Over the past 40-plus years, no figure in American documentary has been more important than Sheila Nevins. She has produced or executive produced hundreds of documentaries for HBO and more recently for MTV Documentary Films. And she’s won 32 Emmys, more than any single person.
But there’s one credit that hasn’t been attached to her name, until now: director. At the age of 84, Nevins has added that title to her long list of accomplishments with The ABCs of Book Banning, an Oscar-contending short documentary about increasingly aggressive efforts by conservatives to keep certain published works out of the hands of schoolchildren.
Nevins joins the latest episode of Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss her directorial debut, which she explains was inspired by seeing a viral video of a 100-year-old woman taking on the Martin County School Board in Florida. Grace Linn, who has since turned 101, denounced board...

Tonally disjointed but at times hilarious, Adamma Ebo’s feature adaptation of her popular short seems to have taken a misguided shape. This religious satire that episodically skewers the theatrics of flamboyant televangelists promoting prosperity theology may seem more fitting for a web series or a much shorter film. Despite the brilliance of its leads, Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul. runs out of steam as it rapidly switches modes between faux-documentary and drama.
Inspired by countless megachurch scandals, including preachers like Ted Haggard who seem obsessed with homosexuality (usually a clue they’re having their own reckoning), pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown) and first lady Trinitie (Regina Hall) find themselves at a crossroads. Well-funded megachurch preachers who believe their followers would prefer to hear the gospel from a sharp-dressed preacher with a closet full of Prada, they’ve fired the deacons who questioned the couple’s excessive lifestyle.

Dan Harris is replacing Bill Weir as the co-anchor of “Nightline” because Weir is leaving ABC “for another opportunity in the news business,” ABC News chief Ben Sherwood said Friday. Weir (pictured above right), who helped begin “Gma Weekend” in 2004, was named co-anchor of “Nightline” in 2010. Harris has covered religion for “Nightline,” focusing especially on evangelicals. He earned one of the first interviews with Ted Haggard after his sex and drugs scandal. He has also covered school shootings, the war in Afghanistan, the Haiti earthquake and Hurricane Katrina. Russell Tovey has joined the cast of the HBO drama Looking, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Tovey will have a recurring role in HBO’s upcoming drama about gay men living in San Francisco, as a man who works with Jonathan Groff‘s character.
Waking up naked in Golden Gate Park would be welcome, hunting like a predator, not so much.
TVLine reports that Fox is developing a drama based on Jonathan Kellerman‘s novels about a “crime-solving psychologist, who joins forces with a closeted gay Lapd detective”. Anyone familiar with Kellerman’s work? Should we be excited about this?
Is FX’s The Bridge a show that has succeeded by being the anti-Killing? By focusing beyond the murder mystery and bringing the characters and setting to life, Time argues that the FX drama has learned some important lessons from AMC’s critical-darling-turned-critical-pariah.

From the ascension of George Bush (in Journeys with George) to the crash-and-burn of Ted Haggard (The Trials of Ted Haggard), director Alexandra Pelosi has been fascinated with the rise and fall of the men who comprise our political and social landscape. In her latest documentary, Fall to Grace, she finds elements of both narrative arcs in the story of New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, who simultaneously resigned his position and announced his homosexuality in 2004, midway into his term. (McGreevey revealed an affair with a man he appointed as New Jersey homeland security advisor.) Following his resignation, McGreevey divorced …...

David Hasselhoff made a highly anticipated stop by “Chelsea Lately” Wednesday night to make up with Chelsea Handler, who's taken her fair share of jabs at The Hoff through the years.
After the former "Baywatch" star presented Handler with flowers and a swag bag of “Hoff-themed” items, the conversation turned to his “Piranha 3Dd” co-star, Gary Busey.
When Handler asked how it was working with the eccentric actor, who was last seen being yelled at by Meatloaf on "The Celebrity Apprentice" and swapping wives with Ted Haggard, Hasselhoff kept it real. "You know, we just made a pact in my contract that I would not be in the same room as Gary Busey. He’s really an entertaining person, but he’s a little scary.”

