Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this month we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) on board to play the title character… and now more details on the plot have been revealed!
When the project was announced, we heard a Kickstarter campaign would be raising funds to help Kostanski’s Action Pants FX...

With their comic Minor Threats, actor and comedian Patton Oswalt and TV writer Jordan Blum found unexpected success with their title focused on the travails of underappreciated and overlooked D-list villains.
Now, a background character in the comic that is about background villains is getting his moment in the spotlight.
From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly teams up the duo, who created Hulu’s stop-motion Marvel series M.O.D.O.K., with comics author Kyle Starks and artist Ryan Browne, the illustrator of indie hit Eight Billion Genies. It tells a coming-of-age story about an insect monster-man, seen previously as a silent but oh-so-cool-looking humanoid fly in a punk jacket in certain panels of the Threat comics. Now, he is searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Dark Horse Comics is publishing the four-issue mini-series starting in July.

The 1983 cult sword-and-sorcery movie Deathstalker produced by Roger Corman is getting resurrected, this time as a 21st century comic book.
Guns N’ Roses rocker Slash and Vault Comics have teamed up for the comic, which will also have involvement from Shout! Studios, the owner of the rights to the Corman library, and Raven Banner Entertainment.
Tim Seeley, best known for his work as the co-creator of horror comic Hack/Slash and DC’s Grayson, is writing the comic, with Jim Terry handling art. The duo previously teamed for West of Sundown, a Western vampire comic from Vault. Steven Kostanski, the creature effects artist and filmmaker who has directed segments for the V/H/S and ABCs of Death movies as well as horror flicks such as Psycho Goreman, wrote the story for what is being described as a reimagining.

Did y’all know Archie Comics has a horror line? The company has been steadily delivering on their love of horror with titles like the zombie-filled Afterlife with Archie, the vampire slayer driven Vampironica, and the gory werewolf tale Jughead: The Hunger.
Archie Horror manages to bring back the feeling of classic comics like Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror, and the line is back with a brand new throwback tale.
The company’s latest one-shot, Camp Pickens, takes place at the titular summer camp. Camp Pickens sees the beloved Archie characters spend the summer as counselors encountering the horrors that plague the cursed site. It’s an interesting premise/hook that immediately calls back to films such as Sleepaway Camp and Friday the 13th. Although the 80-page giants generally have been pretty good, especially the wave of books we had celebrating various character anniversaries, DC of late have struggled a little with the anthology books. I should say it’s not just DC, but as once upon a time they were the masters of the format it is most noticeable with them. The mix of creative teams isn’t the issue either. A blend of known names and up-and-comers was always the way DC’s mystery books operated, and it served them very well. What drew me to this book the most was Paul Levitz writing Phantom Stranger (that alone is worth the entrance price), and Tom Mandrake and Kelley Jones illustrating two tales. Let’s hope the other stories can add some scary fun as well.

For a fan of 80s horror and 80s metal, The Roadie hits such a sweet spot and feels like it fits right in with some of the classic horror. What led to this being your latest project for Dark Horse?

What better setting for a Biblical apocalypse than an XXX novelty shop with peep show booths picketed by religious zealots who, more often than not, protest as a means of projecting their own internalized “sins”? That’s where we meet Angie Pitarelli (Caito Aase) and Sally Mewbourne (Shaina Schrooten) at the start of director Luke Boyce and screenwriters Michael Moreci and Tim Seeley’s Revealer. The former is heading inside to take an extra shift. The latter is screaming at her to repent. These women have a fun (if acrimonious) rapport considering they’ve been at this dance for what we can assume is years as neither gains any ground. Angie isn’t going to quit her job and Sally isn’t going to quit God. Sadly, neither will save them from judgment.
Isn’t that the rub? Whether you lead a carefree lifestyle refusing to kowtow to those who...

Angie Pitarelli and Sally Mewbourne (Shaina Schrooten; Scare Package II: Rad Chad’s Revenge) know each other, but they aren’t exactly friends. Angie works a peep booth at The Revealers Bookstore. Sally spends a lot of time there too, only she’s protesting against this den of inequity.
It’s summer 1987 and Angie has picked up an extra shift to help with the bills. This means an extra day of dealing with not just Sally but her boss Ray and a parade of obnoxious patrons. But she’ll soon be wishing that was all she had to deal with as she and Sally are trapped in the store as what seems to be Armageddon unfolds outside.

With Christmas fast approaching I thought I would take in the role of the ever helpful happy elf and throw out some comic book gift ideas. It must be tough buying for us nerds, we can be a fussy bunch. I fortunately do not have any other nerds to buy for, I don’t envy the task at all. Does the comic book fan in your life read trade paperbacks, hardcovers or only omnibuses? I wouldn’t even being to contemplate getting into back issues unless I was well tuned in to a certain individuals wants and needs. Also what I wanted to do with this list was look at some alternatives to the usual books that are getting shouted out. There are debates all the time from comic book commentators saying the success of the movies is bringing more people to comics. I remain unconvinced by the the evidence...

