El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, McFarland USA and American Crime Story actor Johnny Ortiz could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Ortiz appeared at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown LA yesterday to face a number of charges, the most serious being the attempted murder of one Brian Duke. The indictment says this was conducted “for the benefit of, at the direction of, and in association with a criminal street gang with the specific intent to promote, further and assist in criminal conduct by gang members.”
First arrested in late May along with co-defendant Armando Miguel Navarro, the pair are accused of “attempted willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder.” Navarro is accused of pulling the trigger and while it’s not immediately clear what role Ortiz played, it’s obviously central enough that prosecutors have pursued the most serious charges against him. If found guilty, he...

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie actor Johnny Ortiz is in a very bad place today, facing attempted murder charges that could put him behind bars for the rest of his life.
Arrested back in late May, the 24-year-old Ortiz and 18-year old co-defendant Armando Miguel Navarro appeared in court in downtown Los Angeles this morning on the felony charges. With the duo being held in custody by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, the short hearing at the Foltz Criminal Justice Center saw the court set a preliminary hearing for September 22.
Ortiz has plead not guilty to the charges.
If found guilty on the “attempted willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder” charges, Ortiz is looking at 25 years to life in state prison under the California Penal Code. According to the complaint filed by prosecutors on May 27, the actor also faces a decade more in additional sentences.

Possession Diaries
Stars: Katherine Munroe , Delilah Cotto, Noel Gugliemi, James Russo, Johnny Ortiz, Eileen Dietz, Monica Engesser | Written by Juan Frausto, Rich Wealthy | Directed by Juan Frausto
Name: The Possession Diaries
2019
Appearance: Set in a single room, a woman named Rebecca (played by a rather intense Katherine Munroe) keeps a video diary of her possession by a demon after playing with an ouija board. Cue lots of spooky shenanigans.
Possession Diaries. A full confession of a possession.
What? The whole film takes place in a single room?
Yes. Other than a couple of phone call scenes, pretty much all the action in Possession Diaries happens in one room with Rebecca staring at her webcam telling us and her followers all about her slow, very slow, possession.
What possessed them to do such a thing?
Well done. There are plenty of horror films set in a single location, such as Xavier Gens...

And so the calendar closes on yet another TV year. As critics start to assemble year-end best lists and look forward to what the next 12 months might have in store, there’s still a final flurry of new original programming to sift through before 2018 fades away.
Per usual, these are spread out across broadcast, cable, and subscription services, this time with an extra peppering of original films debuting on TV airtime. With plenty of other options to juggle as 2018 closes, allow this one final collection to cap off the bunch.
(We do this roundup of new shows pretty much every month — if you missed any of those previous picks, here are some notable TV premieres from February, March, April, May, June, July, August, October, November, and our giant fall preview.)

"In this very moment, you have to grow up." HBO has released the official trailer for a film titled Icebox, which first premiered at the Toronto Film Festival this year. Adapted from filmmaker Daniel Sawka's award-winning short film of the same name from 2016, Icebox is about a young boy seeking asylum who becomes trapped inside America's rigid immigration process. Young actor Anthony Gonzalez stars as Oscar, with a full cast including Genesis Rodriguez, Omar Leyva, Johnny Ortiz, Matthew Moreno, and Jessica Juarez. This very timely, very upsetting film shows just how horrible they treat these people, kids included, who are just trying to life a better life in America. Even though it may be infuriating, this is worth a watch. Here's the first official trailer for Daniel Sawka's Icebox, direct from HBO's YouTube: A young boy named Oscar (Anthony Gonzalez), forced to flee his home and seek asylum...

HBO Films announced on Thursday that it has acquired the worldwide rights to director-writer Daniel Sawka’s feature film debut “Icebox.”
The film stars Anthony Gonzalez (“Coco”) as Oscar, a 12-year-old Honduran boy who is forced to flee his home and seek asylum in the U.S., only to find himself trapped in the U.S. immigration system.
As Oscar attempts to reach his uncle in Arizona, he is apprehended by Border Patrol and placed in “the icebox,” a detention facility where he joins scores of other migrant children being held without their families. Faced with a seemingly impenetrable immigration system, Oscar struggles to navigate a path to freedom, with a journalist and his uncle, himself a recent immigrant, as his only lifelines.

HBO Films has acquired the worldwide rights to director-writer Daniel Sawka’s timely drama feature Icebox, which premiered at this year’s Toronto Film Festival.
Produced by Oscar- and Emmy-winning James L. Brooks’ Gracie Films and co-financed with Endeavor Content, Icebox will debut Friday, December 7 on HBO.
Filmed on location in New Mexico, the film was shot primarily in Spanish with English subtitles. It tells the story of Óscar, played by Anthony Gonzalez (Coco), a 12-year-old Honduran boy who is forced to flee his home and seek asylum in the United States, only to find himself trapped in the U.S. immigration system.

Exclusive: Talk about having the pulse of an issue. Daniel Sawka first wrote and directed Icebox as a short film for his American Film Institute thesis project in 2016. The pic ended up being shortlisted for a 2018 Oscar, won a jury prize at AFI Fest and screened at Telluride. At some point James L. Brooks saw it, leading to he and his Gracie Films teaming with Sawka to develop it into a feature film.
That result is Icebox, which is having its world premiere Sunday in the Discovery section of the Toronto Film Festival. It lands smack in the middle of national outrage over the U.S. government’s controversial polices of separating families trying to cross the border (and the government’s seeming ineptness in reuniting children and their parents after the fact).