Ted Haggard presents "Jesus Christ Superstud"
On this week's Gcb, reformed mean girl Amanda tries to help Hot Pastor Tudor get some of his lost flock back, by putting on a Broadway-caliber show. If I said it ended with Kristin Chenoweth crashing through a stained-glass window, would you be surprised?
Hot Pastor Tudor is upset that some of his congregation have migrated to the church run by his arch-nemesis Reverend Steve (played by the adorable Michael Arden), and when Steve rubs Hpt's nose in the fact that he's going all out for this year's church musical, Amanda takes it upon herself to well, lie, and state that Hpt's church musical will be the greatest spectacle Texas has seen since Dubya did some bad blow and tried to "water the cactus" at The Alamo.*
* May not have happened.
This show has officially hit its limit of cute guys.

Does the entire Two and a Half Men budget go to Ashton Kutcher? Gary Busey played himself earlier this season on the hit CBS show, but it doesn't seem like that paycheck was enough to sustain his spending habits. The 67-year-old actor—who even swapped significant others with Ted Haggard for an episode of Wife Swap that aired earlier this year—has fallen on some tough times financially. E! News confirmed that Busey has filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in California. So just how did the Celebrity Rehab alum fall so far into debt? According to court documents, Busey indicates he might owe money to the IRS, UCLA Medical Center, Waste Management, Pacific Hearing and various...

Bad news for former "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant Gary Busey -- the actor filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in California on Feb. 7.
According to TMZ, which got its hands on the official court documents, Busey has less than $50,000 but more than half a million dollars in debt (though less than $1 million). He reportedly owes money to lawyers, UCLA Medical Center, Wells Fargo and the IRS, among others.
He's also got a pending lawsuit from a woman who sued him for attacking her at an Oklahoma airport in May of 2011.
Busey's rep tells TMZ, "Gary's filing is the final chapter in a process that began a few years ago of jettisoning the litter of past unfortunate choices, associations, circumstances and events."
Busey, who has starred in more than 70 films, was last seen on ABC's "Celebrity Wife Swap," where he switched lives with disgraced pastor Ted Haggard.

I briefly touched on last night's episode of Celebrity Wife Swap in my review of the premiere. It served as a "preview episode" and aired the day before Gary Busey and Ted Haggard inaugurated ABC's latest foray into reality programming. As I watched it last night for the second time, the giant question mark floating over my head was, "Why this episode?" Why was this the preview and first impression of this show? Why did this episode... More >>...

The New Year's resolution might be society's most useless invention since the appearance of those tiny chairs for your cell phone to sit on. They're made to be broken. They've become a joke. In 2011, Time Magazine compiled an illuminating list entitled "Top Commonly Broken New Year's Resolutions." Unsurprisingly, this list would be exactly the same if it was called "Top New Year's Resolutions." People all over the world are already hitting snooze on their commitments.
So consider swapping your resolution this year to something that you know that you can stick to, something that you are hard-wired as a person living in the 21st century to be great at doing. This spring, watch a whole lot of TV. Here's a guide to replacing Time's most commonly broken resolutions with a TV show that will happily fill the time you were going to spend waiting in line for the treadmill or half-heartedly learning Spanish.

There were plenty of notable moments on last week's episode of "Celebrity Wife Swap," which starred actor and reality mainstay Gary Busey, disgraced Evangelical mega-church pastor Ted Haggard, and their respective spouses.
But perhaps it was the moment when Busey, along with Busey's buckskin-and-headress-sporting spiritual advisor, "Indian Bob," and Haggard's wife, Gayle, were sitting in a circle on Mr. Busey's lawn participating in a Native American "soul-cleansing ceremony" when the truth became utterly and tangibly clear.
Reality shows are finally proud of their own circus, and they're unafraid to let us know.
Indeed, the time has come to stop pretending these shows actually care about the subjects involved in any sort of human way. In fact, at certain points, one almost forgets that we're dealing with actual human beings existing in the real world. Want to counter the Haggard children's heartfelt efforts to rebuild their family after a debilitating scandal...

