Exclusive: Legally Blonde has become the first big MGM title to spawn a TV series for Prime Video. The Amazon streamer has ordered Elle, a Legally Blonde prequel series. It hails from the film franchise’s star Reese Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine banner, part of Candle Media. The project is being unveiled at Prime Video’s inaugural upfront presentation today where the streamer also is announcing another TV series based on a MGM property, Tomb Raider.
Created by Laura Kittrell, who will serve as showrunner, Elle follows Elle Woods in high school as we learn about the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film. The series is set years before the events in the first movie, which kicked off as Elle Woods (Witherspoon) graduated from college and headed to Harvard Law to pursue a legal career.

Though it was originally billed as a limited series, “The Last Thing He Told Me” is returning for a second season at Apple TV+.
Season 1, which premiered in April 2023, was based on Laura Dave’s novel of the same name. Dave has newly set a sequel novel for publication in 2025, which will serve as the basis for Season 2.

Yvonne Strahovski has landed her next series project.
The Handmaid’s Tale star will lead the cast for Teacup, a horror thriller series at Peacock that counts James Wan among its executive producers. Strahovski will also be a producer on the project, which is inspired by author Robert McCammon’s 1988 novel Stinger.
Teacup will center on a group of people in rural Georgia (replacing the novel’s Texas setting) who must come together in the face of a mysterious threat in order to survive. Strahovski will play a character named Maggie Chenoweth.

Kerry Washington has renewed her overall deal with ABC Signature — and will also continue with the studio’s Hulu dramedy UnPrisoned.
The streamer has picked up a second season of UnPrisoned, which stars Washington as a single mother whose world is upended when her father (Delroy Lindo) is released from prison and moves in with her and her son. The series comes from Disney’s Onyx Collective and ABC Signature; Washington and Lindo are also executive producers.
Under the renewed deal, Washington’s Simpson Street company will continue developing and producing TV projects for ABC Signature. Following a bidding war, Amazon has put in a two-season straight to series order for the half-hour comedy “All Stars” from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine. Witherspoon will star and executive produce.
The series follows a former cheerleader from Daytona Beach (Witherspoon) who goes across the pond to teach cheerleading at a school in coastal England.
“I’ve been looking for a project that brought our Hello Sunshine mission to make women the heroes of their own stories to a younger generation for a long time. When I saw this story, I immediately knew this idea would do just that. The idea of watching an American woman coming to share the very American sport of cheerleading to a group of young women in the U.K. just made me so excited! I love that this show is filled with real heart, deep joy and the power of teamwork,” Witherspoon said in a statement.

A second biographical TV series about Mike Tyson is in the works – this one starring Jamie Foxx as the boxing legend and exec produced by Antoine Fuqua and Martin Scorsese.
Foxx, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in 2004 biopic Ray, will star in and exec produce Tyson, a limited series directed and exec produced by Fuqua and exec produced by Raging Bull director Scorsese and Tyson himself. Fledgling screenwriter Colin Preston wrote the pilot and is in the process of writing the full series.
The project was previously set up as a feature film back in 2014 with Foxx attached to play Tyson and Terence Winter writing the script. It has now become a limited TV series and is set to be taken out to market shortly.

Exclusive: Searchlight has acquired the rights to the package Hound with Set It Up‘s Zoey Deutch attached to star. Lisa Duva penned the script and Deutch will also produce.
The story follows a timid dog-groomer, Callie (Deutch), who after being bitten by a mysterious stray dog, she’s forced to wrestle with dark, new desires as her body goes through unexpected changes. Insiders say the package came together quickly after Deutch came across the script on the Purple List, NYU’s Black-List inspired list. She quickly fell in love with it and approached Duva about being a part of the project. The two were immediately into the idea of working together and the package was instantly put together. Once the package was on the market, Searchlight was quick to purchase.
