Chicago – Undoubtedly, one of the most poignant days of a gay person’s life is when they “come out” to family and friends. “4th Man Out” explores these moments, within the non-judgmental standards of the millennial generation. It’s only life, after all.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
The beauty of the story lies in a couple of plot elements – the “4th Man” is part of a group of lifelong male friends who grew up together and are all “brothers from other mothers,’ plus it’s set in small town America. This allows for a little transitional awkwardness, but also provides some high level humor and authentic love to shine. This is a lower budget independent film, and has some of the surface indications of that status, but the filmmakers do more with less just by creating some deep and abiding characters.
Chris (Parker Young), Nick (Chord Overstreet), Ortu (Jon Gabrus) and Adam (Evan Todd...

Despite arriving a decade too late, there’s a version of the small-town coming-out comedy “4th Man Out” — about a young, gay Average Joe whose friendship with his blue-collar buddies is tested by his newly announced sexuality — that could feel relevant. But first-time director Andrew Nackman’s emotionally shallow, vaguely misogynistic take isn’t it. Foul-mouthed yet ultra-tame, this bromance might have made a progressive-for-its-time companion piece with “Friends,” that gay panic-fueled ’90s TV staple. Many of the jokes — and later, a plot point — hinge on auto mechanic Adam’s (Evan Todd, “Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever”) possible attraction to.

Chicago – The times, they are a-changing, and much of that change comes from a millennial generation who accept all the people and experiences of their time. The new film “4th Man Out” explores what happens when one member of a close-knit male group of longtime friends reveals his orientation, and features Kate Flannery (“The Office”) and a stellar cast.
“4th Man Out” is a comedy, taking on the the confusion and adjustments both for a 25 year-old man from a small town named Adam (Evan Todd) who decides to come out to his lifelong buddies Chris, Nick and Ortu (Parker Young, Chord Overstreet and Jon Gabrus). At the same time he wrestles with how to navigate his new world, and how to come out to his family (including Kate Flannery as his mother Karen). Warm, funny and perfectly natural, “4th Man Out” succeeds by allowing everyone to be themselves.

We continue our hunt for an overlooked Christmas classic in the DVD bargain bin. Our latest treat? Grumpy Cat...
Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever is a hard film to write about.
Without wishing to exaggerate its effect, it almost makes you feel like you need to unlearn everything you thought you knew about cinema in order to give it a reasonable assessment. I suppose I should start by saying it’s not a 'good film', but then value judgements feel futile in the (adorable and super-smooshy) face of Grumpy Cat. Besides, whatever insult you could level at this film’s content is redundant. Odds are it’s already been covered by the mega-meta self-loathing that oozes from every scene.
What makes it so compelling, though, is the simple fact that it exists. That you can buy it on DVD. That you didn’t just pass out...
