Filmmaker and former 25 New Face Phillip Van took his camera out during the New York blackout and came away with a beautiful series of long-exposure shots capturing the city’s architecture and workers without their customary nocturnal illumination. Here’s what he had to say via email:
I shot the photos on a regular old Canon 5D. One night I had a tripod. Another I went handheld so I could travel more. The city was pitch black and ominous. Buildings felt like mausoleums. But if you stayed out long enough, your eyes adjusted to candles and shadows behind curtains and you got a sense of all the people in the dark patiently waiting it out.

London, Feb 16 – Madonna’s Raising Malawi charity director has lashed out at reports that the singer is facing problems from the locals over the construction of her school in the country, and insists the project has the “support of the village”.
Phillip Van den Bosche came to the star’s defence after reports suggested that residents of the government-owned land, Madonna has leased to house a 9-million-pound academy for 200 local girls, are angry over the amount of compensation they have.

The villagers were warned they faced prosecution if they do not make way for the facility outside the capital Lilongwe after construction began in October 2009. Thirty-two students from 20 colleges and universities have been selected as finalists in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' 35th annual Student Academy Awards competition. Winning filmmakers will participate in a week of industry-related activities, culminating in the awards ceremony on June 7.