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon‘s Hulu pilot “Citizen” has added “American Crime” alum Johnny Ortiz to cast, TheWrap has learned exclusively. The show is described as a fresh take on the hero origin story blending elements of magical realism and gritty vigilantism against the backdrop of the vibrant world of east Los Angeles. Ortiz is taking on the role of Rusty, an ill-tempered gangbanger and a member of the baby Narcos; his role will recur in multiple episodes should the pilot be picked up to series. Though the ratings weren't very good in the first season, ABC renewed American Crime for a second season. Though it will feature new characters and a new story, several of the actors have returned. Will the show's small audience return? Will the ratings grow? Will American Crime be cancelled or renewed for a third season? Stay tuned.

The cast won't be back but the show title will be. ABC has decided to renew their low-rated anthology series, American Crime, for a second season. The show currently airs on Thursday nights.
On the first season of American Crime, a home invasion in Modesto, California results in the murder of war veteran Matt Skokie and a horrific assault on his wife Gwen. Four suspects are brought into custody for the crimes. Though the suspects and the victims fit a profile, they and their situations are far more complicated than anyone would have initially believed. The cast includes Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, W. Earl Brown, Richard Cabral, Caitlin Gerard, Benito Martinez, Penelope Ann Miller, Elvis Nolasco, Johnny Ortiz, and Regina King.

The fact that John Ridley, of 12 Years a Slave, created and executive produces American Crime is probably, oddly, too informative for the show’s own good.
If you know the film, you are correct about your estimation of what you’re going to get from the show, generally speaking, except insofar as the scope of the subjects up for analysis. This could be a turn off for some viewers, just based on the “everything can’t happen to this one set of people,” theory of non-watchability.
If you don’t know the film, you probably aren’t any more moved to see the show than you were the movie, and you should really try your best to overcome that, because the show is gripping, powerful, and engaging, almost in spite of itself.
The show kicks off with Russ (Timothy Hutton) having to identify the body of his son, Matt Skokie.

Johnny Ortiz is everywhere these days. You can currently see Ortiz alongside Kevin Costner in McFarland, USA an inspiring film about the unlikely success of a high school cross country team composed of the poor children of Hispanic migrant workers. Ortiz told me that working with Costner was a fabulous experience and that the month of grueling physical training in addition four months of filming in the hot sun, —while wearing a wig — “was pretty intense.” Starting March 5, you’ll be able to see Ortiz in American Crime, ABC’s gripping new Ortiz joins an amazing ensemble cast that includes … Continue reading →

Even before he won an Academy Award for "12 Years a Slave," John Ridley had an interesting, eclectic career. He's written for sitcoms ("The John Larroquette Show") and dramas ("Third Watch") and even produced Wanda Sykes' talk show. A decade before "Empire," he created a hip-hop industry drama for Upn called "Platinum." As a novelist, he's written science-fiction ("Those Who Walk in Darkness"), pulp ("Everybody Smokes in Hell") and historical fiction ("A Conversation with the Mann"), among other genres. Whether by design, opportunity, or simply a sense of restlessness — one of the most vivid characters in any of his books is Brain Nigger Charlie from "The Drift," a hobo who can no longer relate to the anchored middle-class existence from which he descended — Ridley has avoided being pigeonholed in a business that tries to do that with everyone, and particularly with artists of color. That sense of ambition and motion...

Chicago – Sports stories are made for the underdog, and it is the conduit for many immigrants and minorities to break through to the American Dream. “McFarland, USA” takes that idea and runs with it, as a high school cross country team of Mexican immigrants head towards the finish line.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Kevin Costner portrays the “coach,” with the same good vibes and unflappable air he has given all of his sports movie roles. This is based-on-a-true-story, so there actually is a cross country team in McFarland (north of Bakersfield, California), who kept winning because of the coach and the tradition established there. This is the origin story of that team in 1987, as the Mexican immigrant sons of “pickers” (field workers) become the core of the runners. The themes of poverty and wanting to belong to America run like a thread through the story, which per usual for sports stories involved second...

Inspired by the 1987 true story, McFarland, USA follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school.
Coach White and the McFarland students have a lot to learn about each other but when White starts to realize the boys’ exceptional running ability, things begin to change. Soon something beyond their physical gifts becomes apparent—the power of family relationships, their unwavering commitment to one another and their incredible work ethic.
With grit and determination, the unlikely band of runners eventually overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well. Along the way, Coach White realizes that his family finally found a place to call home and both he and his...

Here’s your first look at director Niki Caro’s film McFarland, USA. The trailer stars Kevin Costner and Maria Bello.

ABC has begun its run-up to next week’s upfront presentations by giving the greenlight to a seventh season of Castle, a fourth season to Once Upon a Time and an 11th year to Grey’s Anatomy. Scandal will be back, as will Modern Family and The Middle.
It also gave a fourth year to Revenge and a second year to Resurrection. The Goldbergs earned a second season, too. Somebody dodged a bullet, eh?
As of right now six new dramas have been picked up for fall, including the latest one from Shonda Rhimes. Here are the official log lines:...

Things are heating up already on the third installment, Eclipse. They haven't even started the second one yet, New Moon. When you've got a robust franchise, filmmakers are eager to get on board. Word is,...
