The powerful finale of Amazon Studios’ limited series The Underground Railroad created by Oscar winner Barry Jenkins is the latest installment of Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, a series that highlights the scripts serving as the creative backbone of the TV awards season. The scripts have all been submitted for Emmy consideration this year and have been selected using criteria that includes critical acclaim, a range of networks and platforms, and a mix of established and lesser-known shows.
Based on Colson Whitehead’s 2016 Pulitzer- and National Book Award-winning historical novel, the 10-episode series mixes fantastical realism and hard truths as it follows a young slave named Cora Randall (played by Thuso Mbedu) in antebellum Georgia as she attempts to find her freedom via an actual underground railroad system to the north. She is chased at every step by the slave catcher Ridgeway (Joel Edgerton).

A little girl not named Grace sits quietly at the center of Barry Jenkins’ “The Underground Railroad.” Introduced in the third episode holding a finger to her lips, “Grace” — played by Mychal-Bella Bowman and whose real name constitutes a minor yet precious spoiler — has been hiding in a cramped attic for many, many months, waiting for the real, operational, underground railroad to whisk her out of North Carolina and into safer, less confined spaces. Grace isn’t the show’s lead, or even one of the leads, though she does cross paths with Cora (Thuso Mbedu), the chief protagonist and most seasoned traveler, when the grown runaway crawls into Grace’s stooped refuge, seeking similar concealment from the malevolent forces out for them both.

Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk helmer Barry Jenkins will bring audiences back to the antebellum South for Amazon’s The Underground Railroad. Amid accounts of police brutality against members of the Black community and Hollywood’s attempts to correct hurtful and racist imagery, the showrunner spoke about the care he, his cast and crew took to address America’s dark history on-screen.
“It was as important as getting the scene right or the logistics, it was probably even more important because it’s not worth creating these things if it’s going to destroy us in the process,” he said during a press event on Thursday.

Amazon Prime Video has unveiled a majestic and powerful full trailer for Barry Jenkins’ upcoming, 10-episode limited series “The Underground Railroad,” the Southern antebellum saga he’s adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead. All episodes unveil on the streaming platform May 14, right in time to make the series eligible for the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards.
“The Underground Railroad” takes a bold approach to telling a story of slavery, as Whitehead’s novel was set in an alternate history where the 19th-century Underground Railroad was a literal railroad that American slaves used to flee the South and find freedom. The series chronicles Cora Randall’s (Thuso Mbedu) desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South.
After she escapes a Georgia Plantation, she finds the fabled Railroad is a real one full of engineers and conductors, whose secret network of tracks and tunnels runs beneath the soil of the South.

In the trailer for Barry Jenkins’ Amazon Prime Video limited series, “The Underground Railroad,” a young slave named Cora Randall (Thuso Mbedu) escapes from a Georgia plantation using the famous Underground Railroad. Only in Jenkins’ show, this historical route to freedom is not named metaphorically, but quite literally to freedom is quite literally an actual railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil.

The Leftovers, Season 2, Episode 5: “No Room at the Inn”
Written by Damon Lindelof and Jacqueline Hoyt
Directed by Nicole Kassell
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on HBO
Perhaps I jumped the gun on spending a recap talking about how The Leftovers is enamored with the concept of tests, and with emulating the quizzical nature of religious texts, because “No Room at the Inn” takes that idea several steps further. It’s the second time (after first-season breakthrough “Two Boats and a Helicopter”) that the series has honed in on Christopher Eccleston’s perennially put-upon Episcopalian preacher Matt Jamison for an entire hour, and it’s also the first time that it feels a bit like the series repeating itself. “No Room” is structurally and tonally similar to its predecessor, and despite some strong moments and some truly gut-churning moments of emotional torment, it just can’t match “Two Boats” for impact.

Will the good reverend ever learn? That was the question on everyone's mind during this week's spotlight episode of "The Leftovers," as writers Damon Lindelof and Jacqueline Hoyt chose to give Matt Jamison (played by the incomparable Christopher Eccleston) an hour unto himself. It's not the first time they've done so, and it felt like little had changed since our last extended visit with Nora's brother. Yet, thanks to impeccably crafted character development leading to dramatic and meaningful conflict, "No Room at the Inn" proved to be one of the series' best episodes to date, surpassing the Reverend's last hour and coming close to Nora's solo excursion from Season 1. Matt quickly got himself into trouble after leaving Miracle for Mary's doctor appointment; scheduled because he secretly wanted to know if she had signs of brain development since "waking up" on her first night in Jarden, TX. Yet his hidden motives were misinterpreted when the doctors.

Three years after a global event in which 140 million people (2% of the world’s population) inexplicably disappeared, those left behind are still trying to push the catastrophic event out of sight and mind. And it seems no matter how hard they try, the sudden departure, is something they just can’t escape. The Leftovers examines the complexity of human emotions and how this event has affected everyone in different ways. It’s a masterclass in establishing mood and creating mystery and told in a series of interwoven tales of people searching for answers while others try to simply forget. For anyone burnt out on Homeland‘s increasingly 24-esque take on international intrigue and perilous spycraft, Hugo Blick’s BBC/SundanceTV miniseries The Honourable Woman offers a respite, leaning harder on psychological and sociopolitical realism than overwrought action beats while tackling unrest in the Middle East and the repercussions of violence. Its first installment, “The Empty Chair,” is a case study in how to introduce both a complex story and complex characters without feeling like it’s needlessly dwarfing viewers in subplots just for the sake of it. There’s finally a flow happening with this show. In previous reviews, I have discussed the many problems of The Leftovers I won’t delineate now. Slowly, however, they have course-corrected. Episode by episode they have been addressing their problems and deciding on what to focus on; closing the doors to the dead-ends, opening up the ones more promising. We have been seeing different sides of characters that were too opaque, and seeing tighter, more controlled scripts. In other words, it’s getting good. And even though this episode isn’t as amazing as last week’s, it’s the first non-character-centric one that doesn’t feel mostly stalled or scrambled.

We’re still trying to get caught up on all the horror shows right now, so this week we’re adding The Strain to the setlist, which Kevin will be covering along with Teen Wolf and Under the Dome. Shawn’s got True Blood and Extant. I’ve got the rest. Salem ends this week!
The Last Ship: “We’ll Get There” - Sunday, July 13 at 9 Pm
I’m a little disappointed in the lack of offensive right-wing material in “We’ll Get There.” After last week’s awful Russian dictator, I thought we might branch out to some sort of Chinese communist attack. Alas, we get feelings about sons and daughters, about family left behind; there’s a water shortage after the ship’s engine fails. In general, it’s a pretty serious episode without much to laugh about.

The Leftovers, Season 1, Episode 3, “Two Planes and a Helicopter”
Written by Damon Lindelof & Jacqueline Hoyt
Directed by Keith Gordon
Airs Sundays at 10pm Est on HBO
What is The Leftovers? A mystery wrapped in an enigma, sure, but what else is on the show’s mind, and most importantly, what does it have to offer as a new series? Now that we have three episodes, we should begin to suss out the themes and make a guess of whether we as an audience want to stick with it, if it’s a show that speaks to us, or is making a worthy statement. What’s odd, though, is that there are too many different shows to work through here to figure out if that’s coming. Further, usually if this happens in a show, it happens with different story lines and characters, but in Mapleton that’s not even the case.
