDefense security lab has published a report with technical details about the recent cyberattack that hit Google and over 30 other companies. The iDefense researchers traced the attack back to its origin and also identified the command-and-control servers that were used to manage the malware.
The cyber-assault came to light on Tuesday when Google disclosed to the public that the Gmail Web service was targeted in a highly-organized attack in late December. Google said that the intrusion attempt originated from China and was executed with the goal of obtaining information about political dissidents, but the company declined to speculate about the identity of the perpetrator. Citing sources in the defense contracting and intelligence consulting community, the iDefense report unambiguously declares that the Chinese government was, in fact, behind the effort. The report also says that the malicious code was deployed in Pdf files...