It’s going to be hard to top the onslaught of lunacy that Celebrity Wife Swap contestants Ted Haggard and Gary Busey and their respective significant others brought to the table during last night’s absolutely bonkers episode. No one brings the crazy quite like Busey. It was certainly a memorable "Celebrity Wife Swap" (Tue., 9 p.m. Est on ABC) when Gary Busey's fiancee Steffanie Sampson switched places with Ted Haggard's wife, Gayle. Haggard became infamous when a gay sex scandal erupted in 2006. A gay masseur alleged that Haggard had paid him for sex for three years.
While Haggard stepped down from his position at New Life Church, he and his wife did stay together, and even returned to Colorado Springs. Sampson noticed, though, that the whole ordeal still hangs like a heavy cloud over the family. She was particularly concerned about a passage she read in Gayle's book about the incident that suggested the masseur was doing the Devil's work.
She confronted Haggard for his opinions on gay marriage, and he said that while he supported civil unions, he couldn't support them being married in the traditional sense. He also emphasized the word...

In case ABC's "Wife Swap" wasn't crazy enough, they've stepped it up a notch, bringing in noted lunatic (and Oscar-nominee) Gary Busey and disgraced pastor Ted Haggard for "Celebrity Wife Swap."
Busey's girlfriend, Steffanie Sampson, who wears a wedding band because she believes she and Gary are married spiritually, swaps places with Gayle Haggard, who is determined to share her side of Ted's gay prostitute scandal.
The question of faith is obviously a focal point of the episode. Gary and Steffanie, who do consider themselves Christians, also believe in past lives (they were together in several). Gayle questions whether their belief in reincarnation can jive with their belief in Jesus. Meanwhile, Steffanie takes offense when she reads that Gayle considered the male prostitute that Haggard was caught in an affair with to be Satan.
Ultimately, the families were surprisingly amicable. Gary was uncomfortably interested in Gayle's high school extracurriculars and...

Ted Haggard, the disgraced former president of the National Association of Evangelicals who was ousted after admitting to buying drugs and allegedly had a relationship with a male escort, is back in the headlines.
This time, however, the pastor is trading spouses with Hollywood actor Gary Busey on "Celebrity Wife Swap."
Just how much Haggard will address the scandal during the show remains to be seen, but the evangelical leader said he sought out the TV appearance as "an opportunity...to bring people up to date on how [my family and I] were doing." As he told CNN: "I went through a scandal five years ago, and most marital problems aren’t nearly as serious as that one was and we survived it. So many people are fixated on the scandal as though it is the only thing in [our lives], and actually, that was not the only thing."

Carnie Wilson, Tracey Gold star in 'Celebrity Wife Swap' premiere: Will you 'Hold On' to the series?
It’s amazing the television you’ll put up with when you’re sick. Sidelined by salmonella over the past four days (turns out my eighth-grade home-economics teacher was right: Never eat the batter, no matter how good it looks), I’ve spent my nauseated time watching approximately 11 episodes of Law & Order: Svu, the premiere of the so-depressing-it’s-good The Bachelor, and the premiere of the so-depressing-it’s-depressing Celebrity Wife Swap. In a healthy state, I would have made myself a nice dessert, gone for a brisk walk outside, or even read another chapter of my book, but, thanks to my immobility,...

The winter TV drought is over! A whole crop of new shows are premiering this week and many more new and old favorites are back from hiatus. Whatever you choose to watch this week, just don't let it be "Work It" on Tuesday ... otherwise ABC might be tempted to make more.

"The Bachelor" (8 p.m. Est, ABC) season premiere
Winemaker Ben Flajnik is the lucky (if dull) bachelor seeking a second chance at love after falling short of winning Ashley Herbert's heart during last season's "The Bachelorette." Twenty-five women will enter the mansion, including one enthusiastic senior citizen named Sheryl, a sexy equestrian who arrives on horseback, and an athletic soccer player. But which 18 will make it through to next week?

