In news we absolutely did not see coming, Deadline reports today that Nicolas Cage (Arcadian) and FKA Twigs (The Crow) will be leading the cast of The Carpenter’s Son, which is said to be “exploring the rarely told story of the childhood of Jesus with a horror take.”
Noah Jupe and Souheila Yacoub will also be starring in the upcoming film.
Deadline notes in their report this afternoon that the film from director Lofty Nathan (Harka) has “taken inspiration from the apocryphal Infancy Gospel of Thomas for the screenplay. Dating back to the 2nd Century Ad, the text recounts the childhood of Jesus.”
Here’s the official synopsis:
“The Carpenter’s Son tells the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as ‘the Boy’, is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter, revealing inherent powers...

The Nicolas Cage resurgence as of late has interestingly mostly found him in more abstract kinds of films as opposed to his more commercially appealing blockbusters of yesteryear. While many have pined for a National Treasure 3, Cage has been partaking in indie films like Pig, Mandy and Dream Scenario. However, he would also mix in a couple mass audience projects like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Renfield. Deadline has now reported that Cage is set to star in The Carpenter’s Son, a horror tale that’s based on the rarely-told childhood of Jesus Christ.
The official synopsis for The Carpenter’s Son reads,
“The Carpenter’s Son tells the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as ‘the Boy’, is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter, revealing inherent powers and a fate beyond his comprehension.

With their nearly 40-year history, one would think Hayao Miyazaki could no longer surprise composer Joe Hisaishi. However, the Japanese animation master did just that when he introduced “The Boy and the Heron” to his longtime musical collaborator.
It wasn’t because Miyazaki was coming out of retirement (once again). Rather, it was how the Studio Ghibli co-founder presented the film to Hisaishi.
“The most important part of the process of composing a film is meeting up with the director and trying to decide where the music should be going in which part of the scenes,” Hisaishi tells Variety, via an interpreter. “But he skipped all of those meetings. We had none whatsoever.”
Hisaishi had no access to the storyboards or artwork, and instead watched a nearly complete version of the film in July of 2022. Miyazaki simply told him: “I leave it all up to you.”