I’ve written elsewhere that I seem to have reviewed a whole lot of these over-sized DC Special’s of late. Not a complaint, mind you, far from it. DC could have quite easily stuck out a load of old reprints and hastily cobbled together inventory stuff and put it out and a lot of people would probably have picked it up anyway. They went the other way though, and have curated a lot of nicely done tales, by a mixture of legendary creators and more recent fan favourites. The recent Flash 80 pager I reviewed was especially good. Scanning down the creator list on this Robin book, straight away names like Marv Wolfman, Devin Grayson, Tom Grummett, Dan Jurgens, and Chuck Dixon jump out. I like the fact DC try to get creators particularly associated with the different incarnations of Robin to recreate their magic.

Once upon a time The Crow franchise was all conquering. There were comics, TV shows, films, books, models, the lot. That’s not to say The Crow hasn’t been around much, as comic book wise it has been almost a constant presence since it popped up in 1989, created by James O’Barr. I think it has gone through six publishers in its time, so clearly there is usually someone, somewhere who enjoys a bit of a supernatural Gothic superhero. Well, me among others. However, I have been a neglectful friend, and haven’t picked up a Crow book for many a moon. So, when I saw a Christmas Special that was being written by Tim Seeley, I figured now’s the time to check back in. Clean slate, self contained story. perfect to review. Let’s take a look.

It was pretty much impossible for me not to pick up this book with a title like that, so well done whoever decided to name the book. Reeled me in straight away. The Masters of the Universe have actually had a pretty decent shelf line for a franchise that grew out of an 1980′s toy line, a toy line I’m pleased to say I was in on from the start. I had quite a few of the figures, which for their day were really good quality, and have fond memories of the cartoon too. The comics, funnily enough, were a part of He-Man and company from the very start, as mini comics were packaged with the figures from the start. ‘Proper’ comics have been published down the years by DC, Marvel and Image, of varying but generally pretty decent quality,...

DC's new Masters of the Universe series sounds like Crisis on Infinite Eternias!
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is one of those properties that has been around for so long that there are multiple takes on it and they're all over the place. Like Batman, Spider-Man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Ghostbusters, there are incarnations that are badass and incarnations that are wonderfully...not so badass. It used to be that things were roughly linked together with action figure-based comics, an animated series, a continuation of the animated series, and a spinoff animated series. Now we're at the point where the spinoff has been rebooted into a popular Netflix cartoon starring his cousin She-Ra, with another on the way from Kevin Smith.
It makes sense that after all this time, we'd finally get our own He-Man version of Turtles Forever and Into the Spider-Verse.

The recent reports that Robert Pattinson is all but locked in as the successor to Ben Affleck in The Batman sent shockwaves throughout social media. The sadly predictable reaction touched on Pattinson’s time in the Twilight franchise, as folks behaved with puzzled dismay that anyone who’d appeared in something so disgustingly feminine could ever be their rock-solid man’s man Caped Crusader.
Perhaps they’re forgetting that this whole scene played itself out just over a decade ago though when Heath Ledger was announced as the new Joker. Sure, he’s now considered the finest actor to play the role, but at the time fans were positively howling with derision.
But if this new campaign bears fruit, that howling might reach a new volume. That’s because Twilight fans, hopped up on the news that they’re going to get to see Pattinson in a sculpted rubber suit,...

We got to sit down and talk with Tim Seeley about Injustice: Gods Among Us, DC's Primal Age, and the concept of Skeletor in fishnets.
Tim Seeley seems to have a thing for writing about sci-fi barbarians interacting with modern worlds. At Marvel, he's in the middle of doing a series on Shatterstar. With DC, he's in the middle of a miniseries called Injustice vs. Masters of the Universe. Yes, even though He-Man and his ilk haven't shown up in the actual NetherRealm Studios games, that hasn't stopped Seeley and artist Freddie Williams II from slamming the two properties together like action figures.
At New York Comic Con, I got the opportunity to sit down with Seeley to discuss the crossover. It was a good time. You should have been there.
Well, bye.

A gladiator, a warrior, a hero…the man called Shatterstar has been many things, but one thing he’s always been is deadly. He’s not a man you want to cross or you’ll learn that fact all too well. Walk back into the darkness with Shatterstar!
Ok, confession time. Shatterstar has – since first discovering him in X-Force – been one of my all-time favourite superheroes for years. Even when he wasn’t appearing in any books! Now, truthfully, that’s more to do with how much of a badass he looks, rather than his actions (one of the reasons his recent Marvel Legends figure was a day one purchase for me!) – though he has one hell of a backstory, a backstory that is covered here in case readers are totally new to the character.
