Good to see something horrific coming out of Japan, for a change, that’s not got Monsters and Ninja in it! Peppered with dark humor, director Yôhei Fukuda’s (‘Chanbara Beauty’) twisty horror/mystery mash-up of a film X-Game is set for a UK bow next month and nothing else it shows us how revenge is a dished out Japanese style...cold. Good to see something horrific coming out of Japan that’s not X-Game goes on sale November 12. Synopsis: After a childhood friend's suicide, Hideaki and his former classmates reunite to pay their respects. Soon after, a DVD, marked X arrives revealing a man being tortured, triggering a flashback in Hideaki, reminding him of witnessing a schoolmate being subjected to humiliating batsu games. One evening, Hideaki is kidnapped and when he awakens the next day, he discovers he is in a recreation of his old school-room, along with his fellow classmates.

“Death Tube” is the latest outing from Yôhei Fukuda, a Japanese B-movie director previously responsible for average genre fare such as “Chanbara Beauty” and “Tokyo Gore School”. Released domestically as “X Game”, the film is based upon the popular novel by ‘Real Oni Gokko’ author Yamada Yusuke, and was inspired by the amusingly sadistic punishment games (or ‘batsu games’) which are a staple of Japanese variety shows. Though a fairly low budget production, the film has a hip young cast, headlined by Araki Hirofumi and Kato Sho from idol pop group D-Boys, and Kikuchi Ayaka and Nakagawa Haruka from AKB48. The plot is pretty high concept, revolving around a website called ‘Death Tube’, which features unfortunate people being put through a series of tasks before invariably being executed for their failure. Against their will, random viewers are selected to enter the killing game.