Gary Busey and Ted Haggard, who are reportedly set to appear on an upcoming episode of "Celebrity Wife Swap," were apparently no-shows at a Thursday shoot for the series in Colorado Springs.
The eccentric actor and disgraced evangelical preacher were apparently scheduled to tape scenes at a Glbt pride center sending care packages to gay military personnel, but when word leaked to news outlets the plan was scrapped in favor of a shoot at an undisclosed location.
"Our guests didn't arrive," said Charlie Irwin, executive director of the Glbt Pride Center.
According to the The Colorado Springs Gazette, producers for Zodiac USA -- the company shooting the show for ABC -- threatened to sue Irwin if he divulged any details about the show.

Sometimes we have to take our little blogger porkpie hats off and bow from the waist in praise of the reality show gods, because we never would have thought to pair Gary Busy and Ted Haggard on Celebrity Wife Swap. A thousand monkeys typing for a thousand years never would have come up with that idea. Except apparently they did, and now ABC is putting it on the air.
While Busey has made a career out of reality show gigs like Celebrity Rehab and Celebrity Apprentice in the past few years, Ted Haggard is probably best known for losing his reputation as an evangelical pastor after he was found to have visited a male prostitute. Also know as reality TV gold. The real question is, why on earth would Gary’s partner Steffanie Sampson or Gayle Haggard agree to go along with it? And since they are, can we please...

Disgraced former Evangelical pastor Ted Haggard has managed to do the near impossible. He has sunk to an new low by agreeing to appear on an upcoming episode of Celebrity Wife Swap, in which he will ‘swap’ wives with crazy actor Gary Busey.
Ted Haggard was booted from the National Association of Evangelical pastors after admitting to screwing a male prostitute and taking crystal meth.

The second week, the new wives take control and set out to try and change the way their "new" families live. Each episode ends with the real couples reuniting and having a meeting of the minds with their counterparts.

Ben Harvey and Dave Rubin have a new theme song, which is impressive, given that most of us don't even have an old theme song. It's for their podcast The Six Pack, an entertaining mix of talk and interviews that is currently the top-downloaded Glbt podcast on iTunes.
More importantly, they also have an increasing number of sponsors.
In other words, Ben (a radio DJ) and Dave (a stand-up comic) are moving up in the world! Their radio show, which started out as a filmed podcast called The Ben and Dave Show for the gay cable channel here! TV in 2008, is rapidly becoming self-sustaining.

“Abstinence never felt so good.” Sounds like the tagline to The 40 Year Old Virgin, if The 40 Year Old Virgin were both awful and not really, really old. In actuality, it’s the tag line for a movie called The Waiting Game, which is a Christian comedy about an Alfred Molina lookalike who saves himself for marriage, only to be left victim to a runaway bride. Evangelical Christians should do whatever they want, including waiting to have sex until they take their sacred vows. But they shouldn’t necessarily be allowed to make “comedy movies,” because kissing pratfalls and playing the Wii are never funny. And a goofy cameo by shamed meth-and-gay-prostitute fan Pastor Ted Haggard? Sounds like the perfectly creepy, bizarre Colorado goofball sideshow that is this icky oddity. What's a disgraced reverend to do after being internationally outed for meth-fueled antics with a male escort? Self-parody in a low-budget Christian sex comedy, of course.
Talking Points Memo [via Jezebel] has the trailer for "The Waiting Game," a comedy about an aging abstinent man that features a cameo from former New Life Church honcho Ted Haggard.
The filmmakers, admittedly inspired by Judd Apatow's "40-Year-Old Virgin," haven't actually made the movie yet. This trailer is just a pitch to get the $2 million in financing needed to bring it to the big screen.
With the right amount of recasting, rewriting and changing it completely, we might even invest ourselves.
